Our old comrade Zennie, who plugs away daily with his blogging, and vlogging, and sports coverage, dropped in on the Bay to Breakers office. It's a long (15 minute) video, in which he carries a camera around while he's introduced to the staff putting together the race, including race director Angela Fang. She discusses how every finisher in the race this year (if they're registered) gets a commemorative medal. And how there'll be bands along the course playing music reflecting some of the decades of the 100 years the race has been run (we're sure the drunk people will enjoy that, and it may also distract them from finishing and collecting their medals). The best part, though, is where Zennie admits that a couple of years ago he fell off the back of the press truck, presumably while trying to shoot video of the race. And he hopes that won't happen again.

This comes as a great surprise, and disappointment to CityBrights blogger Zennie Abraham. " This blogger predicted he would run and this blogger was way wrong... It's too bad and really sad to see a man I've admired over my life go out this way."

Dellums broke the news in an emotional private meeting with supporters at the Oakland Marriott yesterday, amidst the brouhaha elsewhere in the Bay Area over the Prop 8 decision. Zennie in particular sees his quiet bowing out as "stick[ing] his head in the sand" and admitting failure.

Though Dellums was initially credited with lowering crime rates in Oakland and beefing up the police force, he's recently criticized for being a mostly absentee leader who allowed others to run City Hall day to day and rack up multi-million-dollar deficits while he renegged on a promise to take a pay cut, and failed to pay some $250,000 in back taxes for 2005-2007. He also was largely absent during recent negotiations to lay off a large piece of the police force he helped to beef up when his tenure began.

Zennie Explores Oil Eating Bacteria

Citizen journalist and onetime e-friend of SFist, Zennie Abraham (we hope he's forgiven us for that Oscars incident, b...

SF News

city brights

gulf of mexico

oil spill

video

zennie

zennie abraham

Jay Barmann

Citizen journalist and onetime e-friend of SFist, Zennie Abraham (we hope he's forgiven us for that Oscars incident, but we digress), was taking a break from World Cup mania and walking down the street recently when he had an epiphany about solving the Gulf oil disaster: What about oil-eating bacteria? He does a little investigating, finds a firm in Florida that makes the stuff, and wonders aloud why Florida governor Charlie Crist hasn't called on the company yet. Then, wouldn't you know, Crist pays a 40-minute visit to the firm. Coincidence? Zennie is upset about a perceived slight in re: his seeking press credentials for the Oscars. We corrected our previous post so as not to appear that we were misrepresenting the facts, but Zennie still sent us a number of emails, and continues to take issue with us calling him our "old pal."

To set the record straight, we want to be abundantly clear that our affection for Zennie's blog is not meant in a mocking tone -- we admire all those in the blog/vlog firmament who regularly put themselves out there for the world to listen to, read, and react to, be it good, bad and otherwise. And since Zennie feels discriminated against in this instance by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it is wrong of us to make light of his complaints against them, especially if his claims regarding how much traffic he generates for SF Gate turn out to be true (a million hits a month? You go, Zennie).

Our Old Pal Zennie Is Flabbergasted That He Can't Get a Press Credential for the Oscars

CORRECTION: Zennie contacted us to clarify that he was, as he explains in the video, invited by AMPAS to apply for a credential, only to be rejected later in what he feels was a discr...

misc

academy awards

blogging

city brights

oscars

video

zennie

Jay Barmann

City Brights blogger and SFist fave Zennie Abraham (who, inexplicably, is no longer a featured City Brights blogger and whose blog now must be dug up about six links deep) can't figure out why the Oscars aren't showing him a little respect as a member of the online press. In the past, he's gotten some sort of press credential to cover the Saturday before the Academy Awards in Los Angeles (or something), and this year he is shocked — SHOCKED — that he was not invited to apply for a credential, and thus far has not been able to score one. In the video above, and in this blog post, Zennie describes his daily reach, both for blogging and vlogging, and wonders aloud how the Academy could so thoughtlessly snub him. (We should note that while he cites getting 25,000 video views per day, this video in question, which has been up for three days, has only garnered 261 views on YouTube. But perhaps his metrics are coming from elsewhere.)
CORRECTION: Zennie contacted us to clarify that he was, as he explains in the video, invited by AMPAS to apply for a credential, only to be rejected later in what he feels was a discriminatory process. It appears there is some discrepancy between who they invite to apply and the 3,000 members of the press to whom they grant credentials.

Zennie Reacts to Sen. Zennie says that Reid's comments may have been racist, but the man is not, and he goes on to make the (somewhat spurious) argument that, "Much has changed since Barack Obama became the 44th President of The United States, specifically attitudes about race and the overall willingness to talk about race and racism." He also brings up the fact that many (older) African Americans didn't believe Obama could get elected, which was racist in itself.
His answer: partner with YouTube, which apparently in one step will generate some percentage revenue fee for the traffic sent to YouTube videos, and will help twitterers to "jazz up" their profiles and tweets, like they do with photos. Certainly we'd rather have an instructional video from @Martha Stewart when she twitters a recipe for currant/raspberry crisp, rather than just a lousy photo, but we're not sure this would translate to too many dollar bills.
Star Trek

Zennie Records Bouncer / Patron Fight at Harry's

Oh lucky day.

misc

zennie

Brock Keeling

Oh lucky day.

Zennie sounds like he could be one of the most interesting people this city has got going for it. In addition to ruminating on Star Trek or Giants games, he comes across great action around town. Take, for example, this Fourth of July bar brouhaha he captured. See, some drunk guy from the Summer's Eve set tried to get into a fight with a bouncer at Harry's over the holiday weekend. And it gets ugly. And entertaining.

Then, an annoying man in camo cutoffs interjects his dude-not-cool-bro opinion into the already tense situation; a guy who, presumably under the influence a bit, didn't see what went down but feels the need to vent his feelings the way most emasculated men in San Francisco do. The bouncer, as you can see, is just doing his job.

And then, some other passerby jumps into the fray because you can never have too many chefs in the kitchen.

Bonus points go out to the woman in red dancing with our inebriated friend.

The action gets going at 1:50.

You may recall Zennie from his complaints about the "outsized" proportions of the futuristic San Francisco shown in the trailer for J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek film. Well, the movie's out, and Zennie's got his tickets! (See link for a tangent about his high school bike club in the 70s.) In the video posted here, in re: the new Star Trek, Zennie asks the question, Where are all the black people?

Well, as it happens, the East Bay denizen's addiction to vlogging did not start and certainly did not end with that arguably minor work. Allow us to point you to his latest opus, in which he takes us to the San Francisco Giants' opening day at AT&T Park, but not without an initial tour of something called BART and something called the N-Judah.
