According to Santa Cruz Sentinel:

Santa Cruz police reported that six people wearing bandanas tried to break into a Westside home ["Westside rules!" -- SFist] just before 1 p.m., and that one of the family members, not the faculty member, was attacked before the intruders fled. The male victim had made sure his wife and children were safe in the back of the house before he confronted the attackers. He suffered minor injuries after being hit with an unknown object. None of the other four people in the house were injured.

The goes on to say that:

We tried contacting Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC7) for comment -- who, it should be noted, are very attractive for a group of pro-lifers -- but so far have yet to hear back from them.

The name of the faculty member has not been made public. Also, be safe out there, slug researchers. We know you're fighting the good fight.

Update: SHAC7 claims they didn't do it. We hope you're inspired to try new some new places, and we'd love to hear recommendations of Westside joints you'd like to see reviewed in this feature, so please send your thoughts our way, or leave them in the comments.

Even though we said we were trying to get out more, there are some nights (usually nights involving Wednesday night TV) we need to food to come to us.

We're disturbingly anal (and watch our site stats shoot through the roof with the use of that word within the context of SFist) enough to keep a file folder of all the menus left on our door, but there's only one we really use: Andy's Restaurant, which is subheadded as "Excellent Chinese Cuisine".

Over our many years living in the Sunset we've tried many of Andy's entrees, with varying levels of success. But we've come up with a hit list (and a miss list) we'd love to share with you, the next time you're anywhere in the Irving/Judah corridor and want some good, and occasionally great Chinese delivery/carry-out, especially when it comes to their seafood dishes. Check it out after the jump!

Out in the Sunset, you can't swing a cat without hitting a pretty decent Thai restaurant. We're reminded of the line in Six Degrees of Separation, where dining in New York is described as "genius on every corner". While we're not there quite yet, it's tempting to paraphrase and say "damn good Panang curry on every block." When it's safe to assume that most Thai places are going to serve pretty solid cuisine, what makes one choose one over the other? A lot of times it's the smaller details that make the difference, which is why we will cross the park to go to the Richmond district's Patpong, at 25th and Clement.

We've eaten there several times in the past, and went there again tonight in preparation for this review (oh, the things SFist endures for you readers). Every time we go there we're struck by the excellent service, the lovely decor, and the food that really raises the bar for Westside Thai cuisine.

Photo from Patpong's site, but it doesn't really do the place justice
A feature in which SFist brings attention to restaurants in the oft-overlooked Richmond and Sunset districts. SFist has decided to take Dr. Phil's advice and to go out on "dates" with our long-standing sweetheart. Living in the Outer Sunset as we do, our desire to keep the relationship alive is tempered by a desire not to go to far from home. And thus a new, intermittent SFist feature is born, in which we review restaurants in the oft-overlooked Richmond and Sunset. We hope your inspired to try new some new places, and we'd love to hear and recommendations of Westside joints you'd like to see reviewed, so please send them our way.

As usual, we sat in bed and talked about going to dinner. Our usual haunts were brought up and discarded. Eventually, we hauled out the aging PowerBook and pulled up Citysearch, and started searching restaurants in the Sunset. We noticed that every page was topped by "featured listings" for two restaurants: Cajun Pacific and Lotus. Since Cajun Pacific closed their doors as a full-serve restaurant in September of last year, they were out of the question, so Lotus became an intriguing possibility (because Internet advertising works, damnit). They describe themselves as "Modern California Cuisine in the Sunset," and a look at their menu (look out, it's a text download to actually see the menu, for some strange reason) showed an impressive, but not disturbingly ambitious breadth of Asian-influenced dishes.

Read on after the jump to hear what happened after we got out of bed and headed up to Noriega and 21st Avenue...

SFist is proud to welcome our first local advertiser, Westside Organics! You may have noticed their handsome banner up there. We gave them a break on price because, well, we need the money to buy t-shirts for the contributors - as lame a thanks as that is for all our hard work. They were nice enough to throw in three deliveries of standard fruit and veggie boxes as a thank you. Not that we don't love fresh organic produce delivered to our door, but we thought we'd reward a lucky reader for their devotion.

Since there's no free lunch -- at least since 2000 -- we're gonna make y'all work for it. So we came up with a little quiz that will not only send all sorts of sweet, sweet traffic Westside Organics' way, but will hopefully convince you that we actually think they're a good deal and are proud to have such fine people to do business with.

After the jump will be three questions. First person to send in the correct answers, by the time stamped by our inbox (not your delivery time -- we can reset our computer clocks, too, you know), gets the grub. Sorry, but we can only offer this to folks in their standard delivery area, so make sure to check if you're eligible. Of course SFist contributors need not apply []. The winner will be announced in the next Culinary Digest -- just in time for holiday entertaining!
Ed. Note: Sorry guys. But t-shirts, I promise!
