Four jazz venues that serve grub - 1300 On Fillmore, Yoshi's, Rasselas and Sheba Lounge - are asking the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency "for additional loans and to restructure debt to survive." These venues, which have already received public financing during the Fillmore's redevelopment, is asking the city of San Francisco for a total of $2.4 million in new loans. Here's a tip, 1300 On Fillmore, Yoshi's, and Rasselas: stop playing jazz. It's a......

Last night's show at the Fillmore was on fire. Literally. Before headliners Dethklok hit the stage, an electrical fire was "sparked during Soilent Green's opening set," according to SF Weekly. Fans were ushered out of the building posthaste. Yikes. Sadly, Dethklok couldn't go on, and the show was canceled. Dethklok's MySpace page breaks the news to their fans: SF Show at the FILLMORE CANCELLED BECAUSE OF FIRE: Last night June 6th a small electrical......

UPDATE: Sunday's show is cancelled. Tonight's Social Distortion show has been postponed - rescheduled show information forthcoming. Please hold on to your tickets. Wow. Another cancellation. WTF? So many bands have been sick in the last few months, starting back with The Decemberists in November. It seems that Social Distortion worked too hard last night and they are all puckered out. We haven't heard whether Sunday or Tuesday's show is on or not. We'll just......

In our ongoing effort to bring music to your ears, this week we're giving away two special prize packs from a long-standing Bay area band, The Mother Hips. Formed back in 1991, it's been six years since the band last released a full album. They're back with a new studio record on April 3rd called Kiss the Crystal Flake. Said singer/guitarist Tim Bluhm: "It is very different from anything we recorded in the past.......

Special video bonanza! Last night we made it out to the Noise Pop BAGeL Radio happy hour at Thee Parkside just in time to see Peloton. That's right, in case you haven't heard or experienced it yet, Noise Pop is in full swing here in San Francisco. Thee Parkside was packed with festivalgoers and BAGeL fans and DJ Ted couldn't help but beam proudly at the full house. It's good to see music fans supporting......

We had a great week of music last week, starting on Thursday night when Live 105's Madden invited us to join him on air. Along with SFists MattyMatt and Jon we talked for a half hour about local music, Muni and of course Gavin's hair. Madden was a friendly and gracious host and we thank him for inviting us! On Monday night Cursive packed The Fillmore for a straightforward set of songs from their new......

This past Monday we headed down to The Fillmore to see Cold War Kids open for Editors. Cold War Kids had all the right ingredients to stand out from the pack, especially with singer Nathan Willett’s piercing voice. None of what they played sounded derived or expected, which is an impressive feat these days. Judging by the resonance of crowd favorite "Hospital Beds", we’re witnessing another dazzling San Francisco export. Editors played their catchy and......

Won't you join us in our love for The Constantines? Their album Tournament of Hearts made our Top 12 of 2005, and we're not sure if this makes us pretentious or just lazy, but we're going to quote ourselves: "The Constantines first two records were dark, raw and sophisticatedly aggressive, with songs that were down in the mouth and determined at the same time. Grit, rasp and stubble remain on this record, but a softening......

How's this for a normal pre-teen existence: school, soccer practice, homework, gig with Pearl Jam. It's all in a day's work for the sisters in Smoosh. At the ages when most teenage girls are locked in their rooms distraught over the politics of popularity or some unrequited crush, Chloe (12) and Asya (14) are out in the proverbial garage writing edgy pop songs on keyboard and drums. The best part? It's not a novely act.......

After travelling to Austin to see about 30 great bands in three days at SXSW, next week we don't even have to leave town for a phenomenal music festival. Monday brings the start of Noise Pop 2006, San Francisco's annual indie rock smorgasbord. All-festival passes and several shows are already sold out, but SFist will be bringing you coverage so not to worry. On Friday one of our favorite bands, Metric, brings their erratic art......

We're at SXSW, so this week's column is a day late and a dollar short. It's a bird, it's a band! OK, since we're late for a date with some breakfast tacos in Austin, we will cut and paste a description of Guillemots from Allmusic.com: "The multinational Guillemots, comprised of English singer and classically trained pianist Fyfe Dangerfield, Brazilian guitarist MC Lord Magrao, Scottish percussionist Rican Caol, and Canadian double bassist Aristazabal Hawkes, use their......

Before anyone accuses us of having a soft spot in our hearts for bands from Texas, let us just go ahead and admit we do. That leads us to this week's giveaway featuring Pilotdrift, a band from Texarkana. Don't get any ideas about their sound from their hometown though. Their music is atmospheric, symphonic, theatrical, and the singer even sounds a bit like Bowie. Their debut album is out now on Good Records Recordings, owned......

Rarely a day late, always a few dollars short. Michael Strickland gets the headline of the day, with "Satanic Love Cult at City Hall." Leila at Hypnagogica spends Valentine's Day beating people with pillows and thinking about love. Scott Beale was there taking photos. Jane Kim spends it worried about Eddy Zheng's deportation hearing. Lots and lots going on in urban development. A major landlord in Japantown wants to sell. Even more troubling are......

Our concert picks for the week of 1/19-1/25. One more reason why SF is a great city for music: the feature length film about the annual Coachella music festival is showing here this week. You may have noticed that we're giving away 'Fisties this month. Did you read about our 'Fisties in the music category? We declared that the local boys in Two Gallants made the Best Career Move this year by signing with iesteemed indie label Saddle Creek Records. One of the perks of signing with an indie is artistic freedom, which the band exercised on the b-side of their just-released "Las Cruces Jail"/"Long Summer Day" 7-inch. Enter......

We're giving thanks today for all the great venues in San Francisco, which attract bands of all shapes, sizes and levels of fame to our fair city. Our show pick of the week is tomorrow night in Hotel Utah's tiny two-floor room with Phosphorescent and Castanets. It's another great week of music, with more of our favorites in town including Stars, The Oranges Band, our beloved Spoon and one of our newest favorites Silversun Pickups. The Bay Area should be proud of at least two high profile record releases from local artists this week. Oakland's own The Lovemakers drop their major label debut Times of Romance on Interscope Records, and San Francisco's John Vanderslice keeps it real by releasing his latest, Pixel Revolt, on indie stalwart Barsuk Records. Even if you can't afford to rush to the CD store on Tuesday, we wouldn't want you to go without some local......

Our concert picks for the week of 8/11 - 8/17. It's August, and if we were anywhere else in the country, the sun would be beating down on us relentlessly and we'd be wishing September would come around to bring back the touring bands. But this is San Francisco, so we put on sweaters when we leave for work and we still get good concerts even during the touring lull that is August. And here......
