Their fellow BART riders were then invited to partake in the feast.

"It was a little awkward at first," he told KTVU. "It really took one person to take a plate. The Thanksgiving train then headed back east from Daly City to Dublin, then back to West Oakland.

Bay Area TV Man, who wishes to remain anonymous, told KTVU he wanted to share a positive moment with the community, and BART is an iconic symbol of the Bay Area. He said he plans to organize similar community events in the future.

“My goal is to inspire people to look out for each other and bring more positivity to the Bay,” he told KTVU. “The mask is a reminder that you do not need a title or a face to make a difference. But whichever of those categories you fall into, you will inevitably have still forgotten an item or five that you’ll wish you had remembered to buy. And there is always the possibility of running out of beer, wine, or spirits.

That's why we’re listing all of the big SF grocery chains’ Thanksgiving Day hours below. We cannot possibly include every corner store in San Francisco, so keep an eye out for those in your neighborhood. But we can confirm that all of these Bi-Rites, BevMos, Safeways, and various other grocers with full beer, wine, and liquor aisles are open on Thanksgiving Day. (Note: The hours listed are only for November 27, 2025.)

Trader Joe’s and Costco will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. (Photo by Bettmann Archive/Getty Images)

While Thursday is the 50th anniversary Indigenous Thanksgiving Sunrise Gathering, the genesis of the event dates even earlier. It was established as a tribute to the November 1969 – June 1971 occupation of Alcatraz by Native American activists. A Lakota Sioux activist at the time argued that because the federal government gave up the former prison island and deemed it “surplus property,” by treaty, it should have been offered to Native Americans.

The activists did not get any of their demands met (they demanded deed and ownership of Alcatraz Island), but their 19-month occupation became a media cause célèbre and elevated the Native American rights movement to national prominence. It also eventually won a number of Native rights policy concessions out of the Nixon administration.

That occupation served as the inspiration for the Indigenous Thanksgiving Sunrise Gathering that started in 1975, and still continues 50 years later.

A group of Sioux Indians protest at Alcatraz in an attempt to claim the land under the allowances provided in an 1868 treaty with the U.S. government. An estimated 25% of San Franciscans don't have enough to eat, according to the Department of Public Health's Food Security Task Force. We hope to not have that happen on Thanksgiving, which is why the Examiner reports that for the 15th consecutive year, the city is distributing thousands of free turkeys. According to a release from the mayor’s office, the 2021 Turkey Giveaway will hand out “more than 5,500 turkeys.”

Thanks to Oakland Mayor @libbyschaaf and San Jose Mayor @samliccardo for joining us today for the 13th annual Turkey Giveaway! Good Eggs CEO Bentley Hall explained the situation in an apologetic Twitter thread on Thursday.

"Early [Wednesday] morning, at a time when we should have been picking orders for our biggest and most important day of the year, we experienced a multi-hour warehouse system outage," Hall writes. "Once the system was back up and running, we were too optimistic about the how long it would take to fully catch up and get all of your orders out the door."

Hall said he was "devastated" and "deeply disappointed" at the failure, and said, "I am fully responsible for the results, the inadequate [communication] and the frustration."

Customers began complaining on social media on Wednesday as alerts arrived from Good Eggs about delivery delays. In some cases, San Francisco customers received notices that only some of their groceries — "the proteins, pies, Good Eggs Kitchen items and produce" — would arrive between midnight and 8 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. As one friend of SFist wrote on Facebook, "Good Eggs you had one job! How bout you don’t leave my raw turkey on my porch between midnight and 8 am?"

The delays appear to have begun before this Wednesday system outage however, according to another social media user who said a scheduled Tuesday night delivery delayed until Wednesday morning, and then never arrived.

One Twitterer, heatherlynn, posted that her "elderly, high risk parents scheduled an order two weeks ago" and then waited up until 2 a.m. Thursday for the delivery, which never arrived. And on Thursday, no groceries arrived and neither did any communication from Good Eggs.

And to think just three weeks, the company was blogging about the 3,700 turkeys they ordered from suppliers in advance of the holiday.

Good Eggs has promised refunds for missed orders, but the Mercury News says the company declined to respond to a request for further comments — and they're likely all in a crisis PR meeting right now.

That same friend of SFist said she had not yet received any refund as of Friday, and added, "A refund for stuff that never got delivered isn’t exactly making it right. It’s just the start of making it less wrong."

SF's Own Mary Risley Would Like to Remind All Amateur Cooks: 'Just Put the Fu**ing Turkey In the Oven'

It's been a few years since SFist has reposted local cooking school founder Mary Risley's delightful advice for roasting a Thanksgiving turkey — and it bears repeating in a year when a lot of people may be trying to do this for the first time at home and not with family.

SF Restaurants, Food & Drink

mary risley

Thanksgiving

Jay Barmann

It's been a few years since SFist has reposted local cooking school founder Mary Risley's delightful advice for roasting a Thanksgiving turkey — and it bears repeating in a year when a lot of people may be trying to do this for the first time at home and not with family.

Risley and her now closed Tante Marie's Cooking School posted the video below to YouTube in 2011, and plainspoken teacher that she is, Risley didn't mince words about the traditional Thanksgiving bird.

"Just put the fucking turkey in the oven," she says. But if you’re trying to buy tickets online, you can’t. While the event is free, boat tickets to Alcatraz are not. Those tickets are only available through Alcatraz Cruises, and they’re currently sold out. But according to an event press release just issued Wednesday morning, “a limited amount of tickets will be available for purchase at the dock beginning at 3:00 a.m.” Thursday morning (SFist confirmed with organizers that those tickets will be released). You can also try the Facebook event page discussion for boat ride tickets, but there are certainly more people asking than offering there.
Videos of hamsters enjoying human-looking meals are nothing new to YouTube, but this particular hamster, Matilda, is somewhat new to the platform, and actually has a whole channel devoted to her and hamster care instructional videos.

And this miniature Thanksgiving spread made especially for Matilda to stuff in her tiny mouth is pretty impressive. Look at that slice of pie!

"I have been hungry before," Amanda Ngo, the owner of the Mission District grocery store Duc Loi, tells neighborhood website Mission Local. Knowing the power that a good meal has to bring people together — those in need and those of plenty — Ngo will be serving 1,000 people lunch for Thanksgiving tomorrow. Starting at noon, her store, which recently expanded with a branch in the Bayview, will cater to the any and all.

Ngo tells Mission Local she's still looking for volunteers to come by the market at 2200 Mission Street today. Need convincing to pitch in? Just take a look at this heartwarming video.
