Serialized gem / siren song Tales of the City drew many folks to SF. Well, it brought us here, anyway. And the character of Mary Ann Singleton acted as a temporary stand-in until many of us arrived. To wit:

We're thrilled to the gills that the dailies are learning about this cool new sex podcasting thing all the kids are doing with their computers.

The creative team behind J.T. Leroy should send James Frey flowers, since his little revelations have given the J. T. Leroy hoax story a sort of also-ran quality. However, we were pleased to see the San Francisco Chronicle finally pick up the story and give it a well-sourced local angle. First up: the local literary Who's Who with regard to who was sucked in: Dave Eggers, Susie Bright, David Wigand, Michael Ray, Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman.

Ah, nothing like controversy to get the week off to a good start. Susie Bright isn't particularly happy after lending JT her support early on (scroll down for more from Susie in the comments). And Edward Champion reminds us that JT isn't the only one lacking a firm grasp on the line between fact and fiction, with James Frey under the microscope. Municide publishes a response to their own flight of fancy, purportedly from an actual Muni driver. We think the response would be better if we knew it came from a crack-smoking Muni driver with a criminal record and Hollywood friends, but you can't have it all, can you?

Anil Dash shares some timely insights into online communities. Danah Boyd finds herself caught in the middle of the debate over Wikipedia. Tom Foremsi and felow journos sup on Google sushi while their old employers crumble around them. And Jeff Nolan explores some novel theories about Yahoo's purchase of del.icio.us.

You think it was rough to live up to your parent's expectations? What if your mom was acclaimed author Anne Rice, and your pop was not quite as famous but still critically lauded Stan Rice? It's enough to make you want to go to med school, to try to master a craft as far from theirs as possible.

With Dr. Hunter S. Thompson moving on to bigger and better things, writers, critics, stoners and other hangers-on are organizing tributes around the country and around the world. But we have a feeling that the only one Hunter himself would have attended would be right here in San Francisco at the Edinburgh Castle Pub. Sure, Jahn Wenner will probably throw some blockbuster event full of literary luminaries in New York, but we all know that Rolling Stone lost any counter-cultural relevance it may have had when they moved across the country, and it's in San Francisco where the independent spirit and the embrace of the surreal that was Thompson's legacy still lives on. From the press release:

The newly single, and recently more vocal, Gavin Newsom can have his pick of the staff to bring as a date to someone's first anniversary party. Congratulations to all the happy couples who got hitched last year in San Francisco -- especially friends of SFist Ed and Norm up in Silverton, Washington. You guys are such a cute couple. Sorry about the damn state Supreme Court.

Okay, it's a little bit of a stretch to call Susie Bright a 'Bay' blogger, unless you're talking about Half Moon Bay, since she lives in Santa Cruz. But she spent many a year as what could only be described as a San Francisco literary impresario and raconteur, so we're calling it close enough for government work. Regardless, there aren't a lot of other blogs that feature musings on the nature of the Brad and Jen breakup media coverage and tales of hanging with the Zap Comics crew within the space of a week.
