As the Costa Rican paper the Tico Times reports, the intruders then reportedly assaulted Van Dyke and fled with some of the couple’s valuables, including one of their vehicles.

Per the Chronicle, it’s unclear what happened during the events leading up to Van Dyke's death, but his body was found under a bed with a sheet over his head. He appeared to be asphyxiated and had multiple stab wounds, and there was reportedly a knife found next to his body.

“My brother was a very benevolent, giving person who would help just about anybody,” Kurt’s brother, Peter Van Dyke, told the Chronicle over text. “Kurt would never hurt anybody, and he was always there when you needed him. Everyone that he met knew this about him.”

The Chronicle reports that Van Dyke was the owner of Hotel Puerto Viejo, a popular hostel in the beach town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, which is a short drive from his home in the town of Cahuita, both located in the southern portion of the Limón province. The paper notes that while drug trafficking and other types of organized crime are present in the province, the small beach towns where Van Dyke spent his time are typically limited to petty crimes, such as theft, pickpocketing, and break-ins.

“We have the Police delegation in Playa Negra, the cantonal, which is the most modern in the country,” wrote Roger Sams, president of the Southern Caribbean Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, per the site Surfer. “We are working hand in hand on security issues. It shocks us and hurts us, because the Caribbean has been very calm.”

“There have been no cases of violence reported like this against tourists. In recent months there has been no violence or assaults,” Sams continued. “This is an isolated case, he is the owner of a hotel, not a tourist, it has not to do with tourists and the people who come to visit us.”

As the site Islands.com reports, gang and drug trafficking-related crimes have historically been centered around the province’s capital, Puerto Limón, but the opening of a new port there in 2019 has resulted in the spread of organized crime and trafficking into surrounding areas. Per the site, homicides in Puerto Limón account for 25% of all the homicides in the country.

Per the Chronicle, Van Dyke, who got his first surfboard at age 7, was born in Santa Cruz to Gene and Betty Van Dyke, two pioneering, surf-loving parents who were also prominent in the farming community, as the family has owned Van Dyke Ranch in Gilroy’s Gavilan Mountains for 60 years.

“Kurt loved the ocean, our farm, animals and his family,” said Peter Van Dyke, per Surfer. “It’s a very sad time because of all the great memories we have growing up together, farming and surfing.”

“We remember your spirit, your energy, and the light you brought into the lives around you,” wrote a friend of Van Dyke on social media. “Some people leave footprints — you left waves.”

Image: Kurt Van Dyke/Facebook

Field Notes: SF Photobook Fair, Annie Sprinkle’s ‘Bazoombas,’ and Local Indigenous-Owned Businesses

Fundraiser for Madrone’s Oscar Myers; local Indigenous-owned businesses; processing trauma through surfing; learning about SF via Muni; downtown alley transformation; Photobook Fair weekend; Annie Sprinkle celebrates Earth and boobs; lavender and bees; SF’s 55-acre garden.

Arts & Entertainment

muni

indigenous people

Native American

Oakland

downtown sf

mural

public art

photography

Annie Sprinkle

Santa Cruz

sex education

madrone art bar

Fillmore

bolinas

surfing

petaluma

San Francisco Botanical Garden

Leanne Maxwell

Fundraiser for Madrone’s Oscar Myers; local Indigenous-owned businesses; processing trauma through surfing; learning about SF via Muni; downtown alley transformation; Photobook Fair weekend; Annie Sprinkle celebrates Earth and boobs; lavender and bees; SF’s 55-acre garden.

Rolling conversation

Tik-Toker Daisy, who goes by solo.dais on the app, recently moved to San Francisco from Georgia and decided to ride every Muni line from start to finish. Thornton also coached Pan Pacific Championships gold medalist Sarah Anderson (now Sarah Anderson Cramer).

“Rich had one of the biggest impacts on my life,” Anderson Cramer said in a Facebook post. “He was an outstanding person and someone I truly loved and respected. And a few weeks ago, the world lost a legend, as Wise passed away at age 74 — three years after closing his eponymous surf shop.

Friend Arnold Wong posted to Facebook about Wise's passing, writing, "He kept vigilance in having a place for local surfers to come and hang out and talk shop, offering the newest and latest surfboard designs. A quiet humble man, who didn't take sh*t from anyone, with a no nonsense approach to running the longest running surf shop in SF history."

Wise Surfboards was indeed the longest-running surf shop in the city before it closed, if not the first — that honor goes to surf legend Jack O'Neill, whose surf shop opened at Ocean Beach in 1952 and closed in 1966 after he and his family relocated to Santa Cruz. But Bob Wise and his surf shop, which ultimately became a three-story affair at 800 Great Highway, were touchstones for the local surfing scene, particularly in the 1970s and 80s — in the pre-internet days when you needed to call the store and hear Wise's daily recorded outgoing message to know what the conditions were like at Ocean Beach that day.

"For what it’s worth, conditions today are..." Wise's message would usually begin.

The Chronicle covered the closure of Wise Surfboards in late 2019, at a time when a store employee said business had been down overall. Surf shops endured through the early years of e-commerce in part because surfboards were difficult to ship, and were still a product that consumers want to see up close and touch.

Wise Surfboards also maintained an informal honorary club called the Double Overhead Association, which included a group of local surfers and photographers, and if you succeeded in surfing a wave that was double your height, you got your photo posted to the wall inside the shop — a special Ocean Beach honor.

But by 2011, Wise was telling Surfer Magazine, "As far as business goes, the Internet is actually wiping most of us off the map." And, he noted, that business had been great when his shop was the only game in town and the only surf shop north of Santa Cruz, but that had also changed over time.

When he started the business, Wise shaped and glassed his own custom surfboards out of a shop on Wawona Street. But the business ultimately grew into selling surfboards from dozens of brands from around the world as well as wetsuits and other gear.

Wise, like many longtime surfers in SF, lamented the fact that there was little sense of community or culture left in recent decades on the local scene.

"Years ago, it used to be that the guys that surfed out here, everybody knew everybody. Most of us lived by the ocean," Wise told Surfer Magazine a decade ago. "You really couldn’t live inland and be a surfer. When I was a young guy, if you were on the other side of town, if you were five miles away, you could miss it, you know. There was no way of knowing. So it’s a whole different deal right now. Surfers are scattered, and I really don’t think there’s a surf scene and a surf culture, per se."

As Glenn Brumage, executive director of Surfing Heritage and Cultural Center, told the Chronicle three years ago, "There would be no surfing without the surf shop. You found out information where to surf, you met people who surfed. There was no other place to get the information needed."

RIP, Bob Wise.

Top image courtesy of Wise Surfboards

French Bulldog, Cherie, Wins This Year's World Dog Surfing Championships

Along the Pacifica coastline this past weekend, beachgoers were treated to the usual array of breathtaking views, bouts of cetacean gymnastics—and, also, canines hanging 10 (or 20).

Arts & Entertainment

surfing

Matt

Along the Pacifica coastline this past weekend, beachgoers were treated to the usual array of breathtaking views, bouts of cetacean gymnastics—and, also, canines hanging 10 (or 20).

Sure, most dogs fancy catching tennis balls, but ruffly 50 special pups this past Saturday chose to, instead, snag swells off the shores of Pacifica State Beach, competing in the 2019 World Dog Surfing Championships.

YESTERDAY. He estimates it was 16 to 18 feet long, and a photo that Stanley shot before the shark swam off does indeed show an extremely enormous fish.

"I was sitting on my ski watching the surf when from the corner of my eye, I see something huge rising up from below," Stanley says, and he explains that as he saw the shark approaching a surfer, he zoomed up to it on his ski and the shark turned around and swam away. He then went about giving the surfers rides back to shore, one by one, just to be safe.
<div width:100%="" max-width:100%="">

Shark!!
As Stanley narrates to SFGate, "As it came up, it rolled over on its side to look at me with its giant, dark eye. And I could see scars and cuts all down its body, like teeth scars. From all my 'Shark Week' watching expertise, I knew that it was a female." The detail there, per SFGate, is that females often end up with such scarring while mating, because the marine animal kingdom is brutal.

Stanley adds, "The trippiest thing about the whole encounter was the way it was looking at me. It looked into my eyes. We made eye contact."

The Mavericks surf competition looks to be not happening for the third year in a row, but that doesn't mean the surfing hasn't been good at the famous break.

Waves have been seen at the break near Pillar Point as high as 50 or 60 feet, though recent surf heights have reportedly been smaller than that, and today they're peaking at around 10 feet, according to Surfline.

Mavericks came close to happening on December 17 but got pushed back when a storm moved in and caused the waves to get too massive.
"How often do you get a chance to see a dog ride a surfboard?" spectator Toshio Hirano asked SFGate.

All the time, apparently. According to the Gate, there are "World Championship" dog surfing contests all around Southern California. Last year's Pacifica World Dog Surfing Championships (WDSC) winner, Abbie the Australian Kelpie, was on hand, having returned to the scene of her triumph from her home in San Diego.

"You want a dog to be mellow. I never grab her and put her on the board. I wait for her to get on by herself," explained Abbie's owner Michael Uy.

Dogs were awarded prizes for staying on their surfboard the longest. There was also a costume contest, wellness fair, and pet adoptions, not to mention tons of vendors, set up along the beach. One woman was selling doggie socks for $30 a pop. Hundreds attended this weekend's WDSC including, according to the Chron's Steve Rubenstein, an off-shore whale.

You may not know that the wetsuit was invented in San Francisco, but by some accounts it was, and its creator has just died after a long life in Northern California surf community. Jack O'Neill, the eyepatch-wearing icon of Santa Cruz, died peacefully at the age of 94 at his oceanfront home Friday, a place he's called home for 50 years, as the Associated Press reports.

O'Neill said he created his first neoprene wetsuit after experimenting with multiple materials to try to better tolerate the cold Northern California waters off San Francisco's Ocean Beach, where he moved in 1949 at the age of 26. He attended San Francisco State University, earning a bachelor's degree there, and along with wife Marjorie Bennett he opened a surf shop in his garage on Ocean Beach in 1952, where O'Neill wetsuits were first sold. He would later relocate his family to Santa Cruz, in 1959, opening a second shop there on 41st Avenue and built the O'Neill surf brand we know today, becoming the largest manufacturer of surf gear in the 1980s.

"All my friends said, 'O'Neill, you will sell to five friends on the beach and then you will be out of business,'" O'Neill often recalled, according to family members speaking to the AP. But little did they know what a huge business surfing and deep-sea diving gear would become.

There has been a dispute over the years, however, about who can rightfully claim to be the wetsuit's original inventor — it seems clear that it was created around 1949 or 1950, but as the LA Times reported on the controversy a decade ago, the family behind the competing Body Glove empire has tried to stake a claim to the invention, and many still credit Hugh Bradner, a UC Berkeley physics professor and Manhattan Project scientist, who claims to have done his own first experiments with neoprene suits in 1949, taking his first dip in one in icy Lake Tahoe. Bradner never patented the idea, and O'Neill says he and Bradner discussed the claim over the years, and O'Neill stuck to his guns that he came up with the idea all on his own — saying he discovered neoprene, a US military invention in WWII, lining the walkways of a commercial jet.

Whatever the exact truth may be, O'Neill leaves behind an enduring legacy for surfers in the Bay Area and Santa Cruz, and O'Neill Inc. and Body Glove are said to share in a half-billion-dollar-per-year market share for surf gear worldwide — with wetsuits selling for $200 to $500 apiece.

Surfing historian Matt Warshaw told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2012, "Of all the things that Jack is known for, I think his genius for marketing and promoting stood out." As the LA Times notes, O'Neill took his colorful personality to trade shows, making a name for his brand by dressing his own kids in wetsuits and dunking them in ice baths.

In 1996, O'Neill also founded a nonprofit that he was said to have considered his proudest work: O’Neill Sea Odyssey. The organization, using his own Team O’Neill catamaran, promotes ocean conservation education for children, and has taken nearly 100,000 school-age kids out into Monterey Bay since its founding, as CBS 5 reports. O'Neill called it "the best thing I've ever done."

Mavericks Officially Canceled Following Bankruptcy

Swell or no swell, there will be no Mavericks this year.

Arts & Entertainment

Mavericks

surfers

surfing

Jay Barmann

Swell or no swell, there will be no Mavericks this year. Following the news this week that organizers had filed for bankruptcy protection amid some outstanding debts and a lawsuit from sponsor Red Bull, the big-wave surfing competition has been officially canceled, as the New York Times is reporting.

This also means that the first year that the competition was going to feature women is a no-go.

Filing for bankruptcy is Cartel Management, headed by sometime record producer Griffin Guess and his supermodel wife Marissa Miller, and they said last week in a statement that they were looking to sell Titans of Mavericks, the brand and the not-annual competition, claiming that the Chapter 11 filing was "the culmination of a strategy designed to implement a sale of the assets and intellectual property of the companies to afford a buyer certain protections available only in bankruptcy."

Despite the fact that Cartel is apparently indebted to vendors and contractors to the tune of $1.9 million, with Titans of Mavericks also $776,335 in the hole, Guess doubles down on the news about the buyer in a statement to the Times, saying, "The bankruptcy filing came after having had several conversations with multiple interested parties who were looking at an acquisition that could happen quickly, with a minimum of legal complications."

Mavericks founder Jeff Clark, himself a well known big-wave surfer, seems to be calling bullshit on that, telling the Times that the three-year relationship the event has had with Cartel has been a mistake. "We thought they were the right fit for us, but they brought their own problems and are now going bankrupt," he said, adding, "Our primary focus has always been to support the men and women who surf Mavericks and to preserve the sanctity of the wave and support our local community. We have sacrificed much to create a stage for the world’s best big wave surfers. We are disappointed.”

Sabrina Brennan, head of the San Mateo County Harbor Commission which oversees the Pillar Point surf area near Half Moon Bay where Mavericks has taken place 10 times since 1999 — only in years when the biggest swells arrive between November and March — tells the Times that the current situation isn't exactly surprising. "This event has been plagued with problems since its inception," she said. "Trying to generate revenue from an event like Mavericks is a challenge. You need a more organized and committed group of people to pull it off."

Some surfers were apparently already in town awaiting the event, and hanging out in Half Moon Bay — especially after hearing about the 30-foot swells that were happening two weeks back. And now they are sad.

Conditions have to be just right for Titans of Mavericks, the world-famous, 1999-founded surf competition at Pillar Point Harbor near Half Moon Bay. There's no fixed date or guarantee the contest will go down every year. But when the waves are ideal sometime between November and March, organizers notify the world's best surfers, giving them just 24 to 48 hours to haul ass to Mavericks.

But last week, despite ideal-seeming swells, no such call went out, worrying surfers. NBC Bay Area discovered that the delay, which could be indefinite, was prompted by financial woes. Documents obtained by the news channel show the two competition organizers, Cartel Management Inc. and Titans of Mavericks LLC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy yesterday.

Cartel, whose co-owners are Titans of Mavericks founder Griffin Guess and his wife Marissa Miller, a model famous for her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue appearances, lost a $1 million lawsuit in Los Angeles late last year for failure to promote a sunless tanning product and salon. The dispute over Cartel's assets uncovered unpaid bills and unpaid contest permits.

There's also another lawsuit, this one with former sponsor Red Bull, who have live-streamed the event in the past. Red Bull Media House North America filed its lawsuit against Cartel just last Friday, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, citing breach of contract and unjust enrichment.

In the fall, organizers revealed this year's planned Mavericks competition was to be the first in its history to feature women surfers. "[It] feels great knowing they know want us to be apart of this rad big-wave community,” SF surer Bianca Valenti said at the time. Now it's unlikely they'll have the chance, although women regularly surf swells off Pillar Point Harbor.

San Mateo County Harbor commissioner Sabrina Brennan told NBC Bay Area she was unsurprised by the bankruptcy filing, wagering that "there will not be a contest this year." That's a shame, says Brennan: "A lot of surfers, men and women, worked very hard to get ready for this contest... it's a real letdown to hear about these financial problems."

This morning, Cartel issued a statement to the San Jose Mercury News claiming that the bankruptcy process is "intended to preserve value and accommodate an orderly going-concern sale of its business operations.” From that statement:

Since 2014, up to $3 million has gone into developing the brand and staging the annual event, which features the world’s best surfers competing on waves that can reach 60 feet. The Chapter 11 filings by Titans of Mavericks and Cartel Management represent the culmination of a strategy designed to implement a sale of the assets and intellectual property of the companies to afford a buyer certain protections available only in bankruptcy. Titans of Mavericks intends for such a sale to ensure a smooth and swift transition of the business and operations.

According to the Mercury News, Cartel also owes $280,000 to Fox sports and $6,000 to the San Mateo Harbor District as part of a government Contract. In all, there are 49 creditors with liabilities listed between $1 million and $10 million. If that's the culmination of a strategy, it was a bad strategy.

The famed Mavericks surf competition down near Half Moon Bay, which held its tenth event in February since being founded in 1999, will be welcoming female competitors for the first time when and if the the competition happens this season. As KRON 4 reports, six female competitors will be selected and announced November 1, which is the first day that the window of opportunity for Mavericks will open.

The big-wave surfing event, officially known as Titans of Mavericks, announced the first time ever Women's heat in a tweet last week.

Mavericks, as you may know, doesn't happen every year because it's dependent on there being a particularly large and consistent swell between November and March.

And as KQED tells us, "Women have never competed in the 15-year history of the event, although several women regularly surf where the competition is held off Pillar Point."

San Francisco surfer Bianca Valenti told Surfer Mag that this announcement came earlier than expected, since organizers had originally said they would be having the first women's heat in the 2017-18 season. "I wasn’t expecting this. But I think it’s awesome. I’m just excited to see the women’s side of the sport strengthen. It felt weird always asking for them to let us women in. So it feels great knowing they know want us to be apart of this rad big-wave community.”

As always, the competition will be announced with just 24 to 48 hours notice, and the 24 competitors then have to high-tail it from all corners of the world to participate.

Surfing is already pretty cool, but when you add dogs to the mix, things get, well, super freaking adorable. So, behold Saturday's World Dog Surfing Championship held in Pacifica. As NBC Bay Area reports, the contest brought out all the big dogs in the sport — including world-record holder Abbie (pictured above) and the renowned challenger Brandy.

As KQED News helpfully informs us, before Saturday there had never before been a dog-surfing competition in Northern California. That changed when over 400 dogs showed up at the beach to cheer on the competitors as they carved and cruised.

Top honors went to Abbie, Brandy, and Skyler. While Abbie and Brandy battled for first place on the water, KQED notes that back on the beach the two are the best of friends — which, let that be a lesson in sportsmanship to all your haters out there.

This was a bit of redemption for Abbie, who reportedly lost a surfing competition a few weeks ago to a cat/pig team. Abbie's owner, Michael Uy, adopted her from the Silicon Valley Humane Society 10 years ago, and some of the money raised at Saturday's competition will go back to the very same shelter.

“People ask me, how do you teach a dog to surf?” Uy told the East Bay Times. “You don’t. They first just got to like it, and they kind of discover surfing on their own. Abbie started surfing even before I did.”

Good dog.

Well it happened on Friday at the Coliseum in Oakland, with the help of that huge portable wave machine on a tractor trailer called the Gnarly Crank’n K-9 Wave Maker, and there is video of some of the contestants.

As ABC 7 reports, the organization behind the event, the Lucy Pet Foundation, brought the wave maker to Ocean Beach first on Thursday where the video above was taken featuring expert surfer Sully, the English bulldog, and an unnamed dachshund who is also quite adept at the surfing.

The Lucy Pet Foundation, who was ostensibly auditioning dogs Friday as part of a national tour in preparation for bringing the wave machine to the Rose Parade in January, is dedicated to reducing the number of pets euthanized nationwide.

While some surfers chase an endless summer, the Outer Bar Babes of San Francisco clearly aren't attached to ideal, sun-drenched conditions. They surf Ocean Beach. And tomorrow the group is showing inland San Franciscans what they can do at the world premier of their surf flick "It Ain't Pretty."

Dayla Soul and co. raised $36,000 on their Kickstarter to create the 70-minute film, and it's premiering tomorrow at the 15th annual San Francisco DocFest from the IndieFest folks. The Chronicle was hyping the film, which seeks to rebuff stereotypes of bikini-clad surf chicks and replace it with wetsuit wearing surfer women. As one surfer puts it, "I'm not being sexual out there. I'm getting rad."
