The Warriors were 4-1 on their just finished homestand and have won seven out of their last nine games. Since Jan 9th, when they last lost to the Blazers, they have been 16-6 and have gotten over 100 points in each of their games. The biggest number is 14, as in they are 14 games over .500, the first time they've been that since the 93-94 season. For those of you looking for some perspective, Kurt, Biggie, and Tupac were all still alive then. And now the bad news-- that in the West, this makes them only an eighth place seed.

Besides making the playoffs, obvs, the biggest intrigue for fans of the W is who their opponent will be in the playoffs. The eighth spot could get them either the Spurs or Lakers (ugh and really ugh). However, with the Suns, Mavs, and Rockets falling, the Ws could move up a few spots and get the Hornets (unknown) or the Jazz (double ugh). What does all this mean? That the West is brutal.

-Candlestick will no longer be known as Monster Park but will go back to being Candlestick. The reasons are complicated-- involving everything from meddlesome San Francisco politics to full on spite by the Yorks-- but we wonder what difference does it make anyways? Some company could buy the rights to that stadium and nobody would ever call it by the corporate name. It is and will forever be the 'Stick.

It's Got to be the Morning After

Here's todays sports news

misc

Baron Davis

baseball

basketball

berkeley

Bush

English Language

ESPN

George Bush

Giants

Golden State Warriors

House

Language

Monta Ellis

San Francisco Giants

Stephen Jackson

strip club

Suns

the game

video

Warriors

White House

world series

YouTube

Jon

Warriors 120 Suns 118- No, Shaq Diesel didn't play, thus depriving ESPN hours of blathering, but he was spied by our overlord Brock at a hotel and was described as "very tall." Monta Ellis, who is not nearly as tall as Shaq, did play and he continued on with his hot-hot ways by scoring 37 points. The Beard also pitched in with six straight points within the last three minutes of the game. This game went down to the last three seconds as the Suns, then the Warriors, each missed free throws to keep both teams from finishing the game. This win gave the Warriors a little bit of Joementum as they are now in a three-way tie for seventh place in the West.

-The YouTube posted above is of everyone's favorite strip club aficionado and the Warriors' main run and gunner, Stephen Jackson, rapping. Not very well, we might add. Somewhere in the background is also a fairly drunk Baron Davis. Say what you will about the Warriors, but they do appear to be a fun bunch.

-And now we give you one of the sweetest sentences in the English Language- "339 Days Until George Bush Leaves the White House." No wait, we meant this: "Pitchers and Catchers Report" and the Giants' pitchers and catchers (and a few others) have reported. The hitters will show up sometime later in the decade when the Giants actually acquire a few. Ha! We made a funny. Turns out the Giants already have a slogan-- soon to be beaten into your head by the end of the season-- "Warrior Spirit," complete with handy-dandy, butt ugly, camouflage styled t-shirts, soon to be protested in Berkeley. So hooray and huzzah everyone-- the Giants might not have a third baseman or first baseman, but they have a slogan! World Series, here we come.

It's Got to be the Morning After

Here's todays sports news

SF News

A's

As

baseball

Contra Costa

Contra Costa Times

David

David Stern

football

games

Giants

Golden State Warriors

goldenstatewarriors

headlines

homeless

Lane Kiffin

Miguel Cabrera

Monta Ellis

Oakland A's

oaklandas

Phoenix

Phoenix Suns

Raiders

San Diego

San Francisco Giants

sanfranciscogiants

Bay Area Sports

Stephen Jackson

Suns

The Warriors

Warriors

Jon

This actually happened to us-- we were walking down 16th street wearing our trusty baggy Giants sweatshirt (we like our sweatshirts baggy) when we walked past a homeless guy who actually said, "I like your sweatshirt.
Yes, some homeless guy called us fat. Needless to say, we did not give him any spare change.

Warriors 129 Suns 114- So the Phoenix Suns, a team that many pick to win the title this year and a team that was possibly one horrendous David Stern judgment from winning the title last year, came into the Oracle riding an eight game winning streak. So what happened? The Warriors whumped 'em. Monta Ellis had 31 points, including 15 consecutive points in the fourth quarter, and Stephen Jackson had 32 to beat PHX. The Warriors have now won six out of seven, leading to the inevitable joke about how they've totaled the amount of victories of both football teams, but as everyone's in a good mood about football, we'll leave it better off alone.

-It looks like the Raiders victory over the Chiefs is going to delay the Coming of JaMarcus at least a week as "Long Balls" Lane Kiffin has already announced Duante as the starting QB next week against the Broncos. We're not sure what the point of all this is either, but maybe it has something to do with the fact that the Raiders are technically only three games behind division leading San Diego.

Uhhh, come again?

Damn, we hate being this good. Was there ever any doubt that Don Nelson would use the Warriors first round pick on a guard? With big men Jason Smith and Tiago Splitter still on the board, the Warriors went with Belinelli, a 6'6" shooting guard from team Climamio Bologna. Belinelli, who looks like he's about to hit puberty any day now, has good size for a shooting guard and a nice shooting touch. He has drawn some comparisons to Ray Allen, but Draft Express lists Mike Miller as a best-case comparison, so . . .

Fresh faces and fresh hope for the Warriors after a draft day that had more action than a Warriors-Suns game. Now, who are these guys again? Photo from Golden State Warriors official website.

This pick would make absolutely no sense, using the team's only first round pick to further strengthen their only undisputed strength, the backcourt, if not for the real move of the day. And by move, we're talking about a wicked, slashing, crossover into the lane for a double-pump two-handed tomahawk of a move.

The Warriors have traded Jason Richardson to the Charlotte Bobcats for the rights to Brandan Wright.

An undisputed crowd favorite and heart and soul of the team, JRich will be sorely missed by Warrior Nation. However, it was evident from the beginning that Richardson was not one of Nellie's favorites. Add in his decent trade value, the $11 mil he's owed next year, and the fact that he plays a position at which the Warriors are stacked, and the writing was on the wall.

NBA Basketball: The Western Conference Playoffs

Revel in it Bay Area NBA fans: this year the Western Conference playoffs mean something, because <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2007/04/20/EDGEBOS8KK1.DT...

SF News

Amare Stoudamire

Angeles

basketball

Bay Area

Bryant

clubs

Dallas

Dallas Mavericks

ESPN

games

Golden State

Golden State Warriors

Greg Buckner

headlines

Jason Terry

Kobe

Kobe Bryant

Kurt Thomas

Lakers

Los

Los Angeles

Los Angeles Lakers

Mavericks

Mike Wilbon

money

NBA

News+Sports

Phoenix

Phoenix Suns

Raja Bell

running

Shawn Marion

Bay Area Sports

Steve Nash

Suns

The Lakers

Warriors

Western Conference

chris

Revel in it Bay Area NBA fans: this year the Western Conference playoffs mean something, because for the first time in 13 years, the hometown Warriors are part of the party.

So let's take a quick drive down the lane and see what the Warriors are going to have to deal with as they knife their way to the Finals. (Yeah, we know, but just roll with the sentiment. It's been 13 years and there's an abundance of pent-up enthusiasm to be dissipated.)

8. Golden State Warriors (42-40) vs. 1. Dallas Mavericks (67-15)
Their gaudy record may be the best in the Association, but Dallas has a major, major weakness heading into this year's playoffs: the Golden State Warriors. The GS Dubs have won six of the last seven matchups between the two squads, including five in a row and all three games this year. What's the Warriors' secret? It's their backcourt. In a league of matchups, the Mavericks find themselves facing their evil twin. Both teams are soft up front (the Mavs are so desperate they signed 44-year old Kevin Willis out of retirement earlier this month -- ouch), which cancels out the Warriors primary deficiency, but the Warriors' guards are far superior to anything the Dallas backcourt can muster up. Look for Baron, JRich, Monta, and SJax to dominate Jason Terry and Greg Buckner. Prediction: Warriors in six.

 Playoff bracket graphic from NBA.com.

2. Phoenix Suns (61-21) vs. 7. Los Angeles Lakers (42-40)
OK, the story lines here are 1) with a healthy Amare Stoudamire back in the lineup, the Suns feel that this is their year. 2) This series is a rematch of last year's exciting seven-game first-round series. That series, which featured the dogged defense of Raja Bell on the not-to-be-denied Kobe Bryant, stirred bad blood between the two clubs, so expect things to get chippy. 3) The aforementioned Veinte Cuatro. How many points a game will Kobe average for the series? On ESPN's Pardon the Interruption yesterday, Mike Wilbon joked that the over/under for Kobe's ppg in this series is 45. Take the over and enjoy the show, but don't put your money on the Lakers. Phoenix is a much more complete team this year, with Stoudamire and Kurt Thomas bringing depth and breadth to the interior, while two-time MVP Steve Nash, high-flying Shawn Marion, and super sixth man Leandro Barbosa might as well be running on a 440 relay team. The Lakers finished the season on life support and Phoenix will have no trouble pulling the plug on them this year. Prediction: Suns in five.

The Warriors: This is Do-able

Far be it for us to be the voice of optimism, but, are you ready for this Warrior nation -- the...

SF News

basketball

blogs

ESPN

games

News+Sports

Phoenix

Bay Area Sports

Suns

the Valley

Warriors

chris

Far be it for us to be the voice of optimism, but, are you ready for this Warrior nation -- the playoffs are doable, this year. Just as others seem to be abandoning ship, we step in to illustrate how miracles can happen.

If not for some unkind scheduling that left the squad trying to keep up with Phoenix on the tail end of a home-and-road back-to-back, a surprisingly frequent scenario that has not been kind to them this year, the Warriors would most likely be sitting at 19-17 right now, two games over .500 this late in the season for the first time since 1993-1994 and in a virtual three-way tie for the seventh and eighth playoff spots. Unfortunately, it's hard to get respect when you haven't even sniffed the playoffs in 12 years.

It's hard to beat the Suns, period, let alone on the road with tired legs. So please overlook Sunday night's 128-105 sleepwalk through the Valley. It is just one minor setback, . . . on the way to the playoffs?

Yup. Check yourselves, but if the playoffs were to start today, the Warriors would be the first alternate (#9 seed). That's a moral victory right there. Yes, there are four more months of the season to play, but it's heartening to know they're still in the hunt. Many's the January of yore that Warrior fans wistfully pined for the lofty scent of .500 and just the faintest whisper of hope.

Beneath the rosy glow of third place in the Pacific Division though roils a restless roster.

Baron Davis suited up last night against the Suns, unfortunately, literally. The Diddy sat out last night's game in street clothes because of a strained rib cage, an injury he sustained in Saturday's win over Seattle. It was his first trip to the sick bay this year and his first trip to the pine in a while. Despite his career proclivity to injury, for some reason, coach Don Nelson has been playing Davis serious minutes. Like 35.8 minutes per game minutes, by far the most on the team. And now the Baron is hurt. Why Nellie? What is the point of huge minutes in November?

Another meaningless preseason game? Nope, it's opening night tonight for the Warriors at the Oracle. Here's everything you need to know, from the Warriors perspective, and from ours.

The Warriors hope to start the long road back to respectability tonight in the tip-off to the 2006-2007 season. Photo from espn.com.

The Warriors went 0-4 against the Fake's last year, so this is the perfect opportunity to get the season started off on the right foot, and it's a great chance to start making a dent in one of the areas of improvement that we identified for the team. But uh-oh, we've got the Lakers winning the Pacific Division over the Suns and Clippers this year, and last night, without their main man, the Fakers took down the Dry Heat with a come-from-behind victory. Damn those Fakers, damn them all to hell!

Oh yeah, the first 10,000 fans through the turnstiles get a free Warriors schedule magnet! That's almost worth paying $6 for BART, $75 for a ticket, and $9 for a beer. A free Warriors schedule magnet -- good to see the team is already putting all that Oracle money back into the team and the community. Supposedly, shitty nosebleeds are still available, if you're interested. The Google appears rife with them.

But since The Warriors are on TV more than 70 times this year, including tonight on FSN Bay Area, and you can also hear the game on KNBR 680 radio, we're going to avoid the traffic, save a little money, load up on free food, enjoy quick bathroom access, and not have to worry about a designated driver while we watch the Goldies hammer the Fakers from the spacious comfort of our recliner. Tip-off is at 7:30. See you there.

The Warriors: Efes Pilsen, It's Turkish for Beersketball

Let the PR horns boldly announce it from the highest rafters: The second Don Nelson era is off to a flying start.

SF News

Andres Biedrins

basketball

Brewers

Cal

cal state

Denver

Division II

Don Nelson

Dujuan Wagner

First Division

games

Golden State

Lakers

Mike Dunleavy

Mike Montgomery

Monta Ellis

News+Sports

Pacific Division

Sonoma State

Bay Area Sports

Suns

the game

The Warriors

Warriors

chris

Let the PR horns boldly announce it from the highest rafters: The second Don Nelson era is off to a flying start.

Last night, the Warriors beat up on Turkish squad Efes Pilsen in their first preseason game of the 2006-2007 season. The final score was 120-66, and it wasn't that close. The Warriors were already up 28 at half time -- ah, that has a nice ring to it. The Brewers, from the vaunted Turkish First Division, aren't a premier European team by any stretch, and that's even if they had key players Baris Ermis, Antonio Granger and Nikola Prkacin, none of whom made the trip from Istanbul. But and yet, they lost by only 16 to Denver on Tuesday, and they did just nab their seventh Presidential Cup, so . . .

. . . so it's better than losing, but let's just keep things in perspective. This is the equivalent of USF scheduling Division II cupcakes like Cal State Stanislaus and Sonoma State to puff up their confidence before heading into conference play. No complaints here -- the Warriors can use all the puffing they can get -- but this game should in no way be used to validate the return of new/old coach Don Nelson or his small-ball system.

Before the game though, Nellie wasn't seeing it that way. "This is called an ass-whooping game" Nellie boasted, "we're going to open up a can of ass whoop and see what happens." (Note to Nellie: We believe the proper phrase is, "open up a can of whoop-ass.") And ass whup they did. Killer Warriors blog Golden State of Mind was in the house last night and reported that team looked sharp and fast, with Monta Ellis, Andres Biedrins, and Dujuan Wagner looking particularly good. Even franchise centerpiece Mike Dunleavy looked competent. In fact, seven Warriors scored in double digits as Nellie used more different combinations and looks in the first half of this game than former coach Mike Montgomery used in the last two years.

Last night, they sleepwalked through their game with the Phoenix Sunburn like it was a preseason scrimmage, losing at Phoenix 112-99 and dropping below .500 for the first time all season. At one point during the Suns game, the War-bricks were 3-18 from the three-point line; they could muster no offensive energy or discipline at all in the second half. It was one of their more lackluster performances of the season.

And despite a good deal of clumsily generated buzz out of the War-wiggums front office about being in the market for Ron Artest or some other significant new piece of the puzzle (note to Chris Mullin, if the Artest deal doesn't work out, Steve Francis might be available), the recent mini-break came and went with nothing to show for it except Gwen Knapp's backhanded attempt at hometown support for garment-less player personnel emperor Mullin.

The War-winks have done the first part. They've got talent and chemistry, but not in enough quantities to get past the first round of the playoffs. This was clearly evident last week when the War-wizhows lost to division leaders the Suns and the Pistons. True, the games were very close and very exciting, but as with all the War-womps' games with division leaders this year (vs Suns, vs Clips, vs Spurs), they lost.
