Even more rain blanketed the city today, flooding streets. From the Mission to Hayes Valley, the streets are soaked. Please drive carefully.
It's currently pouring cats and puppies outside SFist HQ, and we feel woefully under-informed about this development. We just read this morning that the heaviest rain was supposed to hit north of here, and, well, this looks heavy to us! Another typhoon remnant, you ask? No, but The Weather Underground is now noting this "heavy band of rain" moving across the city, and drivers are advised to be careful in their commutes -- especially if you're heading east or north where flooding may occur. And is it just us, or is all the downpouring lately feeling way more Decemberish than Octoberish to you?
Here are some lovely images from the aftermath of yesterday's storm. Thanks for washing the city, Mother Nature!
Are you receiving us? Do you have electricity and such? Apparently 10,000 Bay Area residents still do not, and some major power line connecting Northern and Southern California was knocked out near Monterey and total power coming our way has been cut by a third.
This just in: Project Runway winner Christian Siriano (author of Fierce Style: How to Be Your Most Fabulous Self) has canceled his Litquake event tonight in Corte Madera. Why? Because, sadly, he "won't cross the Golden Gate bridge in the bad weather." .
In the middle of a conversation about roaring fires and Muir Woods' Pelican Inn with San Francisco scribe/on-air talent Beth Spotswood, she informed us that Mill Valley is "blasting the emergency sirens." (Mill Valley, by the way, performs their weekly emergency alarm test on Saturdays.)
Hey guess what! It's raining! So here's a little palate cleanser today that could be considered the progressive-house antithesis to yesterday's "Storms" by Stevie Nicks. It's called "San Francisco Rain" and it's by Italian house music artist Marco Lys, featuring vocals by Mooli. Download the track from iTunes here.
This dastardly tree, at Haight and Broderick, came tumbling down, nearly crushing this cute cyclist.
Presumably due in part to this morning's weather, CBS 5 is saying that "[t]he CHP reports a fatal accident has closed Highway 1 at Devil's Slide.
Get out those water wings, kids! The worst of the rain is expected to fall today between, um, right now (7 a.m.) and 7 p.m. tonight, and there's a wind advisory in effect until 11 a.m., at which point the gusts of 60 to 70 m.p.h. should subside and leave us with just mildly unbearable wind and rain through tomorrow. The 280-101 connection at 6th Streetis closed due to flooding. PG&E is already out there fixing power lines, Pacifica is bracing for wind damage, and Santa Cruz is bracing for mudslides in recently burned areas.
In honor of typhoon Melor and the impending five inches of rain with which she'll blanket the Bay Area starting tonight, we present to you a demo of Stevie Nicks' "Storms," one of the greatest songs about a storm (and yet so much more) ever written.
Excuse us if we're a little groggy -- but yeah, how about that thunder this morning! Turns out there was at least one lightning strike (that enormous boom everyone near downtown heard around 8:30) to a transformer near Grove and Octavia, causing a power outage. SF Appeal has a tipster who notes another transformer hit at California and Broderick causing folks in Pacific Heights to lose power. The Mercury News (the Chron is still hungover and sleeping it off) reports that the earliest outage affected 36,000 homes, and power remains out for about 500 homes. The thunderstorm, which was mostly a "dry lightning" storm but we saw some rain here, caused a few grass fires up north too. P.S. If it hadn't been for catching the weather last night, and it being September 12th, we totally would have leaped out of bed in terrorist attack mode.
The recent (and much-needed) rainfall in the Bay Area has resulted in power outages, fallen trees, and road closures. Hail has been reported in Potrero Hill. The Upper Haight was "like a monsoon." Even a flood advisory (as of 10:30 a.m.) is in effect this morning. But! A brief fdry spell is expected to start Wednesday, which will be followed by even more rain on Friday. Woo hoo! (Be sure to check Weather Underground for all your meteorological needs.)
A reader writes in declaring, "Wimpy rainstorm cuts power to 4,400 in Cole Valley, and...?" Your editor's power went out briefly, but that may be because he lives in a 100-year-old Victorian that shakes when the spin cycle starts. Anyway, is your power out? Please use up your laptop battery's last bit of juice to tell us all about it.
The sky, she is upset.
We didn't see or hear and lightening and thunder. Did you? And where is this pea-sized hail we've been promised? No signs of them at SFist HQ in SOMA. Sheesh. (Although there have been reports of an unidentified icy, fluffy, white substance found over in the East Bay.) Anyway, brace yourselves, because this most recent storm has prompted the California Highway Patrol to issue a warning drivers to... slow down. We will update with any further requests of vehicular sedentary states as the come in to us.
Good grief, this Chinese New Year business sure does go on for a long time. This weekend, it's a New Year Parade and a New Year Community Fair that'll be tying up traffic. A ton of major east-west lines will be affected on Saturday afternoon -- the 5, the 71, the 38, the F, the 1, and so on.
Jesus, have you seen those ads for this movie "Hancock"? Is it us, or is there something insaaaaaanely racist about them? Let's break it down: Will Smith plays an African-American superhero -- the first big-screen African-American superhero since, um, Robert Townsend in 1993's Meteor Man? Oh, that's right, there was that black sidekick in "The Incredibles." And Halle Berry as Storm. And Wesley Snipes as Blade ... so, okay, there've been four black superheroes in the last 15 years. But Will Smith's the first black leading-man flying superhero, which is a very cool and progressive thing to happen ... except that he's apparently a homeless dude who's borderline retarded and keeps getting in the white folks' way.
Dear AlertSF,
What with last week's and (and presumably this week's) manic storm activity, John Vlahides at 71Miles reports that this week is week to play hooky. Reporting that the Sierra Crest is "dumping over ten feet of feather-light snow," why not take a day or three off of work to head up to higher altitudes and frolic in the cold?
Oh, the joys of electricity. We in our satellite Sunnyside SFist office had been without it since 8:43 this morning. Power was finally restored at 4:20 (hot!). We immediately plugged in our computer and iPhone and powered up. We couldn't believe all that we missed today! Britney losing her kids, Brazil losing some alligators, Gay tax breaks - wow!
Since we're reportedly under the breeziness of "hurricane"-like winds, can we name the storm? If so, can we name it "Mary-Kate," then? Great.
Because you can't go home. One of our guilty pleasures during storms is sitting around and looking at live traffic updates to keep track of the mayhem. We snapped this screenshot just now. Accidents and incidents literally every minute? We'd be glad we're taking MUNI except that it's closed at Market at 3rd...
First off, our heart goes out to all of you who took the Ferry this morning. Do you need dry some toast or Ginger Ale? Because: barf.
It's a freaking typhoon out there, and Muni wants you to wait 30 minutes for a bus. And then when it comes, it comes in threes! Just like celebrity deaths!
Evidence of a wintry day
You've still got the Berkeley World Music Festival today, and Indiefest's Hole in the Head fantasy/sci-fi/horror film fest is in full swing! Your other options include:
We have good news, and good news, and we also have more good news: you SFist readers have generated more TextMarks. So there are now additional Muni stops at which you can get arrival predictions via text-message, yay! If you'd like to generate a prediction keyword for your favorite bus stop, check out our instructions here. The full list appears after the jump, and we invite all readers to participate in the success of this fun experiment, since Muni's never going to get around to it themselves. And even if you find commuting to be boring as shit, we still love you.
