Austinist attended a town hall meeting about proposed noise ordinances that could undermine the city's future as the Live Music Capital of the World, and lamented the possible loss of Texas's only feminist bookstore. Throughout the week, they interviewed a bunch of indie fashion designers and D-I-Y websites—Etsy, Ornamental Things, 31 Corn Lane, and Aorta Designs—for the upcoming Stitch Fashion Show. That’s right, we said craft mafia. You got a problem with that? We hope not, because this group is taking over the city, organizing crafters of all stripes, helping to build up a community and a movement that’s showing no signs of slowing down.

The first Craft Mafia was formed by three crafty business owners in Austin, Texas in 2003. The women came together to offer support and inspiration to one another, help set business goals, and to make sure they kept having fun in what can be a challenging lifestyle and occupation. They were so successful the group began to grow, with crafters all over the country asking if they could use the same name. Today there are 47 Craft Mafia’s -- lovingly labeled ‘famiglias’-- spread out across the US and Canada with the original Austin Craft Mafia still acting as the legal main entity, and Craft Mafia’s across the country as official chapters. The mafia’s work together and very distinctively on their own, meeting up at Craft Fairs all over the country and working hard to promote and support the DIY lifestyle in their individual communities.

We were invited to sit in on the SF Craft Mafia's monthly meeting at the Craft Gym this past Sunday (yes there’s a craft gym in the city and we promise that’s a story for another post). We walked in mid-meeting to a brainstorm on some upcoming events the group is planning. We felt privileged sitting at the table with these powerful women who play such a key role in the delicious underbelly of the SF craft world. We listened in as they hashed out ideas and figured out the best place to get unfrosted cupcakes for a cupcake decorating station at their next event. These are smart, lively women and listening to them gave us a sense of security-- we couldn't think of a better fitted group to take on the responsibility of making sure the craft scene in San Francisco continues to thrive and grow. One thing became abundantly clear as we sat there, these women provide a necessary anchor for crafters and artists seeking out help and resources in their own endeavors. With members including: Jamie Chan-Herrera, owner of MaryJane’s Attic, Barbe Saint John, a mixed media artist who runs Saints & Sinners, Andrea DeHart aka Crafty Bitch, Jane Logan and Jackie Ortega, owners of Craft Gym, Leslie Yang, the woman behind Feisty Elle, Jessica Neaves, creator of Future Momo Jewelry, Wendy of My Windup Bird, and Hope Meng, Melissa Alvarado, Melissa Roeters, the owners of Stitch Lounge, the group has a tremendous amount of experience and expertise to offer up.
But truth be told, after spending yet another $15 on getting slacks hemmed we're begining to stare at our useless fingers with a tinge of resentment. Fortunately there is Stitch.

Located at 182 Gough, the sewing lounge lacks dirty martinis but compensates with plenty of down and dirty project-based do-it-yourself classes. We'd love to sign up for a handbags 101 or to experiment with T-shirt reconstruction, but we don't want to run the risk of sewing through a finger or two (what do you think the waiver's for?) so we'll start with Uber Sewing Basics I: The Machine PLUS.

At long last, we're ready to wind the bobbin, loosen the hand crank and learn to backtack. The sewing machine with the sweet brand name of Pfaff feels very much like a car. Especialy when we lift our foot from the pedal and this very familiar thought runs through our head: "Shit, it's not stopping."

There are no brakes to slam here, so if we want to win the grand slam of sewing, we need to practice. Which is fine because the $50 class includes a Stitch card for 1.5 hours of studio time. If we manage to hem 4 pairs of pants the class will have paid for itself.

If you are under 30 of course your dog needs to be on myspace.com, where your canine can communicate with other edgy dogs, rabbits, cockatiels and humans. At myspace your dog can join groups like “dogspace”, “bark for books” or “horny mutts of myspace”. Or you can just feed your canines voyeuristic side by search doggie profiles from around the globe such as our favorites like Cortez (check out the Lost Puppy pic in his friends comments) and Stitch, a Canadian dog who seems to have nothing better to do than write to other dogs 24/7 . You could spend hours grazing on all the cool things dogs are doing online these days but the bottom line is the dogs on myspace are having a lot more fun than on dogster.

Reading myspace profiles is probably more fun for dogs than going to our next dog-friendly bar, Pop’s Bar on 24th at York Street. The bar is usually very crowded, so it is hard to find a comfortable place to lay down. There is also no water, food or treats – in other words, dullsville for dogs. The only redeeming qualities are the photo booth in the back and they don’t mind if you sit on a stool at the bar, which is cool. 1.5 St. Bernards.

Hark! Do you hear the hosannas of angels wearing roomy striped ponchos and the clicking of bamboo sticks? That's right -- the hipster goddess of knitting, Debbie Stoller, is in town promoting her new book, , a sequel to her massive hit, the original Stitch and Bitch: The Knitters' Handbook. Stoller, who also edits the zine Bust, is all about bringing knitting to the new millennium: reclaiming knitting as a feminist art, organizing knitting circles (or Stitch 'n Bitches), encouraging a community of online knitters and crafters, and now, writing a new book that features even more contemporary knitting patterns from contributors across the nation, such as snazzy rasta caps, yoga mats, bags with pictures of Jim Morrison on them, and Henry Rollins dolls, among others.

Stoller will be bringing her intarsia mojo to San Rafael's Dharma Trading Company tonight. Tomorrow, she'll be launching a new program with Amtrak, Stitch-n-Ride, where knitting circles can take Amtrak from Oakland to Sacto every Tuesday (and free patterns from Stoller's book will be distributed -- you can find them online too). If you're a knitting commuter, meet at 5:30 in Oakland, take the train to Sacto with Debbie, and then triumphantly carry her aloft a carriage made of knitting needles to Rumplestilskin's for another reading.

Those of you who don't commute by train, Stoller will be back in SF on Wednesday, for an appearance at Urban Knitting. And hey, can someone teach us how to knit with double-pointed needles?
