Smack dab in the middle of spring, asparagus is adorning menus. Here are a three choice dishes (two found at local restaurants, one you can make yourself) featuring the herbaceous, perennial plant.

Gitane: As pictured above, this asparagus dish is classic asparagus with shaved ends, egg yolk, prosciutto and greens. Perfect with a glass or three of rosé.
6 Claude Lane, S.F., 415-788-6686

Gialina/Ragazza: Grab their asparagus pizza with preserved lemon, green garlic, farmer's pecorino and egg. Grab two. They're that good. Reservations are not accepted, but you can call for pick-up.
Glen Park: 2842 Diamond (at Bosworth), 415-239-8500; Divis: 311 Divisadero (at Page), S.F.; 415-255-1133

Raw Asparagus Salad: This is our favorite way to enjoy asparagus. People either love it or hate it in its raw state. We're staunchly in the former category. Kellan Hori, private chef and recipe developer for Blue Moon Brewing Company, suggests a simple chopped asparagus salad (around 1/4-inch cuts, we'd guess) with chive oil, lemon zest, and Caramailzed shallots. "A great raw application to a seasonal ingredient, " she adds.

And as for that post-digestion odor? Here's a fun quote from Treatise of All Sorts of Foods (1745) by Louis Lemery, "[Asparagus] cause a filthy and disagreeable smell in the urine, as every Body knows." Indeed, we all do.

[VIDEO] Watch The de Young's Flower Tower Go Up

The de Young is paying tribute to local floral designers with their annual springtime mash-up of art and flowers.
The de Young is paying tribute to local floral designers with their annual springtime mash-up of art and flowers. From March 19 to 23, the show features the work of more than 100 of the Bay Area’s most innovative floral designers, who have created arrangements that draw inspiration from and pay homage to the museum's permanent collections.

And it's totally going to be over before you know it and tourists will litter the city with their touristy ways and everything will be simply horrid until the first chill of fall. (Not really. Summer is rad.) Why not take advantage of asparagus' all-too-brief moment in the sun by making a reservation at Michael Mina to wolf down his warm asparagus salad? What's in it, you ask? Hold on, we'll tell you: it's assembled with a slow-poached Jidori hen egg, black truffle, and burrata. It will run you $22, but as always, it's worth it.

However, if you can't swing by Mina's restaurant, any number of places should have the verdigris spears on their menus. Failing that, head to your nearest farmer's market, or any plain market, to grab a pound or two. (Pst, we recommend blitzing up some asparagus pesto.)

This year, though, the GG Park folks say that "tulips are expected to be in fine glory from March 15 through April 15."

He called his Palm Spring bout of being blotto a "foolish mistake." (Also, he's kind of attractive. Par course nowadays to get elected mayor, we guess.)

Public intoxication and nerve-wrecking close calls aside, it's been a most fascinating race. This election gave the city of Vallejo the chance to land its first ever openly gay or...openly black mayor. (The former nailed it.) It also almost goes without saying that Osby Davis, Cloutier's opponent, has requested a recount. Which? Makes sense. Although the whine of "recount" has some politicians coming off as infants eating a bowl of mashed sour grapes, a race like this seems to warrants another count. Maybe two. Davis tells the Vallejo Times Herald, "I still have a desire to serve as mayor."

The rage of fire is completely encapsulated in the first EP with its screaming vocals and huge guitar riffs. The force of nature is felt in the powerful, "Firebreather" - though filled with rage, the listener feels the wrath of a 4-alarm fire without any professional response. You are left with a gaping, simmering hole. With the background keyboards (that sound a bit like a chorus of angels) on "Burn the Fleet," Thrice has created a world of kings who are fighting to victory. Victory that comes with the price of death. "But the fire continues to rise, and it shows not a hint of any fear in our eyes." An anthem of courage and triumph, Thrice continues to create an inferno of fury and immediacy that comes with the very nature of fire.

Volume II changes, completely. The haunting, yet somehow soothing, "Open Water" creates instant imagery with the words, "I am drowning, in a digital sea. I am slipping beneath the sound." The mix of electronicism and Dustin Kensrue's vocals is mesmerizing and intoxicating, something that is new to Thrice. "I'm cold and alone, drifting in the open sea. Caught up in regret, tangled in nets, instead of your arms wrapped around me." Thrice found the power of the sea and set it to music with perfection. Though we don't hear the sea's rage, we do feel the heartache and pulsating rush of the waves and the calm after the storm.
We expect to be blown away by the orchestra. We actually demand it. But the surprise came from Thomas Hampson. Das Lied von der Erde is written for two singers, a baritone and a tenor. The tenor, Stuart Skelton, did not impress us as much. Our companion on Wednesday night, SFist Rita, liked him because she found him endearing, being drunk all the time. And truth be told, out of the three songs Skelton did, one is the "Drinking Song of the Earth's Sorrow" and another "the Drunkard in Spring." Skelton was the most comfortable in the last one, "Of Youth" where he could display a more melodic tone in a folk-ish tune. As a drunk, he came off as wobbly and overmatched by the orchestra. He did have the drunkard body language pinned down, though, turning the pages of his sheet music like he was throwing a punch, with a don't-mess-with-me game face that had us wondering how comfortable he was up there, and how immersed in the music he was.

As one commenter already pointed out today, famous people tend to die in threes: Bill Walsh, Tom Snyder, and of course, ABC 13’s Marvin Zindler from Houston, who -- while still tied-up with breathing tubes, in his hospital bed, and very pissed off at 24-Hour Fitness -- gave and gave until the very end.

But another one squeaked in there among those three: Ingmar Bergman. And on the ghoulish scale of celebrity worthiness -- better understood via the annual look-who-died-this-year montage at the Oscars, where the undulating volume of applause determines deceased stars' statuses -- Ingmar Bergman’s was way up there. (Our sister site, LAist, has a great tribute of the writer/director, which you can read here.) Sure, the Academy Award-winning director's style was sometimes synonymous with parodies of pretentious movie-making, but his work still totally astounds and entertains. His pretty, pretty movie-making skills were evident with such flicks like Fanny and Alexander, Smiles of a Summer Night (one of his only comedies, reason that this song entered our lives), Persona, and The Virgin Spring (inspiration for the grisly rape-revenge film The Last House on the Left), to name a few.

Travis Buck (.265 AVG, .371 OBP, .538 SLG, 6HR, 17 RBI) - A-

With the plethora of healthy outfielders at the start of Spring Training this year (my, how quickly things change), chances seemed slim that Buck, despite tearing up the minor leagues, would be able to break into the big league club, and looked to be starting the season in AAA. However, when Dan Johnson’s injury forced Nick Swisher to first base, the window of opportunity was cracked open, ever so slightly, and Buck took full advantage. Battling through injuries to his wrists and elbow (let’s be honest, ‘Athletics’ this year is synonymous with ‘Injury-ridden’), Buck has put up highly impressive rookie numbers and as the team is coming back
together, he looks to keep a spot in the big league lineup, while staying healthy. If Buck can remain healthy, and keep these numbers steady, he will be a legitimate candidate for Rookie of the Year, and a huge help to the power-starved A’s.

Shannon Stewart (.276 AVG, .357 OBP, .347 SLG, 2HR, 16 RBI) - B+

Shannon Stewart has just about lived up to his billing, putting together a nice little season so far in the outfield. Despite warning injury reports, he has stayed healthier than the majority of the team, and has been a steady presence in the clubhouse, and on the field. The A’s would like to see him hit with a little more power, but overall, there isn’t much to complain about.

Nick Swisher (.305 AVG, .433 OBP, .537 SLG, 9HR, 32 RBI) - A+

The biggest off-field move for the A’s so far this year was signing Swisher to a contract. More and more every day, he is looking like the best move the A’s have made since they traded Haren for Mulder. Swisher, who could be a Gold Glove candidate at first base, looks as good as any top players in the league right now on offense, and for a switch-hitter to put up the kind of
numbers that he has, it is pretty amazing.
Outfield

SFist Tonight

Who needs a little culture after a weekend of mayhem?
