Sony isn't about to limit its "cease and desist" rhetoric to journalists and networks who are publicizing information revealed in the wake of its giant disaster hack. Now, they're threatening Twitter itself with legal action over individual users whose tweets contain links to leaked material.

According to reporting from Vice, a letter was sent from Sony's crisis counsel lawyer to Twitter’s general counsel stating that if “stolen information continues to be disseminated by Twitter in any manner,” Sony will “hold Twitter responsible for any damage or loss arising from such use or dissemination by Twitter.”

Here's the letter, and below, the demands, which include "destroying" tweets. Not like people screenshot tweets or anything.

"We ask that you promptly suspend the Account Holder’s Twitter account and:
(1) notify us using the contact information provided below;
(2) take all reasonable actions to prevent your company and any of your employees, independent contractors, agents, consultants, account holders, or anyone who may have access to your files from examining, copying, disseminating, distributing, publishing, downloading, uploading, or making any other use of the Stolen Information;
(3) arrange for and supervise the destruction of all copies of the Stolen Information in your possession or under your control, particularly information protected under U.S. and foreign legal doctrines protecting attorney-client privileged communications, attorney work product, and related privileges and protections, as well as private financial and other confidential information and communications of SPE’s current and former personnel and others, confidential personnel data, intellectual property, trade secrets and other business secrets and related communications;
(4) confirm that such destruction has been completed; and
(5) comply with all future requests with regard to any other account holder seeking to disseminate the Stolen Information via Twitter."

Sony also asked that Twitter kindly share the legal threat with @bikinirobotarmy, aka Val Broeksmit, a musician posting screenshots of leaked Sony emails.

The big question this raises, which has been brought up before, is how Twitter might be responsible for content posted or linked to by its users. In the past, the company has said it would suspend accounts sharing the video of photojournalist James Foley's beheading by ISIS, and it now deletes abusive images and messages in the wake of Robin Williams’ daughter's complaints. But can Twitter really police the 500 million tweets that appear every day on the site?

At least we know Sony is hip to the popular Twitter dot com refrain of "Never tweet."

Metreon's PlayStation Store and SonyStyle Store to Close

Coming as a surprise to no one, Sony plans on shutting down the Pl...

SF News

Business & Tech

economy

metreon

recession

Sony

Sony PSP

Brock Keeling

Coming as a surprise to no one, Sony plans on shutting down the PlayStation Store and SonyStyle Store at the Metreon complex. As near to the heart to PlayStation fans as the Apple store is to Mac sect members, the Metreon saw lines circling the block when they released the PlayStation 3 in 2006. But now, due to the recession (not to mention the Metreon's jarring feng shui), both Sony stores will close later this year. According to The New York Times, "the PlayStation store’s decline is an emblem of bigger problems with Sony, which has seen its fortunes turn from first place in the console business to third place." All of this boils down to one question: Should one get a Sony PSP or Nintendo DS?

You Have Been Chosen to Recieve a Free Sony Vaio From Muni

OMG we're so excited! Well, unfortunately, it's because Muni isn't actually running its own list. Why not? Who knows. In fact, when we asked Muni for comment, they weren't aware that they even a mailing list.

But they do. And they've farmed it out to a Canadian Internet-mountebank company calling itself "Bravenet" that gives free online tools to gullible businesses like Muni -- tools that any junior-college programmer could create -- in exchange for customers' sweet precious delicious email addresses. And then, once Muni's supplied your email address to Bravenet, they send out ads, often directing you to sleazy sites that promise to send you a dinky laptop as soon as you sign up for huge amounts of affiliate-commissions. Lame!

So how hard would it be for Muni to avoid this slimy taint by just administering its own mailing list? In fact, it wouldn't be very hard at all. All that it requires are a little cash and competence.

Another jopb well done, Muni!
have

SF Sketchfest Giveaway: Fresh Faces of Comedy

The hilarious Eugene Mirman ...

misc

Bob Odenkirk

buy tickets

comedy

Fresh Faces

fresh_faces_of_comedy

Jessie Street

mezzanine

Michael Showalter

Punk

Rogue Wave

sf

SF Sketchfest

sf_sketchfest

sketchfest

Sony

TBS

Television

Zach Rogue

Leanne Maxwell

We are ecstatic that Tim and Eric will be performing (they really do an awesome show -- great job, guys), along with Bob Odenkirk and Michael Showalter. OMG! It's the Nicole Ritchie of laptops! (Ritchie before she got fat and pregnant, that is.)

It seems that the new MacBook Air, just unveiled a few hours ago, features multi-touch ability on its oversized trackpad, similar to that of the iPhone; some sort of crazy wirelessness; recyclable aluminum case; a mercury and lead free display; and you can buy the thing in two weeks, starting at around $1799. Read more about it here.

Dede, will you buy us one? Oh, come on!

One more thing, in cahoots with Touchstone, Miramax, LionsGate, Fox, Warners Brothers, Walt Disney, Paramount, Universal and Sony, Jobs also introduced iTunes Movie Rentals. You can keep movies for 30 days, "movies will be start playing less than 30 seconds after the download starts," and we'll still hold onto our Netflix subscriptions. Like most gay guys, they both probably say that they're versatile, but once you get them in bed? Total bitches.

Also, this sucks. Even gays in jail -- albeit hot, Genet-esque French Canadian jails -- can get hitched? But local U.S. fruits can't? Pft. Whatever. If the gays can't have the same stupid right to get married as he and she -- in lieu of our generation's separate-but-equal law: civil unions -- then give us back our mental disability status. That way we can start collecting all of those sweet disability benefit checks. Retroactively, of course.
The first people showed up around 8 a.m., and as of noon today, there were 500-1000 people in line. The line is going down Fourth Street and turning down Minna.

The line has 20 guards, who are handing out flyers labeled "bathroom pass" so those who had too many lattes this afternoon can get some relief without losing their place in line. Of the people surveyed, about half are hoping to flip their purchases on Craigslist or eBay -- though one other person is trying to sell his place in line for $250.

Sony is giving out tacos to the waiting hordes, and will give out energy drinks at 10 p.m. However, they're only guaranteeing Playstations for the first 700 or so people. Also, there's a bug in some of the Playstations being sold today -- some of them don't play older games. No way to tell if you got a buggy one until you get home after midnight tonight.

There's plenty of coverage all over the place, in particular GameSpot's media blitz and Joystiq's ongoing blog updates, dealing with the horrors of E3 so we don't have to. But what if you're only casually interested in videogames, and you don't care about all the lights and noise and information overload? Well, we cover the internet coverage so you don't have to. Here are our highlights:

Console Wars
Both the Sony Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii were fully unveiled to the public. The general consensus is that Wii won. Nintendo played up its motion-sensing remote controller, which now includes a speaker. Its first-party games such as and Super Mario Galaxy will use the remote to simulate shooting arrows, swinging swords, fishing, and hopping over boss monsters and eating mushrooms.

The PS3, on the other hand, will be extremely expensive and larger and heavier than the original Xbox. Much like the Xbox 360's release, the PS3 will come in two varieties: the outrageous $499 for a stripped down version, and the no-way-you've-got-to-be-kidding $599 for the version that people actually want. The biggest difference between the two versions is hard drive size: 20GB versus 60GB. Also notable is that the 20GB version has no HDMI output, support for other memory cards, or wireless internet.

It's going to be called "Wii."

Seriously. With a "distinctive ii spelling" that's pronounced like "we," "wee," "oui," and "Wheee!" Early buzz has been somewhat less than favorable. In Nintendo's defense, the company was forced to come up with a distinctive name to compete with another upcoming console, the Sony Deuxdi.

Kotaku has an entry about our state assemblyman, Leland Yee, and his ongoing quest to <del>ride the coattails of the hot-button topic of the moment</del> keep our kids safe from Grand Theft Auto. Yee spoke with a writer for gaming site 1Up.com, defending his position as being in the best interest of kids while still preserving the free speech rights for adults. Hal Halpin of the Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association responded to the article by pointing out that the statistics Yee used while making his argument were inaccurate, and that videogame merchants do just as good a job at policing themselves as movie theaters do.

Once we bought another copy of XP, that is — they're really not kidding when they say you can't grab just any old installation disc. As soon as it was all up and running, we quickly ran back to the Lucida Grande-and-pinstripes-and-brushed-metal safety of OS X. We're biding our time, like John Hurt at the dinner table, just waiting for the horrible incubating beast to burst out and spray us with blood and .sys and .dlls.

For those still wondering what Boot Camp means for Apple's future: last week, John Gruber of Daring Fireball.net wrote an interesting piece of perspective. In it, he reminds us that Apple's primary business is selling hardware, not software. Which makes the company's primary competition not Microsoft, as we all like to imagine it, but Dell, HP, Compaq, Sony, and the like. In that context, Apple's not shooting itself in the foot for allowing a competing OS on its machines; it's adding value to its hardware by letting users have machines that run two (or more) operating systems.

Over at Macworld.com, Jason Snell had a nerd slap-fight against USA Today's Andrew Kantor over whether Boot Camp portends the death of the Mac OS as we know it.

Meanwhile, John Dvorak is off his meds again, suggesting that what Apple really needs to do is open source OS X. Through the magic of spin, he manages to dovetail this perfectly with his earlier prediction that Apple is going to ditch OS X in favor of Windows.

And the only ones who really know what's going on inside the company, the rumor sites and information leakers, are finally scheduled to go to court in San Jose against The Man. Seeing as how we in the labs have no contacts and no real insider information, we're feeling relatively safe no matter what the outcome. What we do have, though, is a laptop that runs iPhoto and Civilization IV. So suck on that, Dvorak!
