SF Open Studios: SOMA/Downtown

Saturday marks the SOMA/downtown installment of SF Open Studios. All of the open galleries will be in the Eastern SOMA/Yerbua Buena area near SF MOMA -- the Yerba Buena neighborhood, if you will. Fourteen art galleries in the hood will open their doors for free art and free refreshments. Contemporary, emerging, and established artists will be featured at these galleries:

Osha Thai Takes Over Bong Su

Quickly becoming the Fuzio of Asian cuisine, Osha Thai according to Eater, will set up shop in the old Bong Su space at Third and Folsom, replacing the greatest-named restaurant in San Francisco that closed earlier this year.

Breaking: Twitter Founder Sells Home, Buys Home

The fine folks over at Curbed reported yesterday that Twitter co-founder Evan Williams (heretofore known as @ev) sold his SOMA penthouse (going for a scant $1,498,000) on Fourth Street. You know, that large megaplex across the street from K&L Wine Merchants? That one. Anyway, Williams bought a fancy new Victorian in Noe Valley. Charming! This comes on the heels of his partner, @biz, selling his own pad for fancier grounds. What's this mean? It means Twitter is doing well. Very well. (Can you give us some money, Evan? Oh, just kidding. Sort of.)

Scenes from a Trauma Shoot: SOMA

Another view after the jump.

It was a lusty, warm day at Folsom Street Fair yesterday, and people showed up in droves to show themselves off in their leather harnesses, bustiers, jockstraps and the like. They also showed up in droves to gawk at those who chose to dress up, and to enjoy some overpriced beer on what might well be the last summery day we'll ever know here in SF. Please enjoy this gallery of photos by Darwin Bell and Joey DeRuy. See even more (many of them NSFW) at Le Fag.

Central Subway Snags $9.9 Million

The Central Subway plan got a boost yesterday care of a $9.9 grant via an unknown donor. (Though, according to Curbed, the Federal Transit Administration might be the culprit.) MTA spokesperson Judson True tells Streetsblog that "the funds would mostly go towards preliminary design work, since preliminary engineering on the project is essentially complete." The total cost for the SOMA-to-Chinatown underground fun will cost a total of $1.57 billion.

The Sweet Cart Comes to South Park Tomorrow (Thursday)

Get ready, hungry worker bees buzzing about in the SOMA/Mission Bay/Rincoon Hill/downtown area. Dottie, the sweetheart of The Sweet Cart, will be selling her goods in South Park tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon. She will be out in the park from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. selling her signature (not to mention astoundingly delicious) cheesecake and red velvet cupcakes.

No Smoke, No Fire

Have no fear if you're walking down Second Street between Folsom and Harrison, just around the corner from SFist World HQ. That long line of fire engines hogging all the parking meters isn't responding to a ten alarm disaster, nor the opening of a new Hooters.

"Hot and Cold - The End is Here"

An overabundance of events happen this week: the SF Symphony's opening night gala tomorrow; SF Cameraworks 35th anniversary on Thursday; like, 9/11-y stuff, presumably. Anyway, as the end of summer approaches, a lot goes on.

Tonight Addition: DJ Spinderella at 330 Ritch

You remember Salt-N-Pepa's "Let's Talk About Sex", right? Sure you do. It's the GenX ode to safe sex that kicks off thusly: "Spinderella cut it up one time." Anyway, the cutter in question, DJ Spinderella, was an unofficial member of Salt-N-Pepa for a time in the '90s. She was the "-N-," if you will. And tonight, she will be spinning at 330 Ritch. Flavorpill reports that "hip-hop and soul party Pacific Standard Time throws the pioneering DJ a b-day bash, and the guest of honor will be on the ones and twos." That is to say, she will be manning the decks tonight in SOMA. Help her celebrate her birthday, won't you?

Fondue Cowboy: Comfort Food Comes to SOMA

After white-knuckling a Tablehopper absence -- Marcia Gagliardi, you see, is in the process of writing a book, hence her two-week sojourn offline -- we were relieved to find her waiting in our inbox today. One item that caught our tongue was news about the upcoming Fondue Cowboy, scheduled to open in the heart of SOMA very, very soon. Tablehopper reports, "What I found at the cozy 40-seat eatery at 1052 Folsom at Russ Street was a more grown-up spaghetti western theme. When I arrived, owner David Mur, and his construction friend Robert Harris were embellishing the bar you'd, ahem, saddle up to with warm multi-toned wooden planks that fill the base of the fondue, beer, and coffee bar. The opposing accent wall will feature cow skulls, Western-themed art, and here's to hoping, The Duke himself on the flat-screen TV!" What's more, since the place has a bar and involves pots of melted cheese, we plan on making it a home away from home. We're not kidding. Read more about Fondue Cowboy here.

Whole Foods Wine Robbery Stopped

Plug 1 of What I'm Seeing came across this scene at the Whole Foods located a block away from SFist HQ, over on Fourth Street and Harrison. He explains:

Sightglass Coffee's opening day was yesterday. Owners Jared and Justin are "super nice," according to Yelp. And their brew? Is billed as "artisan." And, from what we hear, pretty damn fantastic.

Vaginal Name Christens New Sweet Treat

Our pal Paolo at Eater has word that one of our favorite chefs in the city, the notably Sapphic Elizabeth Faulkner (Citizen Cake, Orson, Top Chef Masters), has a sweet new treat for her fans. They're called MuffWiches. (Chortle.) According to her most recent Twitter message, "These are the best MuffWiches yet. I've got them where I really like them!" Dive in.

Pizza Delivery Man Pistol Whipped, Robbed in SOMA

A little before 8:30 p.m. last night, an Amici's pizza delivery man was pistol-whipped and robbed at Third and Stillman streets. Police officers who arrived on the scene found the man lying unconscious on Stillman, his undelivered pizzas at his side. The victim, whose skull "might have been shattered," reported an officer on the scene, was whisked away to a nearby hospital. However, according to one of his coworkers, "He's doing fine now."

Local Master Chefs Compete On Tonight's Top Chef Masters

As SFist Deborah and your editor took advantage of Orson's first-ever lunch service today (we both recommend the fried chicken sandwich on parmesan bun, complete with expertly fried dark meat that made us binge), we got word from our regular bartender, Jessie, that they're having a quasi-screening party for tonight's premier episode of . See, famed SF chef Elizabeth Faulkner (executive chef/owner of Orson and Citizen Cake) will be a contestant on the show. So, we recommend you heading over to cheer her on to victory.

On Saturday Sunday at Yerba Buena Gardens in downtown San Francisco, the annual Israel in the Gardens Festival took place. As expected, it was more comfortable than your typical daytime outdoor public festival, complete with more shade, good bargains, comfy seating, less dairy, and almost zero SF progressives in attendance.

Food Truck Upate: French at Folsom / 7th Tonight

Finally, food from the back of a Toyota (or whatever) we can get behind. The upstanding citizens over at Eater tell us that French food will be available tonight at Folsom and Seventh. Good French good, that is. According to Chez Spencer's Twitter message, "Thursday, May 21 -Spencer on the go-French Take-away will be up and running on Folsom and 7th St at 6:00 pm." So, head over the SOMA, the best neighborhood in San Francisco, and taste some of chef Laurent Katgely's treats.

Described as a "generous woman who often gave money to the homeless," Helen Canafax, 63, was on the 600 block of Folsom Street on April 10 when an unidentified man swiped her purse and hit her to the ground. Canafax, according to reports "sustained serious injuries in the fall and died on April 26." The suspect at-large is reportedly "a black man between 35 and 40," weighing in somewhere around 180 pounds The suspect was wearing "a gray beanie-style cap, a red or black sweatshirt and dark-colored pants" on the day of the attack. If you know of any leads in this case, you are urged to call SFPD homicide inspectors Richard Martin or John Cleary at 415-553-1145, or the tip line at 415-575-4444.

SFPD Needs Your Help in SOMA Shooting Death

Cal State East Bay senior Jamonte Turner, 23, was gunned down at Third Street and Harrison at 2 a.m. shortly after leaving Boss Nightclub on April 18. Celebrating a night out with his colleagues, he and his friends were allegedly harassed by a group of guys once the club closed. A verbal dispute occurred outside the venue, leading to gunfire from the group of harassing men. As the friends scattered, Turner "was among those running on Third, [and] was shot from behind. He managed to make it across the street before he collapsed at Third and Folsom." He died at the scene. Police still have no leads as to who did this or the group of men involved. If you have any information regarding this case, please contact teh SFPD violent crime line at 415-575-4444.

Landmark Tomato for Sale

Perfect for your next Burning Man art car or, well, your next Burning Man art car, the big red tomato that used to siren in customers at the now-closed Vino e Cucina is up for sale. According to the Craigslist ad: "After serving for 18 years as a SOMA landmark for San Franciscans, the giant tomato is available for sale. It is huge and ready to be hung or displayed by the buyer. It is hollow metal and in great condition. Original cost was $5,000. Asking price: $1,500. The tomato is still hanging at 489 Third Street, San Francisco (cross street Bryant). Please call 415-722-9229 if you have any questions or would like to purchase the 'Big Tomato.'" To check out the massive tomato, go to the chronically empty lot at Bryant and Third Street to see it in all its plump, red glory.

Bacar Among Bernie Madoff Assets

Oh, this is terrible news. San Francisco restaurant Bacar, the contemporary American cuisine establishment in SOMA, is among the assets the Feds have their eye on. Why? Because it's associated with disgraced Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff. It seems that Madoff and his wife hold partial interest in the place. Madoff's wife been able to keep some properties which were purchased using the stolen money, so SOMA greatest place to get cheap oysters and reasonably priced drinks might live on. Will Bacar be seized? Who knows. Stay tuned.

I Can Haz Saifwerd?

For those who may not have seen this fly 'round the internet and back, we bring you, as a special TGIF treat, the S&M Kitty -- who for all we know hails from SOMA.

SOMA Bart Line?

These kind of public transit rumors pop up now and then, but a new Bart line could conceivably be in the works for San Francisco's SOMA district, at least according to reports. If actualized, the line would run along either Folsom or Townsend. Which would be a splendid thing.

SFist Blotter

FRIDAY / SOMA: On Stillman Street, between Second and Third streets, a 57-year-old man who was beaten by a group of men on Feb,. 15 died from injuries on Friday. Peter Azadian, who had been homeless and had been living under a door frame in the area, was beaten by four men early in the morning around 3 am. All four suspects fled in a sport utility vehicle, according to police. No arrests have been made.

Man Shot to Death in Hunters Point

An 18-year-old Oakland man was shot and killed in a Hunters Point public housing project. (Speaking of where to dine in SoMa, which is several bus stops away from Hunters Point, we recommend Orson. Elizabeth Falkner's ode to whimsy is perhaps the most underrated dining experience in the city. Why? Because we live in a Top Chef and Check, Please: Bay Area era. Dining out with friends has become an excruciating experience, where in everyone at the table feels the need to comment on what they're eating just for the sake of critiquing. And usually they're wrong. Hence why Orson was much-maligned by the pretentious set when it first arrived on the scene. Too obvious, they declared! Too busy, they whined! Not simple enough, they bellyached! Just because something doesn't look like it was hauled out of the kitchen from Zuni doesn't mean it doesn't deserve a place on your palate. What's more, its spacious bar is one of the best places to see and be seen in SoMa, from where you can see anyone from local politicos, to B-list actors, to power dykes, to Falkner's mother sipping martinis. Do check it out. Again.) No arrests have been made.

This video was taken near 6th and Stevenson yesterday. It's good to know that our contingent of SOMA nutter butters are still enjoying life to the fullest.
