Plastic Bag Ban to Expand?

While plastic bags in San Francisco aren't really banned -- look no further than Chinatown or any independently-owned liquor store to find a bag of crinkly delight -- San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi said "he wants the city bag ban to expand throughout the Bay Area and beyond and that the plastic industry has stalled legislation." (An aside: we fully support the chutzpah of any and all SF supes who want to wield their power outside their districts... and their city.) Mirkarimi goes one step further, saying he wants to introduce an ordinance "to strengthen the city's ban to require that grocers pay a refund to customers who bring in their own canvas bags and to eventually include a ban on paper bags as well." This comes on the heels of Save the Bay revealing the top-ten plastic bag hot spots in the Bay Area.

Thanks to loyal SFist contributing photog Steve Rhodes, we have these pictures of the sizable protest that went down in Union Square last night, in which activists, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi and local Iranian-Americans gathered to voice their support for the post-election protests in Tehran and to ask President Obama to support reform leader Mir Hussein Moussavi.

Committee Passes Ban On Haight Street Head Shops

The ordinance that Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi introduced to temporarily ban new head shops on Haight Street passed committee on Monday, which means that no more stoner shacks can open on the street famous for its psychedelic roots. While the ban won't hurt current head shops or pot dispensaries, the ban "would prohibit the opening of any new businesses that sell tobacco and marijuana smoking paraphernalia for a period of three years," according to reports. (And with 14 of them open for business right now, Haight Street has a pornographically large amount of them already.) In addition to bongs, rolling paper, and pot leaf decals, head shops also sell convenient cocaine bullets and glass pipes in which you can puff crystal meth or/and crack. On June 23, the plan will be heard before the entire board. And if it passes, you will only have 14 options left where you can perfect your stoniness.

Ban Foie Gras in SF?

Not learning the lesson Chicago had to after it attempted to / failed at banning (delicious) foie gras, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi told SFGate about a new legislative idea dimly blinking in his noggin. Ahem:

Ross Mirkarimi Says Yes to Nudity, Floats in Bay to Breakers

San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi spoke to Matier & Ross about the new Bay to Breakers rules, telling them that "there is no reason to go this far ... Nudity and floats are part of the spirit of the race." (Does this mean we will get to see Mirkarimi unleashing his stuff come May? One can only hope so.) Mirkarimi district includes much of the B2B route. And while he's pro-nudity, Mirkarimi tells M&R that the booze ban is "probably here to stay." An anti-Bay 2 Breakers rally is scheduled to shake up the squares at City Hall on Thursday at noon 11:30 a.m.

Honestly, we don't know if we really want to live in a San Francisco without pink plastic bags. While they still live on, today they moved closer to obsolescence. Today plastic bags were outlawed in chain drug stores and pharmacies. Nice. (Although we buy some embarrassing items at Walgreens now and then, so it's a bittersweet victory.)

Matier & Ross were all over this nugget of news today: bronze plaques will be placed in locations where the city's homeless have died. The "memorials" will be placed in Chris Daly and Ross Mirkarimi's districts, which include the Tenderloin, Civic Center, Haight-Ashbury and Western Addition. Each will be 2 feet by 2 feet "human-shaped plaques" and "[inscribed] with details of the deceased's lives and the circumstances of their deaths," according to the Chron. Let's just hope they don't look like the mockup the Gate created above.

Hey, remember way back in January, when Ross Mirkarimi declared that the housing authority had one year to get its act together or the city would take it over? Our guess is that he's going to have to introduce that legislation, because the SFHA is all over the news lately. If it's not Greg Fortner refusing Gavin's mass resignation request, it's the housing commission getting together about as often as some supervisors sleep at their houses!

So hey, remember that shooting that Ross Mirkarimi helped solve? According to the Chron, the cops are saying it was a vigilante father-son duo, out for revenge after the victim stole a gold chain from the son. Whoa!

WE LOVE IT WHEN ROSS MIRKARIMI SAVES THE DAY!!!!!! Remember when he stopped a robbery? And then when he saved the life of a guy in Buena Vista Park? And today, he caught two people involved in a drive-by shooting!!! (Thanks to commenter Rah for calling our attention to the story!)

Man, this dull-as-dishwater mayoral "race" is getting us in the blogging doldrums. Someone do something funny, quick!

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi's come out swinging at the lackadaisical response from Mayor Gavin Newsom on the state of Golden Gate Park, after public outcry that the city was more concerned about two dogs getting bitten by a coyote than it's been about the public safety and cleanliness issues created by homeless encampments and rampant IV drug use. (While Golden Gate Park isn't in any particular district is is District 1 (see comment), Ross's District 5 borders the park's southeastern half.)

We've been big fans of Good Magazine since their premier issue came out last fall. We love the inspiring stories they cover and the ways they present them -- graphics, design, and concept are given as much weight as the words. We also love that the staff is predominantly made up of young people -- much younger than we are, we might add. (Incidentally, bad-boy Al Gore III is the associate publisher.) Some recent,...

As we were waiting to pick up our lunch today at the excellent Chinese food place across the street from our office at the to-go table, we were idly flipping through this month's issue of Costco Connection magazine, the in-house publication of everyone's favorite roast chicken/toilet paper/gigantic muffin supplier, that they had lying around.

Saturday.... in the park... wish it were the Fourth of July! (That's the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra performing the Chicago classic above). Here's your events for today:

Man, we're bummed the Chron still hasn't put back up the pictures of the Canton Flower Shop and their stymied attempts to inspect the legendary shower in the back -- but we do have a new Matier and Ross column to summarize from the Tapioca Ed perspective: we call it M&R and Everyone We Know.
