Nevius continues his Homeless Encampment 2007 Tour with a visit to Corona Heights. His verdict? Not so good. He found twenty possible separate campsites as well as broken bottles and needles. Neighbors let it be known that the ever-popular "human feces" could also be added to the list. To make matters worse, there's a school, the Rocky Mountain Participation Nursery School, at the bottom of the hill and, well, won't somebody think of the children?

Neighbors told Nevius that they've called the city plenty of times over the issue but nothing has really been done. Part of the problem is that they're never quite sure who to call as various city agencies handle different parts of homeless encampments and there's not one agency responsible for handling it all.

Nevius has been on a tear lately. Last week, he took a tour of Golden Gate Park and wrote about all the homeless encampments he found there, even proposing a possible solution. Gavin had earlier made a big show of trying to clean up the park, but like almost every Mayor who's dealt with the situation, stopped walking the walk and talking the talk once the cameras left. Nevius' tour of Corona Heights was done after people in the city wrote to him telling him about problems in their nearby parks.

We're guessing you've heard of the super secret Spoon show at Cafe Du Nord on Saturday night with none other than Rogue Wave opening the bill. San Francisco is truly benefitting from the promotional push around Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, released this past Tuesday, with that Popscene show a few weeks back, this not-secret performance at Cafe Du Nord, and their upcoming appearance at the inaugural Treasure Island Music Festival in September. Sure, it could have something to do with San Francisco being situated between Britt's hometown of Portland and the promotional mecca of Los Angeles, but we're just going to tell ourselves that Spoon has a crush on our fair city. Forget all the rumors you've heard about tickets; the band's mailing list says to get to the venue early on the day of the show for a chance at yours. If you're lucky enough to get in, be sure to buy a record off of them because the first 50 buyers get a meet & greet with the band. If you can't get in to see Spoon, Vanilla Ice is performing at Red Devil Lounge. Yeah we couldn't believe it either.

Day Around The Bay

-- Are you ready for the genius that is Peaches Christ and her Midnight Mass cult-film series? Oh yes, yes! Finally, someone made a musical spoof of this classic porn flick. Because we were getting really tired of Rocky Horror. An off-Broadway hit (that was also big in Australia, apparently), Debbie Does Dallas: The Musical makes its San Francisco debut, courtesy of Stroke of Genius Productions. (Hmm, ya think someone created the company just for this show?) Actually, a few Ray of Light people are behind all this, namely Eli Newsom (the director here) and Christy McIntosh (as Debbie herself), both of Bat Boy fame. (Bat Boy is returning soon, by the way, is case you were unlucky enough to miss it last year.) Complete with a MySpace profile, Debbie Does Dallas: The Musical gets our vote for next not-to-be-missed underground musical, a blast for everyone, whether you have carnal knowledge of the film or not. And, late-night Saturday performances are "theme nights." End you summer with a bang.
Our man on the PNW sport beat, Seattlest Seth, has a modest proposal that could be just the thing to turn around the fortunes of the Golden State Warriors, and it has nothing to do with hiring some egghead from Stanford as coach. Chris Tomasson of the Rocky Mountain News in Denver is publishing a series of articles in an 'expose' about marijuana use in the NBA. Apparently, basketball players like to smoke pot! Well, who doesn't, really. But here in California, you can get a prescription. Seattlest Seth has the perfect solution:

I've always thought that Golden State Warriors should recruit the NBA's biggest weed smokers. They'd love the Bay Area because of the medicinal marijuana laws. Whenever they sprained their ankles or jammed their fingers during the game, they could recuperate with huge bong hits. Get Snoop Doggy Dogg as the team trainer and put a huge bag of Cheetos at the end of the bench and you'd be set. I'll bet Sam Perkins would come out of retirement for this.

Yes, we could definitely see Big Smooth now, taking a pass from J-Rich and lobbing a three from way outside the arc, with Troy Murphy and Mike Dunleavy watching red-eyed and laughing their asses off. They do call it Oaksterdam for a reason. We would suggest Too Short to be the trainer, though. Snoop's a SoCal beeyatch, and besides, he says he's given up the endo.

We wonder why Chris Webber never spoke to a doctor about getting a script for his back pain? In the meantime, the Sonics are at the top of their division while the Warriors, not surprisingly, are taking up last place in their own. Though The City did kick Seattle's ass at the Key Arena on Wednesday. For places to go for Warriors news (because it depresses us too much to write about it here), check out The City and Warriors Watch.

We love hobbitses! Peter Jackson actually planned ahead for the DVD releases of the three Lord of the Rings flicks and so filmed scenes he knew would only go in them. For Return of the King, Jackson added over 50 minutes to an already lengthy film, making the actual film portion of Return to be more than four hours. Deleted scenes include a battle between Gandalf and the Witch King, Farimir and Eowyn making more schmoopy eyes at each other, a cameo by Jackson himself, and Sauron's mouth. The biggest news, though, is that it also includes the final confrontation between Gandalf and Sarauman, a scene cut at the last minute from the theatrical release and the only thing Jackson did in the movies that set the Internet world a-whirring with "Worst. Decision. Ever" posts. While these are all quibbles about this most excellent flick and the cut probably necessary to help move the plot line, we would have gladly sacrificed several minutes of hobbits gazing longingly into each other's eyes for this one. You could dose Tom Cruise and Jaime Foxx with five hits of acid each and film it and still not come up with anything nearly as entertaining as Sir Ian and Christopher Lee going at it. You can also order the Return of the King Gift Set.

All we can say is that at least the DVD for I, Robot doesn't include a Will Smith video.

While SFist just re-uses the water bottles we get from the vending machine or corner store, over the last few years we've seen the rise of people who carry their water-bottle with them wherever they go. Some want a reusable product to reduce solid waste. Others do it for health reasons. Of course hikers and campers have been doing it for ages. And the water bottle of choice is made by an obscure lab-supplies firm known as Nalgene. And like everything you may like but is in fact part of a sinister plan, it's being boycotted.

Rocky Mountain Animal Defense first raised awareness of Nalgene's broad range of products including restraints, cages and forceps. SFist is perplexed - on the one hand, we want new medicines that are safe to use. On the other hand, bunnies are for petting, eating and posing for Scholastic posters, not stuffing in stainless steel cages and being injected with god knows what.
