Sad, isn't it?

    According to Muni spokesman Alan Siegel, "[t]he cable runs continuously (up and down the line), so we have to find the one section of the cable that's damaged ... we have to run (the cable) slowly until that section gets into the car barn." [via SFGate]

    But fear not, California Street cable car riders. Those wacky kids over at the transit agency will run buses on the California Street line to help you get home. Speaking of which, do any SF residents actually still use the cable cars to get to and from work or school or wherever? As opposed to riding them for that wistful Rice-A-Roni feel?

    Oh, and the other car lines are running just fine.

    Jezebel already saved us the trouble from making a horrifying, insensitive, racist, and un-Bay Area comment about never touching a black woman's hair. Ever. ("Condi Rice To Anti-War Protester: Never Mess With A Black Woman's Hair" -- read it while shaking your head, with a gentle sigh.)

    It seems CODEPINK, a female-based grassroots pro-peace (and judging by the photographs, anti-conditioner) movement, recently got all up in Condoleezza Rice's face at Capitol Hill today. This protester, sporting fake-blood smeared hands, got a little too close to Condi, shouting "war criminal!" in her face before she was pushed away and snapped up by the police. Four other CODEPINK protesters were arrested.

    We're not sure how she managed to get so near the diva, but well done, frayed-hair lady. Well done.

    Perhaps in the traumatic stage of denial, we forgot to bring you some old obit news. Vincent M. DeDomenico, who co-created Rice-A-Roni along with his brothers, died last Thursday at 92.

    We tasted the savory food product, but the pasta dish's jingle -- "...the San Francisco treat!" -- will live on as one of the most memorable San Francisco earworms of all time. And, of course, in all our hearts. RIP, dude.

    Ghuman is a British citizen born in India, and an Oxford and Berkeley graduate who's working on a book about the influence of India on English music. She was coming back from England in August 2006 through SFO with her fiance when she got called over by security, who then spent 8 hours questioning her. They ripped up her H-1B Visa (good through May 2008), seemed suspicious about her music tapes, questioned why she'd listed Welsh as a language she spoke, and described her as Hispanic in their notes. They also admitted they didn't really understand why she was on their watch list, but that in any event, she wasn't going to be allowed back to the US.

    After flying back to London, Ghuman checked in with the U.S. Embassy and was advised it was probably all a mistake, but they still haven't gotten her paperwork in order. Musicologists across the country and world are rallying to her cause, with people writing letters to avid amateur pianist Condi Rice to ask her to intercede and inviting her to speak at conferences outside the US.

    Meanwhile, Ghuman says she doesn't understand why she's considered a threat, saying, "It’s not only insulting and heartbreaking, but how? In what way? Musicians, dangerous people? Is it my piano playing?" Well, Elgar write -- the Enigma Variations. (And Pomp and Circumstance.)

    Andrea Froncillo and Jennifer Jeffrey teamed up last year to write stinky prose. (We'll re-use that pun as much as we please.) He is a chef/partner in a bunch of restaurants in the city, including the Stinking Rose and the Crab House, and she's a San Francisco-based freelance writer. We'll link to Andrea's blog too, but he hasn't updated it in a year. Slacker! We're especially frustrated since it's titled "Sex and the Kitchen," and we sincerely hope all the fluids are strictly accounted for in the Stinking Rose kitchen.

    They have re-upped for a new tome, Crab which will be released next week. Sex, kitchen, crab; it's almost logical. We have a fondness for crab, seeing as how it's as San Francisco as sourdough and Rice-A-Roni, so we had to shoot some questions at Jennifer and Andrea to know more. Their answers after the jump!

Later on this evening you have a serious wealth of options to see good music. Our dear friend Ashod Simonian is on the road with Stereo Total who play tonight at Bimbo's with The Octopus Project. Ashod's toured with many a great band and recently put out a book called Real Fun which features 100+ candid Polaroids of musicians on tour during their downtime, including Spoon, Death Cab, Jenny Lewis, Broken Social Scene and tons more plus a CD with tracks by Irving, Dios Malos and Norfolk & Western. Over at the Warfield, Rilo Kiley perform songs from their new one Under The Blacklight (which we don't think sounds at all like Fleetwood Mac, for the record) with Lewis' man-friend Jonathan Rice and Grand Ole Party. Cafe Du Nord's got the oddly-named pair of Joan As Police Woman plus Michael Zapruder's Rain of Frogs. Bottom of the Hill presents Sacramento's nostalgic Nintendo-music tribute band The Advantage with Them Hills and The Lovely Public. For some local music, you could see Thee More Shallows at Hemlock or Eats Tapes and Lemonade at Rickshaw Stop.

    According to le Hilton, Kathy Griffin is dating Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. (Yay! It's nice to see a redhead making good.)

    Is this true? Are they really spooning each other? We have no idea. But it'd be nice to see Griffin frolicking around the Castro again. Lord knows the strip needs something to keep it queer and interesting. (Assuming Wozniak lives in the Bay Area, that is, and not one of the massive estates or islands or planets he probably owns.)

    Also found on PH, writer and former Castro Street resident Anne Rice is a born-again Christian. According to her "Ave Maria"-scored site, she's also anti-abortion, endorses Hillary Clinton, and is "not sure...that Americans should give up the right to abortion." Dry-icy mysterious, that Rice.

    Anyway, huh. Who knew?

In what's becoming an annual tradition around there, staff member Todd McClamroch even got to fly with one of the participants. Chicagoist's decidedly opinionated readership was also appalled that one of their staffers found a popular local brewpub to be a great place to bring a kid. They also think that an unlikely activist for immigration rights should just take her medicine and offered their own suggestions to how the city should capitalize on the local music scene. And everyone thinks that a suggested tax on bottled water is a great idea.

    While LAist is prepares for Burning Man's 21st, they celebrated what would have been Charles Bukowski's 87th birthday. Hell, why not celebrate The Dude at Lebowski Fest. Or guys and girls dressed up as Oompa Loompas or sexy 1960's flight attendants playing beach volleyball in a tournament? But the true celebration for Los Angeles will come on the peaceful day when black and brown learn to get down.

    gavinandsophia.jpgThis week, SFist found (a presumably pre-AA) Mayor Gavin Newsom looking strikingly similar Sophia Loren. On the downside, the Tenderloin Housing Clinic forced its one-time ally and documentarian to foolishly take down his informative and helpful hallway cam. SFist cover boy Ed Jew came to the defense of local radio nut, Michael Savage; SFPD got cross with some skaters; and the left-hand-inflicted folk finally got their day.

    Londonist met some interesting characters this week. First, they spoke to a lady who collects stories about virginity loss. Another Londoner is renting herself out on dates to raise money for brain tumor research. And why was Bill Cinton wearing orange socks with a green tie?

    Bostonist welcomed Ron Jeremy to town, but his visit wasn't without incident. A drunk driver nearly took out the porn star's tour bus. Of course everyone wanted a picture with Ron Jeremy - and a cop might be in trouble for posing in uniform. If it's not porn, it'll be sports and politics on the front page. Mitt Romney was mixed in both when it was released that he and his wife have significant investment in YES, the TV network that televises all of the Evil Empire's games. Bostonist issued a warning about peeing on the toilet seat, as such action may have been the background that will send a woman to jail for first-degree murder. And Boston beat out all the other -ist cities in the survey that gave Boston the title of Bloggiest city.

    Over at DCist, the news that former Mayor Marion Barry and Michael Jackson have become friends was just too much for them to take, so they spent the rest of the week trying to get over it. While recovering, they wondered why movies set in D.C. never get it right, why Metro won't just outright direct people to stand to the right and walk to the left, why GQ Magazine could possibly think Condoleezza Rice is the most influential person in town, and what's up with that Samuel Gompers Monument.

    We found this photo in our inbox this morning. It may (or may not) be Condoleezza Rice. She's been in town for Bill Walsh's memorial service. As George tells us, after he snapped the shot at about 10:30 a.m. yesterday morning, "you could definitely smell the evil sycophant as she passed." Oh dear. Does that mean that she doesn't bathe properly? We hope not.

    The shoes and bag we can imagine her sporting, but even for her that dress seems a tad too boxy.

    Anyway, we thank you, George. Even if it isn't our dear Condi, we always enjoy seeing shots of the Stanford campus, where we can practically smell the AP 5 scores and trust funds emitting from our screen. Mmm, delicious.

    MMMmmmm, plate lunch: if you're eating starch, you may as well overeat starch. Rice+mac salad = divine. Throw a little huli-huli chicken on there, and you're gold.

    A public memorial is all set to honor Bill Walsh. It'll be held at Candlestick at 11 AM on August 10th and among the speakers will be Joe Montana and Eddie De Bartolo. A private ceremony will be held on August 9th at the Stanford Memorial Church. Speakers there will not only include Montana and DeBartolo, but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Dianne Feinstein. Rumored to attend are Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former Secretary of State George Shultz who were friends of the Genius. Current owners of the 49ers, John and Denise York have also asked that the Governor declare a Bill Walsh Day.

    The 49ers have also gotten permission to wear a decal honoring Walsh and a moment of silence will be held before the first exhibition game on August 13th.

    Fans have been trying to come up with other ways to honor the coach, including having the Niners wear throwback uniforms of the '81 team (the first team that won the Superbowl) as well as naming either Candlestick or Stanford Stadium "Bill Walsh Stadium." Those 1981 uniforms were pretty kick ass too.

    The Walsh family has asked that instead of sending flowers, donations be made in Walsh's name to a charity your choice.

    As we told you last week, the San Francisco Mime Troupe performed in Dolores Park for the public on the 4th and last weekend. It was the premiere of the group's show "Making a Killing," which lampoons the current administration. We dropped by the Sunday performance; the photo above is during a charming ditty where "Condi Rice" and "Dick Cheney" were arguing over who was more popular in the polls.

    They'll be taking the show all over the Bay Area and Northern California in the next few months; on Thursday it's at Mill Valley Community Center (6:30 p.m.), while Saturday and Sunday you can catch the show at Cedar Rose Park in Berkeley (go here for a full schedule)
