Spy - Everywhere

At first, I was extremely skeptical about this comedy starring Melissa McCarthy, mainly because I feared it would be full of humor centered around her weight and oh, ho ho, isn't it funny to see her do physical things! But I gotta say, the trailer actually made me laugh, ("You're crying now!" "I'M NOT!") and also, Jason Fucking Statham is in it. Enough said.

Entourage - Everywhere

So, do you think the negative reviews of this HBO series-to-movie will include comments about how old the actors look, and how they should all be acting their ages? HA HA HA HA. Of course not!

I gave up on the series about two seasons in because watching marginally attractive men have sex with an endless stream of insanely attractive women got...*yawn*, and the entertainment industry isn't nearly as interesting as the entertainment industry seems to think it is. And also, Jeremy Piven is the actor equivalent of chewing on tin foil. But go do you, my movie-going bros!

Comedy starring Cobie Smulders and Guy Pearce as two trainers at a Texas gym called Power 4 Life, and Kevin Corrigan as a rich shlub who seeks out their help in changing his life. If you've ever worked out at a gym, you know they can be hilarious places, so why aren't there more comedies set in them?

Recology (not to be confused with Vibeology, the study of the chemistry between you and me) rejoices as Proposition A goes down in flames, while Coit Tower's Proposition B wins. Let's see what went down:

Prop A, the garbage proposal, was rejected by 77 percent of city voters. The measure would have required Recology, San Francisco's waste services, to be "put up for competitive bidding. "We have the most successful system in the country and there's no reason to mess with it," chirped Jordan Curley, campaign manager for No on A.

Also, Coit Tower just got a little more boring for tourists and rich people who attend VIP parties. Prop B just barely passed last night, with unofficial results saying that 54 percent of city voters gave it the thumbs up. The measure places limits on food vendors, gift shops, and after-hour VIP parties. (Sorry, Zynga, you'll have to find another venue for a whisky-tini party!) Also, revenue accrued from the tower will be spent on preservation of the historic Depression-era murals. This comes on the heels of Mayor Ed Lee's announcement of adding a $1.7 million fund to repair Coit Tower two weeks ago. So, you know, those murals better sparkle and shine.

In other election news, Dianne Feinstein will (probably) continue to rule the land. Mark Leno still shines. Jackie Speier dazzles her audience. And Proposition 29, the cigarette tax, is still too close to call! But more on that later...

Here's how things went down last night after the returns came in. Shall we?

San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris wins. She'll get the Dem nod in the attorney general race. She creamed Silicon Valley executive Steve Kelly with much of the vote.

Gavin Newsom wins. The San Francisco Mayor beat out Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn. Newsom maintained a big lead throughout the night. He'll go up against incumbent Lt. Gov Abel Maldonado and "against Meg Whitman's credit card" in November.

Meg Whitman, who spent $71 million of her own money in this election, could very well be your next California Governor. She snatched the Republican gubernatorial nomination from Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner with ease. She'll face off with Jerry Brown for the golden throne in Sacramento.

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO and Tea Party sympathizer Carley Fiorina won the Republican U.S. Senate nomination. She'll face off against Barbara Boxer come November.

PG&E, who spent $46 million on an attempt to limit local governments to enter the electricity business, is sad this morning. Prop 16 was "narrowly" defeated.

Ravel, filed "a petition for a writ of mandate with the California Supreme Court to invalidate Proposition 8, an initiative constitutional amendment that intends to strip gay and lesbian citizens of their fundamental right to marry in California."

That is to say, it's on. In Herrera's own words:

The issue before the court today is of far greater consequence than marriage equality alone ... Equal protection of the laws is not merely the cornerstone of the California Constitution, it is what separates constitutional democracy from mob rule tyranny. If allowed to stand, Prop 8 so devastates the principle of equal protection that it endangers the fundamental rights of any potential electoral minority -- even for protected classes based on race, religion, national origin and gender. The proponents of Prop 8 waged a ruthless campaign of falsehood and fear, funded by millions of dollars from out-of-state interest groups. Make no mistake that their success in California has dramatically raised the stakes. What began as a struggle for marriage equality is today a fight for equality itself. I am confident that our high court will again demonstrate its principled independence in recognizing this danger, and in reasserting our constitution's promise of equality under the law.

Why? Well, one reason, according to BeyondChron's Paul Hogarth, might be that "[p]rogressives were lulled into complacency by early poll numbers, and distracted by the Barack Obama campaign." Hogarth goes on to say that "discrimination has been enshrined in our Constitution" as of this morning. (Read his thorough take on how it won, right here.)

Also, loads of money coming in from Utah helped the marriage ban win. If you recall, Mattymatt predicted that if it passed, "then a group of Utah Mormons will have seized control of the California Constitution, giving themselves the power to veto any California marriage they want." Which? Seems to be the case.

A jarring response to Mayor Gavin Newsom's issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in the San Francisco, Prop. 8 lost in every Bay Area city but Solano. Gay marriage bans also won last night in Florida and Arizona.

Update I: Prop. 8 officially passes. City Attorney Dennis Herrera plans on filing a lawsuit in the California Supreme Court.

Your hometown team players had a couple cameos and made a few notable contributions in the evening’s proceedings…

Tim Lincecum was <del>getting ruthlessly topped by Madonna</del> suffering from flu-like symptoms and could not play.

The first Giant or Athletic to enter the game was Oakland’s Justin Duchscherer, coming in to pitch the top of the sixth inning not until 10:14 p.m. EDT. He allowed a single to the Marlins’ Hanley Ramirez, prompting Tim McCarver to observe, “It’s pretty easy to say that was the worst pitch of the night.” Chase Utley singled and Lance Berkman sac-flied Ramirez home, putting the NL up 2-0 on Duchscherer’s watch. Duchschererererer did have one highlight moment, striking out Chipper Jones swinging at a high fastball.

NL save leader Brian Wilson of the Giants was used sparingly at the bottom of the eighth. Given with a 2-1 lead, he got Carlos Quentin to pop out and struck out Carlos Guillen. Two quality outs – and then they yank him for Billy Wagner, who promptly gives up the lead to the first batter he faces. Served!
