A semi-truck crashed into a utility pole on De Haro near 20th Street this morning, reports The San Francisco Examiner, knocking over the pole and cutting power to 11,000 residents in the process across the Mission and Potrero Hill.

In a photo taken by SFPD, it appears the bed of the truck came to a rest fully blocking De Haro Street. The police note that the street, between 20th and 19th, could be closed until tomorrow morning — depending on how long it takes PG&E to restore the damaged utilities.

Sidebar: This SFist editor was one of the many to lose power because of this, but it was restored as of 11:15 a.m.

Huge swaths of San Francisco found themselves without power Saturday, after two separate incidents — one caused by a transformer that exploded, the other caused by a raccoon — took out lines across the city.

At 7:45 a.m. Saturday, a PG&E transformer (the power-distribution variety, not a Robot in Disguise) exploded in Bernal Heights. Two men were injured in the blast, reports the SF Chronicle:

Robert Antonelli, 55, was at the window of his Heyman Avenue home about 7:45 a.m. talking to a friend, Manuel Cruz, 34, of Daly City, who was standing outside, when he heard what sounded like a firecracker’s wick sizzling.

“And the next thing, ka-boom,” Antonelli said. “It exploded like a bomb. It blew things off my shelf. I flew back into my bed. Debris flew back into my room.”

Antonelli said Cruz, who was standing next to the transformer, was knocked out, and both men were taken to San Francisco General Hospital. Antonelli said he was treated for light burns on his face and released, but Cruz was more seriously burned and remained hospitalized.

According to PG&E spokesman Matt Nauman, the blast was caused by "an equipment failure that occurred while a utility crew was at Wool Street and Eugenia Avenue, working to fix a power failure that began about 7:30 a.m."

“We will be conducting a full review into this incident to determine what caused the outtage and what caused the injuries," Nauman says.

About 4,000 lost power due to the explosion, and it took PG&E all day to get them back online, with 60 still without power as of 9 p.m., CBS5 reports.

Then, at 7:59 p.m. Saturday, 3,360 more households in the Inner Sunset and near Golden Gate Park lost power when, according to PG&E spokesperson J.D. Guidi, "a raccoon came in contact with power lines at 17th Avenue and Lawton Street."

Guidi told KRON4 that the raccoon "was found on top of a power line causing the outage." He didn't offer an update on the beast's condition, but we're all educated people and can probably hazard a pretty solid guess.

By 9:26, all customers who'd been left in the dark by the raccoon incident had their power restored, and all raccoons who'd been hoping to keep us in the dark so they could continue to attack us and our pets retreated to their lairs, intent on finding a new, better way to cause our demise.

Politician Barney Frank, Anderson Cooper, butch on-air personality Rachel Maddow, and American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert round out the top 5.

Other notable homosexuals making the list? The "internet's closet king," Matt Drudge; Gawker's Nick Denton; Andrew Sullivan; some dude involved with the Sex and the City franchise; ACLU's Anthony D. Romer; Marc Jacobs; loads of New York people you've never heard of before; and the sage who advised us to cut up debit/credit cards, Suze Orman.

Notable San Francisco/Bay Area gays making the list? No one. In a city famous for housing LGBT ilk from far and wide, we're surprised to see a glaring lack of SF representation (e.g., Sen. Mark Leno, Supe. Bevan Dufty, John Waters, Juanita More and Heklina) on the list. Which is odd. Or... is it? Are there any queer folk from SF that you think deserve attention on the print publication's fancy-homosexuals list?

We're getting reports of a power outage in San Francisco this morning. On readers comments "Just came from Lyon & Grove. Apparently the power is out in the neighborhood because a Muni bus struck a power pole."

And a tipster tells SFist, "Bus (21) headed inbound hit a power pole at baker. Power out for the last hour. A few blocks taped off. " We're also hearing that 2 to 3 blocks on Hayes are blocked off.

We'll update as soon as we know more.

Update 10:39: SF MTA spokesperson Kristen Holland tells SFist: "At 8:45 a.m., the pole of the power unit on top of a 21 Hayes trolley bus traveling inbound at Hayes and Baker snagged the overhead wire which caught a PG&E wire. Our scene cleared at 9:58 a.m."

Newsom Wants More Wind to Power SF

Setting himself up for countless "hot air" punchlines, Gavin Newsom "is calling for windmills throughout the city," reports <a href="http://www.kcbs.com/SF-Hotels-to-Benefit-From-Newsom-Wind-Power-Pla...

SF News

Gavin Newsom

Green

power

wind

Brock Keeling

Setting himself up for countless "hot air" punchlines, Gavin Newsom "is calling for windmills throughout the city," reports KCBS. An estimated 29 of them might pop up in SF sometime in the very near future. Or not. (Although he'd like to "streamline the permit process" to get them up ASAP.) Anyway, Newsom goes on to said that the wind turbines cold be put on historical landmarks. he also emotes, "wind is a rural or suburban phenomenon and not necessarily an urban phenomenon ... We believe wind needs to be part of the urban mix of renewables. Our goal is to have 50 megawatts of renewable energy being generated within the city and county of San Francisco over the next few decades."

Mylar Balloon Causes Castro Power Outage

Last night in San Francisco's notoriously gay Castro neighborhood, 2,8000 were rewarded with forgiving, soft candlelight after <a href="http://sfappeal.com/alley/2009/09/2800-castro-area-pge-customers...

SF News

castro

pg&e

power

power_outage

Brock Keeling

Last night in San Francisco's notoriously gay Castro neighborhood, 2,8000 were rewarded with forgiving, soft candlelight after a power outage hit the area for about an hour or so. The cause of the outage? A Mylar balloon. According to reports, "PG&E spokesman Andrew Souvall said the outage happened around 7:50 p.m. when a Mylar balloon hit electric wires." What's more, "[t]he incident caused a manhole cover to dislodge at Market Street and Duboce Avenue." [insert manhole/Castro joke here] Power was restored to the area around 9 p.m.

518,000 Lose Power Due to Storm, Countless Lose Patience Due to Muni Disruption

Since we're reportedly under the breeziness of "hurricane"-like winds, can we name the storm?
In addition to shutting down the Richmond Bridge, closing the ferries, screwing with the chi of (the) 101, and getting our demin damp, Mary-Kate has so far also caused over 518,000 residents in the Bay Area to lose power. Anyone else have any word of this supposed outage? Seeing as how this is one attractive and expensive strip of real estate, right at the nexus of two neighborhoods, this is of the utmost importance.

An SFister writes to us from the dark, telling us that 17th Street "has been without power for the past day and a half -- everything from Valencia to Dolores. No hot water either, or at least in my apartment. I did a quick scan of the news but don't see anything, which is weird considering it's only, like, one of the busiest <del>thorough fairs</del> thoroughfares in the friggin city." No hot water? Eeps! We're going to go ahead and blame teenagers for this one.

So...any reports of a PG&E-related powerlessness? A concentrated area of unbathed homosexuals, hipsters, or nouveau riche? Let us know!
