Holy second-hand smokes! An astounding five people were shot in San Francisco's Potrero Hill neighborhood last night. According to the Merc (via Bay City News), the fuzz found five people suffering from gunshot wounds over on the 800 block of Missouri Street, right next to the Potrero Hill Recreation Center. This happened at around 10:30 p.m.last night. Apparently, someone came up to the group and started shooting. Jesus. Anyway, all of the victims are expected......

Hey, did you know that most gunfire in SF (and everywhere else, we assume) goes unreported? It does. At least according to the Examiner, it doesn't. They report that ShotSpotter--that magic recording device that can pinpoint the locations of discharged gunfire in San Francisco's most at-risk neighborhoods--hears gunfire that city residents should be reporting. Via. Two men were shot and killed in SF on Saturday night. First, just outside the Japan center in Japantown......

Over in Potrero Hill, a 40-year-old man was shot to death while while driving a van, according to San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens. The crime happened around Turner Terrace. CBS 5 (via Bay City News) goes on to say that SFPD officers "found a lone occupant suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds...[he] had crashed into the dead end of the street." The medical examiner's office ID'd the male victim as Kelly McGee of Fairfield.......

Photo: Jim Herd At first, we thought this was a bunch of art students or gamesters when we saw people setting up cones and bowling balls on a steep hill. Sidewalk bowling? Appears to be an exercise class, with some people forced to run uphill while others do bowling ball pushups in a kind of urban basic training. Strange.......

It turns out that the man who was brutally gunned down in the Mission on Monday night recently ditched a witness protection program. Justin Lee, 40 - who was shot to death after being chased down on 26th and Mission Streets - just left the security of a safe house in another part of the state on the same day. Yikes. Going back a bit, it seems that in 2005 Lee had "taken the......

Hey, wouldn't it be neat if you could sign up for a weekly email newsletter that let you know when Muni closures would be happening? Well you CAN! If you're a member of the press. Towards the end of every week, Muni sends out an email to reporters about weekend traffic and transit disruptions. It's kind of like Muni's own little guide to what's happening around town, and what's fun to do if you......

For the two or three of you out there who might be driving through the Sunnyside this afternoon/evening, be sure to avoid the intersection of Congo and Mangels. It looks like this truck is going to be there for a while. Oops. This sort of reminds us of the beached limo incident in Potrero Hill, circa July 2007. UPDATE: The intersection is now clear. In a city as spectacularly hilly as San Francisco, 20th St. in Potrero Hill may well be the finest roller coaster ride on offer. Of course, the speed limit is only 25 mph (as it should be through a neighborhood), so you’ll have to resist the temptation to get on your bad motor scooter and go roaring up and down 20th’s undulations all Evel Knievel-style. Aside from Potrero’s most obvious geologic property – it’s a real tall hill! – what’s most striking is how self-contained it is. (All that’s missing is an old-timey single screen theater, and anyway, who wants the hassle of having to clean spilled soda and Junior Mints anymore?) It may lack the restaurants strung along 18th St. down the hill, but 20th St. between Missouri and Connecticut speaks to Potrero Hill’s autonomy as well as any block in this eminently pleasant neighborhood. ...

Hey, we're back from vacation! And we just missed the 5-foot sinkhole that opened up on California Street between 6th and 7th Avenues for New Year's Eve. Does anyone have pictures? In our second item of news on the city's west side, CHP and the SFPD shut down the Golden Gate Bridge to pedestrians to thwart Code Pink's peace march across the span, to commemorate the 3000th U.S. casualty in Iraq. There was a sewage spill on Ocean Beach last night. Wasn't Daniela Kirschenbaum just talking about this? A manhole cover blew out around 11 p.m., which allowed not only water but what we'll delicately call "SFSOS effluvia" to leak onto the beach. The affected area is about 150 feet of the beach, from the base of the Cliff House going west. There's a whooping cough outbreak at Palo Alto High -- one student managed to......

We get a lot of e-mails about various events for good causes and most of them we'll list in our events posts but some of them, the one's that look really fun, we'll do a big post on. This one is definately deserving of a big post-- Dine Around. The basic gist of which is that if you eat at a selected restaurants in the Castro, Noe Valley, Mission, Potrero Hill, and Soma-- in other words, prime eating areas-- Wednesday night, money will be raised for the Aids Emergency Fund (AEF) and the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund (BCEF). And there's some great restaurants listed too like Foreign Cinema and la Mediterranee and Firefly and, well, just check out the list yourself. A raffle will also be held to help raise money. How could this not be a great thing as for the most part, all you need to do to support something is eat. We like eating. ...

Everyone goes through phases where they think: am I nuts to think that I can afford to live in this city any longer? You spend so much for these teeny-weeny houses, the public schools are so tough to navigate, wouldn't it be nice to have a yard? When we were little we used to catch fireflies at night as it got dark. We'd put them into old mayonnaise jars with grass on the bottom and holes poked in the lid and watch them light up. Then, when it got dark enough we'd play tag with the other kids with flashlights in our yard. We'd forgotten about most of that until we had to prepare a birthday gift for our brother, and spent......

So maybe the folks back East were all over Fake Writer JT Leroy first, but San Francisco-based author and journalist Jack Boulware has a piece in Salon on Leroy creator Laura Albert (aka Laura Victoria) that looks at the person behind the persona while also painting a pretty vivid picture of what it was like to live in San Francisco in the 1990s. It feels like truly local coverage -- and SFist means that as......
