We don't usually read the Op Ed pages of the Chronicle, because it's always either rehashed columnists from other papers or something like "give birth control pills to deer in Point Reyes" -- but can you believe it? The Chron actually got someone local to write about a local issue today -- if we're going to build out the MUNI underground, why not actually build it out and have a subway that runs to Fisherman's Wharf?

--Killer squirrels on the attack! A menacing critter stomped into an open classroom in a South San Jose school and bit a first-grader on the finger and two adults in the classroom. They called 911, but when animal control arrived, the squirrel had fled -- or in their words, "He it outta there." Har! The school took pains to say that they don't usually have a problem with vicious rodents, unlike those other attack squirrels in the Mountain View park.

Pot growing in the wild! Marin County has vowed to crack down on marijuana growers who have been sneaking onto state and federal public property to plant over $100 million worth of weed. The pot is located on both sides of Bolinas Ridge, and Point Reyes National Seashore says they spent over $10,000 to clean it all up. Authorities report seeing one plant that was 10 feet tall and covered with so many buds the stalk ran parallel to the ground.

Less than an hour north of the City, a lonely wedge of land juts out into the teeth of the Pacific swell. Almost completely separated from the Marin mainland by the grinding force of the San Andreas Fault (SAF), the Point Reyes Peninsula is a focal point for all kinds of natural forces.

What an ambient summer week it's been and it's very likely to continue through the weekend. In fact, turkey wings crossed it will extend clear through the Thanksgiving weekend food coma. What do we owe this warm air, absence of damp Pacific winds and non-chilly evenings to? A giant high (pressure that is) holding court over the massive expanse of the Great Basin Desert (aka Nevada) which is pushing warm inland air over the western North American continent clear out into the Pacific Ocean. This high is expected to stay, getting reinforcement from a smaller high moving west from the Rockies.

Not everyone at SFist had Columbus Day off, but that did not stop us from taking advantage of a beautiful, cloud free Saturday to head up to Point Reyes National Seashore. Point Reyes is only an hour away, but plan on spending at least one full day - there is a lot of driving to do in the park if you want to see the spectacular views from the lighthouse and still get some hiking in.
