Somehow we've weathered
and witnessed a nation that isn't broken, but simply unfinished.

We, the successors of a country and a time
where a skinny Black girl descended from slaves
and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president
only to find herself reciting for one.

And yes, we are far from polished, far from pristine,
but that doesn't mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect.
We are striving to forge our union with purpose.
To compose a country committed to all cultures,
colors, characters and conditions of man.

And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us,
but what stands before us. We close the divide,
because we know to put our future first,
we must first put our differences aside.
We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another.
We seek harm to none and harmony for all.

Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true:
that even as we grieved, we grew;
that even as we hurt, we hoped;
that even as we tired, we tried;
that we'll forever be tied together victorious,
not because we will never again know defeat
but because we will never again sow division.

Scripture tells us to envision that 'everyone shall sit under their own vine
and fig tree and no one shall make them afraid.'
If we're to live up to our own time,
then victory won't lie in the blade
but in all the bridges we've made.

That is the promise to glade,
the hill we climb if only we dare it,
because being American
is more than a pride we inherit –
it's the past we step into and how we repair it.

We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation
rather than share it,
would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy.
And this effort very nearly succeeded.
But while democracy can be periodically delayed,
it can never be permanently defeated.

In this truth, in this faith we trust
for while we have our eyes on the future,
history has its eyes on us.
This is the era of just redemption
we feared at its inception.

We did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour,
but within it we found the power
to author a new chapter, to offer hope and laughter to ourselves.
So while once we asked 'how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe,'
now we assert: 'how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us?'

We will not march back to what was, but move to what shall be:
a country that is bruised but whole,
benevolent but bold, fierce and free.

We will not be turned around or interrupted
by intimidation because we know our inaction
and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation.

Our blunders become their burdens
but one thing is certain:
If we merge mercy with might, and might with right,
then love becomes our legacy in change,
our children’s birthright.

So let us leave behind a country better than the one we were left.
With every breath from my bronze-pounded chest,
we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one.
We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the west,
we will rise from the winds swept north,
east where our forefathers first realized revolution.
We will rise from the lake-rinsed cities of the midwestern states.
We will rise from the sun-baked South.
We will rebuild, reconcile, and recover in every known nook of our nation
and every corner called our country, our people diverse and beautiful will emerge battered and beautiful.

When day comes, we step out of the shade,
aflame and unafraid.
The new dawn blooms as we free it.
For there is always light if only we’re brave enough to see it,
if only we’re brave enough to be it.

Watch The Trailer For This Maya Angelou Documentary That Premieres Tonight On KQED

Tonight at 8 p.m. on KQED 9.

Arts & Entertainment

documentary

kqed

Maya Angelou

PBS

poetry

Caleb Pershan

A documentary that's been on the festival circuit but hasn't yet premiered to the general public, Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise might, as the New York Times points out, "seem redundant to those who’ve read her autobiographies, notably I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings."

Nevertheless, "the photographs and film footage here add another dimension to her stories, as do interviews with her son" and artists who worked with her, the Times goes on. In particular, documentary directors Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack, who began this portrait of Angelou before her death in 2014, linger on moments those less familiar with Angelou may have glossed over: Her acting, and yes, singing ability, for example.

The documentary about Angelou, "a redwood tree," as the quote goes, "with deep roots in American culture,” might have particular resonance with those of us in San Francisco, as some of those roots can be traced back to the ground here.

You can learn more about the film here from PBS. The film premiers with KQED on Channel 9 this evening at 8 p.m.

Finally, a little extra on Angelou's encounter with another, if vastly different, Bay Area-born poet.

In addition to winning loads of awards for her work, she was also an anti-war, civil right, and feminist activist.

The Poetry Foundation notes:

Through over fifty years of public introspection and examination of society and self, Adrienne Rich has chronicled her journey in poetry and prose. "I began as an American optimist," she commented in Credo of a Passionate Skeptic, "albeit a critical one, formed by our racial legacy and by the Vietnam War...I became an American Skeptic, not as to the long search for justice and dignity, which is part of all human history, but in the light of my nation's leading role in demoralizing and destabilizing that search, here at home and around the world. Perhaps just such a passionate skepticism, neither cynical nor nihilistic, is the ground for continuing."

She was also a fabulous lesbian.

Whenever the death of an esteemed poet blips on our radar, this line from Sweeney Todd's "A Little Priest" — wherein the two main characters bandy back and forth about which profession would make for the tastiest meat pie — pops into our head: "No, you see, the trouble with poet is how do you know it's deceased?"

We're probably misinterpreting Sondheim's gem of a line, but... it works here.

L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has inspired some of the greatest forms of entertainment over the last 100 years. Let's see, there's this bizarre yet mildly racist silent film version of the fantastic tale; the famous Judy Garland film that should be required viewing by all humans; The Wiz, a '70s "urban" musical version; and Wicked, a bombastic 2003 musical told from the Wicked Witch of the West's perspective.

And now we have another. Bucky Sinister's poem "The Gray Side of The Moon" smashes together San Francisco with The Wizard of Oz, highlighting urban grit, meth, gangs, guns ,Oz-ian urban legends, and more. It's kind of like The Wiz without the music, and we mean that in the greatest way possible.

Sinister read the poem at the Quiet Lightning reading series, which was published today over at The Rumpus.
by Amy Crocker

Did you know San Francisco had a Poet Laureate? You should. SFist has mentioned her before. Our Laureate, Diane DiPrima, is in charge of putting the spirit of our fair city into iambic pentameter (or free verse, sonnets, odes...it's up to her).

DiPrima was active in the beat generation and has written plays, memoirs and stories over her long career. She will give her inaugural address tonight at the Main Library at the Civic Center. The event begins at 5 p.m. and is free and open to the public. She was named to the post last spring by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

And in honor of this momentous occasion, we propose a haiku contest. Let's keep the subject matter to San Francisco. Will there be a prize for the best one posted below? Probably not, but hey, it's worth a shot. (We might have a BART ticket lying around SFist HQ somewhere. Or not.) Remember, the poems have only three lines, the first with five syllables, then seven, then five.

Here's our entry to get the party started:

Our city is swell
When you can see it, alas!
One point for the fog.

Do better in the comments.

SFist Tonight

Noir poetry, a fashion feud, and a last chance to see 'Where the Wild Things Are' on the big screen.

Arts & Entertainment

Fashion

poetry

readings

sfist_tonight

Jay Barmann

FASHION: The finals of "Fashion Feud," a local competition in the Project Runway style will be held tonight. Designers Julia Meeks, Gail B. Karyna McGlynn and Donna de la Perrière will do readings from their latest publications: McGlynn, from I Have to Go Back to 1994 and Kill a Girl, in which each poem is a crime scene with hidden clues, and de la Perrière from True Crime, in which even witnesses are not really
