Streetfilms created two great videos about this year's PARK(ing) Day in San Francisco (featured above) and New York. Streetsblog reports that on Friday in San Francisco, "upwards of 34 metered parking spots were transformed into temporary parks, on-street bike parking demonstrations, cafe seating and other public space reimaginings."

The video elaborates on the organizers' and participants' desire for more public spaces in the urban parts of city and poses the question, Is it really the city's responsibility to continue to accommodate the storage of cars over the well being of the community?

Restaurant owners in North Beach explained how in the 1950s, the streets were widened and sidewalks were narrowed. How nice would it be to go back to the pre-1950s and have more restaurants with outdoor seating again?

Good thing there was plenty of foliage to soak up the CO2 in many of the spots, many of which were spotted downtown and in the Mission. It was duly noted that San Francisco has plenty of green spaces when you seek them out, but it's definitely refreshing to see a small oasis here and there in the middle of such urban settings.

Park(ing) Day Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the annual Park(ing) Day, brought to you by Rebar, in which companies and individuals transform local, met...

Arts & Entertainment

Community

SF Events

green_spaces

parking_day

Leanne Maxwell

Tomorrow is the annual Park(ing) Day, brought to you by Rebar, in which companies and individuals transform local, metered parking spots into fun and creative green spaces for the day. Look for them on your way to work in the morning or on your lunch break, and the mobile PARKcycle will also be out and about. Check out SFist's gallery of last year's Park(ing) Day.
