The outlet also reports that 100 federalized California National Guard members arrived in Portland Saturday, and 100 were due Sunday. California Governor Gavin Newsom and Oregon Governor Tina Kotek are both filing lawsuits.

“The facts on the ground in Oregon haven’t changed,” Kotek said during a news conference, via AP. “There’s no need for military intervention in Oregon. The far left and far right both wrap around and touch each other back in the far-far ether on the issue of vaccination — conspiracy theories and pseudoscience don't descriminate, politically. But now, Florida's controversial surgeon general, Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo, is announcing that Florida plans to be the first state to end all vaccine mandates, full stop.

So, children won't need to get vaccinated for diseases we solved decades ago, like measles and polio, in order to go to school. And Florida's school system could, thus, become ground zero for outbreaks of these deadly diseases, all because of some cukoo crazy adults like Dr. Ladapo — who was also a very vocal enemy the COVID-19 vaccine.

"Who am I to tell you what your child should put in their body?” said Ladapo at a press conference Wednesday alongside Governor Ron DeSantis, per the New York Times. "Your body is a gift from God."

Ladapo, who was born in Nigeria, penned a book in 2022 — when the pandemic was not even really over — that has a forward by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., titled Transcend Fear: A Blueprint for Mindful Leadership in Public Health. In it, he argues that the majority of public health officials were driven too much by fear in making stay-at-home orders, and subsequently, vaccine mandates.

Ladapo has been widely criticized in the public health field for his stance on the COVID-19 vaccine. As far back as December 2023, in his role as Florida's surgeon general, he was calling for a total halt in the use of the mRNA-based vaccines, spreading fear that they could cause damage to human cells, cancer, and "chromosomal instability," none of which are supported by the medical community.

The call to end vaccine mandates completely in Florida seems aimed at aligning with RFK Jr., and perhaps inspiring other states to take this dangerous step.

Meanwhile, on the West Coast, the governors of California, Oregon, and Washington issued a joint statement Wednesday announcing a three-state "health alliance" that will issue its own vaccine information and guidance, which will inevitably contradict what will come out of the Centers for Disease Control and the FDA under Kennedy.

The move follows the mass resignation last week of high-ranking officials at the CDC, who say that Kennedy is uninterested in heeding scientific advice, and that they are thus unable to effectively do their jobs in service to the public.

Per the Times, the West Coast "health alliance" intends to "provide residents with scientific data about vaccine safety and efficacy, and to issue guidance on vaccines for respiratory illnesses like Covid and the flu, as well as an array of childhood immunizations."

The governors' joint statement, which you can find here, argues that the CDC has become "a political tool that increasingly peddles ideology instead of science, ideology that will lead to severe health consequences."

"Through this partnership, the three states will start coordinating health guidelines by aligning immunization recommendations informed by respected national medical organizations," the joint statement says. "This will allow residents to receive consistent, science-based recommendations they can rely on — regardless of shifting federal actions."

The polar-opposite actions by Florida and the three West Coast states portend a potential health crisis in the coming years, as we could see more outbreaks of measles, mumps, polio, and other diseases that have long been seen as erradicated in the US — all because of conspiracy theories, fed by the internet, that have now become a dominant force via RFK.

Florida already faced a measles outbreak in the Fort Lauderdale school system in 2024. Rather than recommend that children stay at home to avoid exposure, Dr. Ladapo said he was "deferring to parents or guardians to make decisions about school attendance."

Last week, thanks to RFK, the FDA went against CDC's earlier recommendations, limiting COVID vaccination eligibility to people age 65 and older, and those with documented health conditions — excluding those who might want the vaccine for any other reason, like they live with someone elderly or otherwise vulnerable.

Sane Republican lawmakers could of course do something about this slowly moving crisis, but the 52 senators who confirmed RFK to his post in February, and Ron DeSantis, apparently see their political futures tied to staying loyal to the vaccine crazies. Only Mitch McConnell, a childhood survivor of polio, joined Democrats in voted Nay when it came to confirming RFK.

Related: CDC Clarifies COVID Guidelines, Reverses RFK Jr.'s Broader Rollback Claims

Top image: Xerius Jackson, age 7, gets an MMR vaccine at a vaccine clinic put on by Lubbock Public Health Department on March 1, 2025 in Lubbock, Texas. As the New York Times reports, the City of Estacada issued a warning to its residents Thursday afternoon saying, "If you have not evacuated, you must do so now. At this point in time there will be no firefighters protecting the City if the fire happens to continue moving toward town."

The entire evacuation is affected as many as 200,000 people who were clogging highways and roads around Portland in the past 24 hours.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has declared a state of emergency, and the only thing working in firefighters' favor right now is that winds appeared to be calmer Friday than they were Thursday.

As the map below shows, three smaller fires, each of which erupted during high winds on Tuesday, have appeared closer to the city of Portland, and remain active.

via #Firemappers

The three fires burning in the Cascade Range and in Mount Hood National Forest are expected to join into a single fire, as The Oregonian reports. Currently the Riverside Fire has burned about 130,000 acres, while the Beachie Creek Fire stands at 182,000 acres, and the Lionshead Fire at 131,000 acres. The latter is listed as 5 percent contained, while the Beachie Creek Fire is uncontained, and so is the Riverside Fire.

One small town of about 500 people in Marion County, Gates, Oregon, is reportedly completely destroyed. And it remains unclear how many directions these uncontained fires may spread before the weekend is out.

Much as it is in the Bay Area, air quality in and around Portland was extremely unhealthy to hazardous on Friday.

But unlike the situation in San Francisco, these fires are getting uncomfortably close to population-dense areas. Suburbs of Portland that are less than ten miles south of the city limits, including Lake Oswego and Marylhurst, remained under Level 1 or "green" evacuation warnings as of Friday morning.

2. @clackamascounty is also updating a color-coded fire-evacuation map at https://t.co/nkx66IZIv4

You can enter your address to see the evacuation level in your area.

Pictured is a snapshot of the map as of 10:15 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11.#clackamaswildfires pic.twitter.com/TMWJmPB1fG
— Clackamas Sheriff (@ClackCoSheriff) September 11, 2020

The National Weather Service provided a satellite model showing how near-surface smoke should begin dispersing both in Northern California and in at least parts of Oregon late Friday into Saturday, thanks to incoming marine air and a westerly breeze.

Marine air begins to work inland over the next couple of days with a modest westerly breeze. With mass numbers of sea stars dead, the urchins proliferated, chomping their way through the kelp forests.”

As SFist reported on back in 2016, on the tail-end of the mass starfish die-off that began in 2013 (see the correlation?), these celestial cnidarians suffered a catastrophic blow to their population, leaving said episcopal-colored critters to run amok.

Expansive "urchin barrens" — swaths of stripped, naked seafloor that are carpeted only by these sea porcupines — have become common along the NorCal coastline, but they’re now showing up in Oregon's once luscious kelp forests.

Throwing it back to when I was a plankton! #meroplankton #throwbackthursday #stillcute pic.twitter.com/RYqDPPmgEA
— Purple Sea Urchin (@purpleseathing) December 6, 2013

And, in doing so, these overpopulated urchins are responsible for killing-off marine biodiversity and crippling fisheries. For example, species like California’s beloved red abalone currently number 96 percent less than they did a few years ago; conversely, the state's purple sea urchin population multiplied by six during that time. Each of these stats was released earlier this week by UC Davis.

In 2018, California had to close down its red abalone fisheries, responsible for an estimated $44 million in “coastal economy” per year, due to the population decline. Oregon followed suit in a similar fashion, suspending permits to some 300 abalone drivers for the next three years, in order to give the remaining red abalone a chance to breed and repopulate, sans commercial harvesting.

“That’s a huge economic loss for our small coastal communities,” said Cynthia Catton, a research associate with the UC Davis Bodega Marine Lab, told the AP. “In California, there were 30,000 to 40,000 participants in [the abalone] fishery every year for decades, and for the first time ever that fishery had to close.”

The solution to this oceanic catastrophe? Well, it’s by no means a one-size-fits-all approach. Researchers believe that, even under the most ideal culling scenarios, it could take upwards of 20 years to clear 100 million pounds of overpopulated purple sea urchins – from just a single reef, no less. Extrapolate that figure out further, and it’s a hellish scenario that offers little in the way of hope.

However, “urchin farming” – physically removing large numbers of purple sea urchins from these kelp forest to be “fattened up” in controlled environments for human consumption (uni), in lieu of traditional red sea urchin row – in tandem with legal urchin hunting and bolstering populations of natural predators (starfish, stingray, sea otters, horn and leopard sharks) offers some semblance of ecological success.

For more information on how you can help support ocean conservation, visit montereybayaquarium.org/conservation-and-science to learn how even the smallest positive impact can ripple out for generations to come.

Related: Starfish Return In Huge Numbers On California Coast After Mass Die-Off

Image: Flickr via brewbooks

Video: A Slumber Party With Sloths

At the Zoological Wildlife Conservation Center and the Sloth Captive Husbandry Center in Rainier, Oregon, "sleepovers" are being offered for animal lovers who want to hang out with adorable sloths for...

Arts & Entertainment

animals

Oregon

zoo

Jay Barmann

At the Zoological Wildlife Conservation Center and the Sloth Captive Husbandry Center in Rainier, Oregon, "sleepovers" are being offered for animal lovers who want to hang out with adorable sloths for a night — which is the time of day when these slow, tree-hanging creatures are most active.

ABC 7 picked up the story about the sleepovers, which don't come cheap: it's $1200 for a group of four people, and $300 for each additional person. You get to feed the sloths while hanging out in double-occupancy tenants and talking only in "library voices," and it's not like you're necessarily going to do a ton of sleeping since you may be getting to feed the sloths up to eight times.

On their website the center stresses that these are meant to be educational experiences, not entertainment, and that they are not a zoo. But proceeds from programs like the sleepovers go to help the center's mission, which they claim is to learn sloth husbandry practices for better conservation of the endangered animals as their habitats are destroyed.

Also, sort of frighteningly, the center promises a "bonus" (for as long as Federal Regulations will allow) "brief interactive 'Mystery Creature' intro encounter prior to departure (subject to species change and cancellation without notice)."

Eek.

A reputable sloth conservation organization, meanwhile, is calling attention to the fact that all may not be as it seems at this Portland-area sloth husbandry outfit.

The Sloth Conservation Foundation has looked into the organization, and they have several major concerns. First of all, where are they getting the sloths and why are they bringing them to Oregon? "Oregon seems like a strange place for a sloth ‘sanctuary,’" they write. "Sloths are only found in the rainforests of Central and South America and... the center claims that they work with logging companies in South America and offer an alternative home for the displaced animals. However, there is a glaring problem with that story. If a patch of forest is indeed being cleared, the resident sloths should simply be relocated to a nearby forest reserve. There is absolutely no need, nor excuse, for adult, wild sloths to be exported to the U.S. for any reason."

Secondly, they say this supposed research center "has published a grand total of zero scientific research papers... Despite having maintained hundreds of sloths in captivity for almost 30 years for 'research purposes.'"

Something to consider when considering their insistence that they are not a zoo.

I don't think you're ready for this jelly.

A truck full of live eels being shipped to Korea "for consumption" flipped on Highway 101 in Oregon, spilling eels all over everything everywhere.

According to ABC7, a flatbed truck carrying live 'slime eels' — a.k.a. hagfish — was involved in a rollover crash at milepost 131 between Otter Rock and Depoe Bay. The very-much-alive eels left a trail of slime all over 101 and the unfortunate cars that happened to be within the vicinity of the horror.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium calls the hagfish "the creepiest creature in the aquarium" and here is why:

The eels are not actually eels, but fish. The OCA explains their grossness thusly:

This creature’s primary defense mechanism is to emit a protein that makes the surrounding water turn into a gelatinous slime. They then tie themselves into a knot, sliding the slime off their scaleless skin in the process, making them difficult to capture. Hagfish are so adept at producing this reaction that researchers have observed potential predators dying of suffocation while trapped in their slime.

Now imagine this all over your Accord.

Depoe Bay Fire District Facebook.

It looks like all of the hagfish were killed in the crash and swept to the side of the road with hoses and bulldozers.

Ammon Bundy and six of his followers have been acquitted of conspiracy charges by a federal court jury. Reuters reports that Bundy and the others, who are all members of a group that seized federal property in a 41-day occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, successfully argued that theirs was an act of civil disobedience. Bundy's brother, Ryan Bundy, was also a co-defendant in the trial. Prosecutors, meanwhile, maintained that it was a lawless seizure and an anti-government attack.

The group was charged with conspiring to impede federal employees through intimidation, threat, or force. Per the Oregonian, the jury, whose members had deliberated anew today after one juror was replaced, told the judge that they had "exhausted all discussion" and that although they could not reach a consensus on one charge, "further deliberation would not help." Eventually the jurors found the defendants not guilty on all charges.

"We are just so excited,” Angie Bundy, Ryan Bundy's wife, told the Guardian following the verdict. “We’ve been praying hard, and we knew they hadn’t done anything wrong.”

Although the lack of consequences for the armed militiamen will come as a surprise and even an affront to many, it should be recalled that the standoff was not without casualties. Robert "LaVoy" Finicum, a rancher who acted as the spokesperson for the militia, was killed during a confrontation with government officials in late January. As Vice News and Reuters wrote at the time, the FBI released unedited footage of Finicum's fatal shooting.

Porta-potties always present a surprise of some kind, usually disgusting and terrible ones. But weirdly, in Rogue River, Oregon, the surprise was a shitton of pot plants. The AP reports that local police officers seized the portable can filled with cannabis after a man came across it in a park. It's the largest seizure their department has ever made.

Posting the find to Facebook, the department wrote that "A man walking his dog through Anna Classick Park this morning just before 9am, stopped to use the Porta-Potty next to the tennis courts... and found this. Got marijuana? We Do!" Helpful citizens are already chiming in, noting that the weed doesn't look particularly mature and could have been discarded, with one good Samaritan writing that she specializes "in weed eradication and i can help make it disappear as a service to the community."

Rogue River PD via Facebook

My theory? This was a grow gone bad, and in discarding some of the plants, the growers chose a porta-potty because it could mask the smell, at least for a moment?

Or maybe somebody just stowed them there for safe keeping and was just on his way to pick them up?

Perhaps it's just a word to the wise: Leave no remote Porta-Potty unopened.

Anti-government protestors armed with guns have taken over a federal building in an Oregon wildlife refuge, because they say federal officials have unfairly punished ranchers.

The Oregonian reports an estimated 300 people marched through the town of Burns, Oregon to protest the impending imprisonment of two area ranchers, Dwight and Steven Hammond. According to the L.A. Times, the Hammonds (a father and son pair) were convicted of arson for fires they set in 2001 and 2006, which they said were to reduce the growth of invasive plants and protect their land from wildfires.

But the protestors, including Ammon Bundy (the son of Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher who staged an armed standoff against the Bureau of Land Management in 2014) say that the ranchers land rights are being stomped on by #biggovernment.

Following Saturday's march, a smaller group headed to the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters about 60 miles away, which they then took over. Militia members claimed there were about 100 of them occupying the refuge.

Ammon Bundy, the group's <strike>outspoken whackjob</strike> unofficial fearless leader told CNN that the wildlife refuge, which is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, "has been destructive to the people of the county and to the people of the area."

"The facility has been the tool to do all the tyranny that has been placed upon the Hammonds," Bundy told the Oregonian. "We're planning on staying here for years, absolutely. This is not a decision we've made at the last minute."

Bundy had a lot of choice words, which you can watch for yourself in this video he posted to his Facebook page:

A statement from the Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward warned people to stay away from the refuge:

After the peaceful rally was completed today, a group of outside militants drove to the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, where they seized and occupied the refuge headquarters. A collective effort from multiple agencies is currently working on a solution. For the time being please stay away from that area. More information will be provided as it becomes available. Please maintain a peaceful and united front and allow us to work through this situation.

"We're not used to this kind of thing here," Burns resident Kainan Jordan told KTVZ. "It's sort of frightening when there are people making threats and people toting guns."

Arguing that President Obama rushed to politicize last week's mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, Oregonian gun enthusiasts greeted Obama's arrival in Roseburg this morning by protesting with handguns in hand. No joke.

The President came to Roseburg today to meet privately with the families of the victims of the shooting. As Talking Points Memo reports, charmingly, some of the protesters even brought "Go Back to Kenya" signs. Stay classy, Oregon.

A Facebook event titled "Defend Roseburg - Deny barack 0bama" garnered 8,500 attendees. The text of the event says, in part, "If you choose to carry a firearm that is your right. Be safe, be responsible. We suggest that you carry a handgun as opposed to a rifle, but again, you have the right to carry what you wish." Jesus Christ.

Umpqua alumna and Roseburg native Michelle Finn told The Oregonian, "My family, my friends, everybody down here is not happy about him coming. He already says he's going to politicize this — he's already going to push his agenda."

Last week's shooting at the hands of a 26-year-old man with Asperger's syndrome claimed the lives of nine people.

As the New York Times reported this week, the shooting and Obama's subsequent response to it has brought out a a lot of pro-gun talk in Oregon. "In some ways," they write, "the rampage at the college by a 26-year-old student, Christopher Harper-Mercer, has actually tightened the embrace of guns in a rural town where shots at rifle ranges echo off the hills and hunters shoot deer and elk through the fall."

We know that California's drought is doing all sorts of horrible things to our state, drying us to a Mad Max-like crisp and burning us to ash. And for the second year in a row, it's also fucking up Halloween, by hitting home-grown pumpkins with a horrible shrink ray.

CBS5 reports that the dry weather has caused area pumpkins to ripen early and whither on the vine. As you might recall, the same thing happened last year, as the Bay Area was hit with "a shortage of medium- and large-format pumpkins."

This yeah, however, at least one pumpkin purveyor has figured out a way around the shortage: Ordering gourds from out of state.

John Moore, who owns pumpkin farms in San Ramon and Castro Valley, says farmers in Silverton, Oregon "just sent him photos of big orange pumpkins with healthy stems ready to be loaded up and driven to his farms in the next couple of days," CBS5 reports.

Sorry, Oregon. First, we came for your houses. Then it was your coffee. Now, your pumpkins. What's next, your beards? Your Mason jars?

The gunman who killed nine in a mass shooting at an Oregon community college killed himself as officers arrived, according to officials.

"The medical examiner has determined the cause of death of the shooter to be suicide," Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin told reporters at a press conference on Saturday, according to NBC News. Hanlin added that the investigation was ongoing, and that authorities had recovered an additional handgun from the home of Chris Harper Mercer, bringing the total to 14 guns owned by the gunman that authorities have seized.

On Thursday morning, the 26-year-old Mercer opened fire in a class that he was enrolled in at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. In the end, Mercer killed nine people, identified by officials as Lucero Alcaraz, 19; Quinn Glen Cooper, 18; Kim Saltmarsh Dietz, 59; Lucas Eibel, 18; Jason Dale Johnson, 33; Lawrence Levine, 67; Sarena Dawn Moore, 44; Treven Taylor Anspach, 20; and Rebecka Ann Carnes, 18. An additional 9 people were wounded.

At the press conference today, officials say officers arrived six minutes after the first 911 call, and responding officers exchanged fire with Mercer two minutes after they arrived. Two minutes later, Mercer was said to be down.

Officials also revealed that a "manifesto" was uncovered at the scene and left as a message to law enforcement, according to the AP, but did not say what the document contained. A source told NBC News that Mercer wrote that he "felt the world was against him" and that his actions would allow him to be "welcomed in Hell and embraced by the devil." Initial reports said Mercer specifically targeted Christians in his attack, but the mother of one of the wounded victims, say the gunman only asked if his victims were religious, without specifying Christianity.

Oregon Gunman Described As Shy, Unfriendly, Empathized With Virginia Shooter Vester Flanagan

He has been identified as 26-year-old Chris Harper-Mercer, and already reporters have been swarming around his two most recent residences in Winchester, Oregon and Torrance, California getting quotes ...

SF News

chris harper mercer

crime

mass shooting

Oregon

school shooting

Vester Lee Flanagan

Jay Barmann

The deceased gunman in yesterday's devastating mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon has been identified as 26-year-old Chris Harper-Mercer, and already reporters have been swarming around his two most recent residences in Winchester, Oregon and Torrance, California getting quotes from neighbors, none of whom seemed to know him well. Most, like those who spoke to the New York Times, describe him as reclusive and extremely close with his mother, with whom he lived in small apartments in both places. Some report barely ever seeing him, or occasionally seeing him wearing military gear (white t-shirt, shaved head, combat boots) coming back from a gun range with gun cases, along with his mom.

A dormant profile on a dating website depicts him as a conservative and introvert, a teetotaler, and a tongue-in-cheek fan of zombie fiction who hated organized religion. He described himself as "shy at first, but [I] warm up quickly, better in small groups."

The Los Angeles Times reports that authorities have obtained some of Mercer's writings that show him to be "a hate-filled individual with anti-government and conspiracy tendencies" who "was supportive of the white supremacist agenda and opposed organized religion." He also expressed sympathy for the Irish Republican Army.

According to witnesses in the classroom where the shooting began on Thursday morning, Harper-Mercer was targeting Christians. He ordered everyone who was Christian to stand up, and as KTLA reports, he allegedly said, "Good, because you're a Christian, you're going to see God in just about one second."

Ten people are reportedly dead, and another seven wounded from the shooting, though the SF Chronicle and others have the death toll at nine.

Former neighbors in Torrance recalled multiple instances in which Harper-Mercer's mother would complain about noise, both from children and dogs, saying that it bothered her son. At one point, circulating a petition to get the landlord to deal with a cockroach problem, a neighbor remembers her saying, "My son is dealing with some mental issues, and the roaches are really irritating him."

A more recent neighbor in Oregon described him as angry and confrontational, yelling at her for smoking on her balcony. "He yelled at us, me and my husband,” she said. “He was not a friendly type of guy. He did not want anything to do with anyone."

Multiple weapons were reportedly found in the Winchester apartment where he and his mother lived. She has so far not spoken with the media, however Harper-Mercer's father and stepsister spoke briefly with reporters Thursday night, with his father — who may be Irish — saying he was just "shocked." His stepsister said he was a person who "no matter if he was sad or mad he would always try to cheer up everybody."

Online, Harper-Mercer may have been responsible for the 4Chan conversation below in which he warned, "Don't go to school tomorrow if you're in the northwest."

And, disturbingly, online blog posts and downloads suggest that Harper-Mercer had recently watched a documentary about the school shooting at Sandy Hook, in Newtown, Connecticut, and he'd expressed admiration and sympathy for Vester Flanagan, the man who gunned down two former colleagues in Virginia in August.

In a blog post dated August 31, Harper-Mercer wrote, "And I have to say, anyone who knew him could have seen this coming. People like him have nothing left to live for, and the only thing left to do is lash out at a society that has abandoned them... On an interesting note, I have noticed that so many people like him are all alone and unknown, yet when they spill a little blood, the whole world knows who they are. A man who was known by no one, is now known by everyone."

There are reports in the last hour of a mass shooting with multiple possibility fatalities at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. A single gunman was reported as "down" as of 11 a.m. A local Fox affiliate and CNN are reporting that 10 people are dead and "more than 20 others" are injured.

The shooting apparently occurred around 10:38 a.m. Thursday, which is when the first 911 calls arrived.

Another news station, KATU, says that Oregon State Police are confirming 15 fatalities, but the tally could go higher. It remains unclear if the shooter has been detained, or if he is deceased.

Roseburg is about 70 miles south of Eugene, and 180 miles south of Portland.

As NBC News reports, the college is home to 3,300 full-time students and 16,000 part-time students.

Sadly, so far this year, there have been 12 mass shootings nationwide in which more than five people were killed, the largest being a biker brawl in Waco, Texas in May in which 9 were killed and 18 others wounded. According to Mass Shooting Tracker, this Oregon shooting would be the 294th of the year to date (counting all shootings of four or more regardless of fatalities), and it appears to be the deadliest.

Update: Local station KOIN has the first images from the scene.

Update 2: The Oregonian is giving live updates, and there's a report of six critically wounded victims still being medivaced from the college.

Update 3: As of 1 p.m. PT, news station KATU is putting the death toll at 7 to 10. The Eugene Register-Guard puts the toll at 13, and reports, "Multiple witnesses at the scene said the shooting [was] isolated to one classroom: a writing and speech class in Snyder Hall."

CNN is reporting that the shooting suspect, a male in his 20s, may have been on social media Wednesday night discussing the shooting, and "appears to have had a conversation with others online about his intentions."

Update 4: CNN reports that the shooter is, in fact, dead, and it sounds as though he was shot by officers arriving on the scene. Contrary to the earlier report about one classroom, victims were found in multiple classrooms, and the shooter moved from one building to a science building before this was over.

Update 5: The New York Times is confirming that there were nine fatalities, seven people wounded. And the shooter has been ID'd as 26-year-old Chris Mercer.

Brittany Maynard, 29-Year-Old Planning Assisted Suicide, Makes It To The Grand Canyon

Unfortunately, though, her symptoms are worsening.
A non-profit group, Compassion & Choices, that is trying to bring assisted suicide laws to more states has been helping Murphy document her choice, and her last days.

Murphy was living in San Francisco when she was diagnosed, after months of debilitating headaches and seizures. She has decided to end her life on November 1, two days after her husband's birthday, and as she said in the video released several weeks ago, she was hoping to make it to the Grand Canyon with her husband and family. And she did.

But, as she writes on the Brittany Fund site, her symptoms worsened while she was on the trip.

The Canyon was breathtakingly beautiful, and I was able to enjoy my time with the two things I love most: my family and nature.

Sadly, it is impossible to forget my cancer. Severe headaches and neck pain are never far away, and unfortunately the next morning I had my worst seizure thus far. My speech was paralyzed for quite a while after I regained consciousness, and the feeling of fatigue continued for the rest of the day.

Also, she says of the online campaign and video, "I didn't launch this campaign because I wanted attention; in fact, it's hard for me to process it all. I did this because I want to see a world where everyone has access to death with dignity, as I have had. My journey is easier because of this choice."
