We got there right when the doors opened and went straight up the stairs toward the complimentary Blowfish Sushi, which we loaded onto our cocktail napkin that soon became soggy with wasabi and soy sauce. (We gave all but two of these rolls to our spouse who was working the merch table all night.) We helped out at the table for a while, but we unfortunately couldn't stay for the bands.

Thursday: We were at Cafe Du Nord, where the line-up was The Dodos, Or, the Whale, Bodies of Water, and Willow Willow, a fun, sexy night of '70s-esque rockin'/folkin' guy/girl harmonies. The crowd was really nice, and three out of the four bands were too. Most of them had their own people watching their merch, and we were happy to handle their stuff here and there, in between selling the Noise Pop stuff. One band just assumed we would watch their stuff for the entire night, which was especially stressful when their merch started selling like hotcakes toward the end of the show. Not a please or thank you was uttered. but we don't think they were even aware of their rudeness, for what it's worth. LESSON: Bands, take your merch seriously, especially when lots of people want to buy it.

Friday: We took a break from volunteering and attended the Mountain Goats show at Bimbo's, accompanied by Jeffrey Lewis & the Jitters, Okay, and Aim Low Kid (disclosure: they're fronted by our spouse). It was another stellar night with a really happy crowd and happy and talented bands. We were thrilled to see the Mountain Goats live, and we are now even more enamored with John Darnielle. Behind his awkward storyteller persona, he is a charismatic and top-notch entertainer, and his drummer and bass player amazed us as well.

*FILM: The 5th Annual San Francisco Irish Film Festival kicks things off with by director Lenny Abrahamson and writer Mark O’Halloran. This is followed by a reception with the Consul General of Ireland, Emer Deane. According to LS, "other highlights include Speed Dating, a romantic comedy about a lovelorn amnesiac; the award winning Irish-language feature film Kings, and finally The Undertaking, a documentary about Irish American undertaker and poet Thomas Lynch, who is famed as the inspiration for hit HBO series Six Feet Under. Thomas Lynch and film director Cathal Black will be at the screening for a Q &A. Plus, the ever popular, Magners n’ Shorts Program (Magners Irish Cider is served for free during the film program) and Irish TV Night will also return to this year’s festival." <mtinclude blog_id="24" module="Corolla: Crest"> </mtinclude>

LECTURE: Yeah, yeah, you can go listen to Greil Marcus prattle on endlessly about the Magnetic Fields and the outback, or whatever, later this month at teh JCCSF. Or better yet, you can hear Family Ties creator Gary Goldberg talk about what it was like working with Michale J. Fox (his second choice to play Alex P. Keaton), Stephen Spielberg (who Goldberg tried to talk out of doing E.T.), on the set of Spin City, and more. He speaks tonight at the Jewish Community center of San Francisco. (Also, according to IMDB, he doesn't own a computer. The hell?)

DANCE: While the members of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater probably can't bust out "Turkey Lurkey Time" to save their lives, they're still not half bad. Check out the famed dance troupe across the bridge over UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall.

- The first ordinance would require promoters to obtain a permit before holding two or more events per calendar year, thus enabling the Police Department and other regulator agencies to know who is directly responsible for an event and hold them accountable for a security plan and any violations of health or safety rules.

- The second ordinance amends existing law to tighten the permitting process, and grants emergency powers to the Director of Entertainment Commission to suspend permits for a variety of safety and noise violations.

Both bands are from Oakland, though technically Don Miggs just moved South. It's a hard choice, but we're off to Red Devil Lounge. It looks like MiGGs got a record deal and are working on some new stuff. There'll be a new single and video in March.

Basia Bulat, a Canadian pop music singer/songwriter will be headlining at The Bottom of the Hill on Saturday night. "Oh My Darling," her first full-length album, was released earlier this month on Rough Trade Records. You can watch the video to "In the Night" here. We have a feeling that she's gonna be the "Feist of 2008." Grupo Fantasma, the finest and funkiest latin orchestra to come out of the United States in the last decade is playing at Slim's. They were just featured as NPR's "Song of the Day" and Prince is apparently in-love; how sweet.

The real excitement this weekend is at Great American Music Hall where St. Vincent (seen below) and Foreign Born are playing. Foreign Born (die-hard Obama fans) have been working on "shit tons of new material" which will land in stores fall 2008. Hopefully, they will play some new material. St. Vincent, (aka Annie Clark, along with her full band) is known for her work with Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens. New York Times called her recent release "an extravagant collection of songs..." We just can't get enough.

Just some random scribbling on a game that is still reverberating through our hungover, overstuffed brains....

-One of our pet peeves in any sort of sports movies/TV show is that no matter how realistic the movie/TV show is, every game shown features a crazy upset that climaxes with a crazy, totally unrealistic play. It’s true of the otherwise seriously realistic "Friday Night Lights." But that game? That game actually was like how it was in the movies. A crazy upset...a crazy finale...and that totally insanely crazy play in which Eli Manning somehow eluded every Patriot defender and half the Pats bench to throw that hopeless quacking duck of a pass that David Tyree somehow, inexplicably caught off of somebody's helmet.

And that's why we watch sports.

The other great thing about the game is that if the Pats had won, the game would have merely been remembered as the final victory of the Best. Team Ever. But with the upset, the game will now be seen as maybe one the biggest, greatest, most super stupendously games ever. Crushing defeats by supposed juggernauts will do that. Plus, anything that wipes the smirk off of Belichik's and Brady's face is worth it. Not to mention the smirk of every douchey frat-boy who discovered a deep love of the Red Sox just over the past three years. Hell, even every damn smug Boston sports fan. As Nelson Muntz would say "ha-ha!"

SFist Tonight

Arts & Entertainment

Barbara Stanwyck

beer

Castro Theatre

City

dj

Inner Mission

Night

Noir City

Outer Mission

San Francisco

Still Flyin

the Castro

The Castro Theatre

Theatre

tonight

Trivia

trivia night

Yellow Fever

Brock Keeling

Is it some sort of conspiracy in which Clear Channel makes it so you won't be able to switch to another station because they’re all doing commercials too? If you were a radio station, wouldn't it make sense to stay on when every other radio does commercials just to lure all the people who flip through channels?

Blazers 109 Warriors 91- So much for all that good mojo gained from the Spurs victory. Playing against one of the hottest teams in the league (Jesus, just think how good the Blazers would be with Oden), the Warriors didn't do much of anything. As the saying goes, or should go, as Davis does so does the Warriors and Davis only scored four points. The Warriors have now lost three out of four, all against Western Conference foes.

-There has been one local franchise that’s been quiet lately so we checked in to see what was happening with the Giants and discovered that well…umm…uh….nothing is going on. Is Sabes on vacation?

-We started watching "Friday Night Lights" over the weekend and we have to say it's a great show. However, the show touches on one of our huge sports movie/tv show pet peeves in that every game features an unbelievable rally consisting of completely unbelievable plays. We hate when that happens and it’s particularly jarring on "FNL" because the show is so realistic in almost every aspect. It's like watching "the Wire" (and yes, we're obsessed about it lately) and having every scene involving the Major Crime Units going after Marlo or Stringer Bell feature a car chase and gun shoot out through downtown Baltimore.

Cry of the Fishmonger: Captain Overboard

We apologize for the scant hockey writing lately, but this Fishmonger has been stuck in the Bermuda Triangle that lurks in the background of San Jose's logo, on a futile quest to find <a href="http://...

misc

Bermuda Triangle

Craig Rivet

hockey

Joe Thornton

Milan Michalek

NHL

Night

Patrick Marleau

San Jose

San Jose Sharks

sharks

The Sharks

Jon

It all started so positively, with Joe Thornton, Milan Michalek, Craig Rivet, and Marleau signing contract extensions, and the team eager to rectify their playoff collapse the previous spring. The team has played maddeningly inconsistent since then, though they have a good record, and currently sit atop the Pacific division standings. Much of Sharks fans frustration with this team springs from their atrocious home record this year, where they are 7-9-4 (or, to translate, where they have only won 7 of 20 games). On the road,
however, the Sharks are one of the top teams in the league, with a record of 16-3-2. That's why we can say that this team is "maddeningly inconsistent" while sporting a winning record and being in first place in their division.

Why call out Patty Marleau for the team's failings? Firstly, well, he's the captain, and therefore he, fairly or not, takes on the sins of the entire team. Secondly, he has, to put a fine point on it, sucked this season. At home. On the road. Night games, day games, games played on days that end in "y." Statistically, he's flirting with career lows in goals, points, plus/minus, and shooting percentage, and he's playing his tenth year in the NHL. His disinterested and distracted demeanor on the ice sure hasn't helped make the fans forget his lack of offensive production.

SFist Tonight

-- Unsilent Night: New York-based composer Phil Kline’s holiday concert creates "an outdoor ambient...

misc

Bay Area

Cafe du Nord

Castro Theatre

CDs

Christmas

Dolores Park

Du Nord

SF Events

holiday

music

New York

Night

people

Phil Kline

R&B

Randy Jones

San Francisco

Theatre

tonight

Unsilent Night

veronica klaus

Village People

Brock Keeling

-- Unsilent Night: New York-based composer Phil Kline’s holiday concert creates "an outdoor ambient music piece for an infinite number of boomboxes.
