Spotted somewhere out in the wilds of Wyoming, this Muni 9x-San Bruno is probably a ways off on the NextBus prediction.

As one Redditor points out, the bus was likely making the trek to San Francisco from the New Flyer factory in Manitoba.

Ever wonder where in the name of all that's holy all the buses in SF are? Sure, you've got reliable prediction times, but something about waiting for a bus on an abandoned, windswept corner makes us doubt even the most reliable Next Bus times. Enter this handy tool called the SF Live Bus Map.

Using the NextBus API, which serves prediction times for your upcoming ride, developers have created a city-wide bird's eye map view of all the buses in SF as they go about their business. Just in time for 4/20, the SF Live Bus Map is strangely hypnotic, begging to be stared at with glazed, bloodshot eyes. Watching the buses, which stall and scurry across the screen like amoebas in a petri dish, is an oddly soothing reminder that yes, there are buses somewhere in the city ... just not necessarily where and when you want them.

The most useful application of this map may be to track your ride, but we like it as the visual equivalent of background noise: it's pleasant, soothing and the cute bus icons delude us into feeling as if we have a modicum of control over our public transportation options.

Richmond Station police captain Sharon Ferrigno, describes the crime in the neighborhood newsletter. Just before noon last Thursday, the victim was walking on Geary Boulevard near 19th Avenue, when he stopped to look at the NextBus time in a bus shelter.

He noticed the suspect in the area but paid no attention to him. The victim then continued walking when the suspect approached him and yelled, “What are you doing?” “Why did you stop to look at the bus stop and not wait for the time to show up?” Then without warning, the suspect kicked the victim in the leg then punched him in the eye, causing it to bleed. The suspect continued to push the victim around as the victim asked other pedestrians to call the police.

Ferrigno hasn't mentioned whether the suspect was believed to be under the influence of any substances at the time. (No one is saying he was on bath salts, but you know... what if it is bath salts? When do we launch into full-on bath salts terror mode?) The suspect did, however, commit another unprovoked assault across Golden Gate Park on Irving Street at 22nd Ave two days earlier. He was charged with aggravated assault.

Apparently, yes; it is. So yesterday evening, we watched as perplexed bus riders stood at shelters and stared at the bus signs, waiting for them to reveal their secrets; but none were forthcoming. A simple "call 311 for arrival times" would have been enough.

So why didn't Muni communicate this information to riders? We don't know. Surely it is not due to incompetence, poor internal communication, or low standards for customer service. Because Muni does not suffer from any of those problems.

Did somebody at 511.org just accidentally their website? According to an alert, you can now real-time Muni train information. Hey, that's!

But that's not all! They also want you to please ignore, test, test, test, and test one. These transit alerts certainly are valuable!

We think that what they're trying to say is that NextBus data is now available when you call 511. We just tried calling and they seemed to be using NextBus info, rather than Muni's completely fictitious pre-determined schedules. Way to communicate, 511!

Google Relieves Your Muni Frustrations

There's something new on your Google Map: Muni! Le sigh.

Two features that Google Transit doesn't have: route overlays, so you can see what lines are close to you; and NextBus data. The trip planning is all based on schedules; and as we know, Muni has a very casual relationship with timeliness. But interestingly, according to Muni, that's not their fault -- it's Google's. Google Transit uses a very specific framework for transit data, and they don't support real-time vehicle tracking or route overlays.

But this is still a great way to figure out how to get from here to there -- for example, just type "haight and stanyan to el rio taqueria" in a regular old Google search, and ta-da! You're just a 40-minute ride away from meeting up with your friends (versus 13 if you had a car). Now, remind us again why we're still paying millions of dollars in bridge tolls for 511.org's awful trip planner?

Coming Soon to Subways: An End to FAIL!

Hey, you know those awful flatscreen maps in the subways? Of course, they'll still be located down by the track, rather than at the entrance to the station -- a security precaution, according to a Muni spokesman. Muni was apparently concerned that the expensive flatscreens would suffer vandalism, which sounds like a reasonable fear to us. (For example, we've seen how nicely our property is treated when it's in Hunters Point.)

If you're standing outside the subway, trying to decide whether to wait or walk, Muni recommends calling 311 to find out when the next train is coming (not to be confused with the useless 511, which still doesn't understand NextBus). But what about putting scrolling LED signs up near the subway entrances? They've got those hanging in bus stops all over the city, and they seem pretty vandal-resistant (except when they're not). Well, Muni says they might "consider various options." When our parents told us that, it usually meant "I'm busy enough already, kid" -- so we're guessing that having arrival times near the entrance is too much to hope for in the near future.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About BART (but You Aren't Allowed to Know About Muni)

As usual, Google's come up with a way to make everyone's lives easier.
