We're sad to report that your chances to get "five years of good lovin' and pornstar sex" just got worse. Hank III (a bona fide grammar enthusiast), the grandson of Hank Williams, Sr. and the son of Hank Williams Jr, has canceled his opening act for Reverend Horton Heat tonight at the Fillmore. You can get a full refund at point of purchase, but if you weren't going to check out Hank III's package, don't despair, Reverent Horton Heat and Nashville Pussy are still performing. Thank God that rockabilly still lives on. (Actually, why didn't they just cancel the whole thing - seems like a better plan.)

If you are that hard-up, it seems that you can just fly to Nashville and get some rock-star love. Sorry guys, he's just into girls, though reportedly, he's into ménage à trois, but just with the ladies though. It's sick what you can learn on MySpace these days.

We're sure his Grandpa would be proud.

We just screened the 70-minute flick today, and we were happy to discover that the documentary's main character, Larry Pierce (NSFW), lives just about an hour or so away from our home town, Indianapolis. (We hope he might be performing in the area when we're home for Christmas.) Pierce is a very endearing small-town, family man who loves performing his bawdy tunes for friends in his garage, while selling his tapes and CDs at truck stops and local record stores.

During the filming, Pierce was forced into early retirement after 30 years at his company, and his future seemed pretty bleak. But it turns out that in addition to being a favorite among truckers, Pierce has been considered a cult-classic among his peers. He now tours with bawdy-rock band -Itis and was featured on Howard Stern in January (he'll also be back on again next Wednesday, Nov. 14), and according to his MySpace page (NSFW), his next gig will be in New York City this month. Right on, Larry!

In Dirty Country, you'll also meet other awesome bawdy performers: Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts (the original party band), John Valby (our personal fave), and Blowfly, aka Clarence Reed, who's been providing quality dirty rap since 1960 (ok, they're all our faves).

Our last gig in Paris at La Maroquinerie in April 2007. The place was packed with 400 fans who knew all the words and clapped and danced and yelled out to us and made us feel incredibly good. We played really well with in our fancy embroidered suits and we came off stage sweaty as barnyard pigs.

Best venue in the world?
I hate to be such a Francophile, but la Cigale in Paris. It's a huge, old, red-velvet theater and truly a lovely place to share and experience live music.

Best fans in the world?
The best fan we've met so far is a young girl from Houston named Gelli. We just met her last week. She wore our band t-shirt at the show, danced in the front row the whole time, beamed bright smiles at us, and gave us hope for the future of the human race.

What's your favorite song to perform?
Right now it's 'Saltbreakers'. I love it when the guys come in -- who doesn't love a rousing chorus of bearded men? Also, I crank the reverb on the amp and dance around with my guitar.

Favorite collaborators?
My bandmates -- Tucker Martine, Karl Blau and Steve Moore. also the wonderful world-class violist Eyvind Kang. and the Cedar Hill Baptist choir from Nashville that sang on 'To the Country' from the new record.

Lamest Crowd Request ever
When we played to two people in Dallas a few years back and both were from our record label. It's not that the label people were lame -- they were really nice -- but that was certainly the lamest attendance ever.

The hockey commentariat all think the Sharks-Wings series is going to be a good one, and most think the Sharks will win in 6 or 7 games. The Wings are dealing with injuries to Tomas Holmstrom, their tough, net-crashing shot-tipper, and D-man Frank Lebda, who was sucker- punched by Daymond Langkow in round 1, and is suffering from post- concussion symptoms. The Sharks are, miraculously, injury-free right now, although Jonathan Cheechoo isn't 100% after the knee-injury from Game 1 of the Nashville series.

Even Game 2, the Predators 5-2 win, was not decided until late in the 3rd period. Nashville's undisciplined play (they led all playoff teams with almost 30 minutes of penalties per game) was their undoing, even though the Sharks power play was more or less ineffective, and often frankly ugly to watch. But it was one more way to wear down the Nashville defenders, and keep their skill players on the bench. Patrick Marleau again scored some big goals, and Joe Thornton took the first step toward erasing his playoff-choker reputation with dominating play and 6 points in the series.

Nashville wasn't the only team to distinguish itself with dirty play in this year's playoffs. The Calgary Flames managed to steal the spotlight by having their backup goalie come in to play lumberjack to the Detroit Red Wings Johan Franzen's, umm, old growth redwood late in Game 5 of their series (Franzen, fittingly, scored the series winner in Game 6). Then the Flames' Jarome Iginla and Daymond Langkow got in the act late in the game (cross-checking plus slashing and sucker-punching, respectively). Classy. Brad May of the Anaheim Ducks got a 3 game suspension for sucker-punching the back of Minnesota Wild defenseman Kim Johnsson (who is both emphatically not a pugilist, and happened to be Minnesota's best D man), which then caused a multi-player dust-up between the Ducks and Wild during the *pre-game skate* of Game 5 in their series.

Their trade-deadline deal for Peter Forsberg added yet another scoring forward to a line-up that includes Paul Kariya, diminutive speedster Scott Sullivan, J.P. Dumont, David Legwand, and Martin Erat. Their D is mobile and skilled, led by the hilariously named Kimmo Timonen (just say it out loud without smiling, we dare you), Marek Zidlicky (ditto), and Shea Webber (2 out of 3 ain't bad).
In goal, Tomas Vokoun had another excellent year, and his "backup", Chris Mason, is their 2nd
Why? Because the San Jose Sharks are now up 2-0 against the Edmonton Oilers in the second round of the playoffs, after winning last night 2-1. The Sharks, who have won six playoff games in a row, won on a game winning goal by MVP candidate Joe Thorton (check out the great video of it from a fan in the stands). Then there's how they did it, winning last night's game despite, incredibly, being down two players in a 5-3 matchup, only to have two of those players lose their sticks, and still-- somehow, inexplicably-- kept the Oilers from scoring for over a minute. That's studly. Even better is the fact that in describing the whole thing, Sharks coach Ron Wilson referenced the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. How can you not give some props to a Monty Python quoting coach?

There was a time when we were actually pretty into hockey, a left over effect of having grown up in Flyers-mad Philadelphia. But somewhere along the line, right around the point we started seeing highlights of a Columbus/Nashville game, we stopped really caring that much. We would, however, get a little interested again around playoff hockey because playoff hockey is a whole other beast entirely, hockey at it's purest and with an intensity that ranks right up there with the Big Three sports, (check out this YouTube video of the Sharks' entrance in Game 4 of the series against the Predators to check out the intensity-- it's right out of a rock conert, a Ronnie James Dio rock concert). Actually, one could even say that playoff hockey has even more intensity than the other sports. In hockey, for instance, a star player would never quit trying half-way through a 7th game to sulk because they know that they will probably be pummeled to death their teammates.

This season, we started to pay mild attention to the Sharks only to see them spend most of the season in a funk, mired in the bottom end of their division. But then they traded for Joe Thorton in one of the best trades the Bay Area has ever seen and the team took off, finishing off as the hottest team in the NHL. So now we're back into it, following along with the team and even checking them out on TV (that is if we could find the OLN network). We're even more into it because this series has been a real humdinger and because the Shark's are winning the way hockey is supposed to be played, old time hockey-like, with much hitting and checking and do-or-die intensity.

In other words, Go Sharks.
The women's game has been nipping at the heels of the cultural consciousness for about ten years now, but hasn't quite grabbed the meaty flesh of its full attention.

This gives the women's tourney something the men's tournament doesn't have -- potential. As yet undiscovered by mainstream America, the women's tournament has scalability, while the men's tourney has been doomed to shark jumpage ever since ESPN lost the contract to broadcast the opening rounds back in the 90s.

A friendly crowd greeted Filipino-American filmmaker Steven Mallorca at the San Francisco screening of his labor of love, for the Asian-American Film Fest -- about three rows of seats were reserved for his family and friends, various members of the film's crew, and other people affiliated with the movie, and the rest of the seats rapidly sold out with people interested in small indie comedy film, Filipino country music aficionados, and people eagerly waiting outside in the suddenly-cold weather in the rush line. (Can't SFIAAFF let them wait someplace a little warmer?)

Slow Jam King was written, directed, and produced by Mallorca (and exec produced by John Woo), and Mallorca also wrote almost all the songs on the soundtrack too. Dang, a quadruple threat! The movie's main focus is a young depressed Filipino-American named JoJo, the former salutatorian of his high school who's dropped out of college for the aspirational hiphopper pimp lifestyle, in an attempt to win the heart of a Filipina girl in the neighborhood who's already dating the neighborhood gangbanger. That gangbanger then gives JoJo a hot gun, at which point JoJo carjacks Vance, a country-music-loving perfume salesman from Tennessee, and ropes his African-American friend DeVaun into a road trip to Nashville.

Take a trip to the Durty South, after the jump.
