'Citywide Operation Safe Muni' Results in <s>900</s> 400 Citations, 9 Arrests

SFist brought you this news yesterday, but somewhere around "100 police officers, Muni inspectors and sheriff's officials were involved in Citywide Operation Safe Muni," conducted between 1 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. CBS 5 reports that citations were issued for fare evasion, not having a pass or transfer, and eating/drinking on public transit.

Beware: Undercover Muni Cops Checking Fares Today

SFist just received the following bit of information, one you Muni freeloaders should read. A reader, who we'll keep anonymous, tells us that there are "[u]ndercover pigs checking for fares around the city... hundreds of them today."

Interspecies Muni Line

This is amazing. Someone must have dropped some fast food wrappers or chicken bones on that bus or something, or as Jim Herd suspects, the drivers feed them. (Yeah, we know this photo has been posted all over the place today, but who can resist?!)

Newsom Wants to Remove Cars, Muni from Market Street

Though not a new idea, its sanity level, or lack thereof, remains the same: permanently removing vehicles and Muni lines from Market Street. This is the latest idea tinkering around inside Newsom's sleek head.

Muni Bus Brawl Prompts Race Relations Chat

Putting aside the fact that the ladies, if you will, involved in the infamous Muni bus fight lacked moral character, tact or basic human decency, community leaders hosted a panel discussion and media roundtable today "to reduce tensions between the city's Asian and African American communities." The discussion was sparked over the videotaped Muni fight that captured the internet's attention a few weeks ago.

Muni Riders Have No Manners But BART Riders Do?

We just came across this amusing post via The Muni Diaries' counterpart in commute-blogging, The BART Diaries. Apparently this blogger *really* hates Muni, and here are her highly generalized observations as to how Muni riders have fewer manners than BART riders. She has seen/heard Muni riders:

Muni Bus Bought

Last week, we brought your attention to the sale of this 1984 articulated 60-ft MAN bus, once used by Muni to carry passengers around the city back in the day. With a vehicle of such girth and length and reputation, we assumed no one would bid on the monstrosity.

Via B.K.: "Just witnessed on 21: young teen girl snatches something outa the hands of a lady and runs off the bus. The lady, screaming, runs after the girl. This never happens, but we all see the little thief run right into 3 SWAT team looking cops who were standing around drinking coffee (no donuts). They have her on the ground in a sec. What did she steal? The lady's iPhone. Overhear guy saying his friend steals about two a day & that purses are so 1990's. All victims sit close to the door. So obviously, the lesson is, if you're gonna use your iPhone on the bus, carry a gun too =)"

Via K.M.: "The N Judah driver hit a Cintas Truck in front of UCSF this morning and just kept on driving."

Due to extensive flooding, Muni temporarily shutdown subway service at 4:15 p.m.

1 in 10 of Muni Riders Practice Fare Evasion

With an estimated 700,000 boardings per day, 1 out of 10 Muni riders jump aboard without paying. (For shame! Two dollars is a bargain for this kind of entertainment.) According to a report by SF Chron, "[f]are evasion on Muni occurs most frequently in the afternoon and at night ... Among the lines where the problem is most prevalent are the 9-San Bruno, 14-Mission, 38-Geary and 47-Van Ness."

Dead Body Found On 5-Fulton

On Friday night, a dead body was found on a 5-Fulton Muni bus. The body has been identified as Christopher Feasel of San Francisco. As the corpse showed no signs of trauma, investigators are still trying to determine the caused of death. (Our guess is the excruciating wait for an elusive 5-Fulton bus did him in.) According to police Sgt. Lyn Tomioka, "Workers discovered Feasel around midnight Friday at the bus yard at Presidio Avenue and Bush Street," but the bus was parked at around 6:30 pm that night.

President Obama's Thursday Visit Prompts Muni Rerouting

Forget the Nobel Prize. Screw having your own pencil sharpener in the Oval Office. Real power comes from your mere presence being able to alter Muni's schedule. And that's just what President Barack Obama has done. When he visits San Francisco tomorrow, Muni reroutes will go into effect.

NextBus Blows A Fuse

Although Muni is (understandably) having major delays today due to the rain, NextBus, it seems, is also out-of-order. On the worst possible day, too. Ugh.

SFist Interviews: Guy Who Filmed Infamous Muni Fight

Ever since lasts week's Muni bus brawl went "viral" -- a term MSM adores using repeatedly; speaking of which, a few news anchors have been using the term "cat fight" to describe the female fight, which, really? -- the clip has scored, as of Monday morning, well over a half million views. The video is disgusting yet enthralling.

Actor Brutally Beaten On Muni

Earlier this week, according to SF Chron, 18-year-old Christopher Borgzinner, an actor who plays a "thug" in the up coming film La Mission , was brutally beaten while riding the 9-San Bruno to acting class. It seems Borgzinner was mugged and attacked because he was wearing the wrong kind of shoes.

"Just another day on Muni... fuc**ng Muni," relents the cameraman shooting this video of a fight between two women on a Chinatown Muni bus. (The 30 line, if we have to guess.)

Smoking At Bus Stops

This man us standing close enough to the bus stop that everyone -- including some kids -- cam smell him. If he reeked of garbage or beets, it would be considered rude, and he'd be embarrassed to know that everyone is edging away so they don't have to breathe him in. Smokers? Not so much.

Via Kevin McCracken: "The Muni driver just got done lecturing commuters on the virtues of saying thank you." (We say thank you if the driver is nice, but we would refrain from thanking this particular driver out of principle. -- SFist)

Adam Jackson shot the above video that shows scores and scores of youthful types heading to Saturday's SF LovEvolution/Love Parade bash at Civic Center. We don't know how they crammed their lithe bodies into that train; in fact, we don't want to know. We just thank the Lord we weren't on this inbound train at Civic Center. Shudder.

Newsom Slams Local Blog For Creating "False Controversy"

The sweet scriubes over at Streetsblog posted a might fine article on how San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, allegedly, "has been quietly pressuring MTA Chief Nat Ford to delay or prevent proposals to extend parking meter hours on weeknights and Sundays, despite a looming mid-year MTA budget deficit and studies that show it's good policy."

SFPD Sketch of Suspect Who Stabbed Boy on Muni Released

SFPD has released a sketch of the man suspected of stabbing 11-year-old Hatim Mansori a couple of weeks ago on Muni in an unprovoked attack. Here's the description again:

Man Found Along the J-Church Line Dies

This morning, a 58-year-old man died "after being found between a curb and San Francisco Municipal Railway light-rail tracks" at Church Street at 22nd Street a little after 9 a.m. This resulted in police activity slowing down service. But, according to SF Appeal, none one yet knows how, exactly, he died. While the cause of death has yet to be determined, and police are still trying to figure that out, Appeal received an unconfirmed tip, saying, "'I just got a call from REDACTED saying that the J church incident involved a dude dying because they got hit by the J line...possibly between the inbound and outbound cars...'" Heavy. We'll update you as soon as we know more. Oh, and service has since been restored to normal operation.

11-Year-Old Muni Stabbing Victim in Good Condition, Attacker Still on the Loose

Hatim Mansori, the young boy who was stabbed on Muni last week is now in good condition, but is still unable to keep solid foods down. He's also afraid to leave the hospital because his assailant is still on the loose, much in part thanks to Muni's surveillance cameras being broken at the time.

Cable Car Crashs Into Van, Injures Four

A cable car collided with a van near Washington Street near Mason Street last night, injuring four. According to SF Appeal, "The crash happened at about 5:15 p.m." And "two passengers were taken to local hospitals and two others were treated at the scene." Yikes. None of the injuries, thankfully, were life-threatening.

Union Street NIMBYs Win

Cow Hollow merchants are rejoicing after crushing Muni's new terminal bus idea. If you recall, Muni wanted to "establish a 291 feet long Bus Terminus at Union & Fillmore." But after merchants threw a temper-tantrum, culled in thousands of signatures, made lots of frowny faces, Muni Executive Director Nathaniel Ford relented. "[T]he two sides agreed to a compromise — the articulated buses would only run from 5 to 9 a.m. on Union Street and the terminal idea at Union and Fillmore streets would be temporarily abandoned," chirps The Examiner. Union Street NIMBYs Lose Marbles Over Muni Bus Proposal

A Muni proposal is underway to "establish a 291 feet long Bus Terminus at Union & Fillmore," which we think it a might fine idea. Improvements to public transportation like this should be a top priority. But merchants in the Cow Hollow are up in arms. Why? Because they lack clarity. Proving to be as inane as Geary merchants (who, time after time, fail to see the bigger picture, resulting in years of curably crippled traffic) and Valencia business owners (elitists of the very worst kind), Union Street businesses worry that the "bendy" buses will ruin their precious gem of a neighborhood. The NIMBY's harrowing press release on the subject, which can be found in its entirety at SFCitizen, is a regular hoot.

L Taraval Collides With Automobile

(Good grief, San Francisco. You're really making up for last week's glaring lack of BART strike with a busy morning, aren't you? First the fire, now this.) This afternoon, according to Appeal, an L Taraval smacked into a vehicle at a little after noontime today. "L Taraval Muni Metro service has been disrupted after the L hit a car at Taraval and 34th Ave.," they report. The male driver of the vehicle was "transported to San Francisco General Hospital with unknown injuries" Muni guru Judson True reveals. Expect a joyous ride on a shuttle bus until the L gets back on track. Update: The L is back and better than ever! Not really, but it's running again.

Cyclist Hits M Ocean View

A little after 10:30 a.m. today, a male cyclist "early to mid-twenties" collided with the M Ocean View at Arch and Randolph, temporarily disrupting service. According to SF Appeal, "the bicyclist was traveling southbound (downhill) on Arch Street and struck the right side of the train as it headed inbound (westbound) on Randolph Street through the intersection." No word yet who failed to observe the stop sign. The cyclist was whisked to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated for serious injuries. We hope his recovery is a speedy one.

Graffiti Report Card: Muni Taggers Gone Wild Part II

Hmmm. Well. It's a bit messy. Obviously, the work of many contributors with no one cohesive statement. But, out of the blue, the shock of sunny red gibberish, amongst so much gibberish, somehow ties it all together.
