A pod of orcas has been seen off the coast of Monterey Bay, way far south of where the whales normally travel. Scientists are guessing that the "collapse" in the chinook salmon population is responsible. Normally, these whales from the Puget Sound, never need travel south of the Columbia River, which empties on the border between Washington and Oregon. Since this is the sixth year the whales have been seen off of Monterey, the current salmon problem is looking more and more like a crisis. If Free Willy had enough to eat up in the Puget Sound, he wouldn't have to make such a long journey.

Just in time for the kiddies as they go back to school, the Monterey Bay Aquarium (or the Sausalito Aquarium for you Trekkies out there and yes, that's our second Star Trek IV reference this week), unveiled their latest catch, a real live Great White Shark. The Shark is 104 pounds and 5 feet 8 inches long and is on the younger side of life. It was caught somewhere off the Santa Monica Bay and was introduced to the Aquarium’s "Outer Bay" exhibit where it roams freely and wonders where all the yummy surfers went.
In the interest of full disclosure, SFist Ted, our new weatherman, also happens to be Dogster Ted. And while we've harshed on the Webby Awards only just recently, we're still proud. You can register to vote for them to win the "People's Choice Award" in their category, "Community" -- and as Ted points out, they don't seem to be too picky in letting you use as many emails as you like to register again and again (not that the stringent ethical guidelines at SFist would allow us to do that).
