A group of people who say they are Stanford students blocked westbound traffic on the San Mateo Bridge beginning just before 5 p.m.

Citing television footage, the Chronicle says police officers have made arrests after the students, some carrying banners and a Palestinian flag, made their stand. Protesters reportedly said they hoped to shut traffic down for 28 minutes, which it sounds like they didn't do. There were several minor accidents as cars came to a halt.

68 were arrested, with the CHP issuing the following statement: “The CHP would like to remind the public that our freeway system is no place for protests. Motorists do not expect pedestrians to be present in lanes of traffic, and such actions could lead to collisions between those pedestrians and the vehicles on the freeway. Unfortunately, collisions involving pedestrians often end with major injuries or fatalities. We thank those that were affected by this incident for their patience and cooperation.”

BikeNOPA has some wound-relieving wounds for cyclists who bumble their way through Golden Gate Park on a daily basis. The long stretch of Golden Gate Park will receive a much-needed repaving in time for Spring.

BikeNOPA reports:

At long last repaving is coming to the south side streets of Golden Gate Park, primarily to Martin Luther King Drive. While a repaved western section of JFK Drive has delighted bicyclists, motorists, and pedestrians since last spring on the north side of the city's premiere park, MLK has posed a dodge-and-swerve guantlet to travelers for years. Body-rattling and sometimes jaw-dropping craters have plagued the long stretch between the Great Highway and Kezar Drive. Even the Recreation and Parks Commission's Capital Committee referred to the "treacherous eastern section of MLK Drive" in a memo last month to General Manager Philip Ginzburg.

In addition to repaving MLK, which will grace the area between Kezar Drive and 19th Avenue, the face lift will include adding new curb ramps, re-striping of crosswalk, and more. Work will begin at the start of Spring.

2008 Martin Luther King Day Labor Breakfast in San Francisco

23rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Labor and Community Breakfast this morning at the San Francisco Hilton

misc

Community

jackie speier

Jim Herd

Jr

labor

Martin Luther

Martin Luther King

MLK

San Francisco

The Village

Jim
