Giants 8 Marlins 7- Again, we have no statistics to back us up, but it seems like Giants team after Giants team goes down to that humid, plastic, empty stadium in Miami and dies. We can’t remember a good series the Giants had down there. But finally, the worst Giants team of the past fifteen (twenty?) years appears to have gotten one over the Fish by taking a four game series. About four years too late if you ask us. Hell, ten years too late. Anyways, a real live pennant race is coming to the Phonebooth tonight as the Giants play host to the Cubs who are involved in that threeway race for the NL Central crown. You can't be any sort of baseball fan and not by psyched by the prospect of a pennant race between the Cubs, Cards, and the Milwaukee Brewers. And as we kind of like the Cubs being loveable losers and hate Tony LaRussa, we're hoping the Giants continue with their winning ways and help the rumblin', stumblin' Brew Crew out.

A's 6 Jays 4- Your A's hero of the game? Slammin' Jack Hannahan who hit his first home run ever in the third, a three run jobber. Hannahan is yet one more in the A's continuing season-long saga of "Who the Hell Are These Guys?" Beane's made a bunch of big, sort of splashy signings over the past few years (Mike Piazza anyone) yet the guys who've been doing it for the A's are guys we're not even sure Beane thought would do much. Athletic's Nation sums it up best, calling this A's team "the Misfits." And, hey, those Misfits are now just two games away from .500.
We Repeat, Paris Hilton is Coming">
Yes, it’s true, the lovely and talented Ms. Hilton herself will be in town tomorrow as she signs autographs to promote her new perfume, Heiress. Yes, Heiress, the perfume for people who want nothing more out of life than fall back-ass into money and the people who wish they were (after watching Zoolander for the umpteenth time last night, we’re a little surprised it’s not called "Derelict") The signing will be at Macy's in Union Square tomorrow around twelve noon. We're so excited we're schvitzing right now.

Oh, the questions....

Will she go out afterwards and drunkenly hook up with a Getty? Will she get busted for doing a line of coke in the Balboa Café women’s room right before saying nasty things about Lindsey Lohan's crotch? Will she be wearing panties while signing autographs (we’d link to this but it’s NSFW and actually pretty nasty)? Will SFist Rita be so lucky to mention her in her Swells By the Numbers column? Will she get into a slut-off with a bondage slave? And the big question, will she call Gavin?

Or maybe we'll meet up with her at Zietgiest as she mows down yummy burgers while rocking out to the Misfits? Err, probably not. Our guess is she’ll probably come in, fly out, and go do all those aforementioned things in LA.

But we could dream, can’t we?

I'm Rubber, You're Glue...

If it seems like it's a shinier, happier world out there, it's because this week is "No Name-Calling Week." Besides getting support from other educational advocacy groups, the program also has the backing of the Girl Scouts of America and Amnesty International, a fact that makes us wonder if soon we'll be seeing a "No Name Calling" World Tour with Sting, Bono, and Jackson Browne. The inspiration for the week is the book The Misfits, by James Howe, a book in which four kids, one of whom is gay, run for student office on a no name calling platform. The kids lose as everyone votes for Pedro, but lessons are learned and the children who read it get that warm fuzzy feeling right before going back to playing "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas". Naturally, the book is banned in several red-states.

But because this week was dreamed up by a gay rights group, religious right groups, obviously moving on from their attacks on Sponge Bob Squarepants, are criticizing the week. Critics are saying that in teaching tolerance, the program is really teaching kids that it's not okay to tease gay kids. Christianity, of course, has long preached that while violence is wrong and one should love thy neighbor, name calling is ok. In fact, while it's been awhile since we've read through the New Testament, we can definitely remember that Jesus often referred to the Romans as "knuckleheads" and called High Priest Caiaphas "you hockeypuck." Says Robert Knight, director of Concerned Women for America's Culture and Family Institute and we're guessing not a woman, "I hope schools will realize it's less an exercise in tolerance than a platform for liberal groups to promote their pan-sexual agenda." That, of course, must not stand.
