• Yosemite National Park eliminated the reservation system for its annual Firefall phenomenon viewing, which is expected to occur February 10 through 26 this year. The park will now be restricting car and foot traffic, requiring all visitors to hike 3 miles round-trip between the Yosemite Falls parking lot and the designated viewing area. [Los Angeles Times]

Were it not for a last-minute reversal by President Trump, brokered in secret by a couple of billionaires and SF's mayor, San Francisco and Oakland could have easily descended into the same violent chaos, provoked by an ICE invasion, that we're seeing in Minneapolis.

The Trump administration has, since Trump took office this second shameful time, been working their way down a list of enemy states and cities where federal agents have been sent in on a draconian mission to arrest as many Latino people as possible. This same kind of aggression isn't happening in Republican-leaning Texas or Florida, which also have huge numbers of undocumented immigrants. But it's happening in the places that largely aren't grateful for Trump being in the White House: Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, and now Minneapolis.

San Francisco and the Bay Area have seen a modicum of ICE activity since early last year, and some small protests have broken out around ICE's headquarters and the immigration court on Sansome Street. But we haven't seen anything like the continued, vengeful onslaught of masked federal agents that Minneapolis — a city about half the size of San Francisco, with a much smaller immigrant community — has seen over the last two months.

The federal government doesn't have the resources to conduct such an onslaught everywhere all at once, and ICE agents have been moving, at Trump's whim, from locale to locale — with an aggressive hiring push that has reportedly added 12,000 new ICE agents to the training rolls in the last four months.

It's easy to see how San Francisco escaped the crosshairs by mere hours back in October, in some late-night conversations Trump reportedly had with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and SF Mayor Daniel Lurie, not necessarily in that order. With 100 federal border patrol agents reportedly set to begin staging for a "surge" at a Coast Guard base in Alameda on Thursday, October 23, and some unknown number of ICE agents likely to follow them, these men got the president on the phone and convinced him to call off his goons.

We don't know what was said exactly in the Lurie phone call — Lurie told us that Thursday morning only that he'd spoken to Trump and told him "San Francisco is on the rise" and "the president understands that we are the global hub for technology, and when San Francisco is strong, our country is strong." — and there may be some pending legal action to get a transcript of the phone call.

But seeing what has unfolded in Minneapolis, with ICE perhaps learning new tactics since its "surge" last June in Los Angeles, it is easy to imagine that we could have seen similar bloodshed of innocent protesters, if not far worse, should the battle have come to the Bay Area in October.

Minneapolis residents still have the George Floyd protests of 2020 fresh in their memory, but the Bay Area has an even deeper and longer tradition of protest and the anarchic, mostly message-free chaos that can accompany it, to which a federal brigade would likely react with increasing escalation.

As Minneapolis Chief of Police Brian O'Hara told the New York Times' Daily podcast following the murder of Renee Good, Minneapolis police have been working for the last five years to regain the public's trust, and to train heavily in de-escalation techniques. And here you have federal agents, many of them clearly poorly trained, with zero sense of how to de-escalate fraught situations.

That point was proven again on Saturday with the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by an ICE agent, in a chaotic scuffle in which agents appeared to have fired their weapons indiscriminately, all after one of them shouted about Pretti having a weapon — which video shows he did not touch.

Even without Trump's "surge" kicking off here in the Bay Area, a day of scant protest ended in a bizarre and also chaotic scene outside the Coast Guard base in Alameda, in which Coast Guard security personnel fired shots at a U-Haul that was driving toward them in the area of the protest — and the full details of what prompted this situation remain unclear. Two people, including the U-Haul driver, were injured in the incident.

The point being, when tensions are high, when armed agents are involved, and when impassioned individuals start expressing their passions in the face of those armed agents, the guns quickly come out, and people can get hurt. People also get hurt simply because situations become volatile, or confusing, and untrained officers resort to using guns.

Many, many people foresaw the terrible outcomes if that surge had gone forward in the Bay Area, and even activists were trying to warn each other to remain calm and keep from getting hurt. Chances are, if it were here, it would have been uglier, and bloodier.

And there is nothing keeping the administration from turning their attention back here, and to California generally — especially when Governor Gavin Newsom makes his 2028 presidential campaign official and starts grabbing more of the spotlight. So we should all take heed from Minneapolis and prepare ourselves, just in case.

The Trump administration will, in the way of fascists, continue to try to blame the protesters, blame Democrats, and cast ICE agents as heroes. Keep using your own eyes and ears, though. Keep telling your Trump-voting relatives to use theirs. This is all far from over.

• California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Friday during a press conference in SF that he’s awarding the cities of San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego a total of $412 million to fund programs supporting the homeless. SF will receive $39.9 million for two shelters and three navigation centers through June 2029, which serve 600 adults and 75 youth per night. [KTVU]

In preparation for California Academy of Sciences’ big memorial Sunday for Claude, the late albino alligator, Boudin Bakery’s master baker Fernando Padilla, who’s been with Boudin for 46 years, has been hard at work constructing the world’s largest sourdough alligator. Measuring an impressive eight feet long and consisting of 70 pounds of dough, the gator is as long as the bakery’s oven, complete with maraschino cherries for eyes.

• Sonoma County-based celebrity chef Guy Fieri appears to be on the mend after a devastating fall that led to the  “exploding” of his quad muscle during the filming of his show Flavor Town Food Fight in November. Investigators say Boelter, a survivalist with a hit list and arsenal of weapons, had prepared a “bailout plan” for his family and was tracked down after a 43-hour manhunt using drone and phone data. • A fourth federal judge has blocked one of President Trump’s executive orders targeting elite law firms, ruling that his order against Susman Godfrey was “unconstitutional from beginning to end.” The ruling adds to a string of legal defeats for Trump’s unprecedented campaign against Big Law, which judges have condemned as a threat to constitutional rights and the independence of the legal profession. • The Supreme Court upheld the nearly 30-year-old Universal Service Fund fee on phone bills in a 6-3 ruling Friday, preserving billions in subsidies for phone and internet access in schools, libraries, and rural areas. Minnesota is reeling after a politically motivated shooting on Saturday left State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband dead, and State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife critically wounded. The suspect, 57-year-old Vance Boelter, was the subject of a two-day manhant before being arrested Sunday.

[Update] As the Associated Press reports, Boelter surrendered to authorities on Sunday in a field near his home. He was arrested and charged with two counts of murder and two of attempted murder.

Law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), launched the largest manhunt in Minnesota history Saturday following the fatal shooting of a state lawmaker and her husband, and the shootings of another lawmaker and his wife. Both attacks were believed to be politically motivated.

Boelter, a former director of patrol operations for a private security firm called Praetorian Guard Security Services, is believed to have impersonated a police officer during the attacks. According to Brooklyn Park police, officers responded to a report at Hortman’s home and encountered what appeared to be a marked police vehicle with emergency lights. A man in uniform exited the home and opened fire on officers before fleeing the scene.

As reported by NPR, state Representative Melissa Hortman, a former speaker of the Minnesota State House, and her husband Mark both died of multiple gunshot wounds, which the Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled homicides. “Melissa is someone that I wish the whole nation knew,” said US Senator Amy Klobuchar on MSNBC. “She worked in a practically tied legislature and got a budget done at the end of this year… She stood up for women’s rights, passed school lunches and family leave, and loved her community.”

State Senator Hoffman and his wife Yvette were also shot multiple times. They both underwent surgery and are in stable condition, though Hoffman suffered significant injuries. Authorities have not confirmed whether Boelter had a personal connection to the victims, but BCA Superintendent Drew Evans acknowledged “some overlap with public meetings” involving Hoffman.

Investigators believe Boelter fled the Brooklyn Park area, leading the city to lift a temporary shelter-in-place order Saturday afternoon. A law enforcement source told CNN a “lookout” alert was issued to border patrol agents on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border. Photos of Boelter have been widely distributed to federal agencies.

The FBI confirmed Boelter had survival gear in a vehicle recovered by police. A document obtained by CNN revealed the discovery of a hit list in the car with nearly 70 names — mostly prominent pro-choice Minnesota lawmakers. “This was a deliberate and violent attack on public servants and their families,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. “We are working with our law enforcement partners and using every available resource to locate and apprehend Vance Boelter.”

According to ABC News Minneapolis affiliate KSTP, the FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to Boelter’s arrest and conviction. The public is urged to call 1-800-CALL-FBI or email tips to bca.tips@state.mn.us.

Boelter’s employer, Praetorian Guard, markets itself as an armed security firm outfitted with “the best personal protective equipment that money can buy,” including police-style Ford Explorer utility vehicles. The company’s website states its officers are trained by U.S. military veterans. CNN has reached out to the company for comment.

Images released by the FBI appear to show the suspect wearing a latex-style full-face mask, which experts say may have been used to disguise his identity. “If you notice the eye sockets, there’s just a hole there,” said CNN law enforcement analyst John Miller. “The ear appears to be part of a molded mask, not a real ear. It’s entirely possible this was used to throw police off his true identity.”

President Donald Trump briefly commented on the incident as he left for a military parade, calling the shootings “absolutely terrible.” In a formal statement, he added, “Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America. God Bless the great people of Minnesota, a truly great place!”

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said the killings appear to be a targeted political assassination. “We lost the dearest of friends,” he said. “Speaker Hortman was a formidable public servant, a skilled negotiator, and a voice of reason. She was irreplaceable and deeply missed.” Walz said he had spoken to Vice President JD Vance about the ongoing investigation and praised the federal response.

The U.S. Capitol Police also issued a statement Saturday, confirming they are coordinating with federal, state, and local partners. Officers have reached out to all members of Minnesota’s congressional delegation after learning some were named in Boelter’s alleged manifesto. Capitol Police are offering security details to lawmakers who request additional protection.

Boelter was described as 6 feet 1 inch tall, 220 pounds, and possibly wearing a cowboy hat and long-sleeved shirt. Authorities had emphasized that the suspect was considered armed and extremely dangerous.

“This has been a nationwide scourge of threats against elected officials and judges and election workers,” Klobuchar said. “It just keeps getting worse.”

Sunday afternoon they won their ninth straight game, and seventh straight on the road, against the Minnesota Wild (not, as you might guess from the uniforms, the Polar Elf Sniper Brigage). Marleau saved the game with one of the most spectacular defensive plays of the year, batting a fluttering shot that was deflected past goaltender Evgeni Nabokov out of the air as it was heading for an open net in the final seconds of regulation. After a scoreless overtime, Marleau scored the game winner in the shootout. Where you been all this time, Patty?

The improved play of Marleau and Jonathan Cheechoo (who has been scoring goals in absolute bunches lately, signifying he's fully recovered from double-hernia surgery) has been one of the primary reasons for the Sharks recent dominance, but the catalyst was the arrival of slick-skating defenseman Brian "Soup" Campbell from Buffalo in exchange for the promising but unseasoned power forward Steve Bernier. Sharks GM Doug Wilson has been looking for an offensive-minded d-man who can lead the breakout and quarterback the power-play for many years now. Campbell is that guy. His spin-o-rama goal to cement the Sharks entertaining win against the Montreal Canadiens last week is going to be in highlight reels for years to come. He's also good defensively, capable of playing the body, and a good mentor for young defenseman like Christian Ehrhoff and Marc-Eduard Vlasic. He'll also be an unrestricted free-agent at the end of the year, so let's hope that Wilson can work on an extension for Campbell. Like a midwestern hot dish, the universal binding ingredient, what brings all the flavors together, for this year's Sharks is Soup.

That's when this article on bars working around the smoking ban in Minnesota caught our eye. According to the article, "Dozens of bars are expected to stage 'theater nights' this weekend in which patrons are dubbed actors. The law, which went into effect in October, permits performers to smoke during a theatrical production." Thus, by staging this barside cigarette hotboxing, both the childhood dream of becoming an actor and smoking with drink in hand can come true.

Although the article is from the Minneapolis area, BoingBoing points out that California law is similar and allows actors to smoke onstage as well. The two big questions on our mind are these: what bar is going to be the first to pick up this idea and run with it, and who is going to be the spoilsport to get "theater night" shut down?

At around 11:30 a.m. today at Digital Pre-Press International (DPI), located at Mariposa and Minnesota, a woman died while on the clock. It seems she "became enmeshed in the massive piece of equipment" at the San Francisco-based printing press. SFFD Lt. Ken Smith told CBS 5 that although his crew was successful "extricating her from the machine," she failed to recover from injuries sustained in the accident. As of now it is unclear as to what exact job the unidentified woman was performing just prior to her death.

This comes after yesterday's on-site fatality at an abandoned PG&E plant, where voluminous falling debris took the life of Luis Gonzalez, 43, of Ceres.

Timberwolves 109 Warriors 108- And how did the Warriors celebrate not only MLK Day but the official start of George Bush's last year in office? They lost to the worst team in the NBA, the Minnesota Timberwolves as an Al Harrington lay up in the final seconds clanged off the rim. The TWolves had lost 16 straight games on the road. Of interest is the fact that the Beard had only fifteen points and missed a couple of shots at the end of the game, this coming after spending the previous night partying in Sundance as the movie he produced, "Made in America," premiered.
