First of all, it's too damn hot in both places. Second of all, the jobs aren't there.

"You'll be back!" is what went through many of our heads when transient tech folk — and others — decamped for cheaper and less-locked-down cities during the pandemic. And while San Francisco took its lumps and downtown is still just slowly dusting itself off, Austin and Miami are feeling the whiplash of being flash-in-the-pan hotspots, now in the mid-2020s.

The Chronicle has a piece today about how "Miami was hyped as the next Silicon Valley during the pandemic," but the city saw one of the highest rates of domestic out-migration last year of any major city, indicating that it is a hotspot no more. The piece points to rising housing costs and the lack of high-paying jobs in Miami as being the key to the problem — about 1.8% of the city's population fled for a different US city between 2024 and 2025 — and the story goes back much further than the pandemic.

San Francisco and New York have both seen small out-migrations over the last decade, with San Francisco seeing the biggest dip in 2021, and since then a rebound to 2019 levels as of 2025. Unlike New York and Miami, SF had a period of population swell between 2011 and 2015 which began dipping after that.

Graphic via MiamiRealtors

Miami, on the other hand, has had a fairly steady outflow of domestic out-migration since 2011, with the exception of the pandemic years, during which it did not recover to pre-2011 levels, but had three years of slightly slower out-migration.

This was made up for by foreign in-migration, with Miami continuing to show overall population gains, due primarily to foreigners, as MiamiRealtors explains.

Meanwhile, all the billionaires are buying homes in the Miami area, though not in the city proper. Peter Thiel announced in December that he was relocationg Thiel Capital to Miami from Denver, after leaving Palo Alto in 2020. And we learned earlier this month that Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan have bought a house in the same billionaire enclave outside Miami as Ivanka Trump.

This all seems likely motivated by the threat of a "billionaire tax" in California, and the desire to shield their wealth from it, if it comes to pass.

As for Austin, its time in the sun, at least for the tech world, already seemed to be ending by the middle of last year, according to the Wall Street Journal. While tech employment has been growing again on the coasts, in SF and New York, tech employment was on the decline the past two years in places like Austin, Houston, Denver, and Toronto.

This is despite moves to relocate company headquarters to Texas by the likes of Tesla and Hewlett Packard.

The Zuckerberg-Chans Just Broke a Miami Home Price Record With Mansion Purchase on Indian Creek

We heard a few weeks ago that Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan were, for reasons we can only guess, seeking out a new home in Miami, and the deal reportedly closed on Monday.

Business & Tech

mark zuckerberg

priscilla chan

Real Estate

Miami

billionaires

Jay Barmann

We heard a few weeks ago that Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan were, for reasons we can only guess, seeking out a new home in Miami, and the deal reportedly closed on Monday.

As Bloomberg reports, the Zuckerberg-Chans have purchased some land and a partially constructed mansion in the gated community of Indian Creek, overlooking Biscayne Bay, for a record-breaking $170 million. The previous record-high price in Miami-Dade County was set in 2025 by developer Vlad Doronin, with the $120 million sale of his mansion on Star Island.

The property is at 7 Indian Creek Island Road, on the man-made island that has become known in the area as "Billionaire Bunker." Google Street View has, of course, not been allowed to map the area, but a satellite image shows an empty parcel of land at that address beside another enormous looking mansion. Per Bloomberg, the sellers were celebrity plastic surgeon Aaron Rollins and his wife, Marine, and some kind of construction has apparently occurred since this satellite image was taken.

A Google satellite image of Indian Creek.

The Zuckerberg-Chans have barely just finished construction on the controversial compound they've assembled out of multiple homes on a quiet block in Palo Alto, and they already own vacation homes in Hawaii and on Lake Tahoe. So this may just be a place to park some of Zuckerberg's $231 billion estimated net worth, or it may be a way for the family to declare themselves residents of Florida in the coming years, if, say, California passes that billionaire's tax.

Or, maybe they're planning to actually high-tail it out of Palo Alto for good, given that the city council has recently been getting more hostile to billionaire compounds like theirs. Might as well go where the billionaires are more welcome and all share a country club!

Indian Creek, the island, dates back to around 1900, when it was created out of earth dredged out of Biscayne Bay for drainage. Development there began in 1928, with a group of five men — Midwesterners Harold Metzing, Walter Briggs, Fred Todd, and Edwin Gould, along with John Brander of Virginia — purchased what was then mostly a mangrove swamp, and mapped out 41 waterfront home lots priced at $20,000 apiece wrapping around an 18-hole golf course.

Aerial view of the Indian Creek country club and golf course near Miami Beach in Miami on April 08, 2025 in Miami, Florida. And notably this week, former liberal Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly seeking a new piece of real estate in Miami.

Is Zuckerberg just the latest billionaire to make a panic purchase and call a lawyer to have his official residence changed ahead of a possible "billionaire's tax" that isn't even on the ballot yet? Or has he just taken to Indian Creek, the posh enclave north of Miami Beach where Ivanka Trump has a home, a short drive from Mar-a-Lago, where Zuck has been a repeat guest lately?

Regardless of the reason, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan have been house shopping on the man-made island in Biscayne Bay that's been nicknamed "Billionaire's Bunker," which is also home to Tom Brady and Jeff Bezos, among others.

The home, on the waterfront of Indian Creek, is reportedly newly constructed, and a transaction is underway if not already complete.

This adds to the Zuckerberg-Chans' multiple real estate holdings, all of them essentially bunkers/compounds of their own, in Palo Alto, on the western shore of Lake Tahoe, and on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where the couple added 1,000 acres to their compound last year.

With three school-aged daughters, how many places can this family logistically live in during the course of a year?! We shall see. But perhaps these are all decent places to park pieces of Zuckerberg's estimated $240 billion fortune.

We don't know how much the Miami house is going to cost the couple, but it could be a significant sum. As Bloomberg notes, Google co-founder Sergey Brin is in the process of buying a home on Biscayne Bay worth $50 million, and fellow co-founder Larry Page has bought a three-house compound in nearby Coconut Grove for a cool $190 million.

Do they know something we don't about future hurricane patterns, or...?

In any event, this certainly could be a play toward pretending that the Zuckerberg-Chans don't primarily reside in Palo Alto, should a billionaire's tax actually come to pass. And/or Priscilla is just dying to have Ivanka and Jared over for dinner while Zuckerberg practices his golf swing to play with the prez.

Previously: Palo Alto City Council to Take Up Legislation to Clamp Down on Billionaire Compounds

Top image: Priscilla Chan (L) and Mark Zuckerberg attend WSJ. Well-compensated Niners quarterback Colin Kaepernick will not face any charges related to a suspicious incident that allegedly occurred in Miami back in April. According to the State Attorney's office in Miami-Dade county, there was insufficient evidence that any crime occurred at an apartment shared by Kaepernick and Seahawks receiver Ricardo Lockette.

At the time, a woman who had a previously relationship with Kaepernick said she remembered drinking and smoking pot in the apartment, but went to lay down when she began to feel light-headed. She claimed Kaepernick undressed her and then left the room, but the next thing she remember was waking up in a hospital with no knowledge of how she got there.

Although the incident was initially reported as a sexual assault, no assault charges were ever filed and both Kaepernick and Lockette were investigated for what authorities simply referred to as "a suspicious incident." Kaepernick also said he did not commit any crime.

“No charges, no indication that a criminal act was committed,” Ed Griffith of the State Attorney’s office said. “She was alleging that she may have been the victim of a sexual assault, and there was no evidence.”

Earlier this month, the Niners gave Kaepernick a record $126 million, six-year contract.

Granted, media just picked up on the story in the last couple of hours, but the photo had been shared about 200 times and had several confused comments from friends before his profile and timeline were disabled.

We in fact saw it before it was pulled, and the Daily News posted a blurred out version here.

The man's name is Derek Medina, and just yesterday afternoon he had posted a happy looking photo of himself out with his family (right). He had been married to his wife, Jennifer Alfonso, for about a year and a half, according to CBS Miami. Their 10-year-old daughter was in the house at the time of the shooting, apparently, but was unharmed.

In his confession post he wrote that his wife was "punching" him (see it below). Medina turned himself in to police this morning saying that he and his wife had had a domestic dispute, and he shot her.

What would possess a person to post a photo of a spouse they shot for the world, and their friends and family, to see, is beyond us. But needless to say, this is the world we now live in, wherein everyone posts everything, all the time. We are going to wash our eyes out now.

We can’t remember a good series the Giants had down there. But finally, the worst Giants team of the past fifteen (twenty?) years appears to have gotten one over the Fish by taking a four game series. About four years too late if you ask us. Hell, ten years too late. Anyways, a real live pennant race is coming to the Phonebooth tonight as the Giants play host to the Cubs who are involved in that threeway race for the NL Central crown. You can't be any sort of baseball fan and not by psyched by the prospect of a pennant race between the Cubs, Cards, and the Milwaukee Brewers. And as we kind of like the Cubs being loveable losers and hate Tony LaRussa, we're hoping the Giants continue with their winning ways and help the rumblin', stumblin' Brew Crew out.

No, really, we think everyone knows things are pricey out here, and Forbe's is utilizing some interesting methodology to glean "overpricey' from the "pricey," and turn it into everyone's favorite, a Top 10 list.

Well, we weren't the worst; that honor went to San Diego.

From the get-go, this was less interesting than it could have been, because they only examined the top 40 largest metro areas -- so this is basically a top 25% list. Then again, we guess you have to compare apples with apples.

The article posits that the markets in "bubble territory" are those with a high price-to-earnings ratio (in other words, a measure of value representing return on investment per dollar spent), low affordability, low income growth, and a high cost of living. The article states that:

San Francisco, ranked fourth, fits that bill. Despite home prices growing at a 2% clip over last year, according to the Natioanbl Assoc. of Realtors (NAR), the city by the bay ranks third to last in expected income growth, reports Moody's. Not good news in a market where only 7.5% of housing is affordable for the median-income earner. Combine that with a housing P/E ratio over 50, and it isn't difficult to imagine some softening on the horizon."

The list, in order, went: San Diego, Miami, Sacramento, San Francisco, D.C., Honolulu, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, and San Jose.

Adventure, excitement,! All hard information was culled from NFL.com's pretty excellent draft tracker site. Proceed.

* Selection # / Team (trade info) / Player / Position / Height / Weight / School

* 01 / Oakland / Russell, JaMarcus / QB / 6-6 / 263 / Louisiana State: Sorry, JaMarcus; the Raiders only picked up one offensive lineman in the draft. So, uh, now you've got that guy and Jeremy Newberry to add to last year's offensive line unit. Start buying pain medication in bulk now, my friend, 'cause you will be sacked a lot this coming season. On the bright side for Oakland, have you seen how well the Golden State Warriors are doing?

* 02 / Detroit / Johnson, Calvin / WR / 6-4 / 237 / Georgia Tech: The founder of K Records and a key member of the Northwestern indie rock scene, it will be intriguing to see how well Johnson excels within Detroit offensive coordinator Mad Mike Martz's multi-receiver pass patterns. (Har, har.) Now seriously, either Calvin Johnson has the talent to be a success wherever they go, but Detroit's legacy of leadership futility makes it specifically difficult to succeed there. Fire Millen!

* 03 / Cleveland / Thomas, Joe / OT / 6-6 / 313 / Wisconsin: Went fishin' with his Dad for draft day rather than dealing with the New York City draft spectacle. Smart guy.

* 04 / Tampa Bay / Adams, Gaines / DE / 6-5 / 260 / Clemson: The Bucs coveted WR Calvin Johnson, but'll settle for a new defensive edge-rusher to succeed the aging pass-rushing DE Simeon Rice.

* 05 / Arizona / Brown, Levi / OT / 6-4 / 328 / Penn State: Must protect pretty QB Leinart. So, they got this guy.

* 06 / Washington / Landry, LaRon / FS / 6-2 / 205 / Louisiana State: Sure must suck to be a Washington fan. After wasting a bunch of money on free agent safety Adam Archuleta last season, Washington spends its first-rounder on another safety.

* 07 / Minnesota / Peterson, Adrian / RB / 6-2 / 218 / Oklahoma: A speedy power-back with a history of injuries, this guy is the new Priest Holmes. What that means is this caveat: sure he's great; but how long will he last?

* 08 / Atlanta (from Houston) / Anderson, Jamaal / DE / 6-6 / 279 / Arkansas: The Falcons have been trying to buy or draft a pass rush for the past couple years. Maybe this'll do'er.

* 09 / Miami / Ginn Jr., Ted / WR / 6-0 / 180 / Ohio State: Surprise! On her couch in Chicago, Jessica shouted at her television in disbelief. We don't blame her. The Dolphins needneedneedNEEED a quarterback above all else! Yet instead of picking up ND's uber-touted QB Brady Quinn, Miami picks up a speedster receiver coming off a debilitating leg injury. Who-the-wha-now? Hmph. Extremely high-risk, with poor odds of good results. This pick will determine how the the history of the 2007 NFL Draft is remembered.

* 12 / Buffalo / Lynch, Marshawn / RB / 5-11 / 217 / California: Cal's own Marshawn goes to Buffalo to replace Willis McGahee at running back, and appreciate the musical canon of Ani DiFranco.

* 13 / St. Louis / Carriker, Adam / DE / 6-6 / 292 / Nebraska: A big, meaty defensive end from Nebraska, Carriker's name is a lot more fun if you imagine Homestar Runner saying it out loud. Try!

The Raiders -- owners of the worst record in the NFL last season at 2-14 -- have been saddled with the most difficult schedule in 2007? Huh-whaah?!

Aye, 'tis true. Along with AFS correspondent DJ Burrito's beloved Buffalo Bills, the 2007 Raiders are calendared to face franchises that had a combined winning percent of .539 in 2006.

Let's explain how this came to be. Here is how NFL schedules are generated since the 2002 season's re-alignment. Steady now:

* Home and away against its three division opponents (6 games).
* The four teams from another division within its conference on a rotating three-year cycle (4 games).
* The four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating four-year cycle (4 games).
* Two intraconference games based on the previous year's standings (2 games). These games will match a first-place team against the first-place teams in the two same-conference divisions the team is not scheduled to play that season. The second-place, third-place, and fourth-place teams in a conference will be matched in the same way each year.

Awrioght-then. First off, the other three teams in the AFC West division (SD, KC, DEN) are either good or better-than-good. San Diego had the best record in the NFL last season at 14-2. Both Denver and AFS correspondent Kyle's Kansas City Chiefs each went 9-7.

The two divisions that the Raiders draw in 2007 are the AFC South (IND, JAC, TEN, HOU) and the "Black And Blue" NFC North (CHI, GB, MIN, DET). There are some particularly powerful teams in there. Da Bearsss had the best record in the NFC with Lovie's keen Cover Two D. SFist Eve's Indianapolis Colts rode their precision one-back offensive scheme all the way to Super Bowl XLI.

Though the AFC South's Titans and Jaguars both finished at .500 in 2006, both squads fall squarely under the label of fiery teams that no one wants to see on their slate in 2007: the Jags because of their punishing style of play in all aspects of the game, and the Titans for the undefendable QB Vince "he-just-wins-games" Young.

The two intraconference last-place teams are the still-unformed Cleveland Browns, and the underperforming Miami Dolphins -- both of which could beat the Raiders. In fact the Browns did beat the Raiders in 2006.

Yeah, this Raider season ain't shaping up to be a whole lot of fun. But we're not going to sugar-coat it for you. And we're not even to the draft yet. Damn you, NFL, damn you.

Just as we did with the 49ers, after the jump we have analysis, forecasting, and a simplified text version of the Raiders' 2007 schedule suitable for wallet or wall. Just copy, paste, print, and grouse.

Just ask last year's champions, the Miami Heat, about that one (the NBA season, not the acid trip). Well lo and behold, the Warriors are playing the last month of this season like a seasoned DeadHead instead of a burned-out meth-breath. After stomping the playoff-bound Utah Jazz Monday night in the O-rena, 126-102, the Warriors' playoff chances are skyrocketing like so many fantastic colors, and their days as league doormat may truly be numbered.

Like Monta Ellis on his way to the tin, the Warriors are soaring right now. Just in time for a critical playoff push. Photo from espn.com.

And speaking of numbers, here's a few figures to trip on:

2,094: The number of minutes that Baron Davis has played this year, compared to 1,971 minutes all of last year. Think those extra minutes made a difference in the Warriors record this season? Ya think.

105.9: Number of points the team is averaging per game this year, good for second in the Association and up from 98.5 last year. Of course, they're also giving up 107.3 points a game this year, up from 99.8 last year, but we'll let that slide for right now.

42: The number of wins SFist projected for the team at the start of the season. If the Warriors run the table, they can make this number and our day.

38: The team's current victory total. This is the team's highest win total since 2002-2003 and a total they have not surpassed since 1993-1994 during the First Golden Era of Nellie.

34: Number of wins the team posted the last two consecutive years. Hey, they're moving in the right direction -- they've gotten back to where they were four years ago. That's progress that even The Chimp can appreciate (apologies to higher primates everywhere).

24: Number of points by which the hometown hoopsters whipped up on the fourth-seeded Utah Jazz Monday night in the O-rena. Damn it feels good to be a gangster.

16: Number of games that 2006 first-round draft pick Patrick O'Bryant has played this year for the parent club. Compare that to the 25 games he played for the vaunted Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League.

15: Number of times Tim Kawakami has flip-flopped on whether the team will make the playoffs this season.

College Basketball: How Was Your Weekend?

The first weekend of the men's and women's NCAA basketball tournaments is in the books -- are you still alive in <a href="http://www.sfist.com/archives/2007/03/15/college_basketbal...

SF News

basketball

Bay Area

Big Dance

books

Cardinals

college

comedy

Corpus Christi

dance

Final Four

Florida

headlines

history

Islanders

Maryland

Miami

Michigan

Michigan State

NCAA

NCAA basketball

News+Sports

Notre Dame

Ohio State

Ohio State University

Once

Oregon

Bay Area Sports

Stanford

Stanford Cardinal

Tar Heels

tech

Texas

Texas A

Texas Longhorns

the underdog

university

USC

Virginia

Virginia Tech

Washington

Washington State

chris

The first weekend of the men's and women's NCAA basketball tournaments is in the books -- are you still alive in your office pool? Not if you took the Road to the Final Four less traveled.

If you went with the favorites, chances are you're sitting pretty. With the exception of the toothless male Badgers of Wisconsin, all first and second seeds in both tourneys advanced to the Sweet 16. That's not to say that a few high seeds didn't get a scare or that some middling seeds will never get a chance to germinate into full-blown Cinderellas, but overall, both tournaments are sticking to the script.

In the men's bracket, as we predicted, the only Bay Area entry, the Stanford Cardinal, slept through the first half of their game with Louisville like it was 8:00 AM World History en route to getting dropped by the Cardinals, 78-58. Meanwhile, the 11-seed Rams of Virginia Commonwealth gored a substandard Duke team, while sweethearts of the Big Dance Winthrop lived up to expectations by rolling Notre Dame like a barrel of lucky charms. All four seven seeds prevailed. Not counting the 8/9 matchups (we don't really count a nine seed beating an eight seed as an upset), there were only two upsets in the entire first round.

It's been tough for the little guys and gals in this year's NCAA basketball tournaments. Sweep the leg, Marist! Photo from Comedy-zone.net.

In the second round, another smattering of high seeds got whacked, but not many. Vanderbilt sewed up a victory over Washington State, and Butler graciously showed Maryland the door. Tennessee volunteered fourth-seeded Virginia for a loss and USC lassoed the Texas Longhorns, but that was about it. Erstwhile second seed Wisconsin is the highest seed to go down thus far and their conquerors, the Runnin' Rebels of UNLV, are the highest remaining seed at #7. Not exactly a banner year for the underdog.

A few high seeds did get pushed, but ultimately prevailed. In the first round, Oregon barely ducked a haymaker from Miami, Wisconsin came back from 18 down to swamp the Islanders of Texas A&M, Corpus Christi, and Virginia Tech had to do the Hokie-Pokie to fight past the 12th-seeded Illini. Over the weekend, defending champs Florida had to work hard to knock back the Boilermakers of Purdue, and the Michigan State Spartans did their best 300 impression before falling to the Tar Heels. Xavier dueled mightily with the Ohio State University, taking the Odens into overtime before succumbing 78-71.

For the record, of the 16 teams remaining, there are four #1 seeds, three #2 seeds, three #3 seeds, and one #4 seed. Three #5 seeds, a #6, and a #7 round out the remainder of the field. Once again, it looks like the powers that be knew what they were doing in setting the postseason matchups.

In the women's bracket, it was more of the same. Traditionally less upset-oriented than their male counterparts, the women's tourney has had some exciting moments thus far, but not many -- only three upsets in the first round.

Interview: Get Mortified's Scott Lifton

SFist interviews Get Mortified's Scott Lifton

Arts & Entertainment

Bay Area

coffee

craigslist

crime

drugs

Features

gay

High School

Interviews

live show

love

Makeout Room

Miami

people

poetry

private school

schools

sex

sf

emily

What's the most mortifying thing you've encountered in this project?
My mother reading my diary entry about me almost stalking a girl in high school

How many years must pass before people can actually laugh at themselves?
About 7

Do you keep a journal now?
No

Has the Mortified project changed the way you look at teens today?
Yeah...I realize how we are universally fucked up, confused, and lonely..How our sphere of influence is so small when we are younger and everything seems larger than life...I also realize that although most
of us look back at our teen years as the best time in our lives, most of us were really depressed then, yet even in that depression we felt a more intense kind of life both in the ups and downs..In some ways I kind of miss it, In most ways, I don't

If you could go back and redo your teenage years, what would you do differently?
I wouldn't have been so damn shy, and I would have learned an instrument and other language

Who is on the line up for the 16th/17th
It’s a mostly doomed valentines show, so expect hopeless crushes, embarrassment, and awkwardness... This show features:
Sacha Rothschild: A nice Jewish girl leaves her private school for the public junior high schools of Miami only to enter a world of drugs, sex, and crime.

Nic Arzen: A coming out journal of a man who can’t even tell his diary that he's gay

Ian Fratar: A real hootenanny of back woodsy love poetry

Cindy Picara: A horny 17 year old's search for love or at least a kiss in trashy novels

Ahli Lewis: Inside the love/hate mind of a beauty pageant queen

Amber Milner: True story of a 6 foot 2 awkward 15 year old girl who cant fit in and her spiral descent into depression and horribly bad poetry

Myself: A male point of view on falling in and out of love in a week\
