Alas, it was not a good weekend for cyclists of the Bay Area.

In more pink slip sadness today, (owned by Denver-based MediaNews Group) eliminated 50 jobs. Fifteen newsroom employees and 19 employees from "other parts of the paper" were let go today. Citing a loss of advertising revenue because to the evil Internet, this most recent workforce slashing represents "a cut of about 5 percent" of the over Merc staff.

Before heading to a more pristine setting in Atherton, Barack Obama was in the Mission today at the Women's Building, stumping for votes before California's Feb. 5 primary. Over plastic cups of water, he met with four Dr. Laura-unapproved single mothers--two of them staunch Obama supporters, two "on the fence"--and we're loving the one on the left, school teacher Kara Daillak, 38. (Ditch the kid, and let's go get smashed in 'loin tonight.)

Delay, delay, dealy in the deadly tiger case

We're not one to laugh at church vandalism. Ever. But the following story in today's Mercury News is goddamn hilarious. And hilariously bad.

Three weeks ago, a Caltrain conductor told the San Jose Mercury News that "Trains stay on tracks and if you stay off the tracks, it's very easy not to get hit by a train" ("Family of Man Killed in Caltrain Accident Files Suit").

Todd David Burpee, the man who kidnapped and raped a Palo Alto teen last week, just busted out a heavy confession detailing the hour-plus moments he spent with his victim. It seems that this was all because he was upset and "just [wanted] someone to take out his frustration on after a fight with his girlfriend," reports the San Jose Mercury News. They go on to say that "angry after a fight with his...

Luis Alvarado, 18 -- one of the two men charged with kidnapping, raping, and stabbing to death Sany San -- committed suicide in his jail cell using a bedsheet today.

Well, first the MediaNews conglomerate moves the Oakland Tribune from its iconic downtown Oakland tower (at left) and then they take away recognition of the Tribune's Newspaper Guild labor union.

Beloved Jennine from The Coveted writes here about how this year’s San Francisco Fashion Week denied her and other bloggers precious invitations to cover the event or (worse) any of its VIP, open-bar parties. Enough to drop your coke bullet into the toilet, right?!

Campus tree residency news! At Cal, it turns out those people living in the trees to protest the UC's plan to cut them down themselves did significant damage to the trees in question by cutting off the tops of the trees to put in their sleeping platforms. Ah, the sweet smell of irony. Meanwhile, at rival Stanford, they've finally evicted a veteran who's been living in the tree grove off Palm Drive for almost 10 years. (Does anyone actually pay to live at Stanford anymore? Goodness.)

    Here's todays sports news

Lew Wolff announced today that he's signed an agreement to purchase 168 acres of land in Fremont to build the new A's stadium and requisite development. What this means, essentially, is the A's are one step closer to moving to the 'burbs. Just call 'em the Soccer Mom Team.

You know, if last fall wasn't exactly a great time for Bay Area sports, this spring, especially this weekend, has to be considered a great moment. We listened to Gary Radnich this morning and he was complaining about not having anything to complain about.

We gobble the various food sections up each Wednesday. These are our favorite tidbits from today's offerings:

-A woman's car breaking down caused a huge chain of events leading to her death and three hours worth of traffic on the upper deck of the Bay Bridge. -Where oh where did the snow go?

We have no illusions anyone's going to read this column today what with all this news about Gavin Newsom's affair with his campaign manager's wife -- but we soldier on nonetheless.

We don't know about you, but it seemed like the temperature dropped about ten degrees in an hour or so yesterday. In fact, the day started off rather nicely but then the wind started whipping around and we went from comfortably cold to comfortably numb. The reason for all this is that we are in the midst of a cold spell right now. And it's going to get colder. Like in the 20s colder.

-Joe Thornton and Jonathan Cheechoo will start in the NHL All Star game. -The Giants already start working on their tribute to the 2002 Giants by signing Russ Ortiz. Hey, what's Shawn Estes doing these days?

-The Rai-duhs are going to take their time looking for a new coach which is code for "find somebody desperate enough to take the job." The Betting Fool wallows in the Raiders' misery.

While most of us were either not working or goofing off at work last week, Gavin stepped up and sent the 49ers yet another proposal to keep the team from moving. This proposal? How's about building a new stadium at the Hunters Point Naval Yard. The Niners were nonplussed.

Pot growing in the wild! Marin County has vowed to crack down on marijuana growers who have been sneaking onto state and federal public property to plant over $100 million worth of weed. The pot is located on both sides of Bolinas Ridge, and Point Reyes National Seashore says they spent over $10,000 to clean it all up. Authorities report seeing one plant that was 10 feet tall and covered with so many buds the stalk ran parallel to the ground.

It's been All Quiet on the Stadium Front lately but just recently, the San Jose Mercury News got their grubby little hands on a whole bunch of complaints the 49ers have filed with the city of San Francisco. Lots of things falling, things flooding, and things breaking.

-49ers prepare for tonight's game and hope they do better with less practice. The Seahawks, however, are healthy. -Was Nolan's fourth-and-inches whimp out the turning point of the season?
