But you'd be hard-pressed to find any evidence of that; tracking Muni's route changes is an exercise in outdated memos and record-keeping that's so spotty you might as well call it "record-losing."

So what's the current situation with the 54-Felton? We're not asking that rhetorically, we really want you, readers, to clue us in. In your experience, is it running on Third street, like our informant says it's supposed to? Or is it bypassing Third for Newhall, like Muni claims? Gee whiz, it sure would be nice if we could trust the routes that Muni has posted on its site ... but we can't.

"Re-routed via Newhall (until further notice)" says Muni's April 7 Major Permanent Service Change about the 54. In fact, Muni's own description of the route still indicates that it runs along Newhall. Meanwhile the nearly-always-incorrect 511.org shows the route running along Third, like it did before; and it has a confusing schedule that seems to describe a different route altogether -- in fact, 511 has no record that the "Major Permanent Change" ever even happened. Muni's service alerts, meanwhile, aren't organized by date or by line -- as far as we can tell, they're not organized by , and are arbitrarily removed from the site with no rhyme or reason.

After the fracas, they detained four of the assailants but let them go. As of right now, nobody has been arrested as police are saying they're still collecting evidence. They also didn't take pictures, although people at the party did. None of this is standard police practice which is why people are thinking they might be protecting the assailant Rich Aicardi's family.

Meanwhile, the deal is big enough that the President of Yale weighed in to say he was "shocked" by all of this and members of the choir's families have hired the lawfirm of Gonzalez & Leigh. Matier & Ross also go on to say that even though the kids have to come back and deal with it, most of them are really scared of coming back.

Now the people involved, mainly the people hosting the party. This wasn't your standard couple, they're people both with connections to the SFPD. The couple were Reno Rapagnani, a retired SFPD lawyer, and his wife, Leanna Dawydiak. Dawydiak is a decorated San Francisco Police officer and was Commissioner on the San Francisco Delinquency Prevention Commission amongst other things. In other words, she's a slightly big fish. She also ran for the Board of Supervisors in 2004. As for Rapagnani, he at various times worked on the bomb squad and was one of Art Agnos' bodyguards. He was awarded seven medals of valor.

Their big claim to fame, however, was during FaijitaGate. During the investigation, the two of them went public accusing the police department of withholding certain things to investigators. At the same time, a memo was leaked to the press that made the SFPD look bad and the SFPD tried to crack down on whoever was leaking the memos, in somewhat questionable ways and accused Dawydiak and Rapagnini of leaking the memos in something someone called as a “witch hunt.” Both sued to try and clear their names, which they were. Still, what happened to them is reverberating around as the police were caught doing all sorts of things they shouldn't have done and nobody seems to care.

Now all of this could mean something. All of this could mean nothing-- sometimes a coincidence is a coincidence. As we said, it's a small city. Still, we don't think this story is going to die down anytime soon.

Chaos at the Chron

Layoffs, health insurance cuts and a new cooking school director for the Chron.

Arts & Entertainment

Chron

cooking

ferry building

SF Restaurants, Food & Drink

health

health care

Hearst Corp

layoffs

media

Media Workers Guild

memos

money

SF News

News+Sports

rumors

San Francisco

San Francisco Chronicle

Bay Area Sports

While SFist

jackson

SFist has been sitting on some insider dope regarding shakeups at the San Francisco Chronicle. It's a delicate situation, because we don't want to compromise our sources, but we want to inform you about some of the trials and tribulations behind the scenes - none of which are likely to improve the paper in the long run. Thankfully, the Examiner made everything public.

First, we reported on the shakeup at the sports desk. We had also heard rumors at the time about potential layoffs, but couldn't confirm them independently. Now the news has been leaked that fifty managers and a large number of support staff will be let go. The full memo contains this quote from publisher Publisher Steve Falk, who calls the 10% reduction in non-union staff as "only the beginning of what must be radical changes to our cost structure."

The Media Workers Guild, which represents the writers at the Chron, also recently issued a bulletin to members letting them know that there will be deep cuts to their health coverage and increased employee payments for the reduced services. A two million dollar trust fund that had been set up in the nineties to help buffer against health care cost volatility has now been almost entirely depleted. The contract between the Media Workers Guild and the publisher, Hearst Corp., expires next July, and you can expect this to come up in negotiations as a major grievance.

On a lighter note, Thy Tran has been named director of the Chronicle Cooking School at the Ferry Building. SFist wonders why the Chron is pouring money into what some might consider a vanity project unless it's been profitable. While SFist loves the food section and thinks it's one of the few in the country worth reading, we'd really rather see the newspaper using their resources to, uh, cover news. But that's just our opinion.
