The Chronicle points out that massively dangerous waves are making the ocean incredibly dangerous and deadly to go into, or even near. “We really want to hammer home that beaches will be very dangerous,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Nicole Sarment told the Chronicle. “People should really not even go.”

But that is music to the ears of surfers who converge from around the world to participate in the Mavericks surfing festival in Half Moon Bay. They started arriving around Christmas, but Thursday is the day they’re expecting the biggest waves, with KGO reporting via the National Weather Service that the waves are expected to be as high as 30 feet. (The Chronicle notes that the notorious break at Mavericks, in these conditions, can see waves of 50 feet or higher.) Mavericks does not have a set calendar date, it can generally happen anytime between November 1-March 31, whenever those tasty waves hit their highest highs — no matter how dangerous the conditions.

TONIGHT: Pro surfers have traveled from all over the world to ride massive & powerful waves at Northern CA's legendary Mavericks. Indeed, Stanley has saved surfers’ lives on his jet-ski, not only saving them from the enormous, deadly waves, but also from great white sharks.

Mavericks is no longer a surfing competition. It used to be, once known as Titans of Mavericks and at one point sponsored by Red Bull. But Titans of Mavericks went bankrupt in 2017, and canceled the competition that year. So now it is simply an informal event, but the top big-wave surfers from around the world still descend on Half Moon Bay for what are considered some of the best and most challenging surfing conditions on earth.

"We spend our lives to be here for these moments, and all the training and the work and the practice and the backup safety networks that we create are all for these moments,” Stanley said to KGO. “And it's amazing when we get to experience that."

If you want to watch the Mavericks surfers, you’re free to head to Half Moon Bay and do so, but you’d better take some binoculars. Regular civilians are not allowed too close to the beach because of the dangerous conditions — and the break actually occurs quite a distance offshore, requiring jet skis to get to it. But if you want to scope out a spot to watch, it’s actually a little north of Half Moon Bay near Pillar Point Harbor in a village called Princeton-by-the-Sea.
As Stanley narrates to SFGate, "As it came up, it rolled over on its side to look at me with its giant, dark eye. And I could see scars and cuts all down its body, like teeth scars. From all my 'Shark Week' watching expertise, I knew that it was a female." The detail there, per SFGate, is that females often end up with such scarring while mating, because the marine animal kingdom is brutal.

Stanley adds, "The trippiest thing about the whole encounter was the way it was looking at me. It looked into my eyes. We made eye contact."

The Mavericks surf competition looks to be not happening for the third year in a row, but that doesn't mean the surfing hasn't been good at the famous break.

Waves have been seen at the break near Pillar Point as high as 50 or 60 feet, though recent surf heights have reportedly been smaller than that, and today they're peaking at around 10 feet, according to Surfline.

Mavericks came close to happening on December 17 but got pushed back when a storm moved in and caused the waves to get too massive. Swell or no swell, there will be no Mavericks this year. Following the news this week that organizers had filed for bankruptcy protection amid some outstanding debts and a lawsuit from sponsor Red Bull, the big-wave surfing competition has been officially canceled, as the New York Times is reporting.

This also means that the first year that the competition was going to feature women is a no-go.

Filing for bankruptcy is Cartel Management, headed by sometime record producer Griffin Guess and his supermodel wife Marissa Miller, and they said last week in a statement that they were looking to sell Titans of Mavericks, the brand and the not-annual competition, claiming that the Chapter 11 filing was "the culmination of a strategy designed to implement a sale of the assets and intellectual property of the companies to afford a buyer certain protections available only in bankruptcy."

Despite the fact that Cartel is apparently indebted to vendors and contractors to the tune of $1.9 million, with Titans of Mavericks also $776,335 in the hole, Guess doubles down on the news about the buyer in a statement to the Times, saying, "The bankruptcy filing came after having had several conversations with multiple interested parties who were looking at an acquisition that could happen quickly, with a minimum of legal complications."

Mavericks founder Jeff Clark, himself a well known big-wave surfer, seems to be calling bullshit on that, telling the Times that the three-year relationship the event has had with Cartel has been a mistake. "We thought they were the right fit for us, but they brought their own problems and are now going bankrupt," he said, adding, "Our primary focus has always been to support the men and women who surf Mavericks and to preserve the sanctity of the wave and support our local community. We have sacrificed much to create a stage for the world’s best big wave surfers. We are disappointed.”

Sabrina Brennan, head of the San Mateo County Harbor Commission which oversees the Pillar Point surf area near Half Moon Bay where Mavericks has taken place 10 times since 1999 — only in years when the biggest swells arrive between November and March — tells the Times that the current situation isn't exactly surprising. "This event has been plagued with problems since its inception," she said. "Trying to generate revenue from an event like Mavericks is a challenge. You need a more organized and committed group of people to pull it off."

Some surfers were apparently already in town awaiting the event, and hanging out in Half Moon Bay — especially after hearing about the 30-foot swells that were happening two weeks back. And now they are sad.

Conditions have to be just right for Titans of Mavericks, the world-famous, 1999-founded surf competition at Pillar Point Harbor near Half Moon Bay. There's no fixed date or guarantee the contest will go down every year. But when the waves are ideal sometime between November and March, organizers notify the world's best surfers, giving them just 24 to 48 hours to haul ass to Mavericks.

But last week, despite ideal-seeming swells, no such call went out, worrying surfers. NBC Bay Area discovered that the delay, which could be indefinite, was prompted by financial woes. Documents obtained by the news channel show the two competition organizers, Cartel Management Inc. and Titans of Mavericks LLC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy yesterday.

Cartel, whose co-owners are Titans of Mavericks founder Griffin Guess and his wife Marissa Miller, a model famous for her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue appearances, lost a $1 million lawsuit in Los Angeles late last year for failure to promote a sunless tanning product and salon. The dispute over Cartel's assets uncovered unpaid bills and unpaid contest permits.

There's also another lawsuit, this one with former sponsor Red Bull, who have live-streamed the event in the past. Red Bull Media House North America filed its lawsuit against Cartel just last Friday, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, citing breach of contract and unjust enrichment.

In the fall, organizers revealed this year's planned Mavericks competition was to be the first in its history to feature women surfers. "[It] feels great knowing they know want us to be apart of this rad big-wave community,” SF surer Bianca Valenti said at the time. Now it's unlikely they'll have the chance, although women regularly surf swells off Pillar Point Harbor.

San Mateo County Harbor commissioner Sabrina Brennan told NBC Bay Area she was unsurprised by the bankruptcy filing, wagering that "there will not be a contest this year." That's a shame, says Brennan: "A lot of surfers, men and women, worked very hard to get ready for this contest... it's a real letdown to hear about these financial problems."

This morning, Cartel issued a statement to the San Jose Mercury News claiming that the bankruptcy process is "intended to preserve value and accommodate an orderly going-concern sale of its business operations.” From that statement:

Since 2014, up to $3 million has gone into developing the brand and staging the annual event, which features the world’s best surfers competing on waves that can reach 60 feet. The Chapter 11 filings by Titans of Mavericks and Cartel Management represent the culmination of a strategy designed to implement a sale of the assets and intellectual property of the companies to afford a buyer certain protections available only in bankruptcy. Titans of Mavericks intends for such a sale to ensure a smooth and swift transition of the business and operations.

According to the Mercury News, Cartel also owes $280,000 to Fox sports and $6,000 to the San Mateo Harbor District as part of a government Contract. In all, there are 49 creditors with liabilities listed between $1 million and $10 million. If that's the culmination of a strategy, it was a bad strategy.

The famed Mavericks surf competition down near Half Moon Bay, which held its tenth event in February since being founded in 1999, will be welcoming female competitors for the first time when and if the the competition happens this season. As KRON 4 reports, six female competitors will be selected and announced November 1, which is the first day that the window of opportunity for Mavericks will open.

The big-wave surfing event, officially known as Titans of Mavericks, announced the first time ever Women's heat in a tweet last week.

#titansofmavericks is proud to announce the Women's Division of the 2016/17 season. #waterwomen #titans pic.twitter.com/mliNHliqyK
— Titans of Mavericks (@titansofmavs) October 19, 2016

Mavericks, as you may know, doesn't happen every year because it's dependent on there being a particularly large and consistent swell between November and March.

And as KQED tells us, "Women have never competed in the 15-year history of the event, although several women regularly surf where the competition is held off Pillar Point."

San Francisco surfer Bianca Valenti told Surfer Mag that this announcement came earlier than expected, since organizers had originally said they would be having the first women's heat in the 2017-18 season. "I wasn’t expecting this. But I think it’s awesome. I’m just excited to see the women’s side of the sport strengthen. It felt weird always asking for them to let us women in. So it feels great knowing they know want us to be apart of this rad big-wave community.”

As always, the competition will be announced with just 24 to 48 hours notice, and the 24 competitors then have to high-tail it from all corners of the world to participate.

It wasn't the biggest, gnarliest, most dramatic Mavericks there ever was, but 2016's Titans of Mavericks big-wave surfing competition wrapped up Friday with more than a few wipeouts and only one winner. Nic Lamb, a 28-year-old surfer who grew up in Santa Cruz and now calls Venice Beach home, won the top prize in the prestigious competition, besting 23 elite competitors and taking home the $120,000 top prize, as well as the biggest of the three wave trophies you can see below.

All three top finishers among the international array of competitors were local California boys too, so that's rad.

Lamb won despite a wipeout, and as he said to ABC 7, "Any time this wave breaks, it is life or death, man vs. nature. Mount Everest meets Niagara Falls." He's been surfing Mavericks since he was 14 and said after winning, "I'm elated. I'm over the moon."

Waves on Friday began at around 15 feet and grew to 30 or 40 feet during the day, making it a great day for the competition though perhaps not as perfect as the swells seen last week that had to be passed over because of a certain football game we shall not speak of ever agin.

Below, some raw video ABC 7 posted with some goofy Creative Commons surf music as background.

Also getting to surf, kind of by surprise, was San Francisco Fire Department paramedic Travis Payne, 31. The New York Times explains:

The field of 24 was narrowed to 12 semifinalists by lunchtime. Six made the finals. Among them were Brazil’s Carlos Burle, the 2008 winner Greg Long, and Travis Payne, a 31-year-old San Francisco Fire Department paramedic who has been surfing Mavericks since he was a teenager. He was the first alternate on the invite list until a competitor pulled out on Thursday night.

Payne ended up coming in second place, and here he is below, coming off a wave and looking pretty stoked.

Finalists were judged on their two best waves, with their best scoring double. Finishing third was another Californian, Greg Long originally of San Clemente,* who won the "biggest drop" award but who also suffered a spectacular wipeout in the third heat, as seen below.

There were plenty of wipeouts, including a major one early on by frontrunner Ken Collins. Collins had to withdraw from the competition after nearly drowning after falling down a 30-foot face. Were it not for his inflatable life vest, he might not be alive. "It felt like the whole ocean landed on me," he said, as the Mercury-News reports. "It blew my eardrum wide open. I thought it was a concussion at first. Water was going inside my head and down my throat."

And once again, spectators couldn't get anywhere nearby to watch — no one is allowed on the nearby bluff or beach anymore after a rogue wave took out 13 spectators during the 2010 competition.

This was the 10th ever Mavericks competition in the 17 years since it began, requiring, as it does, high surf and perfect conditions, which this El Nino winter brought us in spades.

Until next year... maybe.

As you know, the Mavericks surf competition is going on right freakin' now. Even if you didn't have to work, it would be hard to watch it in person, as your only option is to watch from binoculars from a distance.

Or you can watch it online, here <strike>or below</strike>! (Update: According to an email sent to SFist by Raechel Ball with Red Bull Media House, "There was a momentary glitch in the player that allowed the embed code to be unlocked for a short time period." So, apparently, you'll have to go to their site to watch it.)

As previously reported, there are inbound swells predicted of 16 feet or higher, but the unique topography of the oceanfloor at Mavericks could push waves up to 25 to 30 feet, with the occasional breaker topping the 35-foot mark. (Commentators, though, are saying this year's waves aren't the biggest they've ever seen, and are kind of modest in size.)

This is the 10th time the competition will be held since its founding in 1999. When it's called, as it was on Tuesday, professional surfers from around the world drop everything and fly to the Bay Area to participate.

Much like there was last Thursday, there are inbound swells predicted of 16 feet or higher based on some readings of buoys near Hawaii, due here by the end of the week. Only this time, the Super Bowl won't trump it.

Per the Chron:

Drew Peterson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said that area is forecast to see waves between 13 and 14 feet on Friday, but the unique topography of the oceanfloor at Mavericks could push waves up to 25 to 30 feet, with the occasional breaker topping the 35-foot mark.

As discussed earlier, the 1999-founded big-wave surfing competition will hold its 10th contest this year, assuming the waves come together, after skipping 2015 due to a lack of big waves. When the competition is called, professional surfers from around the world drop everything and fly to the Bay Area to participate. (See pictures from the 2014 competition here.)

Spectators tend to have view the event through binoculars from the shore, however in the past it's been televised from AT&T Park as well. There will be a live, Redbull-sponsored webcast here starting at 8 a.m. on Friday.

Back in early January, waves at Mavericks — a break that's about a mile off shore near Half Moon Bay — hit 50 feet, but at the time weather made the conditions too gnarly for the competition.

Currently, the whole Pacific is alive with action, which is leading to another non-annual surf competition in Hawaii's Waimea Bay, the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau, being called for Wednesday. This is the first time that competition, which requires waves of greater than 20 feet, has been held since 2009.

As discussed back in January, the big-wave surfing competition now known as Titans of Mavericks has been on the horizon for weeks now — each year organizers monitor the swells and call the competition with just 24 to 48 hours notice, in which participants have to fly in from wherever they may be in the world. But a perfect swell arrived Thursday and organizers were forced to delay, as KRON 4 reports, because of the goddamned Super Bowl.

The waves were steady and 23 feet and higher on Thursday, and perfect for holding the competition according to local surfers and Surfline.com, however local safety officials are all tied up with Super Bowl weekend and therefore there was an imposed blackout on Mavericks for these dates.

As surfer Cyrus Roe explained, "Mavericks is a serious wave, [and] it’s world renowned, and it’s a mile out there, so it’s good to have the Coast Guard and all the support teams available just to keep the athletes safe."

Per CBS 5, organizers say they are "confident" that the competition will get held in the next month and a half, before the window for it closes on March 31.

There has not been a Mavericks competition since 2014, because wave patterns never materialized last year, as they don't in some years. This year will be the 10th time the competition has been held since it began in 1999.

We mentioned Friday that the Mavericks big-wave surf competition, now known as Titans of Mavericks, could get called any time in the next few weeks — according to the four-color alert legend on the site, we're currently at swell level orange. Some big-wave surfers have already congregated near Half Moon Bay and have gone out to practice on some huge inbound El Nino waves in the last week, and one of them, Garrrett “GMAC” McNamara, was injured in a crazy wipeout that was caught on camera Thursday.

ABC 7 shows us the video several times over during the news segment above, and in it you can see the tiny figure of McNamara plummet down the face of the 50-foot wave, hitting the water three time before getting pummeled by the crashing wave. He broke his arm and also injured his shoulder in the fall, but the 48-year-old surfing legend says, "Surfing is my life. It's my passion. It's what I love to do. And, I will never stop surfing."

Mavericks, the invitation-only competition, will almost definitely have its tenth outing this season, it's just a matter of when. The contest only gets called after organizers observe a worthy swell over several days at the break. In the 16 years that the competition has been running, it has only been called nine previous times.

The tenth edition of the famed, invitation-only Mavericks surf competition, now dubbed Titans of Mavericks, will most definitely happen during this stormy El Nino winter, it's just a matter of when as organizers closely watch the swells arriving off the coast of Half Moon Bay. The competition doesn't happen every year and is dependent on the way the waves shape up — there hasn't been one since 2014, given how quiet and dry a winter we had last year. But as organizers presaged via Instagram last week, and as the Chronicle reports, waves have been hitting 50 feet at Mavericks this week and seasoned big-wave surfers are already out there practicing on them. Though the gnarly factor is, reportedly, very high.

In fact, as the Chron reported this morning, one surfer has already been injured.

Garrrett “GMAC” McNamara, 48, wiped out massively on Thursday and had to undergo emergency surgery, from which he's now recovering.

The big waves occur around a break that's two miles off the Northern California coast at Pillar Point, and they form during the rough winter season due to a unique geological formation under the water — a ramp that slopes upwards on the ocean floor and creates unusually massive waves at this spot that can be as high as 80 feet, in a V- or U-formation.

The contest was founded long before Apple named an operating system update after it, back in 1999, though professional surfers had been making pilgrimages to the break since the mid-90s — locals had known about it, and surfed it, as early as the 1960s, but the prevailing wisdom for decades was that California didn't have any big waves. Each year organizers plan for it between November and March, and the competition only gets called when the swells are deemed perfect. Thus it's only happened nine times over 16 years. 24 surfers are invited to participate, and the last winner in 2014 was South African surfer Grant Baker who had previously won in 2006.

The one-day competition gets called with only 24 to 48 hours notice, in which competitors fly in from wherever they may be around the globe, and fans rush to watch. Like last time, it should be broadcast on a big screen at AT&T Park when it happens.

Two people have died surfing Mavericks: Mark Foo in 1994, and Sion Milosky, an accomplished big-wave surfer who drowned after a two-wave hold down in 2011, during a year when no contest was held.

Not wanting to get thrown around on the boat that was about to get knocked with a huge wave, surfer Mark Healey — who is also a stunt man — took a flying leap off the deck and into the wave, as you can see in the video above.

As Fox News notes, the video was shot in December at Mavericks, the famed surf break near Half Moon Bay, and recently uploaded to Facebook. Healey explained to Fox and Friends that he was on the fishing boat and "didn't feel like getting smashed around like an ice cube in a shaker," as the wave approached. "So I looked to my friends to the left and right of me and just told them, 'I don't know about you guys, but I'm jumping.'"

He added, "My friends on the jet skis who picked me up were like basically crying laughing at me. I came up pretty much dying laughing, and then I checked to make sure everybody was OK on the boat. There was some damaged equipment - soaked cameras - but everybody was pretty much in good shape."

The Mavericks big wave surfing competition did not happen this year for lack of ideal conditions. Here are photos from the last one, in January 2014.

Photos: Big Waves, Big Wipeouts At Mavericks

The Mavericks Invitational big wave surfing competition went off without a hitch today. The Mavericks Invitational big wave surfing competition went off without a hitch today. The ninth edition of the occasional contest, which only runs when conditions are ideal, saw waves cresting at more than 40 feet, which led to more than one spectacular wipeout.

Today's contest went on for seven hours of surfing, but 40-year-old South African Grant "Twiggy" Baker — who also won the contest back in 2006 — came out victorious with two perfect-scoring 10-point rides.
