The Week That Was:
Won 2, lost 1 against the Padres.
Won 1, lost 3 against the Marlins.

38-37 for the season; 2nd place in the NL West.

The Week That Will Be:
Mon: at Los Angeles against the Dodgers
Tue: at Los Angeles against the Dodgers
Wed: at Los Angeles against the Dodgers
Thu:	OFF
Fri: at Colorado against the Rockies
Sat: at Colorado against the Rockies
Sun: at Colorado against the Rockies

Last Thursday night, the Miami Heat beat the San Antonio Spurs in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Tens of thousands of people, along with all four Miami Heat fans, stormed the streets and celebrated in South Beach. 3100 miles away in San Francisco, as another Miami team played in another South Beach, the final score of the basketball game was announced and 40,000 boos rained down from the stands at PacBell Park. The Marlins then went on to beat the Giants.

Winning baseball games is hard. Winning four straight against the same team is almost asking too much. But if it must be done, it should be done against the Marlins. They're garbage. That's not biased opinion — it's science. They rank at or near the bottom of every meaningful offensive category. They draw the fewest fans of all 30 teams, and for good reason — their win/loss record is 25-50, the worst in all of baseball. And their owner? The Worst!

These were the Marlins, damnit! From Miami! At least win three of them? Split it 2-2? No? Just one? God, I hate Miami.

Winning baseballs games is hard. Winning three straight on the road is almost asking too much. But if it must be done, please let it be against the Dodgers. The Dodgers may not be garbage, but they're stinking it up something awful, which, to my nose, smells like a bouquet of perfumed roses. You may remember that the story going into this baseball season was the resurrection of the Dodgers franchise. After years of neglect and mismanagement by a derelict owner, the Dodgers got fancy new owners who flashed fancy new cash and the Dodgers were once again very, very LA. That's what the story was, anyway. The reality, it turns out, is so much happier. They've been keeping last place warm the entire season. Their manager is about two innings away from getting fired. Their stock has fallen and it really is quite nice.

But before we get too smug, let's remember the Giants have won exactly one game more than they have lost. The Giants are tied with the Rockies for 2nd place, with the Padres 0.5 games behind. Even the last place Dodgers are only 5.5 games behind the Giants. The standings of the NL West can be figuratively flipped on its head in one week's time. The Giants know this. Six road games against two division rivals — it's time to make a stand.

Bartender, the Giants will have the Dodgers on the Rocks, please. Let's drink.

Et cetera: to my nephew, welcome to the world, kid! Being a Giants fan is gonna be a helluva thing.

Marlins Sweep Giants

Ugh.
Ugh. The Marlins won this afternoon, effectively sweeping the Giants. What a horrific series. Please go home now, Florida. You've done enough. We don't hate you. We know now you didn't mean it. It's just... please leave and allow us to heal. We're so very, very tender here in San Francisco.

As far as yesterday's Posey collision goes, it was all part of baseball, folks. During a pre-game press conference, Bruce Bochy explained:

It's part of baseball. I understand that. Guys run into catchers. Being a catcher, I've been in a few of them. You're in harm's way there. I do think we need to consider changing the rules a little bit because the catcher's so vulnerable -- and there are so many who've gotten hurt, and just a little bit. I mean, they've had their careers or shortened. And here's a guy that's very popular in baseball. Fans want to see him play. Now, he's out for a while. I'd like to see maybe something considered here where we can protect these guys a little bit more. They just don't have the protection to take a guy coming in full speed, with that kind of force. But, it's part of the game. He had two paths to go; he could have gone for home plate, but he elected to try to knock the ball loose, even though Buster had dropped the ball.

On the brighter side, it's still early in the season. So quit your bellyaching. Giants take on the Milwaukee Brewers, Friday, May 27.

This morning it was Timmy but now SFGate is saying it's Cain. Either way, our opinion is this-- hell to the noes.

Here's the thing-- Alex Rios is a really good player (.297 average, 24 homers, 85 RBIs, 114 runs scored and 17 stolen bases), he's young (27), and relatively cheap. The problem is that he's merely a really good player while Lincecum and/or Cain have the potential to be really great players. In other words, it's not really a fair trade. Put it another way: while somebody on the Giants has to hit over .250, Rios isn't really going to help the team that much. The end result is that the only thing the Giants will accomplish is taking a really bad offense and making it just bad while taking a potentially amazingly good pitching staff and making it just a good pitching staff. Remember too, they still sucked last year despite having Barry. Rios isn't quite Barry

This doesn't mean we're predisposed to trading either Tim or Matt. Desperate times call for desperate measures and if there's ever a time for desperate baseball measures, it's now. The only trade we'd go for, however, is one in which the Giants get more than just one player but more like a handful of players. Like putting together some sort of package to get something like the Marlins pulled off. This team needs more than one bat; it needs a whole lot of bats. If they can swing a trade for either pitcher, it better be for enough players to turn the team around. Alex Rios ain't gonna turn anything around.

And we ain't the only ones who think so.

Besides, Cain's our favorite player and if he goes, we're going to be PISSED.

Giants 8 Marlins 7- Again, we have no statistics to back us up, but it seems like Giants team after Giants team goes down to that humid, plastic, empty stadium in Miami and dies. We can’t remember a good series the Giants had down there. But finally, the worst Giants team of the past fifteen (twenty?) years appears to have gotten one over the Fish by taking a four game series. About four years too late if you ask us. Hell, ten years too late. Anyways, a real live pennant race is coming to the Phonebooth tonight as the Giants play host to the Cubs who are involved in that threeway race for the NL Central crown. You can't be any sort of baseball fan and not by psyched by the prospect of a pennant race between the Cubs, Cards, and the Milwaukee Brewers. And as we kind of like the Cubs being loveable losers and hate Tony LaRussa, we're hoping the Giants continue with their winning ways and help the rumblin', stumblin' Brew Crew out.

A's 6 Jays 4- Your A's hero of the game? Slammin' Jack Hannahan who hit his first home run ever in the third, a three run jobber. Hannahan is yet one more in the A's continuing season-long saga of "Who the Hell Are These Guys?" Beane's made a bunch of big, sort of splashy signings over the past few years (Mike Piazza anyone) yet the guys who've been doing it for the A's are guys we're not even sure Beane thought would do much. Athletic's Nation sums it up best, calling this A's team "the Misfits." And, hey, those Misfits are now just two games away from .500.
Messenger is pretty non-descript as a pitcher except for the fact he's 6' 6". The deal probably had to be made as the pitchfork brigade was banging on the door and demanding heads and some of those people holding pitchforks were fellow teammates. In a way, the whole thing is like when the Giants got rid of Livian Hernandez after the 2002 World Series, not necessarily because he was a bad pitcher, but because Giants fans were so ticked off by his blowing Game 7 that the Giants had to get rid of him. It also makes the series against the Marlins in July suddenly interesting because it could be Giants' fans first opportunity to kiss their favorite reliever goodbye.

Anyways, Brad Hennessey will be the new closer and we can dig it.

As for the game, once again Matt Cain was the recipient of some bad Giants O as they only got three hits and two runs. We finally dealt with it. In fact, you can look at our postings over the past month as our going through the Four Stages of Grief. When they won five in a row, there was denial. When Benitez blew that save, there was anger. Afterwards, bargaining as we still thought they had a chance. And now? Total acceptance. Blissful, happy, zen-like acceptance. We are so ready for some football.

Truth is, this breakup has been building for a while now. Ever since Dusty and Jeff Kent skedaddled and Sabaen built the team anew, we've had issues with the team. Sure, 2003 was fun and the playoff series against the Marlins a Grade heartbreak, but we never really fell in love with that team. But after that, we have to admit to the fact we never really liked the Giants. Oh, we liked "the Giants," but we had trouble liking the actual team out there that played. Edgardo Alfonso? A.J. Pierzynski? Michael Tucker? Double feh. As a friend of ours put it about his general apathy towards the Felipe-era Giants, there wasn't really anyone on the team to like. The teams were a collection of aging, mostly forgettable free agents, guns for hire who came in and out of our baseball lives without leaving much in the way of a mark in our baseball loving heart.

And it's not like we didn't get into them because they were mainly bad teams, it's just that the teams were both bad and boring. Even worse, they played really bad baseball. Just dumb, stupid, frustrating baseball, a baseball that would neither satisfy the Beane loving Statheads or the purists: runners never got advanced, batters never showed patience, pitchers threw the wrong pitch at the wrong time. Just dumb-ass baseball. The only consistency to the team was a complete inability to stop doing all the bad things they were doing. Sure, the Barry Show was entertaining but that was pretty much it in the way exciting baseball.

No, it's taken us a long time, much longer than a lot of people, but we're finally where most of the fans are. In terms of what we want this franchise to do, we want them to blow the motherf----- up.

Last year, he left for undisclosed "personal reasons" (juicy rumor of which you can find here) only to reemerge later to pitch with the D-Backs. And pitched rather well we might add.

This means the Giants now have a plethora of set up men to choose from, a potpourri of pitching from the 'pen, as he joins Benitez, Hawkins, and Walker. All are steady, all have experience closing, all have proven success elsewhere, and all nobody would ever call lights out. And all are right-handers. With Scott Eyre gone, the only left-handed reliever the Giants now have is rookie Jack Taschner.

Also in Giants news, Sabaen has said they are still chasing starting pitcher Matt Morris, ex of the Cards. We'd put our money on them getting him too as he's the perfect Giant- past his prime, cheap, oft-injured, and with just enough hint of occasional brilliance to make you go "hey, this might work."
Like the unknown gem of Giants' food fare, the Sheboygan, a grease drenched, grilled to perfection brat that's totally unhealthy, totally greasy, and totally yum.

We also realized that in the midst of the dreariness of this season, all the hand-wringing about attendance might just not be necessary. Because on a beautiful, sunny, warm day, the ballpark was still packed to the rafters and you could feel what everyone else felt-- that on a day such as that, <s>Pac Bell</s> SBC Park is still one of the most beautiful places on God's green earth.

This week is an important week for the orange and black as next Sunday is the trading deadline (you can still make trades in August, but it's much more complicated and involves waiver wires and we have no idea what any of it means). The whole central dilemma of this season, whether a buyer or seller be, all comes down to what happens this week. The good news for the Giants is that they're playing in the worst division in baseball and the first-place Padres, currently mired in a seven game losing streak, are doing everything possible to throw the division away.
