Fortunately, as a response boat from the Coast Guard Station was performing "training evolutions" in the Bay, they noticed the boat sinking, went into action, and rescued the four fishermen. No injuries were sustains.

However, the boat, carrying a possible 300 gallons of diesel fuel, is currently submerged under the Bay. Check it:

The vessel is currently submerged beneath the water, and carries a maximum of 300 gallons of diesel fuel onboard. The Coast Guard will continue to assess the surrounding water for pollution, and take any steps necessary for cleanup. Coast Guard personnel, and divers from the San Francisco Police Department, were able to move the vessel to the edge of the channel to allow continued use of the waterway.

As of now, the reason for the vessel's sinking is unknown. A 100-yard safety zone has been established around the submerged boat. Just how long it will take for the boat to be removed is also unknown. Stay tuned, folks.

A's Division Rivals Outlaw Same-Sex Smooching

We’ll admit, we’ve been aloof to the A’s and this season’s American League West proceedings, what with the Athletics getting ready to <a href="http://ww...

SF News

A's

banned

baseball

gay

gay stuff. kissing

gays

homophobic

homosexual

Mariners

Oakland

same sex

Seattle

Seattle Mariners

Bay Area Sports

the a's

Tila Tequila

Tila Tequila is a slut

Brock Keeling

(By Joe Kukura)

We’ll admit, we’ve been aloof to the A’s and this season’s American League West proceedings, what with the Athletics getting ready to juke their hometown for Fremont. But oh baby, do we have a new reason to root for the A’s to engage in some serious divisional ass-whooping.

At the division rival Seattle Mariners ballpark, now the Cracker Barrel of organized baseball, it appears they’ll toss you out of the stadium for same-sex kissing. Cleverly-named Seattle lesbian and Tila Tequila show veteran Sirbrina Guerrero found that out the hard way, being asked to leave Safeco Field during a Mariners-Red Sox game for kissing her girlfriend. They weren’t even going at it that hard, she insists. “We were eating garlic fries. The last thing we want to do is make out with each other.” Speak for yourself, Sirbrina. When pressed for comment, stadium officials referred to the ballpark’s code of conduct, which states "displays of affection are not appropriate in a public family setting." We’re not developmental psychologists, but we see a lot in that statement to screw kids up on intimacy issues well into their adult lives.

And just to bring it back to karma… the Seattle ‘Phobes are in last place and nine games behind the A’s.

It's Got to Be the Morning After

Here's todays sports news

SF News

A's

Alex Smith

baseball

Best Actor

Dan Haren

Emmy

football

Giants

James Gandolfini

James Spader

Mariners

new orleans

New Orleans Saints

NFC West

Niners

Norv Turner

Bay Area Sports

The Giants

Jon

For a fanbase with a team that is 2-0 and in first place of the NFC West, Niners fans sure aren't enjoying things. Well, Niners fans can be placed into two groups, the "we're just happy to be here" group and the "my eyes...they burn!" group. Criticism seems to be over their offensive performance which has in a word, kinda sucked. Is Nolan too conservative? Is Alex Smith ready? Is Smith really all that good to begin with? Was last year's offensive improvement just due to Norv Turner? Did James Spader really beat James Gandolfini for "Best Actor in a Dramatic Series?" And what's the over/under on the 49ers getting over 100 yards against the Steely McBeans? We dunno. All we know is that the implosion of the New Orleans Saints is killing us fantasy football and we are NOT happy.

Anyways, in honor of the passing of Brett Somers to the Great Gameshow Panel in the sky, we present the baseball scores all Match Game style.

Now that's an interesting topic of discussion, that being the worst Giants loss of the season. They debated the same thing, sort of, on McCovey Chronicles but we can't remember what led to it. Frankly, Monday night's game was rough, but not that rough, primarily because the Giants are so out of it that at this point, it meant nothing in the grand scheme of things. And out of all the blown saves the Giants have this season, isn't a blown save kind of something that fits into the realm as always a possibility? Oh, how quick we are to forget the big blown game of the season, Armando Benitez's two-balk extravaganza. Sure, it's not like giving up a three run homer with two outs in the ninth, but losing a game in the twelfth inning by balking in the winning run? Now that's losing in style.

You know, we meant to get into the whole "It's Got to Be the Morning After" thing earlier but forgot to do it in all the sports hurly-burly. So, yes, the title comes from the theme song to The Poseidon Adventure by Maureen McGovern. And yes, we're old. So, anyways, if you want to check out the actual song that gave the column it's name and get all "I Love the '70's" with it, check out the video.

PS- and yesterday's It's It's Got to Be the Morning After, Bitch was indeed a shout-out to Ms. Spears, y’all.

49ers 20 Cardinals 17- The opening game of the NFL season is like Christmas and watching the game and checking out the team is like opening presents. If the Raiders are the present that comes from your crazy aunt Sadie who sends you something completely crazy every year, the Niners this year was the present from your cool uncle who kept on telling you for months how great the present was. Well, the packaging might have looked pretty-- the team wore their Old Skool unis, Nolan was decked out in his suit, and ESPN found just which cheerleader to focus in just such a way, the present was kind of meh. All those shiny new offensive toys the Niners were supposed to play with didn’t really work. Gore never got on track, passes were dropped, and Smith didn't look very accurate. On the other hand, Smith had the big play of the game, scrambling for a long run with about a minute left in the game to get a first down. Oh, yeah, the Niners did win with a stirring last minute comeback, but this game was like sitting down for what was billed as an action-packed thriller but getting a slow, character driven movie instead, more Jackie Brown than Pulp Fiction. Still, a win is a win is a win and this is what they call in the biz as a win. Nicely done Red & Gold.

In Raiders news, they finally got around to signing JaMarcus Russell. Nothing like losing to the Detroit Lions to make you see your senses. The deal is the biggest rookie contract in NFL history- $60 million for six years and about half of it guaranteed. The 2008 season is looking up already, Raiders fans.

Dbacks 5 Giants 3- At an intimate gathering among some of their closest friends, the Giants bullpen blew yet another game in yet another fun-filled fashion. Up 3-2 in the ninth, Brad Hennessey gave up a lead-off double, threw a wild pitch, and then walked another batter after getting a couple of outs. With two on and two outs, kiss it goodbye-- Arizona's Jeff Salazar hit a three run home run to take the lead. The Enchanter, btw, was all set to get the win but was Cained yet again.

As 9 M's 3- The A's regained a measure of respect after their Lost Weekend by taking their frustrations out of the free, free-falling (come 'on, everybody sing!) Damage was done by Kurt "Not Ichiro" Suzuki who hit a grand slam and Joe Blanton who won his fifth game out of six. The Mariners have now lost fourteen out of sixteen games and, well, ouch. Thanks to their collapse, as well as the Tigers, we have them to thank for the Yankees getting into the playoffs. Thanks guys.

It's Got to Be the Morning After

Here's todays sports news

SF News

A's

athletics

Athletics Nation

baseball

Braves

Dan Haren

ESPN

Fox

fun

games

Giants

HBO

history

Mariners

Mike Piazza

Nick Swish

Phantom Menace

Bay Area Sports

The A

the game

Jon

Giants 4 Braves 2- You know, the fun thing about this whole Barry chase is that ESPN and Fox are trying to show as many Giants games as possible because nobody knows when the Barry will break the record so as a result, every baseball fan trying to gawk at history are stuck watching a lot of games featuring one of the worst teams in baseball. That includes the press and sold out crowds. When he doesn't hit one or doesn't even play, it's like seeing one of those one-hit wonder bands not play their one-hit. Or it's like, well, we caught part of Phantom Menace on HBO last night and remember how hyped up that movie was? Remember how excited everyone was and how convinced we were that it would possibly be the greatest moment of all of our lives? And remember the crushing disappointment to realize that it was essentially a movie about a whiny child fighting cartoonish robot armies over a trade dispute? Well, that’s what this is all like. Anyways, the Enchanter was pretty darn enchanting with the exception of one gopher ball given up by Jeff Francouer. He's now 6-2 and got his ERA under 4.00 (3.90).

Bad legs and all that. Now, this can't be considered that much of a surprise as Barry can't even deign to show up for team photos. But still, if there's anybody who should be there, it's Barry. It's his house. It's like Springsteen going on tour but not playing New Jersey. It's like Dick Cheney going on a trip to Europe and not going to Transylvania. It's like Steve Miller not going to "Swingtown." Oh yeah, he's got bad legs and all that but it's not like the Giants are in the playoff race so it's not like his missing out a few games due to competing in the Derby would set the team back. The only thing the Giants have left this season is the circus surrounding Barry and the Home Run Derby is about as circus-like as it gets. If you’re doing the circus, you might as go all the way

The M's have to be considered one of the big surprises in the season because, well, nobody thought they'd be any good. Whether or not they have any staying power is a whole other matter, but right now the Mariners are 3 1/2 games ahead of the A's. In game 1 of the series, two long lost A's, Nick Swish and Bobby Crosby both homered as Chad Gaudin picked up his eighth win.
For months and months, the pitching was an impregnable fortress. Now, it's leaking all over the place. The pitcher who got tagged this time was Lenny DiNardo who was done in mainly by Vernon Wells. The good news, however, is that the A's offense is still scoring runs. The even better news is that one of their main competitors in the playoff chase, the Mariners, should be imploding any second know due to their manager stepping down in the midst of an eight game winning streak. Nobody is asking us, but our theory is that the manager, Mike Hargrove, pulled a Costanza and decided to go out on top. You know, always leave them wanting more.

The Giants didn't play last night as they're on their way to Cincinnati to play the Reds, the worst team in the NL. We watched both PTI and Around the Horn yesterday and people on both shows were throwing around crazy conspiracy theories that Barry L's sudden surge of votes at the last minute was cooked up by MLB as a way of having Bonds play the game without him having to be selected by Bud Selig. We called "Loose Change" to see what they think about all this and they said they'll get back to us.
After all, they've won fifteen in a row against the M's. But they turned out to be wrong. The A's lost again, 10-9, in extra innings. Even worse, the A's were up by three in the bottom of the ninth only to watch Houston Street blow the save as the Mariner's rallied to send the game to extra innings.

It was pretty ugly. The Mariners rally in the ninth consisted of a double and a whole bunch of singles. The winning run in the tenth consisted of a lead-off single by Ichiro, a throwing error by pitcher Kiko Calero, and then a two run game-winning single by Willie Bloomquist (as in who?). Ouch.

Obviously, what you have here is a team playing tight. Considering the Angels also won making the magic number still two, blowing the pennant would be unprecedented, but after losing the last three games, we're guessing A's fans are feeling a little queasy right now.
And yes, you might be thinking to yourself that Taco Bell doesn't serve prawn quesidillas but Jon forgot. He still isn't sure what he ate. Since the Giants' keys to victory were so easy to figure out, in his place and writing up today's Giants blurb will be the President of the United States of America, George W. Bush.

See, what the Giants need to do is to win. You have to win to make it to the playoffs. And the Giants? They won. They beat the Arizona Diamondboys 8-2. They have now won two in a row. That's better than losing two in a row. The Giants are now two-back from the Dodgers and tied for third place.

And see, you need pitching to win and the Giants had pitching. Yesterday, Matt Morris did a heckuva job pitching. He pitched the whole game. That means no relief pitchers were used. He's only won two games since April 13th, but he's been pitching much better lately. And the day before, Matt Cain won a game. Matt Cain is a good man. He's a young man. He's a rookie. He pitches with much fastness. And he's wonfour starts out of the last five starts he's started. That's good.

You also need to hit the ball and score some runs. Scoring more runs than the other team helps you win. That Pedro Feliz guy, he's Mexican by the way and he came here to do a job the Giants couldn't find anybody else to do, got four hits and knocked in six runs. He's a RBI'er, see, and that's what he's got to do-- hit RBIs. He's on pace to hit 112 and he's hitting .280. .280 is a good average.

Now I understand some of you are upset with the Giants this year. I know Jon is (we call him Stalker Guy, by the way, because he won't stop calling Jenna). But you have to have faith in Felipe Alou and Brian Sabean. You have to have strength. You have to stay the course and not flip-flop. Alou and Sabean, they're the Deciders and they decide things. We're just going to have to trust them.

Up next for the Giants, the Seattle Mariners. They hate our freedoms.

-Ist-A-Palooza

Phillyist notes a fistfight between local pols that <a href="http://www.phillyist...

SF News

Austinist

Ben Domenech

Bill Gates

Carolyn Kellogg

Chicagoist

Chinese

Chuck

Chuck Schumer

Conan

Dark Kingdom

DCist

divorce

downtown

Features

film

Gothamist

government

history

Houstonist

interview

Jim Genzano

Knicks

LAist

Manhattan

Mariners

mike tyson

MIT

murder

parade

people

Philly

Phillyist

plane

Queen

Red Sox

Seattlest Dan

Senator Chuck Schumer

Shanghaiist

smoking

SXSW

Texas

THANK YOU

Thank You For Smoking

The Chinese

the city

The Knicks

The Washington

The Washington Post

this week

Washington

Washington Post

Wim Wenders

rita

Phillyist notes a fistfight between local pols that leaves one man down for the count. Also two postal workers were held up for their unis and a guy charged with raping another man at swordpoint was found not guilty.

SFist reports that Tomkat was in town to do a Yahoo interview and their readers honor and respect the perfectly normal lovebirds. They also did an interview of their own with Wim Wenders. "Kumquat" is more than just a funny thing to call a small person and a fake Digg entry draws a crowd. And your answer? Randy Winn. Well that and no Barry but was there anyone who didnt see that coming? (side note-- remember those theories out there that Barry was sitting this season out not because he was injured but because it was a way of disappearing when all the heat was on him? Totally buying it).

Anyways, back to the trade because that's the more interesting subject. On Saturday, the Giants traded yet one more once-upon-a-time shining phenom Jesse Foppert and, as he's permanently known in the blogosphere, "alas, poor Yorvit Torrealba", to the Seattle Mariners for outfielder Randy Winn. This despite the fact the last thing the Giants really needed was another outfielder. Especially one not known as being all that. Winn is what they call fantasy tease-- great tools but not so great stats. In fact, the stat heads hate the move as Winn doesn't have gaudy numbers in any of those new fangled math stats Billy Beane made all the rage. There was speculation that Sabean would use the trade for Winn to parlay another move but nothing came of it

Here at A's Brand Baseball, we take no special pleasure in writing that, nor do we do so in order to taunt the other baseball fans and writers on SFist. (OK, maybe a little of the latter.) Rather, we simply want to point out that when the A's won nine of ten games against those two sorry-a$$ teams at the end of June, it didn't necessarily mean much. The home nine continued its hot streak, though, and took two out of three at home from the Chicago White Sox, who still carry the best record in the majors. After Tuesday night's eleven-inning victory over the Blue Jays in Toronto, the A's find themselves with forty-one wins and forty-one losses.

When we wrote that the A's

would need to win 15 of their next 19 just to have a .500 record at the All-Star break, and even we don't expect that,

we weren't trying to work some kind of reverse jinx; it just didn't seem very likely. We were writing about a 29-39 team that had been, on May 29, a 17-32 team and is now, and here's the important part, a 41-41 team on July 6. We didn't expect Rich Harden (1 ER in 19 2/3 innings since returning from the DL) and Bobby Crosby (batting .339 with 5 HR since his return) to rehab with Wilford Brimley and Steve Guttenberg and come back stronger than before. We didn't expect Huston Street to fill in as capably as he has for Octavio Dotel, and we didn't expect Justin Duchscherer--uh, that's 2005 AL All-Star Justin Duchscherer--to fill in as capably as he did for Street. We are happy to have been wrong.

A's Brand Baseball: Do We Hear Three in a Row?

Some might suggest that the A’s only took two of three at the Coliseum this week from the of-all-things-still-major-league-leading Chicago White Sox because the Sox played <a href="http://oakland.athl...

SF News

baseball

chicago

Chicago White Sox

Coliseum

Fashion

games

Jason Kendall

Little League

Major League Baseball

Marco Scutaro

Mariners

News+Sports

Seattle

Seattle Mariners

The White Sox

this week

Wednesday

White Sox

jake

Here at SFist, we think a win is a win is a win and we’ll take those two.
