Here's the letter of apology (.pdf) from Johannes Mehserle, the BART police officer convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Oscar Grant, written on Sunday, July 4, days before the verdict was announced. Here it is in its entirety:

7-4-2010

Mike -

Please try to get this message to the public:

------------------------------

I don't know what the jury in this case is going to decide, but I hope those who hate me and those who understand that I never intended to shoot Oscar Grant will listen to this message.

I have and will continue to live everyday of my life knowing that Mr. Grant should not have been shot. I know a daughter has lost a father and a mother has lost a son. It saddens me knowing that my actions cost Mr. Grant his life, no words express how truly sorry I am.

I hoped to talk to Ms. Johnson (Wanda Johnson, Grant's mother) and Ms. Mesa (Sophina Mesa, Grant's girlfriend and the mother of his daughter) in the days following this terrible event, but death threats toward my newly-born son, my friends and family resulted in no communication occurring. I hope the day will come when anger will give way to dialogue.

Oh wow. Take, for example, the owner of Kezar Pub in the Haight. (Which is a fantastic sports bar, by the way.) It seems a Lakers fan went into the can and tagged the bar's mirror, presumably with pro-Lakers propaganda.

Above is how the owner responded to the tagger's whim. (Bonus points for using a small font size to equate a below average penis. Well played, Kezar.)

Yesterday, if you recall, SFist told you about 64-year-old Yvette Harden, the East Bay women who "fatally shot her handicapped daughter at an East Oakland skilled nursing facility Sunday night then killed herself with the same gun."

At first, no suicide note was found at the scene to explain why Harden did what she did.

This morning, however, SFist received an email from ABC 7's Dan Noyes, telling us that he had received an letter "marked 'urgent' from a viewer in Livermore." The piece of mail was from Harden; it was her suicide note, sent to Noyes a few days before the murder-suicide.

Noyes details what was in the letter. Here's a piece of Harden's reason:

For five pages, Diana Harden described the fifteen-year ordeal she and her daughter endured. Yvette Harden became a quadriplegic and suffered brain injuries in a car accident when she was 28. Her mother admitted she was a difficult patient, but says nursing home workers abused her. Yvette bounced from one nursing home to the next; Diana tried to bring her home and care for her, but the job proved to be too difficult. She finally sent her to Oakland Springs Health Center on 10th Avenue.

Yvette lived there for six years, but Diana wrote that her daughter suffered abuse -- the nurses "tell her she's 'a fat pig' and that they 'hate taking care of her' and they wash her in the shower 'like a car, real hard', then they turn the cold water on to punish her. When she screams, they turn it back before the charge nurse can get there."

We asked Noyes what he felt when he connected his letter with the murder-suicide. He tells us:

Clarion Alley Taggers Respond

On Monday, we posted this angry letter written by mural artists, directed at, if you will, graffiti artists.
Wha wha whaaaa?
