Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr spoke out sharply against President Trump's immigration ban Sunday, calling it "shocking" and characterizing it as a path to even more terror attacks.

Though Kerr's words echoed the dismay and disgust of many against Trump's executive order signed Friday banning entry into the US of all people from seven Muslim-majority nations for at least 90 days, the former NBA player turned coach has a unique perspective on the issue: As written about extensively in a New York Times piece last month, Kerr's father was targeted by and assassinated by terrorists in 1984, while serving as the president of American University in Beirut.

“It’s really simple to demonize Muslims because of our anger over 9/11, but it’s obviously so much more complex than that,” Kerr told the Times in December. “The vast majority of Muslims are peace-loving people, just like the vast majority of Christians and Buddhists and Jews and any other religion. People are people.”

"As easy as it is to demonize people, there’s a lot of different factors involved in creating this culture that we’re in now.”

A year before his dad's slaying, Kerr was trapped in Beirut himself during the summer between high school and his first year at Arizona State.

“There was some question about whether flights would be going out because of everything that was happening,” Kerr said. “We were in the terminal, and all of a sudden there was a blast. It wasn’t in the terminal but on the runways. The whole place just froze. Everybody just froze. People started gathering, saying, ‘We’ve got to get the hell out of here.’ My mom grabbed me, and I remember running out of the terminal and through the parking lot. It was really scary. I remember thinking, ‘This is real.’”

The Kerrs pondered options for getting Steve out. They learned that a private plane of diplomats was going to the United States Marine base and there might be an available seat on the flight back out. Steve spent hours waiting, talking to Marines. In the end, there were no seats. The Kerrs eventually made arrangements for a university driver to take Steve over the mountains, through Syria to Jordan. (The driver, a longtime friend of the family, was killed by a sniper in Beirut in 1985.)

On an early morning in October 1983, a truck bomb destroyed the four-story Marine barracks. Among the dead were 220 Marines and 21 other service members.

“I remember looking at all the photos afterward,” Kerr said. He started to cry. “I see all these, the nicest people, who I met and they were showing us around the base and just trying to do their jobs and keep the peace. And a truck bomb?”

Kerr said he recognized some of the faces of the dead.

“There is a chaplain who had come over and kind of taken us under his wing,” he said. “The nicest guy. And I saw his face. ...”

Kerr wiped his eyes and took a deep breath. “What has it been, 30 years? And it still brings me to tears.”

It's clear that those long-ago experiences have shaped Kerr's perception to this day, as on Sunday night, following the Warriors' 113-111 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, Kerr told assembled members of the press that "As someone whose family member was a victim of terrorism, having lost my father, if we're trying to combat terrorism by banishing people from coming to this country, by really going against the principals of what our country's about and creating fear, it's the wrong way to go about it."

"If anything, we could be breeding anger and terror," Kerr said. "I think it's shocking. I think it's a horrible idea. I feel for all the people who are affected. Families are being torn apart and I worry in the big picture what this means to the security of the world."

Needless to say, Kerr was immediately hit with vile responses via social media, none of which I will include here because people like that don't deserve additional attention. But, also, they are total sad amateur hour compared to what Kerr endured shortly after his dad's slaying at the hands of a group calling itself Islamic Holy War, when on the court playing for the University of Arizona he endured taunts of “P.L.O., P.L.O.,” “Your father’s history,” and “Why don’t you join the Marines and go back to Beirut?”

“When I heard it, I just dropped the ball and started shaking,” Kerr said of the experience.

“I sat down for a minute. I’ll admit they got to me. I had tears in my eyes. For one thing, it brought back memories of my dad. But, for another thing, it was just sad that people would do something like that.”

Kerr, who likely has a greater understanding of the Middle East than some current White House staffers, said in December that American policies have made a bad situation in the area worse.

“To use Colin Powell’s line, ‘If you break it, you own it,’ and now we own it,” Kerr said. “And it’s, like, ‘Oh, my God, wait, it’s so much more complicated than we thought.’ Everybody looks back and thinks we would have been way better off not going to war. That was really dumb. But history repeats itself all the time. We didn’t need to go into Vietnam, but circumstances, patriotism, anger, fear — all these things lead into war."

"It’s a history of the world," Kerr said. "It just so happens that now is probably the scariest time since I’ve been alive.”

As the year draws to a close, de Young Director Max Hollein is providing a sneak peek at what lies ahead for the San Francisco art museum. The New York Times reports that the first major show developed since Hollein took charge will open in the fall of 2018 and is tentatively set to be titled “The Fashion of Islam."

"There are probably people who don’t even think there is fashion in Islam,” Mr. Hollein told the paper. “But if you look at Saudi Arabia, Dubai and Beirut, the fashion is really vibrant, and it can speak to larger political and social developments, cultural understanding and misunderstandings.”

The exhibit will focus on hijabs, and follows in the footsteps of "Faith, Fashion, Fusion” — an Australian show dealing with so-called "modest fashion." This is not the first time the de Young has shown fashion, with the 2012 Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit proving the popularity of the topic.

According to Hollein, textiles curators at the museum will “put together a group of scholars and experts to develop the project, both in the area of fashion and the history of culture.” The exhibit will look at both European interpretations of the hijab, Islamic streetwear, and the history of the garment.

“We want to apply the same scholarly rigor here that we would apply to an old masters’ show,” Hollein explained.

It's a terrifying twist to an already tragic tale. Friends of Golam and Shamima Rabbi discovered the San Jose couple, dead from gunshot wounds, inside the family home on Sunday after coming to check on them. Written next to the couple on the floor in ink they found the following message: "Sorry, my first kill was clumsy." So reports ABC 7, which further notes that the Rabbis, aged 59 and 57, were devout attendees of a local mosque, and lived a quiet life. San Jose police have not confirmed the discovery of the note, or its contents.

Golam worked as an engineer, and Shamima worked as an accountant. The two had emigrated from Bangladesh before settling down in San Jose. The Rabbis have two sons, 17 and 21, who were reportedly not home at the time of the murders.

KTVU says that the couple was found around 2 p.m. Sunday after relatives had been having trouble reaching them.

The LA Times observes that the married couple volunteered with the South Bay Islamic Association and the Evergreen Islamic Center, both in San Jose. ABC 7 reports that members of the Islamic Center are both saddened by the deaths, and, understandably, concerned by the note.

"We are surprised that they are no longer with us and especially going away in such a manner is something we just can't come to grips with," said Faisal Yazadi of the Evergreen Islamic Center.

According to the Times, police have no motive for the killings and are asking for the public's assistance. Anyone who may know anything pertaining to the murder should call the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 408-947-7867.

The East Bay woman charged with battery and a hate crime for her December 6 attack on a Muslim man praying in a park has now been slapped with a restraining order. Video of the incident depicts the woman, Denise Slader, rambling on about Allah being "Satan" before throwing coffee on and hitting the man.

Judge Jeffrey Brand yesterday ordered that Denise Slader must stay 200 yards away from both the man she attacked and the East Bay park where the incident occurred, reports CBS 5.

Slader, who works as a program technician for the parole division of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, is currently on administrative leave, notes CBS 5.

Video of Slader totally losing it in Lake Chabot Regional Park was posted to Facebook by the man attacked, Rasheed Albeshari, who also wrote about what happened.

"#Islamophobia After praying, this lady approached us and started yelling at us that we're brainwashed for believing in Allah," explained Albeshari. "'Allah is evil' she said. I started video taping her, I, also, was hit by an umbrella before taking a shower of coffee right on my face."

The restraining order follows the arrest of a Richmond resident who had allegedly threatened to harm Muslims after pledging his allegiance to Donald Trump on Facebook. In that incident, police detonated a possible explosive device found in the man's home.

Slader, who CBS 5 notes was present in court when the judge issued the restraining order, was uncharacteristically silent and declined to speak to reporters.

Remember this lady? Of course you do — she would be hard to forget. Just under two weeks ago video surfaced that appeared to show her accosting several Muslim men praying in a Castro Valley park. She then proceeded to douse one of the men with hot coffee before striking him with an umbrella. Oh yeah, and she called them "murderers" and ranted about Allah being "Satan" for good measure. Well, in the intervening two weeks this crazed parkgoer has been identified and charged with a hate crime.

Denise Slader was charged with "battery and violating the civil rights of the men in conjunction with the hate-crime provision of the state penal code," notes the San Francisco Chronicle.

When reached by the paper, Slader didn't have much to say.

“Look, I don’t want to talk to you," she said. "No comment. No comment. Goodbye.”

Above and beyond the extremely troubling behavior depicted in the video, Slader disturbingly works for the parole division of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. When reached for comment by the Chronicle, a department spokesperson said that he did not know if or how Slader's employment would be impacted by the charges.

“We expect all of our employees to treat everyone with dignity and respect both on and off the job," explained spokesperson Jeffrey Callison. "We cannot comment on the specifics of that investigation; however, discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated.”

As for the men she allegedly attacked? Rasheed Albeshari, who both filmed the encounter and was hit by Slader, put his faith in the courts.

“I trust the justice system and we’ll wait for the court decision,” he told the Chronicle.

To recap, you can watch Rasheed's video of the encounter below.

Proving that the liberal Bay Area is not immune to the crazed delusions of anti-Muslim bigots, a woman accosted a group of people praying in a park near Alameda County's Lake Chabot on Sunday.

After calling Allah "Satan," and telling them they were all "murderers," one of the men praying alleges the woman threw coffee on him and proceeded to attack him with her umbrella.

Rasheed Albeshari posted video of part of the encounter to Facebook, and wrote briefly about what happened.

"#Islamophobia After praying, this lady approached us and started yelling at us that we're brainwashed for believing in Allah," explained Albeshari. "'Allah is evil' she said. I started video taping her, I, also, was hit by an umbrella before taking a shower of coffee right on my face."

Albeshari told Rawstory that he moved to the Bay Area from North Carolina four years ago, partially because he expected to face less discrimination here.

"I never thought this would ever happen to me here,” said Albeshari. “It’s a very uncomfortable feeling.”

This attack obviously comes amid increasing hostility and hysteria being directed at Muslims, spurred most notably by Donald Trump.

If Republican "presidential candidate" Donald Trump plans to individually register American Muslims — something he's insinuated he'd like to do in order to (successfully) bait a thirsty media and feed the darkest, most bestial instincts of his trollish base — he's got his work cut out for him in the Bay Area.

Spread about the six counties surrounding San Francisco is one of the largest Muslim populations in the United States according to a 2010 study from the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding. The study found 250,000 Muslims living here, who as a whole represent under one percent of US as a whole. Some, many, even perhaps all of these American Muslims are resistant — even consternated by — Trump's proposals, and predictably disturbed their resonance in certain Islamophobic echo chambers.

Noman Munif, a 38-year-old business development executive at Google, was born in Pakistan. He lives in the Bay Area with his three children and heads the San Ramon Valley Islamic Center, a group of thriving professionals like business owners, founders, and CEOs.

"This is home," he told the Chronicle. "We would hope that we are considered Americans. The fear is, today Donald Trump is saying Muslims can’t come to this country... When is he going to be saying Muslims here have to leave?”

Actually, Mr. Trump seems to have proposed that if Muslims do leave the US they won't be able to come back, so he's definitely working on this. But Munif is just one Bay Area Muslim who finds the abhorrent public figure's abhorrent rhetoric to be.... bad.

Let's hear from some more, courtesy of ABC7.

Rabia Chaudry: "It's an ignorant, ill-thought, unconstitutional, likely illegal proposal from someone who I believe does not have public service as his core value."

Mujeeb Ijaz: "I think it plays into the hands of groups like ISIL that are looking for a crack in the American spirit."

Dalia Mogahed, director of research at the aforementioned Institute, also registered dismay. “These statements mark a new low in our political discourse. He may not have a chance of winning the presidential race, but he has already changed our country by pushing the boundaries of socially acceptable bigotry,” said Mogahed. “What was unthinkable is now mainstream.”

You know what, just to piss Trump off, let's hear from MOAR MUSLIMS.

Michael Kim, age 46, of Lafayette, is a graduate of the US Naval Academy and for seven years served as an active duty naval officer “How is it possible that this country I love, that I’m a community member of, a nation I defend, is turning its back on me so harshly?” he said

35-year-old emergency room physician Asad Tarsin who lives in Dublin, said "I feel we are at a crossroads at a nation. I think that with crossroads there’s a degree of concern if we as a country are going to make the right decisions."

Somehow, bless her, Tarsin has found a way to be hopeful and generous. "I think I have more faith in my fellow Americans than I do a segment of the population that’s been duped by a rhetoric of fear.”

Now that's a faith to which we should all subscribe.

A video posted yesterday to YouTube shows footage from a February, 13th protest in Yorba Linda, held outside a fundraising event held by the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), with a goal of aiding women's shelters, and fighting homelessness and hunger in the US. The protesters were there to speak out against "what they called the group’s agenda to impose Sharia (Islamic law) on American society," explains the Jewish Journal. "They were particularly upset with the event’s keynote speakers, New York cleric Imam Siraj Wahhaj and Amir Abdel Malik Ali, whom they said hold anti-American, anti-Israel and anti-Semitic views."

The protest got underway mid-afternoon, following several days of grassroots organizing. While politicians in the OC attempted to stop the $25-a-plate event, or force them to choose a different speaker, people from all over Southern California, including Los Angeles, planned the protest. "In the afternoon, the event had the atmosphere of a July 4 picnic. Many brought lawn chairs and blankets, sang patriotic songs and tied red, white and blue bandanas on their dogs," said the OC Register.

A group of about 100 splintered off from the principal group of protesters, including some who carried signs that linked ICNA to Hamas and Hezbollah. ICNA's spokesperson said those people did not know the facts about the organization, adding "We have no links to any overseas organization. We absolutely denounce violence and terrorism."

However, notes the Register, "Malik Ali is a Bay Area Islamic activist who spoke at 'Israeli Apartheid Week' at UC Irvine in 2010. There he said he supports Hezbollah, which the CIA labels a terrorist group."

The message, though, as heard in the shouts of the protesters, was that the people at the event were terrorists, child molesters, and wife-beaters, who worship a fraudulent prophet, and, above all else, are not welcome in not only Yorba Linda, but also in America.

Among the protesters were Rabbi Dov Fischer of Young Israel of Orange County, Irvine Jewish activist Dee Sterling and U.S. Congressmen Ed Royce (R-CA), Gary Miller (R-CA), and Chapman University adjunct professor of law Karen Lugo, who said "This is not about hate [...] We are not hatemongers. The world Islamophobia is an effort to chill us. The Constitution was never meant to allow a tyranny of a minority."

"He's a very calm and centered person," Frank Lindh said. "He's very spiritual. He does his daily prayers. He's an observant Muslim. We talk heart to heart a lot."

John is currently imprisoned at Terre Haute, Indiana federal prison "that holds mostly Muslim inmates whose communications with the outside world are restricted."

Although he was raised Catholic, John Walker Lindh converted to Islam in a Mill Valley at age 16. In 2001, John was captured as an enemy combatant during the United States invasion of Afghanistan.

In 2002, John pleaded guilty to aiding the now disbanded Taliban government.
Now, it's increasingly difficult for us to explain the conceptual art that is Michael Savage's work. Its genius lies in its demented complexity. But according to Bay City News (via CBS 5), Savage recently "sued the Council on American-Islamic Relations in federal court in San Francisco Monday over the group's use of his words on its Web site." Apparently, they used one of his many hateful yet poetic and loud crazy-man diatribes about Islam on their site. Savage says he was taken out of context, but Ibrahim Hooper, an American-Islamic Relations spokesman, said that the his lawsuit "seems to be a legal and rhetorical rant" (heh) as well as "one of the most vicious attacks on the faith of Islam that I've heard in more than 20 years of anti-discrimination work."

Well, we really don't know what to say about Savage's fit about how others should use his words (especially since his own critical thinking skills are famously dull.) Except: oh you, Michael. You just go on keeping it real. Mighty real. Mighty crazy real.

He was hanging the figure from a tree but after a complaint was made, the cops told him to take it down. So he moved it into his front lawn where it will stay until we "finish the job in Iraq".

Now, some of you might be wondering why wouldn't he think people would find this offensive? To which the reply is:

"If you're offended that's okay. I'm offended at liberalism. I'm offended at people who want to kill the pope. I'm offended by people who burn effigies of the American flag and of George Bush."
