BART to Run All Night on Labor Day Weekend

Due to Caltrans closing the Bay Bridge in both directions over the upcoming Labor Day weekend for earthquake retrofitting, BART will be running hourly overnight service to 14 stations during the wee hours of Friday, September 4 through the early morning hours of Labor Day on Monday, September 7. Participating San Francisco stations will be the 24th Street Mission, Embarcadero, and Powell Street stations, as well as the San Francisco International Airport station. We've never experienced a late-night holiday BART ride but can imagine they'd be pretty rowdy, not to mention the tragic Oscar Grant shooting that occurred this past New Year's Eve. Stay safe and keep your wits about you, BART passengers. [Via Eyes on Blogs, SFBART]

Let the Irish minstrelsy begin! (After the jump.)

It's back. That house on Castro Street is - at last! - all dolled up for the holidays.

This sticker spotted as we depart for the Thanksgiving holiday. As a non-native species, we left our family and all its colorful characteristics on the East Coast. But we've found new family out here, and so we're looking for a sticker that reads "I heart my violent alcoholic family ."

We've watched Meet Me in St. Louis every Christmas Eve for the past million years. Perhaps an obvious choice, but nonetheless, Judy Garland's heart-wrenching version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas reduces us to sobs and snotty tissues every year. Not to mention the look on Tootie's face as she listens to her sister's melancholic words of comfort.

They're here - the shiny, rectangular all-access passes to your favorite indie-rock festival, Noise Pop. According to their press release, these badges will "...grant access to all general admission Noise Pop shows, film screenings, happy hours and other happenings during the festival." Yes. We want one.

Feel that? Why, those are your heart stings being tugged care of us and this cool little guy over here on the right. (Who like totally did not just make us completely tear up right now, so shut up!)

Chucky appears to be back on the homeless beat this week with two stories about it. One is something that might piss people off, the other something that might not piss people off. We'll start with the one that might piss people off one first so we can cheer everyone up at the end with the one that won’t piss people off and make the post heart-warming, just in time for the holidays.

-- Crime in Choir: CIC rocks it. Hard. For reals. Big time. One of the purest sounds coming out of SF these days, really. Brave the chill and head down to Potrero Hill to check them out. You won't regret it. Pink Mountain and Science of Yarba open at this anniversary party for Frenetic Records. The music starts at 10 p.m. at Bottom of the Hill; $10.

As the last night of Hanukkah approaches, we would like to take this opportunity to reflect on this past week's Jewy events and provide a few tidbits of what we shiksas have learned from this year's celebration.

If you haven't made it to the Curiosity Shoppe yet, what are you waiting for? It's one of our new favorite shops on Valencia Street. After having an e-commerce site for a year we were thrilled to hear that owners Lauren Smith and Derek Fagerstrom were setting up a brick and mortar spot in our fair city. Not only do we adore the choice of products for sale in the shop, we're big fans of their blog, Smarts & Crafts. Lauren and Derek have also been posting every Wednesday over at Design Sponge , sharing great project ideas for fixing up any space. And now they've teamed up with Todd Oldham to host a holiday crafting challenge on You Tube. Or at least that's Todd up there in their shop asking people to send in videos of their favorite holiday crafts and DIY projects. Winners will be posted on the You Tube homepage so get out that camera and get crafting.

Our sister site, Gothamist, snapped up this image of the perfect dinner idea for all of you interfaith couples out there who don't know how to celebrate the first night of Chanukah together.

Why, what a delightful holiday refreshment table shot. Found in our Flickr page, and taken at some festive party this weekend, it has all of the staples of an imminent San Francisco gathering: hummus (thank you for remembering the olive oil drizzle!); simple crudité orbiting a coffee mug used to hold, ugh, dip (a most vile word for such a critical item); wine; chives used to accent; whimsically out-of-season platter holding the baked goods; those fattening tortilla wrap things; and most importantly, mother's little helper. What would the holidays be without it?

We were trolling around on the Interweb the other day and caught notice of this banner ad, which immediately depressed us, given that: 1) Somebody at MUNI thought that monthly passes make an awesome Christmas gift and 2) That person paid money for these banner ads, money that was probably just sitting there in the "spend money on stupid crap" folder that MUNI obviously keeps in the office, right next to the reception desk...

Each Tuesday we will feature new music that should (or whatever) be on your radar. Standouts: This week is worst than last week. Really though, there's nothing (except the Original Cast Recording of Lovemusik). Even on the Amoeba Records website, they only have two, we repeat, two records on their list. With the holidays approaching, one would think that there would be an avalanche of CDs being released but again, there's only a few. Please...

Growing up west of (the) 5 freeway, the heavy metal sound fo the '80s escaped us. But while vacationing in the far off land of Riverside County during the holidays as a wee tyke, we would listen to our cousins' heavy metal tapes with envy and detached amusement. This was one of the songs we enjoyed most, Quiet Riot's "Cum on Feel the Noize." Sadly, their lead signer, Kevin Dubrow, 52, was found dead...

In Los Angeles, LAist most definitely celebrated Thanksgiving like no other. After all, one has to keep up all the energy to keep on walking the line at the Writers Strike and fighting the unfortunate return of the wildfires in Malibu, which single handedly destroyed over fifty homes within the first 24 hours. National outlets may be covering the fires, but CNN also found it is easier to buy a gun than fruit and veggies in South Central. On the entertainment front, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are suing Showtime over the show titled Californication and Rami Kashou of Project Runway chatted with LAist about his Palestinian heritage and, of course, designing beauty.

And how might you observe Guy Fawkes Night here in San Francisco? Here are our suggestions:

Speaking of ILM, their Halloween party boasted one of the best costume ideas we've seen in eons. Behold, Ikeabots!

After a bit of a hiatus, our Muni Security Guy returns with a primer on how Muni Security Guys become Muni Security Guys. We'd also like to let everyone know that our Muni Driver has taken a bit of a break and hopefully will return soon. But if there are any other Muni Drivers (or anyone who does anything Muni-like) out there who'd like to take a plunge, let us know-- we'd love to have you.

Here's todays sports news

Now that there will be no city sanctioned Halloween debauchery in the Castro, Civic Center, or anywhere else, it'll be exciting to see the police state that's sure to erupt come 10/31.

The Chronicle called Ed Jew's office today, and his legislative aide Barbara Meskunas said he wasn't in because he was sleeping. Jet lag, you know.

All across the Ist-A-Verse (or at least the American parts thereof), writers and editors are in the midst of enjoying their three-day weekend. But after the week we've all had, we feel like the break is not only needed, but deserved. Just look at everything we've been doing!
