After Carole Migden won the endorsement of the Harvey Milk Club, things were looking grim for Assemblyman Mark Leno. But today Gavin Newsom shined his megawatt charm over in Leno's direction today, endorsing his bid for a state Senate seat. According to the B.A.R., " Newsom [is] expected to publicly endorse Leno Wednesday night at the Herbst Theatre during a special screening of Pursuit of Equality..."

-- The Virgin Spring and Through a Glass Darkly: Ingmar Bergman's rape/revenge flick (oh, we know that it's much more complicated than that, we're sure) The Virgin Spring inspired Wes Craven's Last House on the Left. And Through a Glass Darkly was described by Bergman as a "chamber film" for its allusions to "both to the chamber plays of Strindberg, and to chamber music in general." They screen tonight at 7 p.m (TVS) and 5:10 p.m. and 8:50 (TAGD) at the Castro Theatre; $6-9.

-- The Passion of Anna and Shame : It's an Ingmar Bergman bonanza! The Castro Theatre's tribute to the famous director starts out with these two heavy gems. Anna screens at 7 p.m., Shame at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.; $6-9.

-- Giants vs. Brewers: Shouldn't beer be half-priced when we play Milwaukee? Alas. Game starts at 7:15 p.m., AT&T Park, King and Third Streets; $20-$98.

-- The 2007 Bay Area Rhythm Exchange: Stepology (which we can only hope is very much like "Vibeology") presents tap stars Channing Cook-Holmes (Riverdance, Gangs of New York, Bojangles), John Kloss (Tap Heat), Deborah Mitchell (The Cotton Club, Black and Blue), Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards (Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk, Bamboozled), Sam Weber (Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood). 8 p.m., Herbst Theatre (SF War Memorial and Performing Arts Center), 401 Van Ness; $19-$22.

The lovely local ladies in Von Iva are gearing up to release a brand new CD called Our Own Island. They're doing their part to heat up the chilly San Francisco summer by having a special CD release party on August 4th at 12 Galaxies (in addition to tomorrow's party at the Blank Club in San Jose). They promise a bikini bonanza (use your imagination) so risque that you have to be over 18 to get in. Don't worry, they'll make sure your beer stays chilled by offering special "I Partied with Von Iva" cozies, which is possibly the best merch item we've heard of all year. We're giving one lucky winner a copy of the brand new CD and a beer cozy of their very own. Prolific, ornery, talented, unpredictable, easy on the eyes, genius, bastard - there are many ways to try and describe Ryan Adams, but at this point if you've heard of him, you've probably formed some sort of opinion. In his new single "Two" he sings: "I got a really good heart, I just can't catch a break." Whether or not you buy that, we're still loving his new CD. Easy Tiger is built on the careworn love songs with memorable melodies that he does best, with no gimmicks or interludes. Bring your broken heart to hear him perform live on Monday night at the Herbst Theatre or on Tuesday at the Berkeley Community Theatre. V-Day San Francisco 2007: Filipina Women Against Violence: Times like this make us wish we learned to speak Tagalog as a kid, instead of just laughing at our Filipino mom every time she swears in her native tongue. (We don't actually laugh at her; we just assume it's bad and flee to the next room.)

which depicts the recent history of civil war in Sudan, and is based on the true story of Valentino Achak Deng, a survivor of a 1000-mile exodus and one of Sudan's "Lost Boys." In 2003, Eggers and Deng traveled by cargo plane to southern Sudan where Deng was reunited with his parents.
