"Got all the people out that were in the gurneys and stuff like that, that were permanently in bed and can't get up or nothing like that. While en route to the scene, police were notified that one of the participants had crashed into a semi truck.

KRON4 received video footage of the incident, which features a light blue Chevy Camaro without any plates circling the middle of the intersection several times. It then appears to spin into a crowd of onlookers at least once before crashing into the semi track waiting at the traffic light.

Following the crash, onlookers charge the wrecked vehicle, kicking and stomping on it. The truck driver asks the person behind the camera, “Why?!”

“Why are you guys messing up cars?” he says to the crowd.

Then the crowd disperses, abandoning the car in the intersection.

Later in the video, which shows scenes earlier in the night leading up to the incident, one onlooker appears to be fairly badly injured after getting knocked down and nearly run over, but no injuries were reported.

Officers later discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen by someone in San Jose, according to KPIX.

Image: Google Street View

Police Pull Over Oakland Woman After Thieves Put License Plates Tied to Crime on Her Car

An Oakland woman discovered that her license plates had been swapped with stolen plates that were linked to a serious crime — after she was pulled over by Hayward police who were tipped off by a Flock license plate reader.

SF News

hayward

license plate readers

license plates

speed cameras

surveillance cameras

Oakland

police

Leanne Maxwell

An Oakland woman discovered that her license plates had been swapped with stolen plates that were linked to a serious crime — after she was pulled over by Hayward police who were tipped off by a Flock license plate reader.

As Oaklandside reports, 65-year-old Ann Nomura of Oakland was pulled over by Hayward police earlier this month and told to exit her car with her hands up, after deputies flagged her car as being tied to a serious crime — only to find she wasn’t connected to the case at all.

Authorities said the stop was triggered by a Flock license plate reader that had scanned the plates on her car, which turned out to have been switched out with plates tied to the incident.

“That is when it sort of hit me that I was being treated as a potential criminal and could have been hurt,” she told Oaklandside.

According to KGO, the process is called “cold-plating,” which helps thieves evade police detection in break-ins, robberies, toll evasion, and, now, avoiding speed cameras.

Sgt. Roberto Morales with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office told Oaklandside that the tactic has been common over the years, but authorities haven’t consistently kept track of reports. Morales said the proliferation of speed cameras has made authorities more aware of the problem in recent years.

“If you don’t know how often license plates are stolen in Oakland, you don’t know how often this is going to happen,” Nomura said, speaking to the Oaklandside.

In 2022, SFist reported that SFPD had uncovered a large plate-swapping operation, discovering tools inside a stolen Audi along with evidence suggesting the tactic was used to mask stolen vehicles and avoid detection.

Additionally, according to Oakland Redditors, cars that are missing license plates altogether are all too common in the city. One user said they even saw a car with a handmade plate. While the Redditor referred to it as a “handwritten paper plate,” SFist is going to assume they don’t mean an actual “paper plate.”

Nomura, speaking to Oaklandside, expressed concern that cold-plating could lead to crime victims paying the price. While the Oakland Police Department and the Alameda County Sheriff credit speed cameras with catching large numbers of suspects since their respective installations, some residents are concerned about potential privacy violations.

Brian Hofer, a former Oakland privacy commissioner, points out that authorities are required to utilize other evidence in addition to speed reader data, in accordance with Senate Bill 34. Per Oaklandside, Hofer is currently suing the city of Oakland for violating the measure, claiming that officers often rely solely on plate-reader alerts without verifying details like vehicle make, model, and color.

He pointed to a previous case in which he and his brother were mistakenly stopped at gunpoint after driving a rental car that had been recovered from a theft, but was never removed from a law enforcement database.

“OPD could run the plate, and the image will pop up, and they should have some sort of visual confirmation to be like, ‘wait a minute, this license plate was on a silver Corona, now it’s on a red Ford 150,’” Hofer said.

Nomura counts herself lucky that no guns were drawn and that she was treated professionally, but she told Oaklandside that the ramifications from the incident were not insignificant. She said she not only had to replace the stolen plate in order to drive her car again, but it also came with a hefty fee for expedited shipping.

She also learned the hard way that she was supposed to report the plate stolen with Oakland police, which had to be done in person, as San Rafael police called her days later saying her car was used in an attempted robbery.

Previously: License Plate Theft Victim Uncovers Elaborate Criminal Scheme After Getting Hit With Massive Parking Tickets

Image: Hayward Police Department/Facebook

Hayward Cop Accused of Extorting Brothel For Sex, $1,000 In Exchange For Protection

A Hayward police officer faces felony charges for allegedly extorting an illegal brothel and taking a $1,000 bribe and free sex services in exchange for protection against police, and he could face up to four years in prison if convicted.

SF News

hayward

felony

Police Officer

bribery

extortion

brothel

sex work

sex workers

Leanne Maxwell

A Hayward police officer faces felony charges for allegedly extorting an illegal brothel and taking a $1,000 bribe and free sex services in exchange for protection against police investigations, and he could face up to four years in prison if convicted.

Hayward police officer Benjamin Yarbrough, 48, faces felony charges, with the potential of four years in prison, for allegedly extorting a brothel operator in exchange for protection. Prosecutors say he received $1,000 and sexual services using his position to provide tips about law enforcement activity, investigate competitors, and influence official duties, as KTVU reports.

"Officer Yarbrough’s actions appeared to act in support of the trafficking operation and to disrupt competing illicit businesses," a probable cause declaration stated, per KTVU.

As Bay Area News Group reports, surveillance photos matched in-person visits to the brothel at 22200 Main Street with text messages sent between March 12 and April 1, 2025, investigators said. Yarbrough allegedly used his personal and work cellphones to arrange sexual encounters and a $1,000 payment in exchange for protecting the business, while reassuring operator Yangiong Xiong that he was a “friend.”

One message read, according to investigators, "I don’t bust, I protect and keep safe."

Yarbrough denied receiving money, having sex with anyone at the brothel, knowing Xiong, or providing protection, according to the declaration reviewed by Bay Area News Group. Xiong identified Yarbrough in a photo and gave a statement consistent with the text messages, adding that the $1,000 — ten $100 bills in a red envelope — was given along with access to women to avoid police action.

It should be noted that, as KTVU reports, Yarbrough is the brother-in-law of Hayward Police Chief Bryan Matthews, who said the department learned of the investigation in July and immediately contacted the district attorney because of the family connection.

"After learning this information, and because of my familial relationship with Officer Yarbrough, I immediately contacted Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson and requested her office conduct the criminal investigation," Matthews said in a statement.

Yarbrough was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations, and Internal Affairs is conducting an administrative review of possible policy violations.

“As police officers, we are held to a higher standard and the allegations in this case, if proven to be true, strike at the core of who we are as a profession,” Matthews said. “They are not representative of the dedicated, professional men and women of the Hayward Police Department or the policing profession.”

As Bay Area News Group reports, the latest allegations are linked to a San Jose police investigation last year into a residential brothel called "Hestia ACU Wellness," which led to Xiong’s arrest in June 2025 for running an illegal brothel. Investigators seized 11 cellphones and found numbers linked to other suspected brothels, including one in Hayward at 22283 Main Street called "Flame ACU Wellness."

A forensic review of the phones showed communication between Yarbrough and Xiong, leading authorities to open an investigation into Yarbrough.

Related:SF Finally Shuts Down Tenderloin Massage Parlor That Was ‘Blatantly Operating as a Brothel’

Hayward Family of Three Deported at Routine SF Immigration Check-in, Including Deaf Seven-Year-Old Boy

More pointless cruelty in the SF immigration courts under Trump, as a mother and her two kids, one of them deaf, checked in for their SF immigration appointment and were heartlessly shipped to Colombia.

SF News

immigration

deportation

hayward

Joe Kukura

More pointless cruelty in the SF immigration courts under Trump, as a mother and her two kids, one of them deaf, checked in for their SF immigration appointment and were heartlessly shipped to Colombia.

It's another story of immigrants very much attempting to play by the rules to establish their citizenship status, but the Trump administration cruelly just shipping them off to secret detention centers. The Chronicle has the story of Lesly Rodriguez Gutierrez, a mother of a five- and seven-year-old (who happens to be deaf) who reported Tuesday for her required check-in at the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement office on Tehama Street. But the entire family of three was detained, arrested, and deported including the deaf seven-year-old, who is without his hearing aids. The family’s attorney says they’ve been given the runaround, with inaccurate information about where the family is now.

“This obfuscation, this false information, these different stories for different people — it’s just chaos at best and intentional,” Centro Legal de la Raza immigration attorney Nikolas De Bremaeker told the Chronicle. “The fact that she has a severely disabled child … is very strong humanitarian grounds to not deport a 7-year-old.”

Per the Chronicle's Thursday reporting, the attorneys “can’t find them” and "ICE officials have given attorneys and Gutierrez’s family confusing and false information about which detention center Gutierrez was sent to." KTVU has some later Thursday reporting saying that the family was deported to Colombia, though that information is not confirmed, as no one has been able to contact the Gutierrez family.

The Gutierrez family is from Colombia, though have been living in Hayward for about four years since Lesly fled Colombia to escape an abusive relationship with a man she says was involved with a violent gang.

"She was afraid her ex-partner would harm her and her two children," one of her relatives told KTVU through an interpreter. "He was part of a gang in the city that committed murders and robberies. We had already received several threats from him."

De Bremaeker says he will continue to file emergency appeals through the weekend.

Related: Undocumented Immigrant Detained by ICE in Front of Home in San Jose [SFist]

Image Courtesy Family Of Lesly Rodriguez Gutierrez

Hayward DUI Suspect Charged With Killing Woman and Seriously Injuring His Own Son, Though He’s Not in Custody

An alleged DUI driver stands accused of a drunken 88 MPH crash in Hayward that killed his 20-year-old passenger, seriously injured his own son, and left another passenger comatose. "hile one of the young children is safe, both children have been uprooted from the only home they knew, losing their clothes, toys, and sense of security in the blast."

The fundraiser, seeking to raise $22,000 to help cover immediate expensese including temporary housing and medical bills, has so far raised over $17,000.

PG&E confirmed that the other three individuals who were injured after the blast were workers working for them, and their injuries were apparently minor.

A separate GoFundMe was posted by Jessica Fox, the daughter of the couple in the neighboring house that was also destroyed, who said that her mom, who was home at the time of the explosion, miraculously made it out safely with one of her dogs — however another dog named Bright Eyes, and a cat, were killed in the blast and subsequent fire.

Fox said her father's business was destroyed in addition to the home, and she adds, "They are left with each other, their surviving doggie, and only the clothes they were wearing at the time. My mom’s glasses were blown off her face... her phone, wallet, and ID, clothing, documents. A lifetime’s worth of tools and family heirlooms are gone in an instant."

A second leak apparently began sometime after, which was "secured" as of 9:25 am, and it was just about 13 minutes later that the explosion occurred.

The construction crew was actually at work on the physical street, and has been identified as being part of Oakland-based Redgwick Construction, as KTVU reports. The company was contracted by Alameda County's public works department as part of an active project to improve East Lewelling Boulevard.

Gas service was subsequently cut to part of the block, and PG&E was reportedly providing hotel accommodations for affected neighbors.

Previously: Explosion In East Bay Neighborhood Injures Six, Destroys Two Homes

Day Around the Bay: Trump Fires Five More SF Immigration Judges, to Hire ‘Deportation Judges’

Rep. Now, nearly 60 years later, officials in Hayward and Alameda County are proposing a $900,000 redress fund for surviving residents who had their land seized and homes destroyed.

As KGO reports, Hayward officials and Alameda County Supervisors Elisa Márquez and Nate Miley have proposed that $250,000 would be allocated to the fund from the City of Hayward, $400,000 from Márquez’s office, and $250,000 from Miley’s. The funds would go to former Russell City residents whose properties were taken by eminent domain and annexed into Hayward.

Russell City was home to roughly 1,400 people, including Black, Latino, Asian, and poor white residents, before it was razed. About 700 parcels were seized. Though unincorporated and lacking city services, it was a vibrant community known for its strong local identity and blues music scene, hosting acts like Ray Charles and Dottie Ivory.

In 2021, Hayward formally apologized for its role in the destruction of the neighborhood, as reported by KQED. Alameda County followed with its own apology in 2023. That same year, the county formed a Reparations Commission to study the harms done to Russell City residents. The Russell City Reparative Justice Project — launched in 2022 — provided recommendations for how to move from apology to tangible repair.

Supervisor Márquez, who grew up in nearby Kelly Hill and first heard about Russell City from classmates at Fairview Elementary, said, “This is the result of collective and local action. This is what happens when you have people in these positions that are rooted and come from the community.”

She added, “With the background of everything going on at the federal level, it’s more important now than ever that we uplift this reality. We control our own voices, values and destiny at the local level.”

Eligibility requirements and payment processes are still being finalized. The Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on the proposal at its July 22 meeting.

Image: Russell City Art Commemoration mural, Heritage Plaza, Hayward; Downtown Hayward Improvement Association/Facebook

SF Man Charged After Allegedly Attacking a Pedestrian in Hayward While Yelling ‘I’m a Pimp’

A 28-year-old San Francisco man was recently arrested and charged in Hayward after allegedly grabbing and threatening a woman on Jackson Street, shouting “I’m a pimp” as he tried to force her into prostitution, according to police.

SF News

crime

hayward

pedestrians

attacks

sexual assault

prostitution

Leanne Maxwell

A 28-year-old San Francisco man was recently arrested and charged for an attack in Hayward where he allegedly grabbed and threatened a woman on Jackson Street, shouting “I’m a pimp” as he tried to force her into prostitution, according to police.

As Bay Area News Group reports, Hayward police say Taz Guest spotted his 24-year-old victim walking home around 10:20 p.m. on May 30 and followed her onto the 100 block of Jackson Street. When she rebuffed his advances and said “no,” officers allege Guest grabbed her breast and reached for her pants.

“He screamed ‘I’m a pimp,’ claimed he was armed, and threatened to kill her,” according to a Hayward Police Department statement. The woman fought back by hurling a can of Red Bull and striking Guest until he fled.

Guest was arrested on June 4. In a recorded police interview, he’s accused of admitting to the assault and threats but denying any sexual intent. Investigators noted Guest’s detailed knowledge of the local sex trade — terminology and known street corners — which matched the victim’s account.

He now faces felony counts of assault, criminal threats, and sexual battery. Bail is set at $200,000.

A defense motion ahead of Monday’s bail hearing claims Guest is unlikely to reoffend and questions whether Jane Doe clearly saw her attacker. Prosecutors counter that the victim’s prompt 911 call, physical evidence of her injuries, and Guest’s alleged own statements provide clear probable cause.

If convicted, Guest could serve up to several years in state prison.

Hayward Detective Lt. Maria Alvarez reminded the public that assaults targeting pedestrians remain a concern citywide. “We encourage anyone who feels unsafe walking alone at night to call us immediately,” she said, urging witnesses to come forward.

Guest’s attorney has not responded to requests for comment. Meanwhile, the victim is recovering from bruises and psychological trauma, according to court records. Her case will proceed through Alameda County Superior Court, where a judge will soon decide whether to lower Guest’s bail.

Image: Ritchie Quintero/Getty

Marine Veteran Dies After Sedation in Hayward Police Custody During Mental Health Crisis

Marine vet Nathan Hoang died in Hayward police custody after being sedated with midazolam during a mental health crisis. His case, disclosed 6 weeks later, raises concerns over sedative use and police response to psychiatric emergencies.

According to Bay Area News Group, Nathan Hoang, a 41-year-old Marine Corps veteran and father of six from Hayward, died in police custody in March, nine days after a paramedic injected him with midazolam—a controversial sedative linked to several in-custody deaths across the country. The incident, which remained unreported by police for six weeks, began when Hoang—suffering from a mental health episode possibly exacerbated by methamphetamine use—mistakenly broke into a home on Virginia Street, believing his children were in danger. Officers responded, tased and handcuffed him, and placed him on a gurney, after which the paramedic administered the sedative. Minutes later, Hoang became unresponsive and was declared brain dead.

Hoang, who served two combat tours in Iraq and suffered from PTSD, had long struggled with mental health issues. His ex-wife, Cynthia Fernandez, emphasized that Hoang was a devoted father and a kind-hearted person who experienced psychotic episodes where he believed his family was in danger. She believes he was in one of those episodes the morning of his arrest, searching for his children.

The use of midazolam by first responders has drawn scrutiny in recent years. An Associated Press investigation found at least 94 deaths linked to the sedative between 2012 and 2021, 16 of which occurred in California. Medical experts say that midazolam can cause or exacerbate breathing and heart failure in already distressed individuals, especially when used outside hospital settings without appropriate safeguards. National medical associations have warned against using sedatives for behavioral control outside of clinical environments due to the risks involved.

Multiple investigations are now underway, including by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, Hayward Police Department, and an independent firm of force experts. KTVU reports that four people were shot in that incident; three of them found on the scene with gunshot wounds, and a fourth person from the same shooting managing to rush to a hospital and admit themselves. The identities of the four victims are unknown, and the shooter is apparently still at large.

Then shooting took place outside a Filipino restaurant called The Grill By Miss G. It is unclear whether the victims were customers at the restaurant, or if the restaurant is even in any way involved. There is some amount of street parking on Foothill Boulevard outside the restaurant, so the victims may have just been parked nearby.

Either way, The Grill By Miss G is understandably rattled over the incident, and posted a Sunday statement on Instagram. “We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred outside our restaurant. Our thoughts are with those affected and their families and we are fully cooperating with law enforcement,” the post says. “Our restaurant has always been a welcoming space for everyone, celebrating the rich tapestry of Filipino culture while embracing the diversity of our broader community. This is an isolated incident, and we have never experienced anything like this in our many years of operation.”

According to KRON4, no arrests have been made yet, and Hayward police have not commented on whether they have a suspect or even a motive behind the shootings.

Though there is encouraging news from KPIX that all four shooting victims are stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, and all four are expected to make full recoveries.

Related: Sideshow Near Fruitvale BART In Oakland Leads to Shootout That Injures Five [SFist]

Image: Google Street View
