Owner Salvatore Lupo, a Sicilian immigrant, may have taken his inspiration from similar sandwiches elsewhere, but the muffuletta was born as a sandwich of layered Italian meats — mortadella, capicola, soppressata — provolone cheese, and olive salad, which is essentially a vinegary mixture of chopped olives and giardiniera. Sandy's also put's Duke's mayo (from NoLa) on the muffuletta, which is how some spots do it, but not all.

The other secret is the bread, a round, almost focaccia-esque variety with sesame seeds known as muffuletta loaf, with sandwiches made large-scale, picnic style, and typically sold in wedges.

Getting all these elements right is key, and such alchemy has been hard to come by in the Bay Area until Sandy's came along.

Photo: Sandy's Instagram

Sandy's has been around in SF for two years now, as a pop-up, and it's the labor of love of New Orleans native Peterson Harter, a former chef at The Progress. Sandy's made appearances at a few locations, and popped up as a stand at Outside Lands last summer where I first tried it — and, having had great muffulettas in New Orleans, I can attest that these are the real deal, and extremely crave-worthy.

As Harter tells Eater this week, he chose the Upper Haight to open his shop because "It’s like New Orleans, it just has that energy to it... It has that funkiness that I really like, and I can’t imagine this being in any other neighborhood now."

The sandwich shop is opening without a liquor license, and with a limited menu of just muffulettas — regular and vegetarian, featuring maitake mushroom — available by the quarter- or eighth-round wedge. Also, there will be some excellent chocolate chip cookies.

Harter says the menu will slowly expand over time to include coleslaw and pickled-egg salad, along with a pickled-egg salad sando that was previously featured at the pop-up. He expects to offer specials like a jumbo lump blue crab roll, and a tomato sandwich when tomato season comes along, as well as a pimento cheese sandwich and one featuring half pickled-egg salad and half pimento cheese spread. For the keto-conscious or gluten intolerant, he's planning to offer muffuletta bowls as well.

The pickled-egg salad sandwich with Zapp's "Voodoo" spiced potato chips inside. According to a release from the DA's office, Navarro Perez allegedly approached the victim and asked whether he was Black or Jewish. When the victim replied that he was Jewish, Navarro Perez "attacked the victim with a skateboard."

Navarrro Perez was arrested last Saturday and has remained in custody, and today he's been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with a hate-crime enhancement.

"There is no place for antisemitism, or any crime motivated by hate in San Francisco, in our state or anywhere else," DA Brooke Jenkins said in statement. "We will do everything in our power to hold Navarro Perez accountable and ensure there are consequences for this attack."

Jenkins added, "This prosecution will send a message to all who seek to sow division that our diversity and unity makes us strong, and we will not sit idly by and allow anyone to be singled out and victimized because of who they are."

The victim's injuries following the attack are not known, and police did not report details about the assault when it occurred. It's also not clear, until the case moves forward, where on Haight Street this took place.

Navarro Perez faces up to seven years in prison if convicted.

This alleged antisemitic attack occurred amid rising antisemitism nationwide, on social media in particular. Earlier this month, Ye a.k.a. Kanye West was seemingly permanently banned from Twitter (again) for posting disparaging things about Jewish people and for posting a Nazi swastika as soon as his account was briefly reinstated under Elon Musk.

Musk, who has offered "general amnesty" to all of the nation's bigots and COVID deniers on Twitter, said of the Kanye re-ban, "He again violated our rule against incitement to violence. Account will be suspended."

Days earlier, West had appeared on Alex Jones's InfoWars and said, "I like Hitler."

At a White House Hanukkah reception on Monday, President Joe Biden condemned rising antisemitic hate online, saying, "Silence is complicity. At around 5 p.m. Thursday night, organizers of the annual Haight-Ashbury Street Fair announced that the “The 43rd annual Haight Ashbury Street Fair will be postponed.”

The street fair was schedule for next Sunday, June 12, so the announcement comes just ten days before the scheduled event.

Organizers provided SFist with the above graphic announcement. “The 43rd annual Haight Ashbury Street Fair will be postponed until later this year,” according to the announcement. “With the hiatus over the last couple of years many logistics have shifted, we strive to bring the best experience to the neighborhood and community and want to ensure we deliver."

The statement adds that “The date will be announced soon, we are aiming for the end of this summer.” In a separate statement to SFist, organizers said they “should have a date shortly.” So this does not appear to be a Gilroy Garlic Festival situation where the event is unlikely to ever happen again, but instead some logistical monkey wrench that made organizers unable to hold the event next weekend.

I've been looking at this famous Jim Marshall pic of the Grateful Dead playing the Haight Street Fair on March 3, 1968 for 50+ years. The first “Haight Street Fair” was the March 3, 1968 concert seen above, a city-sanctioned event where they shut down Haight Street and let the Grateful Dead jam in the back of a flatbed truck. (There were a lot more people there than the photo indicates.) The day was informally called the “Haight Street Fair,” and it was meant as a one-time deal.

The first official Haight-Ashbury Street Fair was ten years later, on April 30, 1978. Then-supervisor Harvey Milk was one of the co-organizers, a mere seven months before he was killed. The fair moved to the second weekend of June in subsequent years, eventually attracting headliners like Jefferson Starship/Airplane, The Tubes, and Metallica.

Just for kicks, check out the above video of Bob Weir appearing at the 1985 Haight-Ashbury Street Fair. It’s actually a Merl Saunders & Friends concert, but Bobby appears in a pink polo shirt at the 1:06:40 mark to close out the show with the finale “Johnny B. The How Weird Street Fair also did not happen this year, and that was a full cancellation, with less explanation. Whether its supply-chain issues, City Hall permitting lags, or some other variable, there are factors holding back street festivals this year in a way that attendees may find to just not be fair.

Related: Your SF Summer and Fall Street Fair Mega-Preview, Covering Every Weekend From June to October [SFist]

Image: Rose Marie J via Yelp

58-Year-Old Man Arrested In Lower Haight Shooting That Left 19-Year-Old Permanently Blind

The SFPD announced the arrest of a suspect in a shooting that happened Sunday night in the Lower Haight, stemming from a verbal altercation between an older man and several younger men outside of a business.

SF News

shootings

haight

lower haight

crime

Jay Barmann

The SFPD announced the arrest of a suspect in a shooting that happened Sunday night in the Lower Haight, stemming from a verbal altercation between an older man and several younger men outside of a business.

The incident happened around 12:26 a.m. Monday, and it began with the altercation on the 500 block of Haight Street. And Palladino's own photos may have been pivotal in their arrests by the SFPD. Thomas was taken into custody Friday, and Fluornoy apparently fled the state and was arrested Saturday in Reno, and booked into SF County Jail on Sunday.

"They gunned him down [with the car] and tried to get the camera, which they failed to do,” Sutherland tells the Chronicle. “Because Jack wouldn’t let go."

Reportedly, Palladino, 76, tussled with the assailants and was dragged by their car. He also hit his head hard on the pavement, and was only briefly conscious as he lay in the street afterward. He was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and a brain bleed, and was taken off of life support on Sunday. As Sutherland said, "Jack’s a hard person to keep down.
The Borderlands Books saga may well be turning a page to a novel solution that ensures the sci-fi and fantasy bookstore’s permanent survival. Not long after announcing the closure of the Valencia Street bookshop famed for its late, great hairless cat, Borderlands owner Alan Beatts told Mission Local that “Unless something really astonishing and perhaps almost biblical happens in San Francisco, we will not be able to pay rent in San Francisco.”

The good book has apparently allowed that “almost biblical” something to begin realizing its prophesy. A Wednesday morning report from Mission Local declares that Borderland Books is in the process of trying to buy the 1373 Haight Street building that’s currently home to Recycled Records (whose owner has plans to retire soon). Beatts is trying to raise $1.9 million — though the mixed-use retail and residential building is listed at $2.35 million — but tells Mission Local’s Laura Wenus that he’s already got $500,000 secured and another $300,000 pending.

“The only reason I have the nerve to do something like asking people to lend me $1.9 million — a dude who runs a bookstore — is the way that the sponsorship program worked out.” Beatts tells Mission Local. “I have no idea if this is going to work out, but it beats figuring we’ll be out of business in 2025, so I might as well take a stab at it.”

Beatts elaborates further on the Borderlands Books blog. “This week I made an offer on a building that is meant to be a permanent home for Borderlands,” he wrote last Friday. “But (you knew there had to be a ‘but’), due to a number of factors, not the least of which being a lower-than-normal down payment, the institutional lenders that I have talked with are not interested in financing the purchase. So, if I'm going to make this work, I need to find individuals who would be willing to lend directly to the company.”

Borderlands has survived its original planned closure thanks to a $100/year customer sponsorship program.

Hoodline notes that the current adjacent Borderlands Café would probably not survive the transaction. Hoodline’s Camden Avery also points out that Borderlands’ current Valencia lease runs through 2025. So if they can’t cobble together the $1.9 million in the two weeks required to buy the Recycled Records building, it doesn’t necessarily mean curtains for Borderlands.

If you have a few thousand (or million!) dollars laying around and want to invest, you can pop into Borderlands and ask for Beatts or email him at abeatts[at]borderlands-books[dot]com.

The McDonald's at the end of Haight Street at Stanyan is not long for this world as the city has just about inked a deal to purchase the problematic property for redevelopment as housing. The Chronicle reports on the deal, which is still not yet finalized, saying via a source that the city is agreeing to pay $10 million for the prime parcel, which could accommodate about 90 units of affordable housing.

In addition to being a neighborhood nuisance for many years — back in 2015 we reported on the 641 police calls that the location had gotten in just over a year — this McDonald's has long been a haven of drug activity, as well as a hangout for homeless youth who spend their days in Golden Gate Park and elsewhere in the Upper Haight.

The straw that broke this camel came in the form of a shooting last month, possibly drug-related, that came eight months after this McDonald's got a new franchisee who appeared committed to cleaning the place up. That led almost immediately to talk by the Board and the Mayor of trying to acquire the property and raze this restaurant for good.

Now the Mayor’s Office of Housing is nearing a deal with the property owner, McDonald's Corp., to do just that, and the timeline of when the restaurant may close is unclear.

They then will need to find a developer, like a non-profit developer, to construct low- and middle-income units here — many of which are going to have choice views over Golden Gate Park.

“If we can pull this deal off and build affordable housing there, it would be amazing,” says Supervisor London Breed to the Chronicle, which also notes that the last affordable project in the neighborhood, some senior housing by Buena Vista Park, was built a decade ago.

And you would think that those homeless kids would be upset at the loss of cheap food, but no — in true SF fashion, these homeless kids tell the Chron they like the Whole Foods across the street better anyway.

Loved To Death, the well-known taxidermy and oddities shop in the Upper Haight that is kind of like a more goth version of Paxton Gate, is shutting down its spinoff next-door gallery space called LTD — and the owner tells Hoodline that the taxidermy is going to be the first to go as they consolidate the business back into the original storefront.

Opened in 2014 as a way to display more inventory, the LTD space at 1685 apparently became too much for owner Audra Kunkle. She opened the original creepy Victoriana store at 1681 Haight in 2008 after having a successful Etsy business selling jewelry, accessories, and taxidermy.

"Things in the world have changed," Audra tells Hoodline of the decision to wind down taxidermy sales. "With the current concerns regarding the laws that protect wildlife, this is something I personally feel needs to happen."

She also says she'll be picking up where she left off with her jewelry business as she took on all these other products and antiques, and she says, "I look forward to evolving with the times and keeping things new and interesting."

Kunkle and her oddball crew were featured in the Science channel's show Oddities: San Francisco in 2012-2013, often on the hunt for skeletons or taxidermied animals, as in the clips above and below.

Or there was the glorious time they took a visit to the Pritikin Museum/Chenery House in Glen Park, the largest private estate in San Francisco which is owned by eccentric onetime adman, octogenarian Bob Pritikin, who still invites the public in to see his nutty collection of art and objects a few hours every week.

Making an obligatory stop for a photo op in the nexus of once-upon-a-time and still-sorta-kinda Hippieville, the Upper Haight, here is VW's concept car version of their upcoming minibus throwback, which also just made an appearance at the Concours d'Elegance in Pebble Beach over the weekend. Volkswagen has batted around ideas for updates on their iconic minibus over the years, but now they've made it official that this model, dubbed the I.D. Buzz, will go into production in 2022, as Road & Track reports. The six-seater car offers a spacious interior the size of a decent SUV while offering the more modest size of a compact cargo van — and it's fully electric, with Level 3 autonomous control, meaning it can steer, stop, and accelerate on its own in certain conditions, but requires a driver in the driver's seat.

A Reddit user posted the photo above of the car showing up in the Haight on Monday, complete with its ambient body lighting, and judging from the photo and video below, the German carmaker has been taking full advantage of this California trip for some advance marketing materials — the original VW bus being as deeply associated as it is with hippies, and thus, San Francisco.

As Hoodline notes, the ID Buzz was photographed parked next to a shiny orange vintage VW bus, obviously as part of a photo or video shoot with the Haight-Ashbury as a backdrop.

Via the video, we see the new brand of hip San Franciscan VW driver, complete with man bun, beard, surfboard, record player, and corporate job, is depicted in the video... and yeah. I guess that's who they see buying this thing.

As you can see, the steering wheel is some sort of newfangled version of a steering wheel that retracts when not in use, and the car has various bang and whistles, like what appears to be a bluetooth speaker stereo thing that pulls out like a boombox.

Also, the front seats turn around so you can face people in the backseat, though presumably this is not an option while in motion — though this could be anticipating a time when the car goes fully autonomous (and won't be recommended for the easily carsick).

The ID Buzz had previously been shown at auto shows in Detroit and Geneva, and following that, Volkswagen CEO Dr. Herbert Diess says there was an outpouring of requests from customers to actually make this car.

"The Microbus has long been part of the California lifestyle," Diess said in a release. "Now we're bringing it back by reinventing it as an electric vehicle."

VW will also be making a commercial version called the ID CARGO, which will be a zero-emission delivery truck option for businesses. And going into production first will be the ID hatchback, arriving in 2020, and previously shown here by Road & Track last September. That car features the same ambient lights along the front, steering column, and semi-autonomous functions, as well as being all-electric with a 370-mile range on one charge — it's basically their new-century answer to the Beetle, and they think it can go fully autonomous by 2025.

Up in the Haight, the space that was formerly the beloved Red Vic movie theater, later briefly reborn as Second Act Marketplace, has undergone a new transformation and has just softly opened as The Bindery, a bookstore/cafe and event space from local bookseller Booksmith. Back in October we learned of Booksmith moving into the space at 1727 Haight Street, on the occasion of the bookshop's 40th anniversary, and shortly after Booksmith's winning Legacy Business status with the city — which it received along with two other veteran booksellers, Green Apple Books and Dog-Eared Books.

Now, as Hoodline reports, The Bindery is making its debut, with books on the shelves, some cozy chairs and couches, and a bar and event in the rear — cocktails, beer, and wine will be served starting in October (though it looks like wine and some other stuff may already be available).

Book buyer Camden Avery explains to Hoodline that "It's an experiment in a bookstore... where [the books] are all organized chronologically based on the date they were written in a continuum of world literature so that you can experience it differently." He says that the books selection will be an ever-evolving "index of converging and diverging stories that lead towards our literary, cultural moment."

Currently The Bindery is open from 2 to 8 p.m. daily and may have later hours on event nights.

A Haight Street fast-food restaurant that narrowly avoided a lawsuit regarding drug sales on its premises was the site of a shooting Thursday afternoon, raising questions over management's promises that illegal activity would be abated.

It was May of 2015 when McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook received a strongly worded letter from San Francisco's City Attorney Dennis Herrera regarding "numerous complaints regarding narcotics trafficking in and around" the McDonald's at Haight and Stanyan Streets. This, after the current owner of the location "refused to address the issues," Herrera said, hence their pursuit of the company, itself.

In an effort to avoid legal sanctions, McDonald's promised to add security cameras, to fence off parts of the property, to prohibit use of the parking lot after business hours, and to employ a security guard would be on site during all hours of operation. That same McDonald's was open for business Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., when a male victim was shot on the restaurant's grounds, CBS 5 reports.

According to NBC Bay Area, the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. The San Francisco Police Department has released few details on the victim, saying only that he is a 28-year-old male.

The Chron reports that no arrests have been made, and no suspect information has been released.

As previously noted, this McDonald's is no stranger to police activity — even that of the non-drug-dealer variety. In January of 2016 observant semi-homeless man Matthew Hay-Chapman spotted one of three escaped convicts from an Orange County prison waiting in line for coffee at that very restaurant. Hay-Chapman alerted police, who nabbed two of the three convicts (the third had turned himself in the day before).

Hay-Chapman ended up collecting a six-figure reward for his actions. That case was recently back in the news when a video made by one of the escaped convicts during their brief bout on the outside was released to the media, in which the two escapees arrested in SF celebrate their soon-to-end freedom.

The intersection of Haight and Ashbury Streets — thought of by many as ground zero of the now 50-year-old Summer of Love, was home to a much less loving encounter Monday night, the San Francisco Police Department reports.

Police say that a Park Station officer on patrol came across a 61-year-old man with a significant laceration on his face at around 8 p.m. Monday

When asked what happened by the police officer, the man responded that he was "beat up" by a man in his 50s at the famous intersection.

The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries, which police say are not life threatening.

Police say that they were unable to locate the suspect in the aggravated assault. As of Tuesday morning, no arrests have been made and the suspect remains at large.

Rageful Driver Attacks Woman As She Directs Haight Street Traffic

The suspect remains at large.

SF News

crime

haight

lower haight

road rage

sfpd

Eve Batey

The San Francisco Police Department is seeking a violent driver today, after the man allegedly attacked a construction worker who was directing traffic in the Lower Haight.

NBC Bay Area has the tale, reporting that a female construction worker who was directing traffic near Haight and Steiner Streets was attacked by a male driver as she tried to do her job.

According to NBC, "The worker, who did not want to be identified, said words were exchanged, and then the driver got out of his car"

"He shoved me first; I went down, grabbed his T-shirt. After that, swing, swing, swing," the victim said. "I have brusies on my back, my ribs and stomach...That's where he was hitting me."

Two men who were driving past saw the altercation, with one telling NBC that "We were surprised more people weren't helping, and we had to put the car in park to help."

As the men and other passers-by intervened on her behalf, the suspect apparently fled -- but not before witnesses got photos of the man, photos that were then turned over to responding officers with the SFPD.

She then finished her shift, NBC reports.

Police say that they are now actively seeking the suspect, but as of publication time no arrests had been announced by the SFPD.

A man walking on a Haight-area block was the victim of a random attack Wednesday afternoon, when a stranger attacked him with a knife as he walked down Stanyan Street.

Police say that the stabbing occurred at 1:10 p.m. Thursday, on the 700 block of Stanyan, which is between Waller and Haight Streets.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, whose Park Station is just steps from the site of the attack, the 35-year-old victim was walking on Stanyan when the suspect, a man who appeared to be in his mid-20s, came up from behind the victim and stabbed him.

The attack was not provoked, the SFPD emphasizes, and the suspect "is not known to" the victim.

The victim was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, for treatment of injuries police say are not life-threatening. The suspect fled on foot, police say, and remains at large as of publication time.
