Breaking: Newsom Drops Out of Governor's Race

Newsom's out. Here is the official press release.

Rumor Mill: Newsom Dropping Out of Governor's Race?

Speculation time, folks! Los Angeles politics blog Mayor Sam's Sister City reports that SF Mayor Gavin Newsom will (allegedly!) announce his withdrawl from the California gubernatorial race this afternoon. Mayor Sam says:

We don't really think the narration for this new Gav-for-Governor spot is the *strongest* bit of campaign ad copy we've ever heard. And is it wrong to say the whole circular thing ("...that will join the race, that will shake the system, that will change the state Constitution...") reminds us of that late 80s anti-drug ad with the business guy in the toilet going, "So I can work harder, so I can make more money, so I can do more cocaine, so I can work harder..."?

Oh oh. It's on.

Eric Jaye "Resigns" from Team Newsom

Eric Jaye, Mayor Gavin Newsom's campaign manager, quit Newsom's gubernatorial campaign today. Why? Who knows why, exactly. Jaye, who has seen Newsom through Care Not Cash to "whether you like it or not" to battles with sweet Peruvian flake, "has been pushing a campaign strategy that would keep Newsom in the public's eye with media events on everything from green energy to food policy," report Matier & Ross. But Newsom's new strategist, Garry South, former adviser to failed Gov. Gray Davis, M&R go on to say, "has been advocating a more traditional approach that would depend on Newsom working the phones and raising money."
