The books at his APE booth follow an industry trend we really dig: they're several issues worth of stories bound in smaller-sized digests, perfect for toting around. We picked up volume one of the Courtney Crumrin story (Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things) and we really dug it. A girl with a rather testy attitude moves into a creepy mansion in a weird town and finds herself mired in several supernatural dilemmas. It's the perfect all-ages book: adult and kids alike will enjoy the story, while the adults will surely pick up on a more subversive vibe. The digests run about $12 each, and are available wherever Oni Press products are carried (which should be any good specialty comic store).

The book is the story of a high school populated by superheroes, or, specifically, the remedial class therein, as seen through the eyes of the main character "Special" Ed. It's an extremely funny twist on "hero high" stories like the X-Men and Sky High. We particularly enjoyed the remedial class teacher, "Dr. Zero," a retired, Dr. Doom-style villain that talks in a grandiose, megalomaniacal, third-person manner as he lectures his students.
"Comics are a rough business," he shared with us, but, in explaining the book's appeal, said that "Special Ed is an underdog story more than anything." The book's developed a fan base through word of mouth and Internet channels, notably comic-book-related podcast/Web community Comic Geek Speak, which has helped spurred sales. Mr. Dwonch is also a podcaster himself, one of the hosts of The Geeks Savants Podcast.

Speaking of Dave Dwonch -- did you know that there's a comic book publisher that calls Oakland home? It's the National Press Comics Group, and Jaimel M. Hemphill is its Editor-in-Chief.

In front of us was some woman who just couldn't get warm no matter how hard she tried. She'd shift around in her chair, lie down and then sit back up, and add layer after layer of clothes. The moment we'd adjust to her adjustment, she'd adjust herself once again. Then there were the gaggle of girls a little bit farther ahead of us. As far as we could tell, they didn't watch any part of the movie and spent the entire two hours having rather animated conversations and gossiping. Besides angering our inner cineaste ("this is the scene where all the faces melt, how could you not watch!?") we just couldn't get over the fact that it didn't occur to them that if all they wanted to do was talk and drink wine, doing so in a huge park full of maybe a thousand people watching a movie might not be the best place for it. It didn't help that one of the girls, the one directly in our line of view, would move back and forth between leaning in to share some particularly juicy insight or lean back to laugh in hysterics at her friend's bon mots every other minute. We had finally adjusted to the lady right in front of us for the umpteenth time only to have the girl move in and out of our line of sight.

And yes, we're cranky, bitter old men. If we were smart, we'd organize some sort of neighborhood group that would complain about all the increased traffic and noise into our neighborhood and how showing movies in Dolores Park just isn't Mission enough and might bring in people who don't live in the Mission. Maybe even people from Walnut Creek!

But we won't. Because it was still pretty darn cool and we still had a great time. Video geeks are descending on San Francisco this weekend for Vloggercon 2006 (or 'video blogger conference' if you're not a fan of tech neologisms). It was inspired by Webzine and the original Vloggercon in New York City last year. The daytime events at the Swedish American Hall are booked solid, but tonight there will be a "Meet the Vloggers" event at the Apple Store which is open to the public (likely followed by drinks at the House of Shields), and there are plenty of other satellite events.

Friend of SFist and Geek Entertainment Television superstar Irina Slutsky will be MCing on Saturday along with Echoplex Park's Schlomo Rabinowitz, so we asked her what she's looking forward to:

Mostly I want to be on the mic. Schlomo and I are emceeing on Saturday, so we get to do the whole "who's on first, jew's on second" schtick that comes so naturally to us. Which means we try to keep the boring parts funny and the fun parts running smoothly. And Schlomo is in charge of making me be quiet when it's time. I'm also "in charge" of the press, which means they get to come in if they promise to write about us and spell my name properly. I'm looking for talent too -- I want to see who is good for some ideas we have for future. Or just cute boys I can pretend to interview with the camera off to save batteries for real work.
Her GETV colleague Eddie Codel added, "If I can walk away with some new ideas and inspiration I'll be more than happy. I see this as a chance to rub brains with other creative video types." So if you've got a video camera, or want to take a shot at being the next viral superstar on YouTube, come to the party! Or at least check out some of the content that'll be uploaded and discussed over the course of the weekend.

Tasty Tatts

Stacey over at Contraversion links to <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2005/03/24/magazine/20050327_TATTOO_SLIDESHOW_1.html...

SF Restaurants, Food & Drink

Alice Waters

Eventually I

Food+Fun

Geek

James Beard

New York

New York Times

San Francisco

jackson

The picture you're looking at is not the work of some photoshop geek. That is a real tattoo on the arm of a real chef who obviously adores Alice Waters. Why? Chef Nino Mancari of Delaware's Fish On! explains: ''I wanted to do a tribute to American food...'Eventually I'll get James and Julia, and with Alice it'll be the holy trinity.''

Save space on your back for James Beard, Nino. And your ducats. You're going to be in the chair for a long time, and that's just for the bust. San Francisco's Robbie Lewis, of Jardiniere also makes the spread. Anyway, can famous chef tatts be considered for BMEZINE's Geek Tattoo page? We think they should be.

Art critic and photographer Claudine, who has been something of a modern-day Chalfant or Ahern by cataloging photos of graffitti pieces throughout the city, left a comment in our Get Ur Geek On: Warbussing EssEff piece where we had posted a picture of his trademark frog on the mural space at Galeria de la Raza. She tipped us to a debate about the piece over at Flickr brought on by a posting at the gallery shop taking Ribity to task for defacing the billboard space, which often features some pretty exciting work (and is often tagged by others as well). The post reads:

OPEN LETTER TO RIBITY

Ribity:

Graffiti is an important expression of urban culture. However, now that you have made it a habit of defacing this billboard, sponsored by Galeria de la Raza, a community art space, we REALLY wonder about your PRIORITIES:

By tagging our murals, the only thing one can think is that you are a narcissist prick.

You have already damaged $2,000 worth of property. This constitutes a felony.

You choose a very "accessible" target. Don't you have more challenging goals?

We don't expect much self-reflection on your behalf. Don't you think that it's really poor judgement to tag murals created by other artists?

What do you think it means to tag a non-profit community art space?

That is one ugly frog.

We hope you develop better drawing skills and better judgement.

Best,
Galeria de la Raza and friends

P.S. We can easily find out who you are. If you do not stop tagging, we will prosecute you. Now that you are 18, you are liable.

We have to admit that when we first saw the bomb, the piece there had been up for a while and seemed to have been torn at before he threw up on the wall, but can't be sure. Needless to say, we liked seeing his frog around the neighborhood (where we live) but now admit that we're questioning his judgement, as well. If you want to take it up with the San Francisco Department of Public Works, you can call 28-CLEAN or email them.

Is it time for a change in format? After a mere three months? And is it okay that it's just some dude with a made-up, eight-syllable name that's guiding you through the SF coffee scene?

There's a whole world of coffee that fits snugly into your usual SFist favorites. Y'know, like Get Ur (Coffee) Geek On. Or a multitude of stories that could fit in a Coffee Blotter. Trimethyldioxypurist cares? Staggering Through Caffeine? SFist Reads: Coffee Table Book Edition? Or maybe just commenting, with our usual snarkiness, on the general caffeine-related news and industry trends. That kinda thing.

But, no. This is SFist, not the latest Nick Denton creation. We're vertical here, not horizontal. Meaning it's gotta be about our fair San Francisco Bay Area and its cities. So our format remains.
