Hop on BART and head to Oakland this June for the agency’s all-ages ‘80s meets under-the-sea themed dance party, which will be held in the Rockridge Station parking lot.

After the popularity of Bay Area Rapid Transit’s May the 4th and Valentine’s Day events, which typically sell out the same day tickets go on sale, the agency just announced it’s transforming the Rockridge Station parking lot on June 6 into BART Prom: Enchantment Under the C Line, an all-ages 1980s-themed dance party with under-the-sea flair.

“BART Prom is a playful way to celebrate transit as a community space. Events like this tap into the joy and connection that public transit can create,” Michelle Robertson, BART’s principal marketing representative, told the Chronicle. “Our events generate enthusiasm for the system, build ridership and encourage people to ride for fun, all while reminding our community that BART is more than a commute — it’s part of the cultural life of the Bay Area.”

The event will feature a live band and DJ, as well as a BART prom court, which will be crowned during the event. For a chance to be on the court and win your very own BART-themed crown, post your BART “promposal” on social media and tag the agency by May 31.

Three finalists will be selected, and the public will pick a winner via Instagram. So keep an eye out for various fun and creative promposals in the coming month.

The event page says BART chose the 1980s theme because the decade was a pinnacle time for the agency — when ridership numbers were high, service was expanded, and the original train cars were still new.

Attendees are asked to wear themed prom attire that’s under-the-sea, 1980s, or any era — as long as it's appropriate for all age groups.

The $15 entry fee includes unlimited punch, a BART boutonniere or corsage, and a printed prom photo keepsake.

The Bay Area played host to a variety of Earth Day activities this weekend, including BART’s nature walks, the 2025 Climate Action Youth Summit, and the Green Business Expo and Earth Day Festival. Plus, a citywide cleanup with Refuse Refuse is coming up on Tuesday.

On Friday, more than 3,000 people gathered at Yerba Buena Gardens for San Francisco Environment’s second annual Climate Action Youth Summit, where students from across the city presented creative climate solutions through art, science, fashion, and performance. Centered around the theme “Climate Action Across Careers,” the event invited youth to explore how any profession can support environmental progress.

With twice as many student-led presentations as last year, the day was filled with inspiring ideas and innovations. A standout showcase came from Jefferson Elementary students, who collected 85 pounds of trash at school in just four days—an effort that helped them become the first plastic-free school in the district.

On Saturday, BART hosted two Nature Walks starting at 19th Street Station and circling Lake Merritt, led by conservationist Jeff Miller, author of Bay Area Wildlife: An Irreverent Guide.

Participants spotted local wildlife and discussed habitat loss, land-use history, and resilience. The nature walks were the first in a new series of free outdoor excursions aimed at encouraging Bay Area residents to use BART to explore the region’s natural landscape. Also on Saturday, San Francisco Environment hosted the Green Business Expo and Earth Day Festival, where attendees browsed booths from certified green businesses, played games, listened to live music by teen band Swami 3, and enjoyed activities like tree planting demos and biodiversity tours. The festival spotlighted eco-friendly innovations such as plant-based gel nail polish from local company Lilaque and hands-on learning with live snakes from Tree Frog Treks.

Earth Day festivities continue through the week with a full roster of events as part of SF Climate Week. Additionally, grassroots volunteer group, Refuse Refuse, is hosting a day-long cleanup that covers all of downtown and SoMa on Tuesday, along with cleanups in various neighborhoods throughout the week. The group organizes weekly neighborhood cleanups year-round.

Thursday

• Nerd Nite SF celebrates its 150th show at the Rickshaw Stop this month. Explore the universe, unravel modern evil, and debunk pelvic health myths in one unforgettable evening. • Historian Linda Day’s Hot Pads, Cool Town: Living in the 1920s walking tour delves into the Tenderoin’s post-1906 rebirth through its architecture and vibrant nightlife. Learn how residents “lived large” in small spaces, creating a rich cultural scene in early 20th-century San Francisco. (You’re sure to see many Rousseau buildings along the route.) Tour tickets also include admission to the Tenderloin Museum.
• Celebrate Earth Day at Yerba Buena Gardens on April 19 with live music, hands-on eco-activities, and a Green Business Expo featuring local sustainable vendors. Enjoy family-friendly fun like tree planting, nature tours, and giveaways. Free and open to all—RSVP encouraged!
• Sea-loving youngsters should head to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park for Junior Park Ranger Day, a free day of hands-on fun exploring maritime history and culture. Sunday

Sunday is jam-packed with a slew of the usual spring festivals and Easter events, including the Cherry Blossom Parade and Festival, Bring Your Own Big Wheel Race, and the beloved Hunky Jesus Contest.

• While 420 was canceled at Hippie Hill, there’s an adults-only 420 Easter egg hunt over in Oakland on Sunday as part of the Spirituality & Beyond 5 + Oakland Psychedelic Conference. This two-day gathering at the Kaiser Center features psychedelic pioneers, spiritual leaders, and community voices exploring the intersection of consciousness, culture, and plant medicine. Expect keynotes, cannabis-friendly zones, and a free outdoor fair with vendors and live programming.

• Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI has acquired X in an all-stock deal, officially “intertwining” the two companies. “Today, we officially take the step to combine the data, models, compute, distribution and talent,” said Musk. [TechCrunch]
• The measles vaccination rate of Santa Cruz kindergarteners is at 91%, which is well below the recommended threshold of 95%. Most of the Bay Area has an average of 97.8–99%, except for Alameda, which is at 96.4%. [Mercury News]
• The Sex Pistols are playing the Warfield on October 15 as part of the band's first US tour since 2003. Tickets go on sale April 4 to see the band perform Never Mind the Bollocks in its entirety, plus other material. [KQED]
• Activists and victims' families held a rally outside the sheriff’s office in Martinez on Friday afternoon over the early release of former Danville police officer Andrew Hall who was sentenced in 2022 to six years in state prison for shooting and killing 33-year-old Laudemer Arboleda after a slow-speed police pursuit in 2018. The charges reportedly weren’t filed until 2021 after Hall gained widespread attention for shooting and killing 32-year-old Tyrell Wilson, for which charges were never brought against Hall. [KRON4]
• The Chronicle’s Peter Hartlaub tried out BART’s increasingly popular and arduous speedrun challenge, which takes eight hours, covers all 50 BART stations, and must be done in the shortest time possible. [Chronicle]

National:

• Believe it or not, a Fyre Fest 2 is reportedly scheduled for this summer, and people are paying upwards of $1,400 per ticket. In true fashion, the festival was suspiciously moved from its original location on Mexico's Isla Mujeres to Playa Del Carmen after Isla Mujeres officials reportedly said they were unaware of the festival taking place. • The Trump administration announced plans to cut all remaining USAID staff in positions that aren't required by law. Historically, the USAID has played a crucial role in coordinating disaster relief efforts, such as the 7.7 earthquake that hit Thailand and Myanmar on Thursday. [Reuters]
• A Georgia woman who had a miscarriage was arrested when she was found unconscious and bleeding outside her apartment, and the remains of the fetus were retrieved by a "witness" from the complex’s trash dumpster. Both Jezebel and the Georgia Sun are awaiting comment from local authorities on what the official protocol is for disposing of materials produced by an innate bodily function. [Jezebel]

Night of Ideas, a free, global “nocturnal arts and culture marathon,” which brings together leading scholars, activists, and artists for a night of performances and activities, will take place on April 5 in SF’s Civic Center, with a family program earlier in the afternoon.

This year’s Night of Ideas theme, “(Un)Common Ground,” dives into what unites communities—exploring real connections in a digital world, dialogue in a divided society, and ways to protect our planet in the face of extreme weather.

The event will include a wide array of discussions, performances, and interactive activities (see a PDF of the lineup here) including dance-along ballet, drag story hour, and a puppet show during the family program, and a BART fashion show, zine-making and screenwriting workshops, lip-syncing with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and a slew of panels and performances later in the evening.

The family program will be at the Main Library from 4–6pm, with food trucks starting at 5pm at the newly illuminated Fulton Plaza. The main portion of the event will be from 7pm until 1am throughout Civic Center, including the Main Library, Fulton Plaza, and the Asian Art Museum.

The event is free, but registration is encouraged.

Night of Ideas is organized by Villa Albertine San Francisco, KQED, the Asian Art Museum, and the San Francisco Public Library, with artistic curation by Circuit Network.

Pi Day, which was founded at the Exploratorium here in San Francisco, falls on Friday this year. Plus, some special lunar eclipse viewing parties are happening at Lawrence Hall of Science and Chabot Space and Science Center on Thursday.

Pi Day:

• Math enthusiasts have a couple of options for Pi Day, including the Exploratorium's 38th annual celebration, featuring an array of hands-on, pi-inspired activities, as well as a Pi Parade led by brass band Mission Delirium — all topped off with a free slice of pie. There will also be a limited number of Moon Pies in celebration of the lunar eclipse.
• Free peasant pies will be served at 111 Minna for public radio station KALW's special live Science Friday event. Science Friday host Ira Flatow and Ethan Elkind, host of KALW's State of the Bay and Climate Break, will discuss with a panel of guest speakers the science world's role in tackling climate change and creating solutions.

Viewing the Lunar Eclipse:

• Both Lawrence Hall of Science and Chabot Space and Science Center are hosting late-night watch parties for the total lunar eclipse, also known as the Blood Moon, which is visible in the United States for the first time since 2022.
• The eclipse will be visible starting at 10 p.m. on Thursday with the peak happening between 11:26 p.m. and 12:31 a.m. Here's how you can view the eclipse from home.

Fat Tuesday is next week with a free all-ages Mardi Gras festival in the Fillmore and performances by Mission Delirium and New Orleans' Rebirth Brass Band in the Mission. SFist takes a closer look at a few local brass bands that have influenced the scene through the years.

Fillmore Street will be the main place to be on Fat Tuesday with the district’s 18th annual Mardi Gras celebration, featuring a New Orleans-style processional led by the David Hardiman Line Band, followed by a free community blues concert with the popular Curtis Family Notes and Niecy Living Single.

David Hardiman's history in the Bay Area music scene spans decades. Hardiman played with the Golden Gate Park Band for 20 years starting in the mid-'70s, partially in an effort to provide some much-needed Black representation to the band. Around the same time, Hardiman also founded his ongoing project, the San Francisco All-Star Big Band, which features musicians who played with Count Basie and Duke Ellington, among other legends.

Yesterday, SFist noted that the Brass Liberation Orchestra (BLO) showed up to last Saturday's protest at the Tesla showroom, where they added some extra oomph to chants such as, "People over profit, stop the coup!" and generally elevated the camaraderie of the event.

BLO has been serving as a political protest band since the early 2000s starting with anti-Iraq War protests, followed by the Occupy movement and later the Muslim ban protests at SFO.

Members of the BLO also perform with the group Mission Delirium (among many others), who are performing at Curio in the Mission on Tuesday night. The Rebirth Brass Band will be performing at the Chapel later in the evening.

The 2017 airport protest wasn’t the only time this author randomly caught some impromptu brass band action.

In October of 2023, on a dark, dark night at Warm Water Cove in the Dogpatch, several people holding instruments briefly emerged from the shadows before receding back into the dark and launching into a stellar performance, prompting us to dance to what felt like imaginary musicians:

The very first time SFist caught a brass band performance on video was at Cellspace in 2001 when Extra Action Marching Band took over the space and had us in awe. Members of Extra Action can reportedly be found performing with Brass Liberation Orchestra and Mission Delirium these days:

AS THE WHEEL TURNS: BEGINNING POTTER'S WHEEL: The JCCSF is kicking off a new batch of pottery classes starting next week. It's a once-a-week-for-six-weeks class that will teach you how to throw bowls, plates, and cups on a pottery wheel. As the title suggests, this one's for beginners, but the class description says if you've got some experience, you're still welcome to check things out and possibly work independently. PAWTRERO'S DOG DAY AFTERNOON: Spend your Sunday with some super good pups. It's Pawtrero's adoption street fair, where you can meet some really adorable rescue pets while helping out a good cause. They're offering pet photography, a pet costume contest, and pet caricatures, all to raise money to support 16 different cat and dog rescue organizations. It sounds like more names will get added to the lineup for a November 9 benefit concert to raise money for North Bay wildfire relief efforts, but we know for now that Bay Area hometown band Metallica will be headlining along with Dave Matthews, whose Dreaming Tree Winery in Geyserville was evacuated and threatened by the Pocket Fire. We heard the rumor about the concert taking shape from Willie Brown on Sunday, who said that Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and tech investor Ron Conway were involved. And now the Chronicle confirms that yes, they met with Tipping Point founder Daniel Lurie, Giants President Larry Baer, Jeff Lawson of Twilio, Twitter CFO Ned Siegel, and Rabbi Ryan Bauer of Congregation Emanu-El on October 15 to discuss what they could do to aid victims of the fires, who will be dealing with is after-effects for years to come. The concert was what they landed upon.

"We're there to help as much as we can, and this is how we do it, through music," says Metallica frontman James Hetfield in the promo video above.

The concert fundraiser, dubbed Band Together Bay Area, will happen in AT&T Park on November 9, shortly following Salesforce's Dreamforce conference which will be using the stadium for its annual concert for conference attendees on November 7 — featuring Lenny Kravitz and Alicia Keys. Benioff told the Chronicle that his company will simply leave their concert set-up in place two extra days to accomodate the benefit. Tickets (starting at $49.50) go on sale Friday via Ticketmaster, and Ticketmaster has pledged to donate all processing fees back to the relief fund. Note that many of the prime seats in the stadium are being reserved for first responders and affected families, which could end up being a lot of seats.

All proceeds will go directly to short-, intermediate, and long-term assistance for low-income communities affected by the fires, in three phases, with all funds distributed by December 2018 through the Tipping Point Emergency Relief Fund. If you like, you can also just donate here. The fund has already collected $6.5 million and $1.5 million has already been distributed to Community Foundation Sonoma, Napa Valley Community Foundation, and North Bay Fire Relief.

Also on the bill as of now is Oakland-born rapper G-Eazy, who tells the Chron, "My heart goes out to all those affected by the devastating fires. The Bay Area is forever my home, my heart and soul, and it hurts to see so many people lose everything."

Collaborating on producing the show are usual rivals Another Planet Entertainment and Live Nation.

According to Brown, when he heard the original rumor, the goal was to raise between $35 million and $50 million.

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett tells the Chronicle that the Nuns Fire came right up to the front gate of his Mission Highlands home in Sonoma. "It’s brutal. The mental and psychological toll is what I always think about," he says.

Since the air quality in San Francisco and Oakland is dropping fast as a result of fire smoke being blown down from the North Bay, it's probably best to stay indoors for a little while — or at least don't go running or do any aerobic activities until things improve. NVM (NEVER-MIND), IMMERSIVE ART EXHIBITION: Though yesterday was World Mental Health Day, this immersive art exhibition taking place from Thursday to Friday this week aims to explore mental health issues through installation and performance art. There are three separate installations, according to the event description. The opening reception should be worth checking out, too, as they promise DJs, live dance performances, and a pop up kitchen. OPERA MEETS EDM: Operatronica is a new pop-up event being held by SF Opera's Adler Fellows, and it features DJ sets punctuated by arias, and then some blending of the two using samples of arias. (See SFist's interview with performer and organizer Anthony Reed.) It's a unique event and opportunity to hear some of the up-and-comers training with SF Opera. FALL FILM FESTIVAL: A GHOST STORY: PROXY and HERE FOR NOW continue their fall film festival, this time celebrating Friday the 13th with a showing of A Ghost Story. It stars Casey Affleck as a ghost (replete with eye hole-fitted bed sheet), trying to console his widow, Rooney Mara. The film deals with issues of loss and connection, and is a pretty good sight to behold. Proxy SF, Octavia Street between Hayes Street and Fell Street, 7:30 p.m., free

MAKING LUCK: A COMEDY FUNDRAISER FOR REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS: If you're looking for a little comedy action, check this one out. Not only does it feature local comics, it also supports a great cause. Hot Take Comedy has teamed up with local non-profit, Refugee Transitions to host a benefit gig where proceeds will go to help Refugee Transitions. They work to serve "high-need, low-income refugee, asylee, and immigrant newcomers who have experienced forced migration due to war, violence, or economic duress," according to the description on the website. MORTIFIED: Listen, we've all had that moment where we looked back over the things we wrote in our diaries and journals (or LiveJournals) back in high school, right? Some people read those things and think, "Oh no, I have to burn all evidence of this." The people who read for Mortified, though? They think, "Oh no, I have to share this with the world." Watch as adults bare their past young, adolescent souls out on stage, opting to do nothing more than just chagrin and bear it. Have you developed a taste for the brown liquors? Then you might want to grab a last-minute ticket to WhiskyFest, the annual bacchanal thrown by Whisky Advocate magazine where distillers from around the country (and the globe) bring their bourbons, ryes, scotches and more for the whiskey-loving masses to sample. The pours are small because, obviously, you want to taste as many things as you can before your palate is completely blown or you're completely hammered, whichever comes first. But it's always a party after the first half hour or so when everyone's tasted a bunch of booze and starts getting chatty.

Over 400 whiskeys and other spirits will be poured, and you can see the full list here.

There's food, too, catered by the Marriott — the event takes place in one of their subterranean ballrooms — so you can give all that whiskey a base upon which to sit.

And you can count on lines for the most sought-after cult bourbons, scotches, and Japanese whiskeys, like super-aged bottles of Pappy Van Winkle — the frenzy around which inspired a whole episode of the podcast Criminal — or rare bottles of Hibiki or Whistle Pig.

Typically there are also a few high-end rums and Cognacs for sampling as well, and starting at 7 PM there are a series of seminars you can attend typically centered around one type of spirit, like a tasting of varieties of Japanese whiskey.

VIP tickets, which get you in an hour early (some of the rarest stuff goes fast), are sold out. But if you're looking for something to do this evening, you can find general admission tickets here (they're $275 apiece).

Nothing makes sense. The world is pretty awful. Nevertheless it's another pretty Indian Summer week in San Francisco, and we are muddling through. B-MOVIE VERSION OF 'THE BIRDS': This week's Weird Wednesdays feature at Alamo Drafthouse is from not so long ago, 2010, and Vietnamese-American filmmaker James Nguyen. Birdemic: Shock and Terror, as Alamo puts it, is "the most discussed and analyzed avian disaster film since The Birds," and like The Birds it involves a Northern California town besieged by homicidal birds. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, LIVE!: It's time for some all new episodes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the supernatural-themed but campy 90s TV show, restaged with extra camp, in drag, at Oasis. DOG RESCUE BENEFIT FEAT. EMMYLOU HARRIS: Just ahead of their performances for Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle will be headlining Bummer's Ball, a fundraiser for Rocket Dog Rescue on the Upper Floor at the Armory. It's named for Bummer of Bummer and Lazarus, arguably SF's most famous stray dogs, and legendary pals with Emperor Norton. FLEET WEEK AIR SHOW & PARADE OF SHIPS: It's once again time to celebrate the military! You'll be hearing the Blue Angels criss-crossing the city all weekend long starting on Friday afternoon, which could make for some annoying conflicts with Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. And starting Friday morning you can head out to Crissy Field or the Golden Gate Bridge to watch the Parade of Ships, which will include the USS ESSEX (LHD 2), USS DEWEY (DDG 105), USCGC MIDGETT (WHEC 726), HMCS WINNIPED (PPH 338) and the USACE MV JOHN A.B. HIGH SCHOOL BAND COMPETITION: Fleet Week festivities wrap up with this event at the Golden Gate Park Band Shell that opens with the US Marine Corps Band, and then various Bay Area high school bands compete for prize money. Golden Gate Park Band Shell, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., free

A fun run that originated in Seattle is debuting in SF in November, and it's basically Bay to Breakers for the less ambitious, minus the people who actually run, with the addition of doughnut stations in place of water stations.

SFGate has the news of the Lard Butt 1K, which started out as a joke among friends who were commiserating about how they didn't do much exercise after college, and this led to a Lard Butt apparel line, and a 1K (0.62 mile) "race" event that's now happened twice in Seattle.

Costumes are encouraged. There is a beer garden at the end. Actual runners are shouted at with calls of "Slow down!" A wave of runners/walkers weighing 250 pounds or more is called the "Legends Wave." And along the way: doughnuts.

"This is a race for the rest of us," says Lard Butt co-founder Mark Peterson to the Gate, apparently unaware of our Bay to Breakers tradition. "There are so many races, historically, that have been focused on running, competing and winning. This is a unique event in that there is absolutely nothing at stake, we don't time it: there's no first place or last place."

In the race FAQ's they're asked if this is supposed to be an event mocking big people, and they say, "No, we're poking fun at ourselves and our fellow below-average athletes everywhere. Lard Butts exist in all shapes and sizes and we welcome all comers. In fact, if we see anyone at the event who's being mean-spirited, we'll have them removed from the premises — and only after we sit on them first!"

The first SF Lard Butt 1K is happening November 4 at Lake Merced Park, and advance registration is $30, with a $40 registration fee day of. The beer (and mimosa) garden opens at 8:30 a.m., and the "race" kicks off at 9:30 a.m.
