These grants, awarded under the Biden administration, ranged from $10,000 to $85,000 and totaled over $2.5 million for local groups.

As East Bay Times reports, the canceled grants reflect a dramatic shift in NEA priorities—now favoring projects tied to “American heritage” themes like the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, AI training, and support for veterans, churches, and Tribal communities. Many affected Bay Area groups say the cuts feel politically motivated, excluding projects highlighting diversity, equity, inclusion, and works by minority and LGBTQ+ communities.

For example, Opera San Jose lost a $25,000 grant for its bilingual production of Zorro, despite the NEA’s stated goal of supporting Hispanic-serving institutions. Similarly, Oakland’s Omnira Institute had a $10,000 grant withdrawn for its Black-Eyed Pea Festival celebrating Black music and art.

Smaller nonprofits are especially vulnerable. The Oakland Theater Project lost half of a $30,000 two-year grant that was intended to fund a world premiere stage adaptation of Moby-Dick, forcing the company to reconsider its production ambitions. San Jose Taiko’s $25,000 grant for educational videos was also rescinded, though the group plans to appeal.

In addition to the NEA cuts, AmeriCorps recently announced deep reductions in funding for service programs that many Bay Area nonprofits depend on, as reported by KQED. AmeriCorps supports community engagement initiatives, volunteer coordination, and educational outreach that often serve as lifelines for smaller cultural organizations. The cuts threaten to reduce staff capacity, limit programming, and hamper outreach efforts at a time when community connection is vital.

Local nonprofits that rely on AmeriCorps members to help with youth arts education, event staffing, and community workshops are bracing for the impact. Many groups warn that without this support, their ability to sustain ongoing projects and expand access to underserved audiences will be severely diminished.

San Francisco arts nonprofit Creativity Explored (CE) posted about the cuts on Instagram:

Over the years, AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) members have become part of the fabric of CE. Losing AmeriCorps means losing some of our capacity to take new risks and develop new programs that meet community needs. It also means losing a pipeline of passionate VISTAs who have often gone on to become supporters, partners, and even valued members of our staff. Design.

At the same time, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), has quietly rescinded millions in grant funding to small and midsize arts organizations. NEA funding doesn’t just support the arts—it fuels jobs, mentorship, visibility, and voice. It provides vital support to organizations large and small, established and cutting-edge, including work by artists with disabilities, BIPOC creatives, and emerging artists.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/DJraKtyvFwB/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF;
Here's a little taste of the Proposition 8 hearing coming up on Monday in San Francisco -- high-power attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies (conservative and liberal, respectively) just released a video about how the Prop 8 case mirrors the landmark case that legalized interracial marriage, 1967's Loving v. Virginia. The two attorneys (and unlikely allies) talk about how the Loving case set a major precedent for the current fight for same-sex marriage and civil rights.

Update I: Huh. We received several reports that, while trying to post the 'Loving' and the Fight for Marriage Equality video, Facebook blocks it. And, yes, it seems that Facebook is blocking the pro-gay marriage video. Behold:

<img alt=""Loving" and the Fight for Marriage Equality [Updated]" src="http://img.sfist.com/attachments/SFist_Brock/facebookblocksprop8.jpg" width="548" height="301" class="image-center">

She was talking about having challenging talks with potential allies who still need some winning-over, but she might as well have been referring to the event itself. It was, by the standards of consensus-happy San Francisco, a pretty tough room.

Onstage were a handful of folks who held varying levels of responsibility for Prop 8, and were now exhibiting varying levels of sheepishness. Mark Leno, Tom Ammiano, and Andrea Shorter kicked things off with some nice words -- particularly well-received was Mark's observation that since the vote a few years ago, gay marriage is now 18 points closer to being the official will of the people, and those are 18 points that our enemies will never get back. There was a short introduction of the moderators (two local journalists) and the panelists (Field Director Dan Hawes, Campaign Manager Steve Smith, Director of API Equality Tawal Panyacosit, NCLR's Kate Kendall, and Equality California's Geoff Kors), and then the floor was opened to the generally irate public.

Kate Kendall, in our opinion, was a real charmer -- identifying mistakes, apologizing, speaking honestly while still exorcising diplomacy. On the other side of the charm chart was probably Steve Smith, who was casual and calm but matter-of-fact and not particularly contrite. He was particularly prone to using a tense we've heard called the "Past Exonerative": . For example, "it should have taken 36 to 48 hours" to respond to the ads about education, he said, but instead, "it took nine days." Oh, really, that's good to know, Mister Campaign Manager.

Steve also mentioned that he managed the No On Prop 4 campaign at the same time that he was working on No On Prop 8. What a busy guy! We wonder how he could possibly have found the time to simultaneously manage both high-profile projects. Must be really good at multitasking, amirite?

March 5 is the big day -- that's when the Supreme Court will hear arguments about Prop 8. You can read the schedule here. There's a lot of work to do before the hearing, and Equality California's prepping for the big day with five actions -- now's a crucial time to spread the word about how much pain Prop 8 will inflict when it takes away all those marriages. And the Peninsula Marriage Equality Coalition has a bunch of handy workshops coming up about how to persuade allies.

And speaking of spreading the word, an excellent article in this week's Stranger points out that a key component in achieving lasting civil equality is an educated electorate. To that end, we hope you're participating in Tell3, a brilliant campaign to educate your family and friends about why civil rights matter to you personally. "We used to think coming out would win us our rights," the site says. "Now we know it takes more than that." Get to work, everybody!

Oh this Prop 8 stuff just gets hairier and hairier. We were thumbing through some articles about the people who backed Prop 8; that includes groups like the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, which despite the word "liberty" in their name wants to wield control over California marriages -- every single one -- vetoing whichever couples they don't like. They plan to use Prop 8 to continue stopping marriages and to nullify the approximately 18,000 that they don't currently like -- and possibly more in the future. And the Amicus Brief that they filed in Prop 8's favor contained this scintillating quote:

"Although no one expects these religious adherents or their ministers to be required actually to conduct same-sex marriage ceremonies..."

Oh reeeeeeeally! Nice of you to say so. That's certainly at odds with the rhetoric during the campaign, when you assured frightened churchgoers that homosexuals were beating down churches' doors, demanding to be married by everyone in sight; and that Prop 8 was the only thing standing between ministers' freedom to choose whom to wed versus conscription into an chain gang of mandatory gay-marrying labor.

So. Nobody nobody expects ministers to be forced to marry anyone they want? Even the very people who were making that claim just a few weeks ago? Well, that's good to know. We'll keep it in mind.

The argument that the Becket fund makes, incidentally, is terrifying; and it doesn't just affect the gays, but all Californians. They claim that Prop 8 prevents "a systemic, irresolvable conflict between church and state," which is only true inasmuch as the "conflict" in question amounts to "we wanted to control California, and California tried to resist."

The people who crafted Prop 8 don't just want the freedom to choose which marriages they can recognize. They already had that freedom before Prop 8, and they admit as much in their brief. What they want is to control which marriages anyone can recognize.

Remember the other day, we told you about a bunch of new TV ads about how gay families can actually be pleasant and likable? Well, you'll be glad to hear that the spots aired all over California during Tuesday's inauguration, which is great -- except in Los Angeles on ABC-TV. According to the folks who produced the ads, they were told they were "too controversial to air during the Inauguration, since 'many families will be watching.'"

Yes. That's true. Many families were watching. And seeing homosexuals on TV can give families AIDS, so really, it's obvious that ABC made the right decision.

By the way, GetToKnowUsFirst.org is still accepting donations to keep their ads on the air, so if you want to subject even more families to those dangerously controversial, unfit-for-public-consumption homos, now's the time to take out your credit card.

With this week's slew of court filings, the post-Prop-8 fight for civil equality is still hot hot hot. And even though some of the 15-minutes-of-fame organizers may be losing focus, the pros aren't waiting for another election to reach out to voters.

Check out GetToKnowUsFirst.com (disclosure: it's run by a friend of a friend of SFist). They're putting together some attractive ready-for-television PSAs about the California families who deserve the rights and responsibilities of marriage -- including the 1,138 that they're currently denied.

They've worked out a smart media strategy for getting the ads into areas that need them most: counties that voted yes on Prop 8. GTKUF needs to raise funds to get the ads on TV -- and they need the funds right now. You can donate via Google Checkout, and your donation is tax-deductible. This one is a smart, worthy cause -- if you were wondering which post-Prop-8 groups deserve your financial support, look no further.

Last night's Marriage Equality Community Forum was neat! It started with a brief hello from former New Paltz mayor Jason West. We tried to get a picture, but as you can see, he is simply too dreamy and wonderful to be captured by normal photographic equipment.

The meeting was part of a statewide effort to collect data from everyone at a grassroots level. The "official" marriage activists want to compile an analysis of what went wrong and what went right. If you missed the meeting, you can still contribute -- just fill out the survey on Marriage Equality's site. Molly McKay, the forum's moderator, indicated that the report would be made public.

The evening was kicked off by some speakers: Shayna Gelender from the ACLU explained the current status of the legal challenge to Prop 8. Next, Andrea Shorter explained ... well, we're not sure. We like Andrea -- she's gentle and heartfelt -- but with all her dramatic pauses and lengthy digressions, we sometimes have trouble catching her meaning. And then finally, Sister Edith Myflesh (out of uniform!) talked about outreach. The protests were great, he said, but we need to take those demonstrations to other communities. "They need to see real queer people," he said, and mentioned an upcoming bus trip to Fresno. The audience audibly gasped.

And then, it was on with the discussions.

UPDATED: Conversation About Prop 8 and Race at GLBT Center was Teeniest, Tiniest, Ever-So-Slightest Bit Productive

Before we get to the nitty-gritty, we just want to make sure that everyone knows that tonight's Prop 8 town hall at the Veteran's Building has been postponed indefinitely. We'll let you know if there's an update on that. UPDATE! We've just received tons of new information about upcoming events. It's all pasted after the jump.

Everybody got it? Okay, good. Now, on to the details:

We'd say between 75 and 100 people showed up for the panel discussion "Prop 8 and Race: What's Next?" The title of the talk -- "what's next" -- is an excellent question, and it was only answered in the vaguest possible terms. Teamwork! Cooperation! Back-patting and thoughtful introspection! Outreach and community building! Oh, okay.

If there is a specific strategy for starting work on any of those lovely action items, we didn't hear it. And y'know, some of the people on the panel and in the audience were staffers on the official campaign. Hm. How is it that we keep finding ourselves in this fog?

But that's not to say that it was a total waste. If nothing else, the meeting accomplished a sort of consensus: that we must do more to address the problems of racism and homophobia, that blacks and gays should not be enemies, and that there's not a lot of use in playing the "who's suffering more" game. Of course, it's not hard to get a roomful of the most socially concerned people in San Francisco to agree that the world ought to be a peaceful place. But there's value in getting everyone on the same page, so nice work there.

After the jump: surprising news about the campaign, and our hero Luis.

HA HA HA Thousands of Gays Killed in the Holocaust HO HO HO HA HA HA HA

The people pushing Prop 8 have their heads so far up their asses they've turned into mobius strips.

misc

concentration camp

dub

election

equality

gay

hitler

holocaust

marriage

mormon

persecution

prop 8

YouTube

Matt Baume

But as commenters observe, you can't mention Hitler and homos in the same breath without remembering what ACTUALLY happened in World War Two: fifty thousand gays imprisoned, with estimates of around 10,000 gays killed in concentration camps. HA! HA! HA!

We do adore offensive humor when it works, because it is so impressive an accomplishment. Jokes about dictators are a tempting challenge because the author must attain a level of humor sufficient to overcome the audience's horror. For example, the over-the-top relationship between Satan and Saddam on South Park is initially shocking, but we breathe a sigh of happy relief when it becomes outlandish -- just as we do during the gleeful "Springtime for Hitler." But for satire to be permitted to land its blow, it must be both devastatingly funny and devastatingly true. It must accomplish, as Henri Bergson said, a "temporary anesthesia of the heart."

This video, on the other hand, fails to land a single joke, fails to ring true, and so fails to numb its pain. The video is not only guilty of being unfunny, as are most of these Hitler re-dubs; it specifically evokes the inescapable real-life persecution and murder of thousands of gays in the Holocaust. By reminding us of Hitler's extermination campaign, it invites an elephant into the room and then abandons it. And the elephant is so massive, so horrifying, that it defies comprehension.

It is the cruelest of memories that could possibly have been evoked in this campaign. And it is beyond shameful. It is evil.

We certainly don't want to join this video in issuing a surrender via Godwin. But by evoking Hitler's murder of thousands of gays -- a genocide motivated by religious convictions -- it is impossible not to observe which side of this argument is more vulnerable to unflattering historical comparison. We would not stoop to insinuate such a comparison ourselves; it is a comparison that, through their actions, has simply insinuated itself.

Prop 8 Weirdos Send Weird Letter Containing Weirdness

Is this a threatening letter?
Abbot & Associates, a realty company in San Diego, gave a generous chunk of change to the No On 8 campaign. (You should, too.) And then the Yes On 8 campaign wrote them a letter that is just freaking KA-RAZEE, demanding that Abbot & Associates .

"We respectfully request that Abbott & Associates withdraw its support of Equality California. Make a donation of a like amount to ProtectMarriage.com which will help us correct this error ... The names of any companies and organizations that choose not to donate in like manner to ProtectMarriage.com but have given to Equality California will be published. ... We will contact you shortly to discuss your contribution."

Wha wha whaaaa? Seriously? Check out the letter here. It's like something a mobster would insinuate. "Jimmy the Toe's gonna pay you a little visit in an unmarked van to have a little chat, vis-a-vis your making glad with the greenbacks." And indeed, Jim Abbott's son described it as "a bit 'mafioso.'"

Except that instead of threatening to put anyone on ice, they're threatening to "publish." No! No! Anything but publish! Indeed, charitable giving has become the Most Dangerous Game.

The "people" behind Prop 8 -- the anti-marriage amendment -- may or may not be up to something sneaky. We observed yesterday that their ads were showing up on Fog City Journal -- a site that, we suspected, wouldn't want anything to do with that sort of degenerate advertising. We were also surprised to see them on the otherwise-reputable FiveThirtyEight.com.

And now this: a gay blog ( gay) has accused the Prop 8 campaign of purposely buying Google ads on gay sites. This has resulted in bizarre situations such as the one pictured at left: where yes-on-8 messages appear next to a plea to defeat the ban.

We doubt that this is on purpose. If Prop 8 really wanted to spend its ad money effectively, why would it buy ads on sites where their lies are completely unwelcome? They probably intended to target sites that mention homosex, not sites that actively celebrate it; and because the ad placement is all automated, these little faux pas happened.

We're not sure who should be more uncomfortable here -- the nice bloggers whose sites are being sullied by deceitful, discriminatory advertisements; or the anti-marriage donors whose money is going into the pockets of gays and their allies.
very

Princess Gloves Come off in No On 8 Fight

A few days ago, there was a new ad released by the people backing Prop 8 (the ballot amendment that would allow an out-of-state group to veto whatever California marriages they want). So we've had to transcribe the good bits.

"The advertisement strongly implies that parents ... will have 'no right to object' to what is taught ... This is false. ... California's law ...clearly states that parents or guardians of public school children may excuse their children..."

"The Sacramento Superior Court clearly and firmly rejected that statement as 'false and misleading.'

'...state law does not school districts to teach anything about marriage or same-sex marriage at any grade level. Moreover, for those school districts that choose to include instruction ... they allow parents to excuse their children' ... We strongly urge you not to repeat those falsehoods."

Will the pushy memo have any effect? We want to say it probably will; but in our heart of hearts, we know it probably won't. Just like Fog City Journal, which is currently running some Yes On 8 ads of its own, the TV stations will probably be unmoved.

Update: The Sacramento Superior Court has ruled that the individual pictured at right is not, in fact, Richard Peterson. We will, however, continue to repeat the falsehood.
