Plenty of shows to get you through your Outside Lands hangover with lo-fi Pitchfork favorite Wavves at Rickshaw Stop Wednesday, Smiths-inspired locals The Magic Bullets at the California Academy of Sciences Thursday night and the previously profiled Man/Miracle at Hemlock Saturday.

Our featured act this week is The Splinters, who play Bottom of the Hill Wednesday with Woven Bones and The Sandwitches. The Oakland-based outfit make 1960's style garage-pop with a punk twist, complete with vocal harmonies, vintage-tinged riffs and plenty of sing-a-long moments. While we have enjoyed the bands recordings to date -- their debut full length Kick is littered with catchy moments, and their recently released 7" might just be their best effort yet -- it is in the group's live shows that have really won us over. This is easily one of the most entertaining and downright fun acts in the area. Sadly, 1/4 of The Splinters is set to relocate to NYC, meaning their local appearances will soon be few and far between -- be sure to catch them locally while you still can.

Several other show options in this unusually stacked week with local garage pop favorite Hunx and His Punx at Thee Parkside Thursday, the previously profiled Tussle at Amnesia Saturday and the jam packed Rock Make Festival all-day Sunday -- as always, be sure to consult the full showlist.

The Week Ahead: Bay Area Concerts 8/9 - 8/15

Yet another stacked week of shows with Vancouver-based chiller Teen Daze at Milk Thursday, hawt electronic act Part...

Arts & Entertainment

concert preview

epicsauce

week_ahead

Kevin Meenan

Yet another stacked week of shows with Vancouver-based chiller Teen Daze at Milk Thursday, hawt electronic act Party Effects at Mighty Friday and excellent local garage-rock favorites The Splinters at Amnesia Saturday.

Our pick for this week is Holy Ghost!, who play an Outside Lands Night Show at The Independent alongside Chromeo (DJ Set) this Sunday. Since 2007, the perennially hyped DFA-affiliated act have been churning out impressive disco-influenced remixes and originals in the vein of their mentor and label owner James Murphy. It was only this past May, however, that the duo officially stepped out of the studio and unveiled their six-member strong live band, complete horns, dueling drums and DFA standard issue cowbell. If their live set lives up to the recording, you can expect a dance party come Sunday. Need your James Murphy approved disco fix a little earlier in the week? The folks at Outside Lands have you covered again with a Herculus and the Love Affair night show at Mighty Friday.

Plenty of other show options this week including pysch-heavy locals Lumerians at Milk Wednesday, Portland's rising lo-fi favorite Ghost Animal at Hemlock Wednesday, experimental solo act SAFE at the YBCA happy hour Thursday and punk legend Jello Biafra at Great American Music Hall Saturday. And of course, Golden Gate Park has the trimmed down two-day Outside Lands Festival this weekend with Phoenix, Chromeo, The Soft Pack, Mayer Hawthorne, Electric Six and more.
A jam packed week of shows with Battlehooch at Rickshaw Stop Tuesday, the previously profiled Mi Ami at the Knockout Thursday (last show as a trio) and the previously profiled Thee Oh Sees at the Independent Saturday.

Our featured act this week, however, is Austin's Pure Ecstasy. While their reverb-drenched sound may not quite be new territory for the blog crowd, Pure Ecstasy's dreamy take on pop actually manages to stand out amongst the ever-crowding field of fellow hyped lo-fi acts. For proof, look no further than the trio's shockingly consistent string of 7" and cassette releases -- if they bring the same type of quality songwriting and raw production to their soon-to-be-released full length, you can expect their debut to appear on endless best of lists come December. You can catch Pure Ecstasy and their excellent fellow Texas-based tourmates Sleep Over at both 111 Minna Thursday and Amnesia Friday -- be sure to check the list below for full show details.

As always, there are plenty of other show options this week including the previously profiled Tussle at Eagle Tavern Thursday, comedic legend Neil Hamburger at Hemlock Saturday and the previously profiled Maus Haus at Rickshaw Stop Saturday.
Pure Ecstasy (photo by Guilia Mazza)

The Week Ahead: Bay Area Concerts 7/26 - 8/1

An absolutely packed week of shows with Twin Sister at Rickshaw Stop tonight, the <a href="http://sfist.com/2009/12/07/the_week_ahead_bay_area_conce...

Arts & Entertainment

concert preview

epicsauce

week_ahead

Kevin Meenan

An absolutely packed week of shows with Twin Sister at Rickshaw Stop tonight, the previously profiled Ty Segall at Amnesia Friday and Los Angeles-based beat wizard Baths with chillers Memoryhouse at Rickshaw Stop Saturday.

Our featured show this week, however, is The Night Marchers. If you ask us, indie musicians don't get much more prolific than John Reis. After finding initial success in the San Diego quartet Pitchfork, the Southern California legend went on to form not just one but three of the more influential bands of the 90s and early 00s -- Zeitgiest jukebox stalwarts Drive Like Jehu, garage-inspired punks Hot Snakes and MTV Buzz Bin darlings Rocket from the Crypt. With The Night Marchers, the 41-year-old veteran continues in the purist rock tradition he explored throughout his various incarnations -- above all else, you can look forward to Reis' unmatchable trademark swagger. The Night Marchers will be joined Tuesday by Obits, the latest project from Reis' ex-partner in crime Rick Froberg, making this the closest thing to a full on Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes reunion in years.

A huge week of live shows with rising local shoegaze quintet Young Prisms at Rickshaw Stop Tuesday, the previously profiled Maus Haus at Milk Thursday and the jam-packed All Shook Down Festival with SFist favorites Neon Indian, Ty Segall, Grass Widow and more Sunday.

Our pick for this week is Man/Miracle, who play a fundraiser for the all-around awesome local music resource (and registered non-profit) The Bay Bridged at the Verdi Club this Friday. We have more or less had the Oakland-based quartet's debut The Shape of Things on repeat since it was released late last year -- it is a stunning LP, packed with ten infectiously catchy would-be singles you will swear you have heard before. While the band's take on indie pop is admittedly all over the map, the go-to comparison here is undoubtedly Talking Heads, complete with the the David Byrne-esque crooning, danceable Afrobeat inspired backbone and endless sing-a-long choruses. With SF musical giants Thao Nguyn and John Vanderslide rounding out the bill there is no reason to miss this stacked all-local blowout.

Several other solid shows to choose from this week including Denver chillers Weed Diamond at Sub Mission Tuesday, the always enigmatic Nobunny at Bottom of the Hill Wednesday and local psych-infused quartet White Cloud at Hemlock Friday -- be sure to consult the full showlist.

The Week Ahead: Bay Area Concerts 7/12 - 7/18

Yet another packed week of shows with the previously profiled Ty Segall</a...

Arts & Entertainment

bands

concert preview

epicsauce

week_ahead

Kevin Meenan

Yet another packed week of shows with the previously profiled Ty Segall and Weekend at Milk Thursday, South Africa's tongue-in-cheek "rap-rave" trio Die Antwoord at Rickshaw Stop Friday and Ganglians, Fresh and Onlys, Grass Widow and more at the Mission Creek Festival's free all-ages rager at McLaren Park Saturday afternoon.

Our featured act this week, however, is Cults. With little more than a bandcamp page to their name, the extremely ungoogleable New York two-piece took the tubes by storm earlier this year when taste-maker Gorilla Vs Bear highlighted their insanely catchy debut single "Go Outside." Be warned -- after one listen, the 60s pop inspired sing-a-long (and just about every oither track from their admittedly limited discography) will be stuck in your head the rest of the week. Backed by a live band, the rising duo will make their SF debut this Saturday with Chicago's folk-pop hybrid Maps and Atlases at Bottom of the Hill. We wouldn't be surprised to see this one sell out, so be sure to snag tickets while you still can.

Our featured act this week, however, is Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, who play Bimbo's 365 Club Saturday. Long a favorite of indie gods Animal Collective and the go-to influence for an endless stream of lo-fi bedroom producers with pop appeal, Los Angeles' based multi-instrumentalist Ariel Pink garnered quite a bit of well-deserved attention last month with the release of Before Today. His first proper studio release, the album builds upon Pink's typical schizophrenic take on 70s and 80s AM radio-pop -- think of a steady barrage of memorable hooks and breaks you will swear were culled from forgotten Todd Rundgren, Fleetwood Mac, Hall & Oates and Steely Dan sessions. With Puro Instinct (formerly Pearl Harbor) and Magic Kids rounding out the bill, this one should be well worth that rare Saturday night trek to North Beach.

Plenty of pre-holiday live music options this week with Austin-based garage rock outfit Harlem at the Independent Tuesday, Oakland's trippy one-man act Psychic Handbook at Submission Wednesday and Stones Throw affiliated funk ambassador Dam-Funk at Mezzanine Thursday.

Our featured act this week, however, is Crocodiles. Born from the ashes of San Diego's noisey gem The Plot to Blow up the Eiffel Tower, the Southern California duo thoroughly impressed us (while not everyone) with their 2009 debut Summer of Hate -- seamlessly weaving together the best elements of shoegaze, throwback electro-pop and Detroit-style garage rock with blogger approved lo-fi production techniques, the packed thirty-four minute album has proven to be one of our most overplayed records in recent memory. And if their recently released single is any indication, fans have plenty more fuzzy pop goodness to look forward to on the band's long awaited James Ford produced sophomore effort Sleep Forever, due out later this summer. With the buzzed garage-pop quartet Dum Dum Girls and local psych-inspired act White Cloud rounding out the bill this one is sure to make for a solid night -- be sure to grab tickets while you still can.

As always, there are several more solid shows to choose from this week including Mission-based punks La Plebe at Bottom of the Hill Tuesday, Sacramento legends Cake at Independent Thursday and rising local favorites Wax Idols at the Strange Dogs party Friday -- be sure to consult the full showlist.

Our featured act this week is The Bronx, who play The Independent Wednesday. Since 2002, the Los Angeles' based outfit has been churning out hardcore and punk inspired tunes rooted in a similar rock purist tradition as their label owner John Reis' various incarnations (see: Hot Snakes, Rocket From the Crypt, The Night Marchers, Drive Like Jehu). It came as a bit of a surprise then when the band followed through last year on the long promised Mariachi El Bronx, a well-received straightforward and generally ironic-free mariachi record. Wednesday's show will feature full sets from both The Bronx and their mariachi alter-egos, complete with a full horn section and intended to be tasteful charro suits -- be sure to get there early to catch both acts.

As usual, you have a handful of other great options throughout the week, including Cleveland duo Mr. Gnome at Elbo Room tonight, the previously profiled Abe Vigoda with Vampire Weekend at The Fox Theater (tonight and Tuesday) and local garage favorites The Fresh and Onlys at The Eagle Tavern Thursday.

The Week Ahead: Bay Area Concerts 4/5 - 4/11

Yet another packed week of live music with lo-fi punk outfit Dadfag at El Rio tonight, noisy local psychedelic trio <a href="http://www.myspace.com/lateyoun...

Arts & Entertainment

bands

concert preview

epicsauce

musicians

week_ahead

Kevin Meenan

Yet another packed week of live music with lo-fi punk outfit Dadfag at El Rio tonight, noisy local psychedelic trio Late Young at The Knockout Thursday and the previously profiled Thee Oh Sees at Oakland's Uptown Saturday.

Our pick for this week, however, is San Francisco's own Weekend, who play Hemlock Friday. Easily one of our favorite bands to emerge in the past year, the trio's infectious sound pays a certain homage to Psychocandy era Jesus Mary & Chain, with a similar pop sensibility and love for tinnitus-inducing feedback as the shoegaze pioneers. Despite having only a handful of released tracks and live appearances under their belt, the group has managed to make quite a name for themselves over the past year, landing opening spots for uber-hyped acts Japandroids and Little Girls, releasing a limited run 10" on the in-demand label Mexican Summer and most recently playing tastemaker Gorilla Vs Bear's insanely stacked SXSW showcase -- all signs point to 2010 being the breakout year for the band. As we have noted in the past, these Hemlock shows are known to fill up fast, so be sure to arrive early.

Plenty of other great options this week including Oakland's synthpop solo act Former Ghosts at 21 Grand tonight, previously profiled perennial favorite Ty Segall at Hemlock Thursday and Montreal's We Are Wolves at Bottom of the Hill Saturday -- as always, be sure to consult the full list.

The Week Ahead: Bay Area Concerts 3/29 - 4/4

Another stacked week of shows with Pitchfork darlings The Morning Benders at The Indep...

Arts & Entertainment

bands

concert preview

epicsauce

musicians

week_ahead

Kevin Meenan

Our featured band this this week, however, is Florida based indie power pop act Surfer Blood. While partially indebted to the jangly breed of 60s surf rock bands that their beach-friendly moniker would imply, the go to comparison for Surfer Blood's sound is undoubtedly Blue Album era Weezer, complete with the crunchy guitar, infectious hooks and endless sing-along moments that made the landmark album such a classic. If you have yet to hear the deservedly buzzed young quartet, we strongly suggest immediately snagging their lead off single "Swim" -- we have more or less been bumping this one on repeat since we caught the band's excellent San Francisco debut at Rickshaw Stop last November. While their Friday night blowout with Turbo Fruits and Ganglians at Bottom of the Hill has long been sold out, Surfer Blood will be performing a free show at Amoeba Thursday -- the show starts at 6pm sharp, so be sure to hustle up to Haight Street early.

SFist Photos: SXSW 2010

We are back and 40% recovered from the land of Lonestars, queso dip, free schwag and live music.
We are back and 40% recovered from the land of Lonestars, queso dip, free schwag and live music. The 2010 SXSW absolutely blew us away, with bands continuously playing at every bar, storefront and parking lot from noon to sunrise each day -- if you have not made the annual trek down to Austin, we strongly encourage you to take part in the debauchery next year.

Our featured artist this week is Los Angeles based husband and wife duo Rainbow Arabia, who play Cafe Du Nord Wednesday. The experimental yet approachable act blends tribal inspired rhythms, Middle Eastern instrumentation and electro-friendly beats to create some of the most unique dance music to emerge in recent memory. Their high energy performance at last month's Noise Pop Festival proved to be one of the week's true highlights, and we are still recovering from the late night dance party they put on at SXSW Friday night. With rising bedroom producer Shlohmo rounding out the bill this one should prove to be a great night.

A bit of a slow week in live music, with a significant chunk of local bands and would-be touring acts making the annual trek down to Austin for SXSW. There are still a handful of great show options, however, with politically charged poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron at Yoshi's Tuesday and Wednesday, droney locals Common Eider King Eider at Amnesia Thursday and experimental act Xiu Xiu at Bottom of the Hill Saturday.

Our featured band this week is Seattle's Past Lives, who play a pre-SXSW show at the Elbo Room tonight. While prominently featuring four members of the sadly defunct spastic hardcore-leaning outfit The Blood Brothers, Past Lives take on post-punk has more in common with Gang of Four and Fugazi than it does with the admittedly noisy band from which the project first spawned. Yet while the sound here is a bit tamed, the raw power and abundant talent that made The Blood Brothers so memorable has hardly disappeared -- the quartet absolutely blew us away with their high energy Hemlock performance last March, and their debut LP Tapestry of Webs is one of our favorite albums to come out this year. It is an absolutely stacked bill with previously profiled Clipd Beaks, local krautrock revivalist Bronze and Portland's Get Hustle rounding out the night -- this one is not to be missed.

Three of Kevin's favorite local bands are playing tonight's show, and here's what he has to say about them:

French Miami: "Easily one of our favorite Bands in SF and beyond, French Miami cranks out dance-friendly post-punk anthems that you just can't help but chant along with."

White Cloud: "While at home with the fuzzed-out reverb lovers we consistently hype at epicsauce.com, it is no surprise that the Oakland based quartet cite both Spaceman 3 and Neu! as influences -- there is a clear love for all things psychedelic here, and a vibe similar to that of the earliest Krautrock pioneers."

Silian Rail: "Watching Robin shred on the guitar and Eric absolutely handle the drums is a truly awe-inspiring experience that will leave you wanting more."

There will also be $1 PBRs. So don't be tardy to the party, y'all!

8:30 p.m. // Milk Bar (1850 Haight St) // free, RSVP
