A Castro Street restaurant sustained considerable damage, and a neighboring parklet was destroyed when a driver crashed into them early Sunday morning then fled the scene.

The crash occurred around 1:45 am Sunday when the driver veered off Castro Street and demolished a parklet owned by Castro Indian Restaurant and Bar, then smashed into the front wall of the next-door business, Café Mystique, on Castro near 18th streets, as Hoodline and ABC 7 report.

The driver was captured on surveillance video allegedly speeding down the street before crashing into the cafe and parklet. The driver, who authorities say may have been intoxicated, gets out and wobbles away. He can then be seen on surveillance footage captured by a second camera running down Castro toward 18th Street.

“Everything was destroyed: my neighbor's wall, tables, chairs,” said Ajay Khadka, owner of Castro Indian Restaurant and Bar, speaking to ABC 7. Khadka estimates the damage to be about $20,000, according to KPIX.

Café Mystique sustained structural damage and was forced to close for breakfast Sunday morning.

“Castro Street is busy during that time. Bars are full,” said Café Mystique manager Narmela Khordins, speaking to ABC 7. “People are walking on the sidewalk. He could have killed anybody.”

Both businesses were reportedly back open Sunday evening, as repairs were already underway on Café Mystique's front exterior wall. Castro Indian Restaurant and Bar's parklet was also being rebuilt Sunday.

San Francisco Police officers are searching for the suspect, and his car was impounded as part of the investigation.

“This is a busy time, usually, [when] nightlife is closing down,” Lt. Mariano Elias, Jr. of the San Francisco Fire Department, told KPIX. “That's when this happened, and the car, from the looks of it, came at a high rate of speed based on the surveillance footage.”

A 47-year-old DUI suspect in a three-piece suit crashed his Jeep into the cable car turnaround at Powell and Market streets Wednesday evening, requiring overnight repairs, and all cars on the line were momentarily turned around at Washington Street.

SFTMA first posted an alert about the incident at 8:11 pm Wednesday, announcing that inbound cars would be momentarily switched back at Washington and Powell due to a “non-Muni collision” at the Powell Street turnaround. Police responded to the crash around 8:29 pm, as SFGate reports.

An SFPD spokesperson told the outlet that a 47-year-old male driver entered the restricted area of the cable car turnaround and caused damage to the turnaround signal and a protective concrete barrier, but no injuries were reported.

The suspect reportedly fled on foot and was detained by SFPD officers near Cyril Magnin and Ellis streets. He was booked into San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence, hit and run, and unlawfully disobeying a traffic sign.

Reddit user MarineJAB told SFGate they came upon the scene when the Jeep was being towed, noting its bumper was missing. They said an SFMTA worker described the driver as “wearing a three-piece suit,” and said he “somehow ended up reversing but got stuck.”

The cable car turnaround was closed until Thursday afternoon, with cars switching back at Washington Street, per SFGate. Substitute buses were deployed to transport riders between Market and Washington streets.

One teen was killed and four others are in serious and critical condition following a suspected DUI single-car crash in Novato early Saturday, and it’s believed they’re not from Novato.

The crash occurred just before 1 am Saturday at the intersection of San Marin Drive and Simmons Lane in Novato, according to the Novato Police Department in a social media post.

The 17-year-old driver of the sedan, which was occupied by four other teens between 16 and 18 years old, hit a utility pole, as KRON4 reports. Police determined the driver was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

All five teens were transported to the hospital, where one was declared dead, and the others were reportedly in serous and critical condition.

The police department said based on preliminary information, it’s not believed they’re from Novato.

“We understand that this is an incredibly difficult situation for all the families involved as they navigate the weight of this tragedy,” wrote the police department.

Authorities arrested a Vallejo man on suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug Saturday in a "mass-casualty" crash near Napa’s Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, which killed three people and sent four to the hospital with major injuries.

The accident happened Saturday around noon on Silverado Trail near Oak Knoll Avenue, about six miles north of Napa. CHP said the driver of a southbound Mitsubishi crashed head-on into a northbound Toyota sedan after side-swiping another vehicle, as NBC Bay Area reports.

Authorities are calling the crash a "mass casualty event," as victims had to be rushed to different hospitals for treatment.

One passenger in the Mitsubishi was pronounced dead at the scene, and another died at the hospital. Four people in the Toyota were hospitalized with major injuries, where one of them later died, authorities said.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, who was identified as William Brumley, 68, of Vallejo was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial hospital and is expected to survive, according to the Chronicle.

The crash was reportedly located near Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, but it was unclear whether the driver had been to the winery prior to the crash.

The identities of the passengers who were killed have not been released, and the investigation is ongoing.

Silverado Trail was closed for several hours during the investigation and was reportedly reopened to traffic at 6 pm Saturday.

Urine test kits issued by a state-run forensic lab in Santa Rosa were discovered to have been faulty, leading to potential false positives for alcohol intoxication in a small percentage of Sonoma County cases over nine years, and it’s unclear whether other counties were affected.

As the Chronicle reports, prosecutors announced this week that some criminal cases in Sonoma County may have relied on defective urine tests used to measure alcohol intoxication between 2016 and 2025. It's unclear whether the faulty kits were used in other California counties.

Assistant District Attorney Brian Staebell told the Chronicle that a state-run lab in Santa Rosa, the Bureau of Forensic Services, provided a list of 14 tests that were conducted using defective kits from supplier Andwin Scientific, though five were tied to investigations that did not result in charges. Most of the nine convictions using the faulty tests were primarily DUI cases. Per the Chronicle, prosecutors said they notified defense attorneys this week after identifying the affected convictions.

The faulty test kits reportedly contained an incorrect concentration of sodium fluoride, about 100 milligrams instead of the stated 750 milligrams, as the Chronicle reports. This could allow yeast and sugar to ferment, potentially producing inaccurate alcohol readings and “may result in an artificially elevated alcohol level in the sample,” said lab director Katina Repp in a January 28 letter.

Repp said inaccurate alcohol readings would likely occur only in samples with enough sugar and yeast to trigger fermentation, which can happen in people with certain health conditions or infections, as the Chronicle reports. She said the lab stopped shipping the affected kits and notified the supplier after discovering the issue in August 2025, noting that kits distributed since September should contain the correct concentration.

“It is impossible to assess whether samples taken during investigations of criminal matters, including but not limited to DUI investigations or sexual assault investigations, were properly preserved,” Repp wrote, per the Chronicle.  

Sonoma County Public Defender Brian Morris said his office will evaluate each of its cases involving potentially faulty test kits.

“When the government’s own lab acknowledges that faulty testing kits may have artificially inflated alcohol levels over a nine-year period, it raises serious concerns about the reliability of their forensic testing, internal controls, and safeguards,” Morris said in an email to the Chronicle. “It also puts the integrity of convictions based on DOJ evidence in serious doubt.”

In a separate case, the Guardian reported last year that thousands of drug tests used in California prisons in 2024 may have produced false opiate positives after Quest Diagnostics changed a testing reagent, with monthly positive rates jumping from about 6% to 7% to as high as 20%, according to prison medical records.

An alleged DUI driver stands accused of a drunken 88 MPH crash in Hayward that killed his 20-year-old passenger, seriously injured his own son, and left another passenger comatose. Though oddly, he was released from jail.  

Last March 7 at around 10 pm in Hayward, there was three-car rollover crash caused by a suspected DUI driver, who police say was driving 88 miles per hour on Hayward Boulevard, and with a blood alcohol content of .23, about triple the legal limit. The crash killed that driver’s 20-year-old passenger Elizabeth Fuentes, injured the driver’s four-year-old son to the extent that the kid needed 12 staples in his head, and injured his third passenger to the point that she was comatose and suffered from paralysis.

Now, a full nine months later, the Alameda County DA has finally gotten around to charging that driver, 20-year-old Armando Hernandez-Benitez, with vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and numerous counts of DUI, according to the Bay Area News Group.

So the 20-year-old Elizabeth Fuentes was killed immediately, the four-year-old son was seriously injured, and according to police reports, the unidentified 18-year-old third passenger would “become comatose” and “suffer paralysis” from her injuries. Though curiously, the accused DUI driver Hernandez-Benitez has remained a free man for most of the last nine months.

“He was arrested after the crash but then released from jail, records show,” the Bay Area News Group reports. “He is not in custody and has not yet had his first court appearance, according to public records. The charges were filed on December 10.”

The deceased victim, Elizabeth Fuentes, is seen here. “She was very loved and cherished by the whole family, and this sudden loss caught them by surprise,” says a GoFundMe set up for her family. “She was a loving sister, cousin, niece, aunt, and most importantly daughter, she grew up a Hayward native, supported by her Dad, mother, older brother and sisters, and as an older sister herself for her younger siblings who would always come to her with open arms.”

An Oakland man stopped at a Hercules fire station to ask for directions, and staff quickly surmised he was drunk, and also driving on a license suspended for a previous DUI. Oh, and they also found a baggie of meth in his sock.

We are now heading into the thick of the holiday season here, so SFist offers its obligatory reminder that you should absolutely not drink and drive. After all, that bad decision might end up leading to some escalatingly even worse bad decisions.

Consider that last Saturday, not long after 6 pm, a 63-year-old Oakland man parked his blue Audi A4 at Contra Costa County Fire Station 76 on Refugio Valley Road. He popped in just to ask for directions, though KRON4 reports that station personnel figured the man who stopped to ask for directions was driving drunk. According to a police report, this fellow “displayed the objective signs and symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol.”

Field sobriety tests and a breathalyzer confirmed this suspicion. Further review also confirmed the man’s license was suspended because of, you guessed it… a previous DUI.

The man was quickly arrested and booked in the Martinez Detention Facility. Upon being booked, officers also discovered baggies of suspected meth and fentanyl hidden in his sock.

Meanwhile, the man’s Audi A4 was towed from the fire station parking lot. And to all a good night!

After a month-long firestorm that a hit-and-run suspect accused of killing two women while driving on meth could get a diversion program instead of facing trial, an SF Superior Court judge just ruled the case will indeed go to trial.

One issue that largely fueled the 2022 recall of SF DA Chesa Boudin was the infamous case of Troy McAlister, who was accused of killing 27-year-old Hanako Abe and 60-year-old Elizabeth Platt in a New Year’s Eve 2020 hit-and-run crash. McAlister was charged with DUI for allegedly having both alcohol and meth in his system at the time of the crash, and he tried to flee the scene on foot. Oh, and McAlister was driving a vehicle he had allegedly carjacked from a woman he was on a date with just two days earlier.  

The case is still making its way through the courts. But earlier this month it created a local media firestorm — and was covered in the international news — that McAlister’s public defender had put in a request for McAlister to get a drug court diversion program instead of facing trial and a possible jail sentence. As seen above, the British tabloid Daily Mail ran the headline “Woke San Francisco judge set to grant early release to 91-time felon.”

That headline is complete bullshit. The judge in question is SF Superior Court Judge Michael Begert, but he was never “set to grant early release” to McAlister. McAlister’s public defender Scott Grant had merely asked for the diversion program instead of trial. And attorneys always ask for the best outcome for their client, it’s what attorneys do! Begert never indicated he would grant the diversion request, but there was still talk from the recall-happy crowd of trying to recall Judge Begert, over a decision he had not even made.

And Judge Begert would not make that decision. The Chronicle reports that Begert denied the request for diversion Tuesday morning. So McAlister will indeed face trial on charges of DUI, vehicular manslaughter, driving a stolen car, possessing a concealed gun, and leaving the scene of a crash.

“Your actions, in combination with some incredibly bad luck, have resulted in two people losing their lives,” Begert said to McAlister during his Tuesday morning hearing. “I don’t know if you are ever going to be able to get over the fact that you are responsible for that. I think the way forward, as I see it, is for you to face your community through the criminal justice system and take accountability.”

The brass tacks of the legal argument that McAlister’s public defender requested was that Judge Begert “sever” the DUI charges, as DUI charges are not eligible for diversion. Begert declined to sever the DUI charges.

So McAlister’s case will go to trial, either late this year, or early next year. Judge Begert is set to schedule that jury trial at a hearing at some point in November.

The suspect in last month's deadly minivan crash in Napa County has a record of drug arrests and has been deported from the US multiple times, ICE says, making this case more likely to become a politically charged one.

The crash happened the night of Sunday, September 7. A Toyota Sienna minivan was traveling southbound on Pope Valley Road in unincorporated Napa County, 12 miles north of St. Helena, when it crashed into a tree on the side of the road. The minivan had eight men in it, including the driver, 53-year-old Norberto Celerino of Stockton. Six of the passengers were killed and one was critically injured.

Celerino, who did not have a valid driver's license, survived, and we learned a few days later that he had three previous DUI convictions. He was also, allegedly, carrying three different driver's licenses, and authorities say that he also went by several names, including Beto Celerino Villalva, Grabien Martinez, and Roberto Savaringo-Diabla.

Celerino has now been charged with six counts of murder and six counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, as well as driving under the influence.

As KTVU reports, ICE has identified him as 49-year-old Beto Cerillo-Bialva, and in a statement the agency calls him "a criminal alien from Mexico who first entered the United States in 1995."  They add that since he first came to the country, "he has been arrested several times for possession of cocaine, multiple DUIs, and removed multiple times from the United States."

The agency says further that "due to Cerillo['s] continued disregard for the laws within the United States and California’s sanctuary laws has led to this tragic incident."

The story has been picked up by Fox News, naturally, which refers to Cerillo-Bialva as "previously deported blue state driver."

The governor's office has shot back, turning the blame back in the direction of the Trump administration.

"It's clear that this is an attempt to distract from the truth," says Diana Crofts-Pelayo, deputy director of communications for Governor Newsom, in a statement. "This individual re-entered the country several times under the federal government's watch. Trump and Miller have little interest in public safety or protecting farmworkers."

Once this case goes to trial, it seems likely to incite more political grandstanding, much as in the tragic 2015 San Francisco shooting of Kate Steinle, on Pier 14. In that case, an undocumented man who had previously been deported, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, was deemed responsible but was ultimately cleared of a murder charge because the shooting appeared accidental, but Donald Trump mentioned the shooting multple times on the campaign trail as he railed against sanctuary cities.

Cerillo-Bialva reportedly had DUI convictions in San Joaquin County in 2020 and 2024, as well as a third from more than 10 years ago.

The six men killed in the crash, who all lived in and around Stockton, have been identified as Pedro Lopez Gomez, 57, Fernando Silverio, 34, Demetrio Celerino Francisco, 39, Beymar Reynosa Rodriguez, 32, Aaron Ruiz, 39, and Loreto Ricardo Hernandez, 42.

The case that largely drove the recall of DA Chesa Boudin is still in the courts nearly five years later, and the attorney for the man accused of killing two women while driving intoxicated on New Year’s Eve 2020 is asking for diversion instead of a jail sentence.

One of the big driving factors behind the 2022 recall of SF DA Chesa Boudin recall was the case of Troy McAlister, whose New Year’s Eve 2020 hit-and-run crash took the lives of 27-year-old Hanako Abe and 60-year-old Elizabeth Platt. The driver Troy McAlister was charged with DUI for allegedly having both alcohol and meth in his system at the time of the crash, and he tried to flee the scene on foot.

But what turned the case into a media firestorm was the fact that Boudin’s office had struck a plea deal with McAlister to let him out of jail eight months earlier while McAlister was serving time on an armed robbery charge. McAlister had also been arrested two months prior with burglary tools on him. Oh, and the car he was driving in the hit-and-run accident had been carjacked from a woman McAlister was on a date with just two days earlier.  

McAlister was charged with DUI, vehicular manslaughter, driving a stolen car, possessing a concealed gun, and leaving the scene of a crash. The case is still making its way through the courts. But the Chronicle reports that McAlister's public defender is asking the court for a drug rehabilitation diversion program rather than jail, a diversion program that would put him in San Francisco Drug Court that focuses on treatment and counseling instead of incarceration.

McAlister’s attorney, deputy public defender Scott Grant, told the Chronicle that a diversion program would be a “proper and reasonable” sentence, and added, “Research tells us again and again that intensive, targeted treatment for people’s underlying problems — not incarceration — fosters long-term safety.”

DA Brooke Jenkins’s office did not respond to the Chronicle’s request for comment on the matter. There’s also an additional angle that Jenkins has been accused of illegally sharing McAlister’s rap sheet with a colleague as the Recall Boudin campaign was ramping up.  

The Chron notes that some tough-on-crime activists are planning a protest before Friday’s scheduled hearing on the matter at San Francisco Superior Court, though it’s highly unlikely that a decision will be made Friday. Interestingly, the judge on the case is Michael Begert, who was the target of a “report card” campaign seeking to oust him from the bench in last year’s elections, though Begert was reelected handily.

The diversion request may be depicted in some corners of the media as an example of the criminal justice system run amok, but this is not really unexpected or out-of-the-ordinary, and is a standard procedure for defense attorneys.

But if McAlister does eventually get a diversion sentence instead of a jail sentence, then yes, we would likely see another media firestorm unleashed over this case.

The 53-year-old Stockton man who was driving a minivan and was allegedly intoxicated when he crashed into a tree and killed six of his passengers apparently had three prior DUI convictions, and also did not have a valid driver’s license.

We’re learning more about Sunday’s alleged DUI crash in Napa that killed six people when the driver ran off the road and crashed into a tree on Pope Valley Road. Specifically, KTVU is now reporting that the 53-year-old driver, Norberto Celerino of Stockton, had three previous DUI convictions, and also did not have a valid driver’s license, and for whatever reason, also had three different aliases.  

Celerino had a previous DUI conviction in San Joaquin County in 2020, and then a second in the same county as recently as 2024. The third DUI conviction does not have date or location information attached to it, because the conviction is more than ten years old.  

Authorities in Napa County announced Monday that they had arrested Celerino on suspicion of murder, which suggested that this would be a case of what's known as "Watson murder" in California — a second-degree murder charge for a DUI death when a suspect has prior DUI convictions.

There were eight men in the minivan, including Celerino, and KTVU confirms they were all farm workers. Two have been identified as 42-year-old Loreto Ricardo Hernandez and 34-year-old Fernando Silverio.

The other six victims have not yet been identified, as police are still notifying next of kin. KTVU reports that the Napa County Sheriff's Office says that all eight men in the vehicle were likely from the Stockton area. The one other survivor of the crash remains hospitalized.

On Tuesday, Celerino was formally charged with six counts of murder, six counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and DUI.

Six passengers were killed and another suffered major injuries Sunday evening when the driver of their vehicle ran off the road and hit a tree about 12 miles north of St. Helena. The driver, who survived, was arrested for suspected DUI.

As KPIX reports, Napa County Sheriff's deputies were the first to arrive at the scene. Six passengers were pronounced dead, and a seventh passenger was airlifted to a hospital, as KRON4 reports. According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 5:50 pm when the vehicle — a Toyota Sienna minivan — was traveling southbound on Pope Valley Road in an unincorporated portion of Napa County, per KRON4.

The driver was arrested at the hospital for suspected DUI causing injury or death, per KPIX. Pope Valley Road was closed most of the evening while authorities investigated the scene.

Napa Valley Register called the crash one of Napa County’s deadliest “in decades, if not longer.”

Update: The arrested driver has been identified as 53-year-old Norberto Celerino of Stockton. The victims have not yet been publicly identified, and nor have their relationships to Celerino.

Retired 76-year-old schoolteacher Darlene Scalf was visiting Oakland from Louisiana when she was killed by a hit-and-run driver the morning of July 13, and the driver was allegedly intoxicated and is now facing murder charges.

In mid-July, retired 76-year-old Louisiana schoolteacher Darlene Scalf was visiting Oakland to see family, though her trip was tragically cut short when she was killed in a hit-and-run car crash at Fruitvale Avenue and East 27th Street in East Oakland. As seen in the video below, Scalf was hit by a white Toyota Tacoma pickup truck while making a perfectly legal pedestrian crossing at 8:40 am on a Sunday morning.

Within hours, police arrested 40-year-old Oakland resident Jeremiah Mendoza at a gas station not far away on 35th Avenue, having tracked him there using traffic surveillance cameras. And when they arrested him, police say Mendoza smelled of alcohol, was slurring his words, and had an open container of beer in his car.  

Now the Bay Area News Group reports that Mendoza is being charged with murder by the Alameda County DA’s Office. He’s also being charged with DUI causing injury, driving with a .08% BAC or higher, leaving the scene of an accident, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated with a prior conviction.

And that “prior conviction” is actually two prior convictions. Per the Bay Area News Group, Mendoza had additional misdemeanor DUI convictions in both September 2012 and April 2013. These were from more than ten years ago, but they are still prior DUI convictions.
