Over on KQED's food blog, Stephanie Lucianovic writes about her spoiled fine-dining engagements due to San Francisco's crippling taxicab companies, which fail to pickup/deliver in a timely fashion. This tardiness, you see, can cancel a reservation. Also, according to her:

It touches on an issue that will one day have Northern Californians and Southern Californians battling it out in a blood-soaked, brutal massacre to the end: using the article "the" before freeway numbers.

We are adoring the cautious yet game-for-adventure tone in this Southern Exposure pie delivery service piece! Meredith Brody bills the Weekly for her belly dancer. Hey, SFist Ced liked it! Let's Get Killed on the spate of bands coming in to perform single albums live, including Sonic Youth with Daydream Nation. We find that phenomenon so mysterious. The Bouncer passes along the theory that there are three types of bars in this city: Irish, hipster, and bars with two Asian women behind the bar. Also -- you may have heard the new Weekly web guy is now no longer with the Weekly -- best of luck to you, Matt Stroud! He was super super nice about the Day Around The Baymixup and we were looking forward to getting to know him!

--Gavin Newsom angrily denies Chris Daly's cocaine allegations, calls them "sleazy," and calls for everyone in the Board of Supes to condemn them. Tom Ammiano says he thought it was one of Daly's better speeches. It wasn't just that shooting in Western Addition this morning -- it's been kind of a violent 24 hours there and in the Mission.

It's the Ed Jew San Francisco calendar for 2007! We want the Burlingame one too. Thanks to reader Jake for sending it along -- we may use the back cover for the Day Around The Bay post we're going to write up next.

We mentioned this in Tuesday's Day Around the Bay, but there are some new bits to the story so we're going to do a full post on it. Plus, it's kind of a fun story. Anyways, this is about the guy in Alameda who did some public art in front of his house that features a cardboard cutout of the President with a knife in his head. Well, the Secret Service were not amused and came to give the guy a visit.

In today's Day Around the Bay, we linked to a story about gun shots being heard in a Safeway in Pinole. At the time, we didn't think that much of it. It turns out there was a whole lot more to it. To whit, a robbery attempt, SWAT teams, an almost hostage situation, getaway cars and all that fun stuff.

We found this story on the KGO site whle cruising around looking for Day Around the Bay stories and we thought we'd write about it. But then we watched the video of it and decided not to, mainly because it's basically perfect as is. There's nothing we could add to it that would make it more awesome than the story already is. Basically, what the story is about is this guy who is hanging a figure that looks like an arab (he says it's not an arab but a "terrorist" for which we are all missing the subtelty in his caricture). He was hanging the figure from a tree but after a complaint was made, the cops told him to take it down. So he moved it into his front lawn where it will stay until we "finish the job in Iraq".

Careful readers of our daily news summary Day Around The Bay may have noticed that the Golden Gate Restaurant Association has filed a lawsuit against Gavin Newsom and Tom Ammiano's proposed citywide health insurance plan. How can people who support the health care plan show their outrage?

We were originally going to put a cursory summary of Partners in Preservation's program in Day Around The Bay, but after poking around on the website, it's so cool that we've elevated it to a stand-alone post. American Express, in connection with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the World Monuments Fund, will give $1 million to historic sites around the Bay Area. The way they'll determine who to give the money to and how to divide it up is by online voting.

We try to keep our new feature Day Around The Bay pretty short -- so these three longer items we found in our relentless scouring of local news sources have been relegated to their own separate post.
