Singleton has since been released and all charges dropped.

Atlanta-based media network, Punk Black, shared video footage on Instagram yesterday of Michael Singleton, an executive chef based in the Bay Area and Dallas, being tased by police at the Dallas Love Field Airport — while he was standing still with his hands behind his back. At least two witnesses filmed the incident as Singleton repeatedly shouted his name and told onlookers to record what was happening.

Musician Lizzy Ashliegh filmed the below clip and told Punk Black the following:

this man said he was being framed and to film. I later overheard that a lady was misheard by the officers and they went straight into action when they assumed “white powder was involved” I hope what she really said goes back to the cops that took him away.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned="" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DImRMvlPv2i/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF; With police departments in San Francisco and around the country still working out how to best respond to the July 7 mass shooting in Dallas, some officers have taken to proactively arresting people who have spoken ill of police on social media. The Intercept reports that these arrests are usually for speech the police consider to be threatening, and may challenge basic First Amendment rights.

“Arresting people for speech is something we should be very careful about,” security technologist at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University Bruce Schneier told the publication.

The arrests are taking place all over the country, and follow a similar pattern. Four unnamed men were arrested in Detroit after at least one of them called the Dallas shooter a hero, Detroit News reports. The paper further details the posts of the men who, despite being arrested, were not initially charged with a crime.

One reportedly wrote on Facebook, "This needs to happen more often," and accompanied his comment with video of police officers being shot. Another allegedly posted to Facebook that "[The Dallas shooter] inspired me to do the exact same thing.”

“I know this is a new issue, but I want these people charged with crimes,” Detroit Police Chief James Craig told the paper on Sunday. “I’ve directed my officers to prepare warrants for these four individuals, and we’ll see which venue is the best to pursue charges.”

The Intercept notes that this response from police is not limited to Detroit, and highlights similar cases in Connecticut, Illinois, and New Jersey.

“Certainly, posting that kind of thing on social media is a bad thought,” professor Larry Dubin of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law told the Detroit News. “But having a bad thought isn’t necessarily a crime. There are a lot of issues at play here, and I think a lot would depend on what exactly was said.”

Putting aside the First Amendment question, a reporter at The Globe and Mail was quick to point out what appears to be a glaring discrepancy in the justification for the recent arrests.

Craig, meanwhile, gives us Californians a little heads up that we may soon see similar arrests on the West Coast. "Especially now, in this current climate,” he told the Detroit News. “I don’t think that’s protected speech. In California, if you threaten to kill someone, the state statute says that’s a terrorist threat.”

“When I was in L.A., I personally arrested people for that," he added. "But with social media threats, it’s a new issue that needs to be clarified. So let’s clarify it now.”

Following a sniper attack in Dallas Thursday night that left five police officers dead, police in the Bay Area are reportedly taking precautions to prevent any copycat shootings.

The Dallas shootings, which began at 9 p.m. during a peaceful downtown demonstration against fatal police shootings of civilians, left seven more people injured. Early reports indicate that before he was killed, one of the suspects in the shootings claimed he was upset at the recent police shootings, with Dallas Police Chief David Brown saying Friday morning that "he wanted to kill white people — especially white officers."

Three other suspects remain in custody, but Gothamist reports that they are "not cooperating with authorities."

Friday morning, Mayor Ed Lee issued this statement on what spokesperson Deirdre Hussey described as "the recent violence across the country."

This morning our hearts are heavy following the recent violence that has impacted communities across the country.

We can and must stand against violence — violence against young men of color, violence against law enforcement officers and violence against our communities as a whole. We need to come together, have meaningful conversations about change and work together towards peace.

In these sad times, when it seems nearly everyday we are greeted by more killing and more reason to grieve, we must remember what is right and what gives us hope. It is the bold, but peaceful protestors in the Black Lives Matter movement across the country who seek a safer, more perfect union through speech, the many brave police officers — such as those in Orlando — who unselfishly rush to save lives, and our San Francisco police officers who showed this week that reforms can take hold and the sanctity of life can be upheld. ”

With his last line, Lee was presumably alluding to the Wednesday's police activity on Mid-Market, in which an allegedly armed man was detained via non-lethal means after a four-hour standoff with SFPD.

Local police departments are also taking precautions, today and in the coming days. According to KRON 4, "Police in San Jose and in Oakland will be patrolling in pairs" following the Dallas shootings. A call to San Francisco police (which as standard practice patrol in pairs) to see what additional precautions, if any, officers would be taking in the wake of the attacks was not returned at publication time, but the agency did send the following statement to media Friday morning:

Our thoughts and prayers today are with the Dallas law enforcement community, the families of those officers who lost their lives last night and the people of Dallas. It is disturbing that a peaceful, lawful demonstration by Dallas citizens was exploited for a vicious attack. Even while under fire, these brave officers strove to protect protesters from gunfire. In the wake of this senseless tragedy, San Francisco Police Department remains committed to building stronger bonds between law enforcement officers and the communities we are proud to serve.

* Washington vs Seattle
Saturday, January 5, 2008. 1:30 PM, PST.
Wild Card 2008
Battle Of The Wounded

Washington is still riding the emotional wave of FS Sean Taylor's untimely death, and gashed their way into the playoffs by beating (an admittedly resting-for-the-postseason) archrival Dallas by 21 points. 21 was Sean's jersey number. Now this ragtag just-good-enough emotionally-charged franchise heads northwest to Seattle.

Photo via the Seattle Post-Intelligencer

The cold-fish Seahawks have the unenviable task of trying to defeat a team that has become a memorial wake on-the-field. The Hawks are unwillingly become the opposing force in Washington's storyline. No fun.

And no run game. Seattle still misses former LG Steve Hutchison (long gone; poached by the Vikings), and their run game has sucked so hard that it's been given up. The Seahawks have become one-dimensional, dragging their dead run game behind them like a wolf that'd chewed off its leg to get out of a trap. The crazy part? It's worked. Shaven-headed QB Matt Hasslebeck has had a fantastic season executing Head Coach Holmgren's pure form of the West Coast Offense, and it may provide enough firepower to get Seattle through.

Both teams are hurt, but in different ways. Who will survive?
And then the rain / and then the rain / and then the rain / beats down on me

RIP: Dick Nolan

Dick Nolan, former coach of the 49ers, died yesterday at the age of 75.
There is no doubt that coach Don Nelson and his sidekick Chris Mullen have reshaped the Warriors, and the team now has a pretty strong pool of players from which Nellie can choose to implement his failed system of up-tempo small-ball.

Nellie's vision of a perfect rebounding lineup. D'uh-oh. Photo from healingdaily.com.

Ho-ho-hold on a minute SFist, you say. What do you mean failed system? The Warriors surprised everybody last year by making a late season run, making the playoffs for the first time in 13 years, and shocking the presumptive favorite to win it all and number one seed Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the playoffs. "How the hell is that a failed system," you ask.

All good points SFist readers, but remind us again, who won the NBA Finals? Who played in the NBA Finals? Who played in the Western Conference Finals? Who got waxed by a larger, more fundamentally sound Utah Jazz in the second round (and again last night)?
After starting fast and then fading, the Warriors pulled off a master stroke of highway robbery on January 17 when they unloaded franchise goats Mike Dunleavy, Troy Murphy, and Ike Diogu to some rubes in overalls and straw hats in Indianapolis for starters Stephen Jackson and Al Harrington. After some gettin'-to-know-you time, the club finished the season ablaze, going 16-4 down the stretch to pluck the eighth and final playoff spot from the Los Angeles Clippers.

And then there was the opening round series with Dallas. Ahhggghhh, sweet playoff upset. The Warriors absolutely owned the Mavs, and oh it felt so good. 2006-2007 season: Mission accomplished.

The magazine made this determination using the following criteria: coolness, cost of living alone, culture, job growth, online dating (?), nightlife, number of singles. While we're not upset at this victory, we'd quibble with the notion that online dating, specifically "the number of active profiles in each city listed on dating site Yahoo! Personals", should factor in.

In the past, Forbes defined a city by its "Metropolitan Statistical Area"; now the magazine is defining a city by its narrower "Urbanized Area." Online dating helps to transcend geography -- the study using online dating as a factor flies in the face of this more-focused methodology.

Even with this contention, we'll say, as we often do: everybody loves a list. And everybody loves being pronounced "best." But will everybody love that they decided Mayor Newsom is "Most Eligible Bachelor?" Doubt it. How about "Most Eligible Bachelorette" Marissa Mayer -- a Veep at Goooooogle?

Here's Forbes' Top 10: 1. San Francisco-Oakland, Calif.; 2. New York City, N.Y.; 3. Los Angeles, Calif.; 4. Atlanta, Ga.; 5. Chicago, Ill.; 6. Washington, D.C.; 7. San Diego, Calif.; 8. Seattle, Wash.; 9. Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; 10. Philadelphia, Pa.

It's a good time to check out the state of the airline industry.

The Napa Valley-based Coalition for Airline Passengers' Bill of Rights recently issued a statement where it lauded certain members of congress for showing "tremendous leadership and a great sense of commitment to passengers' rights."

But, see, the group wants that bill of rights for passengers to become a reality. It acknowledged that "congressional rhetoric" is not enough. (Which, you know, can be applied to so much more than transportation issues.)

We first learned of the organization last January; as Jon reported then, Kate Hanni was one of the passengers caught on the infamous plane that spent 9.5 hours on an Austin tarmac. It was a flight that was supposed to go from SFO to Dallas. If you don't recall the story, her money quote was, "there were people getting ill, the toilets did begin to overflow." Hanni's the group's founder and spokesperson.

While some airlines seem to be putting a higher priority on passengers, other still let such things keep happening

We like the idea of the bill of rights a lot. It's good that the core issue has so much resonance, because as far as acronyms go, "CAPBOR" is a pretty forgettable one.
Our last gig in Paris at La Maroquinerie in April 2007. The place was packed with 400 fans who knew all the words and clapped and danced and yelled out to us and made us feel incredibly good. We played really well with in our fancy embroidered suits and we came off stage sweaty as barnyard pigs.

Best venue in the world?
I hate to be such a Francophile, but la Cigale in Paris. It's a huge, old, red-velvet theater and truly a lovely place to share and experience live music.

Best fans in the world?
The best fan we've met so far is a young girl from Houston named Gelli. We just met her last week. She wore our band t-shirt at the show, danced in the front row the whole time, beamed bright smiles at us, and gave us hope for the future of the human race.

What's your favorite song to perform?
Right now it's 'Saltbreakers'. I love it when the guys come in -- who doesn't love a rousing chorus of bearded men? Also, I crank the reverb on the amp and dance around with my guitar.

Favorite collaborators?
My bandmates -- Tucker Martine, Karl Blau and Steve Moore. also the wonderful world-class violist Eyvind Kang. and the Cedar Hill Baptist choir from Nashville that sang on 'To the Country' from the new record.

Lamest Crowd Request ever
When we played to two people in Dallas a few years back and both were from our record label. It's not that the label people were lame -- they were really nice -- but that was certainly the lamest attendance ever.

Power and Associates, the well-regarded surveyor of customer satisfaction rankings and similar, has conducted its 2007 North American Airport Satisfaction Index Study.

Guess which U.S. airport ranked the lowest in the large airport (those with 30 million passengers+/annum) category? Yeah, it's San Francisco International.

SFO was rated tied for the lowest in 7 of the 9 possible categories, with only the food/beverage and retail categories earning a lofty "about average" ranking. In other words, in airport accessibility, check-in/baggage check, security check, terminal facilities, baggage claim, immigration/customs control, and overall airport satisfaction, our local big hub is below average. Dallas/Fort Worth International was the big winner.

Oakland (OAK) and San Jose (SJC/Norm Mineta) fared a little better in their category of medium airport rankings (those with (10 million-less than 30 million passengers/annum) at 18th and 23rd respectively. Score-wise, OAK is the area winner at 679 out of 1,000, while SFO earned 665 points and SJC got 660.

So, if you can stand (or bypass) the poor public transportation to get there, it looks like Oakland's the way to go around here.

Last night in Salt Lake City, in game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series, it was the Utah Jazz who had the energy and it was the Warriors who were a step behind. The Jazz looked confident; the Warriors looked hesitant. The Jazz ran the Warriors off the court. Matt Harpring done brought it. And the Jazz backcourt held its own behind the spirited play of Deron Williams. Did we leave anything out? Oh yeah, the Jazz didn't lose by 20, they, uh, won, 116-112.

Game 1 was a back-and-forth nailbiter (16 lead changes and 21 ties) that went right down to the quick. And like a bamboo shoot to the quick, it hurts. The Ws fought hard all night and had a chance to take the lead on a three-pointer by Stephen Jackson with eight seconds to play, but the shot clanked and so did the Warriors fortunes in game 1.

An all too-common sight for the Warriors in game 1: Carlos Boozer all alone in the paint. Seriously, the nearest Warrior is like 10 feet away. Photo from espn.com.

Conventional wisdom says the Jazz want to run a half-court game and want the score in the 80s; the Warriors want to run a wide-open fire drill and put the score over 100. So with a score like 116-112, you'd think it would be all Warriors.

But like us, you'd be wrong. The Jazz outscored Warriors in fast break points, 25-19, by taking advantage of rebounds and turnovers to turn the Warriors running game against them. The Jazz outrebounded the Warriors, 54-36, including a 20-14 advantage in offensive rebounds, and the Warriors gave the Jazz the ball 16 times on turnovers.

Observation number one about tonight's game: Baron Davis is not 100 percent. It was, ahem, painfully obvious that Baron's right hamstring was hampering his mobility and his quickness. And forget about any lift -- except for that two-handed jam driving down the lane with 4:37 to go in the second quarter. At times, the Beard looked like he was dragging his right leg behind him. He looked and acted vulnerable and both teams seemed to sense this. The Dubs were not as cocksure and explosive as they were with Dallas and the Jazz were emboldened to take the action right to Biddy.

The Warriors: The Dream Continues, Tonight

Improbably, almost impossibly, the Golden State Warriors' dream season continues tonight with <a href="h...

SF News

Andrei Kirilenko

Baron Davis

basketball

Carlos Boozer

court

Dallas

Dallas Mavericks

Dee Brown

Denver

Derek Fisher

Deron Williams

Don Nelson

games

Golden State

Golden State Warriors

gun

Houston

Houston Rockets

Jason Richardson

Jazz

Jerry Sloan

Matt Harpring

Mavericks

Mehmet Okur

money

Monta Ellis

NBA

News+Sports

Once

Rockets

Ronnie Brewer

San Antonio

Bay Area Sports

Spurs

Stephen Jackson

The Jazz

The Warriors

Utah

Utah Jazz

vegas

Warriors

Western Conference

chris

Improbably, almost impossibly, the Golden State Warriors' dream season continues tonight with game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal matchup with the Utah Jazz. The Warriors are into the semis by virtue of their historic six-game stunner over the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks; the Jazz eeked out a game 7 road win over the Houston Rockets.

The Jazz are the fourth seed in the Western Conference, but in our minds, its the Dubs that enter this series as the favorites. The Jazz are undoubtedly mentally and physically drained after their game 7 thriller on Saturday, while the Warriors are riding a wave of emotion that shows no sign of dissipating.

We're taking the Warriors in five. Considering that we were one of the few publications to go on record picking the Warriors to beat Dallas, in six games no less, and considering that we ran the table in first round of the Western Conference playoffs -- we even got the number of games right for every series except San Antonio-Denver (we picked Spurs in six instead of five games) -- we feel totally confident in sending you to Vegas with your life savings and the Warriors in five. In fact, it looks like many of you already have -- Point Spreads.com is reporting that 68 percent of the early spread money and 92 percent of money line bets thus far have been on Golden State.

The Beard is calling all comers, but the Utah Jazz will have no answer for him or the Warriors in their second-round Western Conference playoff series. Photo from espn.com.

This series will be a case study in opposite styles and a fascinating battle of wills between head coaches Don Nelson and Jerry Sloan. Both are stubborn, grizzled grand masters who have more than 2,000 NBA victories (and no titles) between them. Both will try to impose their style of basketball on the series or die trying. Nelson, of course, will seek to overwhelm Utah with the frenetic, madcap run-and-gun smallball; Sloan will try to slow things down to a crawl with suffocating defense, half-court sets, and ball control.

Utah presents somewhat of a puzzle for the Dubs because they are really a team without superstars. Forward Carlos Boozer (24.6 ppg; 11.0 rpg) is a grave and gathering force down low, but beyond Boozer, Utah is really a team built on the idea of being greater than the sum of its parts. That will make it hard for the Warriors to focus on any one player, but it will also make the Jazz game plan extremely limited and highly predictable. Utah has plenty of size in big men Mehmet Okur, Andrei Kirilenko, and Matt Harpring, but the Warriors will counter with speed, speed, and more speed. Matt Harpring against Jax -- who you gonna take? Exactly.

Once again, we expect the Warriors guards to completely overwhelm the Utah backcourt. If healthy, Baron Davis will continue his MVP performance and Stephen Jackson, Jason Richardson, and Monta Ellis are going to absolutely eat former Warrior Derek Fisher and fellow guardsman Deron Williams and Dee Brown alive. Defense stopper Ronnie Brewer might cause some problems, but there's only one of him against what will seem to him like six or seven interchangeable Warriors guards.

Check out our favorite Warriors site, Golden State of Mind, for all the pregame analysis you could ever hope to read.

The Jazz have home court advantage in this series and their fans seem almost as hungry for playoff success as the Warriors' fans. But look for the Warriors to take game 1, take the home court advantage, and take the Jazz' legs right out from under them with a massive, overpowering effort tonight. We've got the Warriors by 20 points.

So, once again, that's Warriors in five. You heard it hear first, again. Oh yeah, and the Spurs in six.
